GEN Z WOMAN DITCHES SOCIAL MEDIA FOR A FLIP PHONE
WITH VID AND PIX
By Hannah Hodgetts
This social media ‘addict’ decided to give up her phone and trade it in for a flip phone.
Mycelia Amadou, 19, from Nevada City, California, US, documented her journey of giving up social media and navigating life with a flip phone.
The content creator paid $80 for her Nokia 2780 and only had access to phone calls, texts and internet for just under a week.
She said: “Using a flip phone has actually taught me a lot.
“It showed me how much time I was wasting on my phone that I could have been doing so many other better things that make me feel more fulfilled and more happy, more alive.”
Mycelia gave her iPhone to her mom to hide away and documented her detox on her iPad camera.
She prided herself on embracing the challenge and enjoying quality time outdoors and with her friends, away from the screen.
However she did share her struggles in social situations where her friends were on their phones and she had nothing to do - often opting to leave the flip phone at home.
As a Gen Z teenager, she explained how she regularly ‘doom scrolls’ on social media and wanted to break that habit.
Mycelia explored hobbies she never found the time for, such as reading, cooking, makeup tutorials, hair appointments and sleepovers.
She explained that the only reason she was excited for the challenge to be over was due to the fear of missing out online.
She said: “I want to try using a flip phone because my attention span is absolutely cooked.
“It's forcing me to do a lot of the things that I want to do, but I just never get around.
“There were so many moments when I went to grab my phone and it was not there.
“I'm very proud of myself for sticking through with this challenge though.
“After getting my phone back, I immediately kind of went back to social media and scrolled on it a lot.
“I did also notice that I get more headaches now that I have my phone.
“I feel more drowsy, more fatigued.
“I have noticed so far that my attention span is so much longer.
“Now that I have it back, I have been consciously trying to spend less time on it and it has been working. So I think my flip phone challenge was a success.”

00:00I just did something kind of crazy.
00:01I bought a flip phone.
00:22I got the Nokia 2780 Flip.
00:24I've never had a flip phone in my life.
00:26I looked at a lot of reviews
00:27and this one was the only one
00:28that was actually close to me.
00:29And I'm impatient so I wanted to pick it up this day.
00:31Today.
00:32Oh, as of tomorrow, I will be phone-less
00:34and like, I'm gonna miss it.
00:36I'm gonna, I love this thing.
00:37Like, so beautiful.
00:38Good morning, everyone.
00:40It is officially day one with no phone.
00:41I'm gonna go give my phone to my mom
00:43and then get ready and stuff.
00:44Mom, can I hand this to you and take a clip of it?
00:47Dude, you're pretty.
00:48No, this is just, it's normal life.
00:50It doesn't have to be, take good care of it.
00:52Can I get into it?
00:54No, please.
00:54Imagine this hasn't been hard so far.
00:55Like, not having a phone has not affected me at all yet,
00:58but I've also been busy in doing activities.
01:00Try to point that out.
01:01I was really craving my phone last night though.
01:03Like, really bad.
01:04Like, I really wanted it.
01:05So I don't know how these next few days are gonna go
01:07because it-
01:08So I wanted to talk about the flip phone.
01:09It's actually, it's been kind of nice
01:11because I am kind of forced to focus on other things
01:14and like, really enjoy the moments that I'm in
01:16instead of just going on my phone.
01:18But I'm also getting a lot of FOMO.
01:19Like, the people around me are always on their phones.
01:22So when I don't have one, it's like,
01:23what do I do now?
01:24Like, I feel a little left.
01:29Morning, everyone.
01:29It's officially day three of using only a flip phone.
01:32So far in this journey, I have been pretty busy.
01:34Like, I've been with my friends
01:35and today, I don't have anything to do.
01:37And this is what I've been afraid of.
01:39And yesterday wasn't that bad.
01:40Like, without a phone
01:41because my friends have phones.
01:42Like, I didn't need it at all.
01:44And I really don't know what to do now.
01:45This is the hardest it's been to not have a phone right now.
01:48I'm literally about to look up things to do
01:50instead of be on your phone on YouTube
01:52because I don't know what to do.
01:53I somehow forgot that reading exists.
01:55I've been reading this book.
01:56I could live here forever.
01:57I can't tell if I like it or not,
01:58but hopefully I can get into it
01:59so I can, like, spend a good chunk of time doing it.
02:10Morning.
02:11It is officially day four.
02:12Getting so close to being done.
02:14Day five of my flip phone challenge.
02:16The final day.
02:17We got some things to do today.
02:18So let's get our day started.
02:19Breakfast.
02:19And now I'm gonna go home
02:20because we both have a hair appointment at 12.
02:23And since I don't have a phone,
02:25I have to, like, get a book.
02:26And I'm gonna get ready
02:26so I can get, like, the full effect of my hair.
02:29But, yeah, no phone in a hair salon.
02:31Oh my god.
02:32But I did notice when I was in the hair salon
02:34that my attention span has gone up a surprising amount.
02:38Like, I was sitting there watching her blow dry my hair
02:39the entire time.
02:41I even brought a book and I didn't even read it.
02:42While she was, like, mixing my hair color up,
02:44I was just staring at the ceiling
02:45before I got my hair washed.
02:47And I was just staring at it.
02:48Like, and I didn't care.
02:49I didn't feel the need to do anything else.
02:50So I thought that was actually really cool.
02:52It is 11.52.
02:53I wasn't gonna go on my phone
02:55if I fell asleep before it was this late.
02:57But I stayed up and it's this late.
02:59And 12 is officially five days.
03:00And I have my phone.
03:02I haven't opened it.
03:02I haven't used it.
03:03It's 12 o'clock.
03:04I'm officially gonna turn it off airplane mode.
03:06My phone is back.
03:07It's been about four days since I got my phone back.
03:09And I wanted to take the end of this video
03:10to reflect on how I feel now that I have my phone back
03:13and answer some Q&A questions that you guys had.
03:15After getting my phone back,
03:16I immediately kind of went back to social media
03:19and scrolled on it a lot, but not as much.
03:21I did also notice that I get more like headaches
03:24now that I have my phone.
03:25Not real headaches, but I feel more drowsy, more fatigued.
03:28Maybe our parents were right and it is the damn phones.
03:31But it was really hard only using a flip phone.
03:33I didn't struggle like crazy,
03:35but there were a lot of moments where I was like,
03:37oh my God, I want my phone back so badly.
03:39And that might just be the phone addicted teenager,
03:42Gen Z and me, but I just wanted it back.
03:44But now that I have it back,
03:45I have been consciously trying to spend less time on it
03:48and it has been working.
03:49So I think my flip phone challenge was a success.
