00:00Where in Europe do intersex people face the most problems?
00:09Intersex is an umbrella term for people with biological characteristics that do not fit typical male or female patterns or have traits of both.
00:18The latest report from the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights found that around two in five intersex people in Europe were forced to undergo convergent practices to change their sexual orientation or gender identity, compared with one in four among those in all LGBTIQ communities.
00:36In Sweden, Germany and Poland, more than half of intersex respondents underwent convergent practices.
00:42This figure was lowest in Belgium and Romania.
00:47Verbal humiliation tops the list of abuse, followed by family pressure and physical violence.
00:53The report highlights a major issue for intersex people, namely genital mutilation, also referred to as sex-normalizing surgeries.
01:01More than half of respondents and their parents were not fully informed before undergoing these medical procedures.
01:07A quarter of respondents underwent such treatments between the ages of 18 and 24.
01:1310% experienced genital mutilation at birth or under one year old.
01:19The highest reported rates of such treatments are in the Netherlands, France and Germany, while the lowest rates are in Romania, Czechia and Italy.
01:28Finally, the highest malуют back in the Netherlands.
