00:00The EU has agreed on new stricter rules against child predators.
00:04What's going to change for victims?
00:10There's a new agreement to remove many barriers,
00:13preventing child abuse survivors from seeking justice.
00:16A new directive will cover more offences,
00:19such as paying to access live streams of child abuse,
00:22and designing AI systems to produce child abuse material,
00:25as well as set higher penalties and ensure more effective prosecution.
00:29This, in particular, will be possible by raising limitation periods.
00:33As things stand, each country has its own,
00:36which creates a geographical lottery for victims
00:39who have longer or shorter time limits for the offence to be investigated and prosecuted,
00:44depending on where they were assaulted.
00:46Under the new directive, the limitation period will be raised to a minimum of 32 years
00:51after reaching the age of majority for the most severe crimes in every country.
00:56But child protection is also about prevention.
01:00According to a report by Out of the Shadows,
01:02the UK has the best measures against child abuse in Europe,
01:06covering education, helplines, safeguarding and caregivers.
01:10Germany does better on the healing front,
01:12first in Europe for timely recovery services and legal aid pathways,
01:17followed by Italy and France.
01:18And regarding the justice system's overall response capacity,
