00:00as or one or two twentieth-century photographs

00:03because we had no context within which to place them

00:08we wanted to acquire a carefully selected

00:11survey collection of nineteenth- and twentieth-century

00:14European and American photographs

00:16that we could use as the foundation

00:19on which to build a collection

00:21but none was available at that time

00:25however as we worked on the art of fixing a shadow

00:29We were offered three gifts that seemed to give us a foundation on which we might build or start to collect photographs
