00:00Our next guest is a talented actor.
00:02You know best from his work on Sons of Anarchy
00:04and movies like The Gentleman and Pacific Rim.
00:06You can see him next in Monster, The Ed Gein Story.
00:09All eight episodes are available on Netflix October 3rd.
00:12Let's take a look.
00:16Hello?
00:18I didn't want you to come in here.
00:23Sorry about it.
00:26We are deer hunting and we lost our berries.
00:29I was wondering if you couldn't tell us the best way back into town.
00:32What?
00:45You shouldn't be watching this.
00:49Please welcome to the show, Charlie Adam!
00:59Charlie, I'm so happy you're here.
01:04Thank you, thank you, thank you.
01:05Congratulations.
01:06I want to talk about the show, but you were also at the Emmys.
01:08You presented a couple of weeks ago.
01:09How was your Emmys experience?
01:10You know, I'm in a strange phase of life right now.
01:13I feel like my life's turned into an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm.
01:17Okay.
01:18That's usually not great to experience in real life.
01:20It could have been better.
01:21It could have been better.
01:22It started out great, as catastrophes tend to.
01:25I was there invited to present Best Lead Actress in Anthology or Limited Series.
01:31And, you know, you go into the room and it's just like this giant room filled with the most beautiful and talented people in Hollywood.
01:43It's fantastic.
01:44It's a great room to be in.
01:45And so I was just there enjoying it, you know, sort of soaking it all in.
01:48I got a tap on the shoulder and I turned around and it was Gary Oldman, who is obviously one of the greatest of all time.
01:55And he said, listen, I'm sorry to disturb you, mate.
01:57I just, my wife and I have been discussing it and we think you should be the next James Bond.
02:03I mean, high praise.
02:04Which is like...
02:05High praise.
02:06Yeah, I'm not ashamed to say one of the...
02:07Yeah, it's really good.
02:08...one of the great moments of my life.
02:11And so...
02:12So you undersold it.
02:13This night's starting great.
02:14It started great.
02:15Yeah.
02:16And then it came time for me to give my award out and they come and get you.
02:21You're sitting there, you know, you know how it works.
02:23And so I'm walking through this giant room filled with all of the most beautiful and successful people in Hollywood and just start to get the fear.
02:30Start to realize, oh, right now I'm going to have to go and speak in front of this room.
02:34Right.
02:35So I just start sweating and I get a tap on the shoulder.
02:38And I turn around and it's Parker Posey.
02:40Again, good taps.
02:42I know who Parker Posey is.
02:44Yeah, of course, everybody does.
02:45Right, you'd think.
02:46Yeah.
02:47But in my blacked out state of anxiety, I thought she was Julia Louise Dreyfus.
02:54Okay, gotcha.
02:56I mean, I'd literally just finished watching White Lotus.
02:59Yeah.
03:00So there's no real forgiving this.
03:01Yeah.
03:02And they don't look similar at all.
03:03No.
03:04And yet, that was the mistake I made.
03:06And to make matters worse, I just worked with Julia Louise Dreyfus' son, Charlie Hall.
03:11So I said super confidently to Parker Posey, great to meet you.
03:16I just worked with your son.
03:20To which she said, oh, honey, I don't have a son.
03:22Great.
03:23And that was the moment that I caught up with reality.
03:25Yeah, you started to put the pieces together now.
03:27Yeah, I put the pieces together.
03:28Classic James Bond figuring out the situation.
03:30Right.
03:31Exactly.
03:35So there's this horrible, horrible silence.
03:38And Parker being the beautiful, generous person she is, she took my hand and said,
03:42every moment, every moment, every moment is a new moment.
03:49Just so kind, let me off the hook.
03:51To which I said, if you had a son, he would be lovely.
04:00And she just looked at me like, wow, you're an imbecile.
04:04Ten seconds after this, like, miraculously terrible interaction, I go out onto stage and just stutter,
04:11can't remember my lines, disaster.
04:13And I, uh, Kristen Milioti wins, which is awesome.
04:17Yeah, she is.
04:18She's fantastic.
04:19She was great.
04:20Big fan of hers here.
04:22I voted for her.
04:24Yeah.
04:25Like, I wanted her to win this award.
04:26I was so stoked.
04:27But what I noticed was that some people opt not to hold the award while they're giving their speech.
04:33Right.
04:34They're half feet.
04:35It's like 25 pounds or something.
04:36Yeah.
04:37So she gets up and I say, congratulations.
04:39And, um, I say, would you like this?
04:42Or do you want me to hold on to it?
04:45And this is the moment.
04:46You see, because she's smiling here.
04:48But what she's thinking is, wow, this guy's an imbecile.
04:52I'm gonna see it.
04:53So.
04:54So then I get back to my chair and Gary's just disappointed.
04:58Like, wow, you really blew it.
05:01And I sit down and my wife just goes like, it wasn't supposed to be funny.
05:08So, yeah.
05:09Look, it happens.
05:10I'm assuming that you have been, have you been mistaken for other actors in your career, though?
05:14Last night.
05:15Okay.
05:16How do you hear this?
05:17So I got in the taxi about nine o'clock.
05:18Lovely guy driving the taxi from Punjab.
05:21I spent a bit of time in that neck of the woods.
05:23We're chatting, having a nice time.
05:24And he starts to think maybe he recognizes me, but he's not quite sure how.
05:27So he asked my name and I tell him my name.
05:30And then he decides to Google it.
05:32But, like, through video search.
05:34And his phone is connected with Bluetooth to the speakers of the taxi.
05:39And the taxi and the speakers are cranked to full blast.
05:43Maximum decibel.
05:44And the video he chooses to watch is titled, What Happened to Charlie Harmon?
05:51I swear to God.
05:54And it's this, like, harrowing tragic tale of all of my biggest failures, both personally and professionally.
06:02And he doesn't turn it off.
06:03He just sort of keeps giving me, like, sympathetic looks in the rear view.
06:07And thankfully, it was a short ride.
06:09So I get out.
06:10And the last thing I hear as he drives off into the night, echoing through the streets of New York,
06:14is then came the spectacular box office failure of King Arthur.
06:19And so I get out and I'm alone on the streets, just, like, forlorn and feeling pretty bad about myself.
06:26And this guy goes, holy moly, it's really you.
06:30I went, oh, okay, here we go.
06:32He said, I love you.
06:33I just think you're so talented.
06:35I'm like, this is really what I needed.
06:37You've no idea.
06:38So he said, can we take a picture?
06:39I said, of course, let's take a picture.
06:41We take a picture.
06:42I give him a little hug.
06:43And he turns around as he's walking away and says, I just loved you.
06:48I just loved you in Robin Hood.
06:52I'm not in Robin Hood.
06:54I guess he thought I was tearing at you.
06:57So things happen.
06:59I just hope they add this to the what happened to Charlie Hunnam.
07:02Because this is just like a coda.
07:05Yeah, exactly.
07:06You know what I mean?
07:08This is the sequel.
07:10By the way, congratulations.
07:11This is fantastic.
07:12Ed Gein, you completely had to transform your body for this role.
07:15I did.
07:16I did.
07:17I mean, this is not somebody.
07:18You're not an Ed Gein type.
07:19Thank God.
07:20Did you have to put yourself through the ringer to get in a place to play?
07:24Obviously, a very dark character as well.
07:25I put on some pounds.
07:27And so I had to lose about 30 pounds or so.
07:31Yeah.
07:32No, it was a vibe.
07:33Yeah.
07:34It was a vibe.
07:35I had a haircut, which you just saw, which is hard to navigate the world with.
07:39I got into the elevator one night.
07:42I was staying at the Four Seasons in Chicago.
07:45And lovely.
07:47Really.
07:48Yeah.
07:49Very posh hotel.
07:50Posh hotel.
07:51And we work late.
07:53It's about 11 o'clock at night.
07:54And these two really elegant, well-to-do people are in the elevator.
07:58And so I think, like, they look really lovely.
08:02Let me just, like, strike up a little conversation.
08:04Just, you know, easygoing, little, you know, regular chat.
08:07I said, hey, how's your night going?
08:09And they look at me.
08:10And then they sort of looked at each other.
08:12And then they looked at the ground and just didn't say anything.
08:15And I was like, wow, rich people really suck.
08:18Yeah.
08:19That's so rude.
08:21And then I got up to my room.
08:23And we may have even just been shooting that scene that we just watched.
08:26I had, like, blood all over my face.
08:29And all over my hands.
08:31And a serial killer haircut.
08:32Yeah.
08:33So they actually acted appropriately looking back.
08:35Yeah.
08:36They thought I was gonna murder them.
08:37That's like when you check in, they're like,
08:39if you see a serial killer in the elevator, just look down.
08:41Right.
08:42Don't engage.
08:43Right.
08:44Hey, man, congrats on the show.
08:46And it's so wonderful to have you here for the first time.
08:48I've been a fan forever.
08:49You guys, Charlie Hunnam.
08:51Thank you, man.
08:52All eight episodes of Monster The Egg Game Story premiere on Netflix this Friday, October
08:563rd.
08:57Stick around.
08:58Be right back with more Late Night.
