00:00Now we'll just do one.
00:02Awww.
00:04Take your hand.
00:06You're back on me.
00:12So can I call you madam, what's your name?
00:14Jo. And Jo, who have we got here with you?
00:16This is Alfie, or Alfred when he's naughty.
00:19And that's Vinnie.
00:21Cool, and you're called Donkey Ears?
00:24Yep, stands for Donkey Education and Relaxation in Staffordshire.
00:28Cool, so what kind of places do you go to other than care homes then?
00:32Well, we're a community interest company.
00:34So we work with people with special needs and disabilities
00:38or long-term health conditions.
00:40So people with dementia, autism, people with anxiety and mental health issues.
00:45Just anybody who can benefit from improved wellbeing through the donkey.
00:49And just as you're coming out, you've been inside earlier, haven't you?
00:53We have, we've been visiting the residence. Alfie's been up in the lift to visit people who are bedridden.
00:57And can't make it downstairs.
00:59Right, and how's that gone?
01:01Brilliant, he's cuddled to death now.
01:03Yeah, yeah.
01:05And what happens, I mean, I'm, you know, I'm thinking, what, if they need a toilet?
01:11They're nappies.
01:12Ah, right, okay.
01:15Handy poof bags.
01:16Yeah, that's a godsend, isn't it?
01:18That's a sausage.
01:19Do you make them in a size that'll suit small children?
01:22Because there could be a market here.
01:24Yeah, yeah.
01:25And who have we got here, ladies?
01:27This is one of your residents.
01:28This is June.
01:29Hello June, you okay?
01:30Hi.
01:31Are you saying hello to our little friends, are you?
01:33Our little furry friends.
01:35Have you enjoyed seeing them?
01:37Yes, yes, yes.
01:38Yeah.
01:39Cool.
01:40And do you want to give him a little fuss then?
01:43Go on, give him a little tickle.
01:44I've just had a fuss.
01:46Look at that.
01:49Lovely.
01:50And who's, so shall we, what's your name, madam?
01:53Oh, I'm Claire.
01:54So Claire, you're from Lakeview.
01:56I am.
01:57So what's been the reaction of the residents then?
01:59Oh, there's been some tears.
02:01Yeah.
02:02Lots of smiles.
02:03Yeah.
02:04They've all really loved it.
02:05Yeah.
02:06And it really, from my understanding, sometimes you'll have residents that perhaps don't say
02:10a lot, but this kind of can bring them out the shell, can't it?
02:13Yeah.
02:14There can be a special reaction that happens, can't there?
02:16And it's all in the facial expressions and their eyes light up, you know.
02:20Yeah, yeah.
02:21It's been really magical.
02:22And great.
02:23And lovely for the staff, isn't it?
02:24Oh, yeah.
02:25Let's face it.
02:26Yeah, yeah.
02:27I think there's something about donkeys that triggers childhood memories, isn't it?
02:30Yeah.
02:31Yeah.
02:32And lots of the...
02:33Of course, yeah.
02:34We've got those early memories but haven't got the later memories.
02:37Yeah, yeah, of course, yeah.
02:39Yeah, because they would have all had a donkey ride on, weren't they, back in the day.
02:42And it's just a nice sensory experience.
02:44Yeah, fantastic.
02:45Oh, there he is.
02:46He's smiling.
02:47He's smiling.
02:48I'm sorry, Rose.
02:49He's been doing that all.
02:50No, you can't raise the camera.
02:52It's not...
02:54They're not phased at all, are they?
02:56Without coming inside.
02:57No.
02:58They're great, isn't they?
02:59And we were having a little chat off camera.
03:00You were saying they're so good with people because they're ex-beach donkeys.
03:04Yeah, Alfie was on Blackpool Beach.
03:06Yeah.
03:07And Vinnie was on Grey Yarmouth Beach.
03:08No way.
03:09So, how old are they then?
03:11Do we know?
03:12Vinnie's...
03:13I think he's 54 now and Alfie's 18.
03:15Yeah.
03:16Yeah.
03:17They've seen it all in them.
03:18Yeah, yeah.
03:19I've actually been a wise old one.
03:21Yeah.
03:22Yeah.
03:23In here?

03:36I think you're very well prepared.
03:38Who's this, Ray?
03:39Who we got here?
03:40We've got a visitor for you.
03:42Hello.
03:43Are you alright if we bring him in?
03:45Who's this?
03:46Hello.
03:47I bet you weren't expecting a donkey in your bedroom today, were you?
03:52How about that, Ray?

04:10He's come all the way to give you a cuddle.
04:12How about that, Ray?
04:13Did you ever have a ride at Blackpool on a donkey?
