00:02An exhibition considered the first comprehensive survey

00:06of photography and its history in Southeast Asia

00:09from the 19th century to the contemporary present

00:13tracing the medium's history as well as its development

00:16into a modern and contemporary art form.

00:20The exhibition features over 300 works

00:24from ambro-types by early European photographers

00:28traveling in the region to war photographs

00:31from the Second Indochina War between the 1950s and the 1970s

00:36to Malaysia's aftermath of the May 13, 1969 Rachel Bryant

00:41to contemporary photo-media based art.

00:46This expansive exhibition was a culmination of research,

00:49of collection and curatorial efforts of an institution

00:53that is also the historian of the largest collection

00:56of Southeast Asian modern art.

01:04But how and where does the Southeast Asia photography collection begin?

01:09To unpack this question, we may have to consider what circumscribes

01:14the national and the global and the regional

01:18and how these concepts interplay with one another within the context of Singapore.

01:24So I'll introduce today's presentation with some of the works in our national collection

01:31but I'll also explain why I have chosen the title

01:35Islands Within an Island.

01:37It is a productive metaphor to consider Singapore within Southeast Asia

01:42and vice versa, which is Southeast Asia within Singapore.

01:47But in this presentation, I'll also consider National Gallery Singapore

01:52a modern art museum within the national collection,

01:55which is an expansive collection of artwork that incorporates

01:59and includes collection remits from the other collecting institutions in Singapore.
