00:00In the Grand Theatre of Tusk Cricket, there are spells that linger in memory and others
00:05that sadly fade with time.
00:08One such performance, often overlooked, came in November 1985 at the Sydney Cricket Ground,
00:14where Bob Holland, Australian-lead-blooming leg spinner, produced a masterpiece against
00:19New Zealand.
00:20Bolling a marathon spell of 47 hours, Bob Holland wove his magic to claim 6405, including
00:2719 medans, are true exhibitions of patience, craft and guile.
00:32His victims read like a roll call of New Zealand finest Bruce Edgar, John Reed, Jeremy Conney,
00:38Geoff Crowe, Juan Brown and the great Richard Hadley.
00:42Worth that effort, he laid the foundation for Australia's hard-fought victory by four wickets.
00:57He's 50, so Edgar, a very positive knock by the New Zealand left-hander.
01:10He's gone, yes, well caught by Border at silly points, went out very quickly and Border took
01:20a very sharp catch and Bob Holland strikes it.
01:27That one played away very strongly towards mid-wicket.
01:30Well, that's an example of one of those full tosses being hit away for a change.
01:33Slower delivery, and it's gone onto the stunts.
01:37You can see from the delight of the keeper, Wayne Phillips, that was the slower delivery.
01:44Lieutenant, that's got to be very close.
01:47Yes, it's on the way, and Bob Holland is on a hat-trick.
01:50Well, that is an interesting one.
01:54Well, there's a big peel there, another one, that's another LBW decision given by Johnson.
02:01Holland the bowler again, it wasn't unlike the Brown decision.
02:04So, Bobby Holland really having a field day out there.
02:10Good ball, it's in the air, is it out, it's out, yes it is.
02:13Jeremy Conney doesn't look very happy, but they sound like two noises.
02:17Have taken the score along to nine for 217, five penalty runs added for that ball hitting.
02:23But, Bob Holland was not finished yet.
02:26In the second innings, he returned with renewed fire, sneering another four wickets for 68
02:31runs, completing a memorable 10-wicket haul for 174 runs in the match.
02:36It was the kind of spell that not only wins the matches, but also etches a baller's name
02:41into the folklore of Australian cricket.
02:44What makes this story even more remarkable is Bob Holland's journey.
02:48He made his test debut in 1984 at Brisbane at the age of 38, becoming the oldest Australian
02:55debutant in over half a century.
02:57A late starter by international standards, he had honoured his craft through sheer preservance
03:03in the domestic circuit, where he captured 316 wickets at 31.16 in 95 first-class matches.
03:11His batting modus, at best with an average of 19.67, never threatened records, but it was
03:18with the ball that he brought joy to those who love the art of leg spin.
03:23So, Bob Holland's spell at Sydney remains a forgotten gem.
03:26A reminder that cricket often rewards persistence, resilience and unwavering love for the game.
