04:17Và Liz and Dave are preparing for a busy few weeks.
04:21The future of Lac de Maison depends on the income they generate from their holiday lets.
04:26But the old buildings can spring nasty surprises.
04:29And since repairs never come cheap, it's important to be full all year round.
04:34So over Christmas we've got guests in.
04:36So we've got Christmas and we've got a two-day break and then the next lot arrive.
04:43So within that two-day break over Christmas, we've got to clean all the jeets
04:47and get them all back up and ready for the next lot of guests.
04:50At the same time, it's good money. We can't turn it down.
04:53And it makes it a lot more bearable when you're drinking glue vine as you're cleaning.
04:57So, you know, and eating mince pies.
04:59So, you know, it could be worse.
05:02With so many guests due over the holiday season,
05:05Liz and Dave are going full festive with their Christmas decorations.
05:09At least as far as their budget will allow.
05:12When I first came with Inherited the G's, I had all these grand plans of doing
05:16and each one had its own themed Christmas whole kind of grotto-y thing.
05:22And then I realised we've got no money.
05:24So I was like, yeah, over time, we'll get there.
05:30Since money has been tight this year,
05:32they're hoping they won't need to invest in any new decorations.
05:36Outside, though, Dave might have a problem.
05:38That one's on. That one's not.
05:47Maybe I should have checked before I bothered hooking them all up like that.
05:51Perhaps there's just a bit of wire come loose where it connects up.
05:56We'll see.
05:57Dave tries his best by wiggling the wires and double-checking the bulbs,
06:03but he isn't getting very far.
06:06They're lit all the way to the left.
06:08If you look to the right, they're not lit.
06:10And it could be anywhere.
06:12It could be anywhere, can it?
06:13It's the new lights it is.
06:15Oh, well.
06:17At least we're not going to get to turn it up tomorrow or something,
06:19so that's all right.
06:20Despite the odd hiccup outside...
06:24Right.
06:26..inside the three jeeks, there's been much more progress.
06:29And with daughter Charlotte in charge,
06:31it doesn't take long before the rooms are full of sparkle.
06:35In fact, by the end of the day...
06:37Oh, yeah.
06:38..it's a festive mission accomplished
06:40because Dave's pulled off his own Christmas miracle.
06:44Pleased with those.
06:45..the lights outside are now working.
06:48Charlotte, what do you think?
06:49Wow! You did a great job, Daddy!
06:52All in all, it means Liz and Dave
06:54can look forward to the perfect Joyeux Noël.
06:57We've managed to get all three jeeks mostly done.
07:00The trees are done, which is always the most time-consuming.
07:02So it's really nice. I'm happy. I'm excited about Christmas now.
07:05We've got to put our own tree up.
07:06We've got to put our own tree up, yeah, and then we're ready.
07:07That's a big deal.
07:08And then we're Christmas ready.
07:10All right.
07:13A month later, and Christmas cheer seems a distant memory
07:16because the new year has brought an unsettling sense of déjà vu.
07:21It's 12 months since a storm claimed part of the gable end
07:24of their farmhouse ruin,
07:25Ferdinand Clovis-Pound's former home.
07:28Now another storm has struck,
07:29and this time it's taken no prisoners.
07:32We woke up after this big storm
07:35and discovered that this wall behind us
07:39has completely collapsed.
07:42We pushed these walls down a bit last year,
07:45and it's probably our own fault
07:47because it wasn't capped at the top there,
07:49so the waters got in and kind of pushed it all out,
07:52so no-one to blame but ourselves for this one,
07:56I'm afraid to say.
07:58Liz and Dave originally had big plans for the farmhouse,
08:01but over the last four years,
08:03nature has worn it down piece by piece.
08:07The future of this 18th-century building
08:09and the stories it carries now hang by a thread.
08:15We'll get a builder to come and assess what we need to do to it.
08:19It'd be really sad if this is the case,
08:21but it might have to be all pushed down.
08:24Yeah, it's a shame.
08:24Making a living off the land is never easy,
08:32but for the farmers who work the steep mountainsides of the Douro Valley,
08:36it's literally an uphill struggle every day.
08:39They're famous for growing the grapes that produce port wine here,
08:43and the farmers traditionally live in small communities called kintas.
08:47But not every kintas has survived the march of time.
08:51Until the end of the last century,
08:53kintas das Compras was home to three families.
08:56But when John and Tara moved here from Bristol,
08:58it had long been abandoned and left to the elements.
09:03Before we bought it, it was completely overgrown,
09:06and we've done a lot of work over the last three years.
09:09The couple have moved here in order to give their boys the chance
09:12to grow up in an unspoilt rural environment.
09:15And they're generating an income
09:17by documenting their journey on social media.
09:20As a couple, without kids,
09:22living in an apartment in the centre of Bristol was great fun.
09:26We couldn't do that with kids.
09:27We wanted them to grow up in the wilds.
09:29And the challenges that this land brings to us
09:32that just gives us so much happiness
09:34that I wouldn't swap it.
09:42It's October,
09:44and a demolition team is on site,
09:46bringing down a house
09:47that had so many structural problems
09:49it couldn't be saved.
09:51Eventually, a brand new home will be built in its place,
09:54but there's plenty more to do first.
09:57Well, quick film, film, film, film.
10:03I was just standing there,
10:04but 30 seconds ago.
10:07Over the next couple of hours,
10:09the crew make great progress.
10:11It looks so small now.
10:15Like, it really looks...
10:17I don't know, I feel like now
10:18I really appreciate just how little space we had.
10:23But there's a problem with an oak tree
10:24that's in the way of the excavator.
10:27That's going to take him a long time.
10:30And it's the kind of dilemma
10:31all our village saviors face
10:33at some time or another,
10:35balancing the desire to preserve the past
10:37with the need to do what's practical.
10:41We know that eventually we're going to have to chop down
10:43some trees around here
10:44because they're just too close to the building.
10:46And they asked,
10:47can we chop down the tree?
10:49And I said, you know,
10:49can we just take a moment on that one?
10:52So for now, we're just chopping a branch off.
10:55I tell you what would be really fun
10:56is to save it and make a banister
10:58of a new house out of it, wouldn't it?
10:59Love that idea.
11:01Love it.
11:03Tara's also keeping a close eye
11:05on another of her favourite trees.
11:07It's an orange tree
11:09that the couple both have a huge attachment to.
11:12I was, like, watching it
11:13and I was saying,
11:14oh, that orange tree's getting all really unscathed.
11:17I think it's going to be OK.
11:17And as I said that,
11:19a huge chunk of cement just fell right on its head.
11:22That's a shame.
11:23Yeah, no, but I think it's OK.
11:24I didn't see any damage on it.
11:26It must have just gone,
11:27oh, what was that?
11:27Right.
11:28If we can get that orange tree,
11:29it'll be a real bonus.
11:31Yeah, it will be a result, won't it?
11:32The tree will definitely have a future in the Kinter.
11:35They're just not quite sure where.
11:37So the plan is,
11:38once the house is gone,
11:39the digger will be able to come round here,
11:41lift it and go and replant it somewhere else.
11:47A few hours later,
11:48the entire building is finally down
11:50and the demolition team can take a well-earned breather.
11:54House has gone totally.
11:56I can see a staircase and that's it.
11:59This little house here
12:00feels pretty lonely on its own though now, doesn't it?
12:07The house doesn't need to feel too lonely for too long
12:10because the crew is soon back
12:12to start clearing away the rubble.
12:14But with the digger still struggling to get up the hill...
12:17No way!
12:20...and a dump truck on the way,
12:23their first job is to shore up the steep slope
12:25that leads to the courtyard.
12:29So he's just making this road a little bit less steep.
12:35But I'm really nervous that he breaks the tree roots.
12:38By the time the dump truck arrives...
12:43What is it?
12:43Truck!
12:45Oi!
12:46Dump truck!
12:47The dump truck!
12:49The slope is flatter,
12:51but will it be flat enough?
12:57The truck really isn't getting enough traction in the mud,
13:00so a helping hand from the excavator
13:02is just about the only solution.
13:04That'll do.
13:11Fill it up.
13:12I hope Mario's brakes are good.
13:15It just looks so precarious.
13:18Oh, man.
13:20Clear up should be done in the next couple of days,
13:23and then the hard work really will start
13:26as the rebuild begins.
13:28It feels a bit messy at the moment, for sure.
13:31But I'm really excited
13:32because now I can clearly see what comes next.
13:35Coming up, at a village in Italy,
13:42a clash in the diary is causing chaos.
13:46Got a wine tasting, which is lovely to have,
13:49however, bad planning.
13:51We shouldn't have had it today.
13:52Just as usual, we are not the best at communicating.
13:55And at Quinta das Compras,
13:58John discovers exactly what his old house was sitting on.
14:01As we're uncovering the foundations here,
14:05we now see how deep it is.
14:09I thought that this house was on more of a rock.
14:12Some of our saviours find their lost villages
14:27hidden in hillsides or buried under wild vegetation.
14:31But there's a hamlet between Rome and Naples
14:33that has been home to one family for centuries.
14:37Now a lawyer from Edinburgh
14:38has returned to the village of his ancestors
14:41with dreams of bringing back the next generation.
14:45For over 500 years,
14:47Chisidio's forefathers lived here in Ichaka,
14:50working the land, growing olives and grapes.
14:53As a result of mass migration,
14:56it slowly withered
14:57until Chisidio returned
14:59determined to restore his ancestral home
15:02and revive the family name.
15:04More than 20 generations of the family have lived here
15:11until circumstances that took the family away.
15:16But here, the quality of life can be such
15:19that it can be a good life.
15:20Inspired by his grandparents,
15:24who migrated to Scotland in the 1900s,
15:26Chisidio has spent nearly 15 years transforming Ichaka
15:30into a winery, a cooking school and events business.
15:34I woke up one morning and said,
15:36I can do this.
15:39Let's do it.
15:39Now, as his daughter Sophia,
15:43her husband and their children
15:44prepare to live here,
15:46it's the bonds of family
15:47that are the best guarantee of its longevity.
15:50And that'll be very exciting
15:52because it will bring real life back to this,
15:54not just vines or fruit trees,
15:56which are fundamental.
15:57It will bring children's laughter.
15:59The future is theirs, not mine.
16:02And hopefully it will be something
16:03they will be proud of.
16:04It's July and two days after Sophia
16:12and her husband Luigi moved to Italy,
16:14their belongings have arrived.
16:16We have so much stuff and it's not just ours.
16:20It's my dad's fault
16:21because he's got a lot of random stuff in that lorry.
16:25A lot of books, a lot of furniture
16:27that nobody uses anymore,
16:28but he insisted that it can.
16:30It's a very full lorry,
16:32so I think it might take a while.
16:33It's about 27 degrees already,
16:35so it's very hot.
16:36So hopefully we get it done quickly enough
16:39before the real heat of the day.
16:43Until their new home is built in Hitchaka,
16:46Sophia's family will be staying
16:47in an apartment in nearby Pijanisco.
16:50So they need to figure out
16:51what will be going with them
16:53and what will be going into storage
16:54at her parents' house.
16:56This just slides forward.
16:58It won't slide forward
16:59because it's locked in with the other legs.
17:00I'll pull it out
17:01and I'll take it out like that.
17:03But even just unloading it all
17:05is proving to be a challenge,
17:07especially since Cisidio
17:09and his son-in-law Luigi
17:10don't quite see things in the same way.
17:14It's going to be a bigger conversation
17:16as to where they all need to go,
17:18which started yesterday.
17:20We all get in an argument about it.
17:23And funnily enough,
17:24there's no resolution to that.
17:25I can't take it out because that's on the way.
17:31Right, well, okay, we'll find out.
17:32This is called
17:33Lots of Men Thinking They Know Best.
17:38Story of my life.
17:42Holding on to precious family memories
17:45is vital to Sophia.
17:46This is a painting of my grandfather,
17:50my nonno's ice cream shop, gelateria.
17:53He was born here
17:54and that's who left Ijaca.
17:56So he was born in this building,
17:58just in a room over there.
17:59And now he's back.
18:02But with temperatures in the high 20s...
18:04Piano, guarda le detti.
18:06Luigi might be wishing Sophia
18:10was travelling a little lighter.
18:13It is quite hot.
18:14We are just taking a breather now.
18:16And fingers crossed we'll be done in,
18:19I'm hoping, this year.
18:22To make matters worse,
18:24their day is about to get even busier.
18:27Got a wine tasting,
18:28which is lovely to have,
18:30however, bad planning.
18:32Shouldn't have had it today.
18:33So I don't know when they're due to arrive.
18:36No idea.
18:39Just as usual.
18:40We are not the best at communicating.
18:43It's definitely not ideal.
18:45But with a party of guests
18:46en route to sample their wines,
18:48Sophia may well be stepping into the family business
18:51a lot sooner than expected.
18:55So I'm sure boxes will end up going
18:57in all random places
18:58because nobody will be here to tell them.
19:01Oh, so well.
19:06Back in Portugal,
19:16the Demotion crew is hard at work
19:18clearing up the rubble from the old house.
19:20OK, going to give him a big wave
19:23when he drives fast.
19:25Warm!
19:27It's destined to be broken down
19:29and used as hardcore
19:30in other building projects.
19:32And there could be another three truckloads
19:35before the site is clear.
19:37John can already get a glimpse
19:38of what lies beneath, though.
19:40And it's a construction technique
19:41that's common in the local kinters.
19:43The digger driver is putting the bucket
19:46underneath the floor
19:48and lifting up the slab.
19:50And the slab is breaking.
19:53But what's interesting
19:54is that underneath the slab
19:57are these big cobble rocks.
20:01So I think before they laid
20:02the cement slab down originally
20:03for this house,
20:05they lay down a whole bunch of cobbles.
20:10I like that.
20:11When the kinta was originally built,
20:15cobbles like these
20:15would have been transported
20:16up the mountain by donkey
20:18from the Doro River.
20:20They created a base
20:21that was strong enough
20:22to support the old houses,
20:24although they might not meet
20:25modern building regulations.
20:27Look at it, though.
20:28It's gone straight back to the dirt.
20:30It's the first time this dirt's seen
20:31the light of day
20:32since the house was built.
20:34As we're uncovering
20:36the foundations here,
20:38we now see how deep it is.
20:41Yeah, very good.
20:45Very good.
20:46I thought that this house
20:48was on more of a rock.
20:50So now I'm thinking,
20:52what happens if we dig down
20:54and I have a driveway
20:56that goes underneath the house
20:58in this corner?
21:00I'm thinking that right now.
21:01That's what I'm thinking.
21:03With much of the rubble now cleared,
21:05the next job needs a very light touch
21:06with some very heavy equipment.
21:09Shall we ask him to get the tree up?
21:10So this is pretty exciting.
21:15It's time to move
21:16John and Tara's beloved orange tree
21:18from the spot that was
21:20until a few hours ago
21:21right outside their kitchen window.
21:24In days gone by,
21:25fruit from the boughs of this tree
21:26would have been a vital source
21:28of vitamin C
21:29for the families that lived in the Kinta
21:31and probably a generator of income too.
21:35John and Tara
21:36aren't so heavily reliant on the tree.
21:39But with so many
21:40of the man-made structures here
21:41crumbling to dust,
21:43this is one link to the past
21:45they're desperate to save.
21:48Wow, look at that root ball, man.
21:51Beautiful.
21:52I don't think we can lift it, can we?
21:55See, see.
21:56Whoa!
22:00I think it's okay.
22:06We're going to go and plant it
22:07in a nice sunny spot
22:08so that we can get
22:09even more oranges next year.
22:12The demolition team do their best
22:14to handle the tree with kid gloves.
22:16There it goes.
22:18And safely maneuver it down the hill.
22:21Yeah, that's a great spot for it, hey?
22:23It just needs a little bedding
22:25delivered by young Crusoe
22:26and his brother Sawyer.
22:28Oh, there we go.
22:30That'll feed it nicely, won't it?
22:32All right, little bit of organic compost going in.
22:36Pop that in the hole.
22:38And by late afternoon...
22:39Good work, little man.
22:40The orange tree is happily replanted
22:43in its new location.
22:45What a lovely place for an orange tree.
22:47Brilliant.
22:48Obrigado.
22:50The last few days have been hectic,
22:53but John and Tara
22:54have achieved everything
22:55they set out to do.
22:56I can't believe how quick that went.
22:58It was amazing, wasn't it?
22:58Just like that, yeah.
22:59Like, I don't know,
23:01your house feels like
23:01such a big permanent feature
23:03until someone comes at it
23:05with a machine
23:06and then it just disappears in a day.
23:08Gone.
23:08It's crazy.
23:09Yeah, yeah.
23:09The couple believe
23:11the best way they can honour
23:12the families who've lived
23:13in the kinder before
23:14is to create a happy,
23:16loving home
23:17in tune with nature
23:18where their children can thrive.
23:21They feel they've been successful so far,
23:23but building a new house
23:25on the footprint of the old
23:26really will be a challenge.
23:28That over there is going to be part of our house.
23:33Yeah.
23:33And this over here
23:34is going to be part of our house.
23:36It's going to be quite big, isn't it?
23:37Yeah, it's massive.
23:38I'm, you know, great.
23:39Yikes.
23:40Yeah.
23:41You're cleaning it, right?
23:44No.
23:45We'll get a robot for that.
23:46Coming up,
23:52things go from bad to worse
23:54at Lac de Maison.
23:56We're worried that actually
23:58if we leave it up,
24:00it's going to start pulling
24:01the whole corner of our house down.
24:02And in Uxaca,
24:05it's a worrying wait
24:06as they deliver
24:07a baby grand piano.
24:09Quite nervous.
24:10But luckily it's
24:11Sophia's piano, not mine.
24:13No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
24:15OK, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
24:27Back in central Italy,
24:29Luigi is still hoping
24:30to unload his family's belongings
24:32from the back of the removal truck.
24:36If you don't laugh,
24:38you'll do something else.
24:40So we will,
24:41I will keep them laughing
24:42until it's done.
24:45Meanwhile, Sophia has been cajoled
24:47into hosting a wine tasting
24:48in the village
24:49for a group of British guests.
24:532019's the same year
24:55as your nostalgia.
24:57And we have found
25:00that note that you were talking about
25:02about a kind of earthy note
25:03in our later vintages of the red.
25:07Sophia has been playing a pivotal role
25:09in the family business
25:10from the UK for a decade,
25:12so she knows what she's talking about.
25:14But she wasn't quite expecting
25:16to be in the hot seat today.
25:18A good many visitors to the winery
25:29have Italian heritage
25:30and the history of Ichaka
25:32strikes a deep chord.
25:34My family actually come from the next mountain.
25:38My grandparents left there
25:40in the early 20s.
25:41I'm so proud that her generation
25:43is coming back to this area
25:44because it's really important
25:47that you go back to your roots
25:48and your children know
25:50where you've come from.
25:52Just like her dad,
25:53and I'm so proud of you.
25:54In the future Sidio,
25:55Sophia grew up on colourful stories
25:56of her ancestral village.
25:59But now, as it becomes her own home,
26:01the importance of the legacy
26:03is really sinking in.
26:05We're so fortunate
26:06to be able to touch,
26:08touch these roots,
26:10to know exactly where I'm from.
26:12People that come to visit here
26:13have a real interest
26:16and need to know more
26:18about their family history.
26:19and we are in the lucky position
26:22that we actually have curated
26:24a lot of it,
26:25thanks to dad.
26:26So I am trying my very best
26:28to start to open my ears,
26:31take it in,
26:32and keep it there
26:33so that I can start
26:34to pass it on as well.
26:38Outside at the removal truck,
26:40the good news is that
26:41Luigi is almost done.
26:44The bad news is that
26:45the last thing to come off
26:46is not only the heaviest,
26:47it's also the most valuable.
26:50It's a baby grand piano.
26:52We need to have
26:53as many bodies as possible,
26:54holding it upright.
26:56Quite nervous.
26:58But luckily it's Sophia's piano,
26:59not mine.
27:01The piano weighs about
27:03half a metric tonne,
27:04or roughly 80 stone,
27:06so manoeuvring it
27:07is no small feat.
27:10OK, slowly, slowly.
27:13First, they have to move it
27:14with a pallet trolley
27:15onto the tailgate lift,
27:17making sure it doesn't
27:18roll off the end.
27:20You're OK on this side,
27:21you've got plenty of room
27:22on this side.
27:24OK, it's passed,
27:25it's passed, it's passed.
27:26Next, six pairs of hands
27:28need to keep it
27:28from toppling over
27:29as they descend
27:30to ground level.
27:31So far, so good.
27:37Bravo.
27:38But then the trolley
27:40runs off on its own,
27:41and the piano's
27:42in danger of tipping
27:43as the team try to get
27:44the trolley back underneath
27:46and pump its hydraulics.
27:48Roman, this is too much.
27:51Do you need another body?
27:53I could do as many bodies
27:54as possible.
27:54Guys, men,
27:55can I have the men?
27:56Please, quickly, thank you.
27:58OK, watch, it doesn't catch.
28:05Luckily, the trolley
28:07takes the weight again
28:08just in time.
28:12OK, OK, OK, well done.
28:14Well done.
28:14I just suddenly saw...
28:18Oh, my God,
28:18your whole furniture
28:19collapsing.
28:20It's a piano.
28:21But now they have
28:22to get the piano inside.
28:24That was intense.
28:26That was intense.
28:27OK.
28:30After a few more
28:31heart-stopping moments...
28:33Oh, I spent...
28:34No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
28:35OK, no, no, va bene, va bene.
28:36The move is finally complete.
28:41Cesidio has always dreamed
28:43of bringing his family back
28:44to the home of his ancestors.
28:46And now, at last,
28:48it's come true.
28:49This has been a saga,
28:51but we've done it.
28:51It's been five years thinking,
28:53a year planning.
28:54Our whole world,
28:55our whole life and belongings
28:57are now in Ichaka.
29:00Now on to the work.
29:03We start chapter one
29:05of the Tanas and the Ichakas
29:08doing something quite marvellous
29:09down here in Lazio.
29:10And already we're making
29:11great progress.
29:12Let's see where we are
29:13next year.
29:25At Lac de Maison,
29:27Liz and Dave are dealing
29:28with the aftermath
29:29of the storm
29:29that rips through
29:30the old home
29:31of their French war hero,
29:32Ferdinand Clovis-Pin.
29:34This morning,
29:35they've called in
29:36their neighbours
29:36to help start
29:37clearing the debris.
29:38So we've got our friends,
29:41Nick and Kirsty,
29:42giving us a hand.
29:43They're going to fill
29:44their trailer
29:44full of some of the rocks
29:47just to take,
29:48because they're doing
29:48a little project
29:49at their place.
29:50So our payment
29:50for this is
29:52we're giving them
29:53a load of rocks.
29:53We've also got
29:54some nice whiskey
29:55to add into our hot chocolate
29:56when we get a bit cold,
29:57so it's not all that bad.
29:59I think realistically
30:00this is probably
30:01going to take us
30:01about a week.
30:02We've drastically
30:03underestimated,
30:04but we always do.
30:05It's what we do, isn't it?
30:06Yeah.
30:07This is our special MO.
30:09Underestimate.
30:10It's what we do.
30:13Liz and Dave
30:14are still hoping
30:14to save some part
30:16of the building
30:16that once belonged
30:17to the village's
30:18most famous son.
30:21It would have been
30:22so nice to have
30:23done some level
30:25of restoration to it
30:26and preserve it
30:27because of, you know,
30:30a war hero living here.
30:32But we're talking about
30:34maybe kind of making
30:35a blue plaque
30:36and putting it on the side
30:38just so that
30:38when visitors come
30:39they can find out
30:40that actually
30:42where they're staying
30:43somewhere that's kind of
30:44got some historical interest.
30:47I think it will be
30:49a nice thing to do.
30:51In the meantime,
30:51Liz and Dave
30:52are determined
30:52to give every old stone
30:54a new purpose
30:55somewhere in the hamlet.
30:57It's a case of
31:00making lemonade
31:01from lemons, isn't it?
31:02You kind of dump it all here.
31:03It's the same to your rockery.
31:05We'll plant it up a bit
31:06and it should be really nice.
31:07We'll have rockeries galore.
31:10We'll set up a rockery business.
31:12Need a rockery?
31:13We'll come.
31:15But as they take
31:15a closer look
31:16at the storm damage...
31:17So if you lose
31:18that support there...
31:20Nick,
31:21who's a seasoned renovator,
31:23thinks it could be
31:24even worse
31:25than their first impressions
31:26led them to believe.
31:30Nick's opinion is
31:31that we might have to
31:32take the whole lot down,
31:34which is a massive job.
31:36See, there's a big stone lintel
31:38that's actually protruding out.
31:40And also this wall here,
31:41which is leaning inwards,
31:42is actually attached
31:43to our house as well.
31:45We're worried that actually
31:46if we leave it up,
31:48it's going to start pulling
31:50the whole corner
31:50of our house down.
31:53With their own home at risk,
31:54they now face
31:55a painful truth.
31:57The building may have
31:58to be completely demolished
31:59and the loss
32:00won't just be emotional,
32:01it'll be financial too.
32:07More money
32:08that we're going to have to find.
32:10It's not going to be cheap
32:11to get a big digger
32:12for a few days
32:13because we'd have to clear it
32:14and then find somewhere
32:15on the site
32:16to just dump all of this.
32:19And we're going to have to
32:20probably do it sooner
32:20rather than later,
32:21aren't we?
32:24God.
32:27Just one year,
32:28one year without some disaster.
32:30Somehow,
32:31Liz and Dave
32:32always manage to find
32:33a silver lining, though.
32:35On the plus side, though, Dave,
32:36we'd have a massive patio here.
32:38The most expensive patio
32:40in the history of mankind.
32:46But a month later,
32:47there's some good news.
32:49After another inspection,
32:50they've learned
32:51they don't have to demorish
32:52the whole building after all.
32:54As long as they dismantle
32:55the back gable wall
32:56and cap it at half-height,
32:58the ruin will be structurally safe.
33:03We've had to take that down
33:05and level it off,
33:06ready for us
33:07to concrete
33:09and top it with some tiles
33:10so that it doesn't get
33:12any more water damaged.
33:13So that if someone,
33:14after our time,
33:15decides they wanted
33:15to do something,
33:16they could do a single story
33:18or they could build upwards.
33:20But, yeah, for now,
33:23we're just going to kind of
33:24make it safe structurally
33:26and then utilise it
33:27as an outdoor space.
33:28They hope to make the remains
33:32into a walled garden
33:33and preserve one special feature,
33:36Fairton & Clovis Pan's
33:37original stone fireplace.
33:39I'm going to turn this bit
33:40into a little bar.
33:41I'm going to put some shelving
33:42and some backlighting up,
33:44take this out, restore it,
33:45and actually put a fire grate in there.
33:47It does mean their dream
33:49of a full restoration
33:50is now over.
33:52But often saving a village
33:53means knowing which bits
33:55to let go.
33:58Sad, but it's beyond repair
34:00for our budget.
34:00We cannot afford to spend
34:03the amount of money
34:04that you need
34:04to make this into a home again.
34:06but I think it'll be
34:08a really cool space.
34:10It's private,
34:11it's away from the guests
34:12and you've got great views
34:14when you can see them.
34:21Coming up,
34:22at Quinta das Compras,
34:24new steps are going in
34:25but it's a risky business.
34:27We do have an entire
34:28terrace wall there
34:29that was built
34:30about 500 years ago
34:32that may very well collapse.
34:34And in Ixaca,
34:35it's all hands to the pump
34:37as they host an event
34:38for 100 people.
34:39It's the first big event
34:40that I've been here for.
34:41Seeing it as a functioning business,
34:44it's exciting.
34:45We've got an event
34:46for 100 people today.
35:01In the 500-year-old village
35:03of Ixaca,
35:04it's August.
35:05Three weeks have passed
35:06since Sofia and Luigi
35:07arrived in Italy
35:08with their girls.
35:10And no one is more pleased
35:11than Sofia's little brother, Giovanni.
35:13I'm happy she's
35:15able to come over
35:18to look after
35:19her number one priority.
35:25Number one priority.
35:25Number one priority.
35:27Hi, number one priority.
35:28Where's the number two?
35:29Today, Giovanni and the rest of the family
35:34are preparing for one of the biggest events
35:36they've ever held at Ixaca.
35:38And the pressure will be on.
35:40We have a wedding event.
35:43They are here for a wine tasting
35:45for their day after for them,
35:46their guests.
35:47But it's the first big event
35:48that I've been here for.
35:49and seeing it as a functioning,
35:52breathing business.
35:54It's exciting.
35:55We've got an event for 100 people today.
35:58Wine tasting has been a lucrative source of income
36:01for the village over the past few years.
36:03But now that Sofia and Luigi
36:05are on board full-time,
36:07they hope to build on that success.
36:09They'd like to expand
36:10into more grand-scale events.
36:12So as the guests arrive,
36:14it's a good gauge
36:15of how they all work together as a team.
36:18Team Luigi.
36:20Preferably as half of you as possible.
36:24To keep the wine tour running smoothly,
36:26the group is split into two.
36:28Do we have any more for the Luigi team?
36:31With Giacidio leading one half,
36:33Luigi the other.
36:35OK, follow me.
36:36We're going this way.
36:37The stories of Ixaca
36:42have been passed from parents
36:43to their children for 500 years.
36:46And its history runs through Giacidio's veins.
36:49And Caserta's halfway between here and Naples.
36:51And this is the province of Caserta.
36:53Or was before the unification of Israel.
36:57Which makes him a tough act to follow.
37:00It was last inhabited
37:01probably around the 1930s
37:03after the World War.
37:04And then, of course,
37:05World War II came along
37:05where it really was
37:06and it was empty.
37:09But whatever Luigi lacks in experience,
37:12he's making up for with enthusiasm.
37:16So that tells us two things.
37:17One, that people could live,
37:18eat and sleep here
37:19because we have evidence
37:20that animals were kept here,
37:22agriculture was kept here
37:23and viticulture was also on site.
37:25We also know that the land
37:26has never been touched
37:27in over 100 years,
37:28which means it's by day one organic.
37:30That's important
37:31because it's our family philosophy
37:33to be organic and natural.
37:35And we plant one grape,
37:36and the grape is Maturano.
37:38Meanwhile, Giovanni is busy
37:40making sure there are plenty
37:41of local delicacies
37:42for the guests to enjoy
37:43with their wine tasting.
37:46If we don't want to get too drunk,
37:47we've got to eat
37:48and it does as well.
37:50So, teas, salami,
37:53faceta,
37:54a little bit of bray
37:57and we'll see how we do.
38:03Just as the original founders
38:05of this village did for centuries,
38:07each member of the family
38:08has a role in keeping it alive.
38:10Thank you.
38:10Thanks, Giovanni.
38:12Yeah, I got your corn away.
38:13Yeah, you made a very good job.
38:15Very good job.
38:16Thank you.
38:17It might be a little while
38:19before Sophia and Luigi
38:20truly find their feet.
38:21It's the first time
38:22we've done a synchronised tour
38:24where we didn't quite overlap.
38:26Perfect timing.
38:27And I know that I talk
38:28as long as Chisidio.
38:30Can you imagine?
38:32Can you imagine?
38:32But as the tasting begins,
38:35it's clear that Chisidio
38:36has every faith
38:38in the next generation.
38:40I drink with you.
38:41Salute.
38:42Chichin.
38:43Welcome to Chaka.
38:44Buena minuto.
38:45The involvement of Giovanni,
38:47Sophia and Luigi
38:48is first rate.
38:51It takes a lot off me.
38:52We're working together
38:53and it's good
38:54because we're filling in
38:55for each other
38:56and that's really special.
38:58You know, life is about
38:59just enjoying what's right about
39:01and here we've got lots to enjoy.
39:02Back in Portugal,
39:11it's December.
39:13John and Tara's builders
39:14are already hard at work
39:15on the foundations
39:16for the new house.
39:18But today,
39:18the couple are turning
39:19their attention
39:20to another part of the grounds.
39:23We are connecting
39:24a terrace that's up here,
39:26which is our vegetable garden,
39:27with a terrace
39:28that's three metres below it.
39:30They're planning to cut
39:33into the existing terrace wall
39:34and build a set of granite steps
39:36that will improve access
39:38to the lowest part of the Quinta.
39:39Portugal is blessed
39:42with an abundance of granite,
39:43especially in the north,
39:44and Portuguese builders
39:45have relied on it for centuries.
39:48It's hard, durable,
39:50and beautiful.
39:51And the granite
39:52John and Tara have bought
39:53has been sourced
39:54from a local quarry.
39:56Do you know what I am loving?
39:57There's a real sense of urgency
39:58with these guys today.
39:59Constructing a set of steps
40:02sounds straightforward enough,
40:04but it carries risks.
40:05We do have
40:06an entire terrace wall there
40:08that was built
40:08about 500 years ago
40:10that may very well collapse.
40:12And if it does,
40:13the chickens are going with it.
40:15Building these kinds of terraces
40:17would have been no mean feat
40:19for the original craftsman.
40:20The earth had to be moved
40:22using simple hand tools
40:23and then levelled
40:24to create a flat surface
40:25before huge pieces of granite
40:28were piled up
40:29to create the retaining walls.
40:31We had two choices.
40:33We could build it out
40:34from the wall like this
40:35or into the wall.
40:37So we went with into the wall.
40:38Back in the olden days
40:39when they wanted to build
40:40a wall like this,
40:41everybody on the whole side
40:43of the mountain
40:43would all come together
40:44and they'd work on this wall
40:46until it was fully built.
40:50In just an hour of precision work
40:52with his digger,
40:53the driver, Mario,
40:54has taken all he can
40:56from the upper terrace.
40:58Is he coming down here?
41:01It looks like it, doesn't it?
41:03So it's time to tackle
41:04the job from below.
41:06But that is particularly steep.
41:10Blimey.
41:11Taking the direct route
41:13through the new gap.
41:16Come on, Mario.
41:18Bring that digger down.
41:20That's very brave.
41:23Great stuff.
41:25Legend.
41:25While Mario shapes
41:28and shores up the gully
41:29where the granite steps will go,
41:31John offers a helping hand
41:32to the builders
41:33working on the foundations
41:34for the new house.
41:37These guys here
41:38have spent the last week or so
41:40excavating our land.
41:43We've dug out
41:44into the side of the rock
41:45right there.
41:46Before we were using
41:47a big excavator
41:48and now we're just doing it
41:49by hand.
41:49So we've got these
41:51yellow markers here
41:52just on the ground
41:53and we're lowering the ground
41:56bit by bit
41:57just down to that level.
41:59That's the level
42:00that we're going to be
42:00putting the cement down at.
42:04Once the ground is ready...
42:0530.
42:0630?
42:0730.
42:07Okay.
42:09The crew make up cages
42:10of rebar,
42:12reinforcing bars of steel
42:13which will add strength
42:14to the concrete foundations.
42:19It's all the last bits
42:20before we start
42:21chucking cement in
42:22and then building a house.
42:27Back on the terrace,
42:28stonemason Antonio
42:29is now working with Mario
42:31to install the steps.
42:36It's fascinating to watch it.
42:39A slip could crack the granite
42:41or cause somebody
42:42a nasty injury
42:43so Mario is carefully
42:45following Antonio's prompts
42:46to the letter.
42:48Mario is going to use
42:49his digger
42:50just to help lift up
42:52one end of it.
42:55There we go
42:56and now it's going to be level.
43:01Look at that!
43:02This is so cool!
43:06I just love it.
43:08This looks amazing, hey?
43:19It's funny how sometimes
43:20you just need something
43:21to change like this
43:21to make you feel inspired
43:22about space again, you know?
43:25By late afternoon,
43:26all but one of the steps
43:27they're putting in today
43:28are in position.
43:30Look at that.
43:30you build a huge staircase
43:33out of huge pieces of stone
43:36and you're measuring it
43:38to the centimetre.
43:40Which just leaves the last,
43:41number 13.
43:47And after the digger
43:49quickly smooths over the ground,
43:51it's finally time
43:52to down tools
43:53and reflect on another job
43:55well done.
43:56One, two, three.
44:01Okay.
44:02Progress on the building site
44:04and an epic project
44:05nearly done down here.
44:07And it's a beautiful staircase.
44:09I'm super excited to see
44:10what we can create
44:11around this space.
44:13But what a day.
44:14What a day.
44:15That was a really great day,
44:16wasn't it?
44:20Next time at Laque de Maison,
44:22Liz and Dave
44:23might need a bigger digger.
44:25It does look a little bit like
44:26a World War II trench
44:28battlefield at the moment.
44:30The former home
44:31of a medieval knight
44:32reveals its secrets.
44:34The idea was
44:35it was close to the chimney
44:36so that's where they could sleep
44:37to be like really warm.
44:39Thunderstorms wreck
44:39the harvest in Ichaka.
44:41It's raining so much
44:42that not only
44:43the whole picking team
44:44soaked
44:44but also our grapes are soaked.
44:47And at Quinta das Compras
44:49somebody puts their foot in it.
44:51Oh, Obi!
44:53Oh, kidding me.
44:55It's raining so much
44:56it's raining so much
44:57it's raining so much
