00:05potentially adding costs to home buildings and furnishing.
00:09In his latest proclamation, the U.S. will impose a 10% tariff on imported timber and lumber
00:15and a 25% tariff on kitchen cabinets, vanities and upholstered wooden furniture.
00:22The new rates take effect on October 14.
00:25Starting January 1, the duties will rise to 30% for upholstered wooden products
00:30and 50% for kitchen cabinets and vanities from countries that fail to reach an agreement with Washington.
00:36Trump said the measures were necessary to protect America's local industries and national security.
00:42He argued that imports have threatened to shut down wood mills and disrupt supply chains.
00:47Countries likely to be hardest hit include Canada, Mexico and Vietnam.
00:51Canada is the biggest supplier of softwood lumber to the U.S.
00:55However, some nations will see relief through tariff-reducing trade deals.
01:00Wood products from Britain will be kept at 10% and from the European Union and Japan at 15%,
01:06in line with base rates set in their framework agreements.
