00:31Hello everybody, welcome to Countdown this Friday afternoon and we'll start with a huge thank you to Sally and Peter, the latest fantastic knitters to send a jumper in and if you don't know it I'll tell you the story of the yes a little bit later on the show.
00:45Hello Rachel Riley. Hello Colin Murray. Right, on this day in 1997 the BBC premiered the first episode of I'm Alan Partridge, now one of the greatest comedy characters of all time, had existed six years until this time but I'm Alan Partridge, absolute classic.
01:00Right, let's go over to Dixon Recorder and say, knowing me Colin Murray, knowing you Susie Dent and aha, look who's here. Final appearance of his first week in Countdown, what a delight he has been, the magician Ben Hanlon.
01:12APPLAUSE
01:13Caroline McManus I think arrived here dreaming of just the teapot and one win, here you are one win away from becoming an octo champ. I think yesterday Dean was your biggest challenge.
01:25He was a bit, he was very good, yes. Well you've got to beat Heather Telfer and Heather Telfer is from Lincoln and Heather, I love when I find that somebody's in there's something we haven't talked about it before but it's phenomenally huge which is K-pop, Korean pop music but your band that you love is amazing because they're like gremlins, tell me what happens to your band.
01:45NCT. So there's 20 members and it's supposed to be an expanding group so the concept of the group is that it's endless, the members that they add so currently 20 members and counting.
02:01Well Heather, I can't pretend they understand it but I really appreciate it and good luck to you today, it's Heather versus Caroline.

03:31But we just check anyway. Seven points each to Dictionary Corner.
03:35Ben, how did you do?
03:36Yeah, another seven. Motley-er.
03:38Motley-er. A Motley-er crew.
03:39Motley-er crew, exactly, yeah. Buried in colour.
03:42That's a long time before K-pop, Heather.

05:04Weariest.
05:05Weariest.
05:06Very nice.
05:07Wonderful letters.
05:08Did you manage to push it to a maximum?
05:09Couldn't get a nine, but another eight.
05:10Fantastic word.
05:11Wiretaps.
05:12Wiretaps.
05:13It's all about surveillance and listening in.
05:15Nice.
05:16Back to the Watergate scandal and all sorts now.
05:18All right.
05:19Let's move on.
05:20People are listening.
05:21Let's go to the numbers, Caroline.
05:22I'm just going to go one from the top, please.
05:24We shouldn't really ask anymore, should we?
05:26One large and five.
05:28A little.
05:29Thank you, Caroline.
05:30And the first numbers of the day are six, eight, ten, three, two and fifty.
05:39And the target?
05:40Six hundred and fifty-two.
05:41Six-five-two.
05:42Numbers up.
05:43We call it today.
05:44Bye.
05:45Now, don't hang out.
05:50All right, honey.
05:52All right.
05:53We'll move on.
05:54Thanks.
05:55Bye.

06:09Bye.
06:10Bye.
06:116-5-2, Caroline.
06:15I think I've got 6-5-2, but it's not fully written down.
06:18OK, Heather. 6-5-2. Go ahead, Caroline.
06:21Erm, 50 times 6 is 300.
06:25Yeah.
06:26Erm, 10 plus 3 is 13.
06:29That's not right, is it?
06:31No, it is. 10 plus 3 is 13.
06:33Yeah. Add it on.
06:36And I'm going to multiply by too many.
06:38I was going to do 8 divided by 2 is 4, which is not very helpful.
06:41Well, that gets you the 52, but it gets you...
06:43But not the 600.
06:441,200. Sorry.
06:46Just slightly out, just slightly out there, Caroline.
06:48And it is... I'd imagine Heather's going to show you
06:51how straightforward this one was. Off you go.
06:5410 plus 3.
06:5510 plus 3. Unlucky for some.
06:57Unlucky for Caroline.
06:57Times 50.
06:59650.
07:00Plus 2.
07:01652.
07:02Yes.
07:06Listen, she's been here all week.
07:08She's got the pressure of octo-champ there.
07:10And that means Heather takes a slight lead in their first break.
07:1317-15.
07:14With the first tea time teaser of the day,
07:16which is Lime Dare.
07:18Lime Dare.

08:21MUSIC PLAYS
08:52Heather? Seven. Caroline? Seven. And the word is? Booties. Same word? Booties, yeah. Yes. Yeah, very good indeed. And there was an eight. Boomiest. Very good, I didn't see that at all. Boomiest, just the loudest. Loudest, making the deepest, most resonant sound. Yeah, think of a proper good block party, you know, big stereo system, big bass fins. Love a tool for that now. Let's get back to the game. Caroline? Consonant, please. Thank you, Caroline.
09:21G. And another, please. R. And another, please. T. And another, please. S. And a vowel, please. E. And another vowel, please. I.
09:37And a consonant, please. P. And a vowel, please. Lastly, A. And you can have half a minute.
09:58A vowel, please.
10:29Generous letters again. Caroline? Seven. And Heather? Six. The six is? Grapes. Yes. And Caroline? Goriest. Goriest, grim word, but seven points. Ben and Susie?
10:45What about the eight-letter word? Goriest. Yes, wine. And pastoree, P-A-S-T-O-R-I-E. In South Africa, it's the residence of a minister of one of the Dutch Reformed churches.
10:56Thank you, Susie. And Caroline retakes the lead in another close encounter as we get our second numbers round of the day. Heather Telfer, you're choosing for the first time. Good luck.
11:06Two large, please, Rachel. Thank you, Heather. Two large this time. And four from the other rows. Four little ones are as follows. Ten, two, three, and nine. And the big ones?
11:19Twenty-five and seventy-five. And the target? One hundred and eleven. One eleven. Numbers up.
11:27You're out.
11:44Time's up, Heather, 1-1-1.
11:591-1-1.
12:00And Caroline?
12:02Yes, 1-1-1.
12:03Given that you always get the difficult ones and falter at the easiest ones,
12:06we were genuinely worried for you there.
12:08Heather, off you go.
12:0925 plus 75.
12:11100.
12:123 minus 2.
12:13Is 1.
12:149 plus 10.
12:15Yeah.
12:16A little bit of showboat nerd just before the goal.
12:18Caroline?
12:19I just did 9 plus 2.
12:21Yeah.
12:21Very easy.
12:22There you go.
12:23Well done.
12:25And that is 10 points each.
12:27Brilliant start.
12:28Fantastic Friday show so far as we head over to Dixonry Corner.
12:34I should probably say the history in 41 years and one day of countdown of magicians.
12:41And Dixonry Corner goes right back.
12:42When I was young, it was Geoffrey Durham.
12:43Mm-hmm.
12:44Paul Zenon.
12:45Mm-hmm.
12:46And Ben.
12:48So, I mean, is that the three?
12:50I think that's it.
12:50I think so.
12:51That's it.
12:51So it's a really kind of hallowed position, I think, in Dictionary Corner.
12:55And we've just loved this week.
12:56So what have you got for us today?
12:57Well, thank you.
12:58I've enjoyed it.
12:58I'm glad to be on that list.
13:00So here's the thing, though.
13:01When I got the call-up for Countdown, Dictionary Corner, amazing, got to do it.
13:05And Susie will tell you, I've been terrible at words all week.
13:08I'm not very good.
13:09So I decided to do a bit of practising before I got here.
13:13I was just studying.
13:14This is why this is all dog-eared.
13:15I had this notebook around with me.
13:17And what I did is I wrote down loads of random nine-letter words a few weeks ago.
13:21And I've just been looking at it.
13:22So, like, butterfly, landscapes, labyrinth, delighted, magically, obviously.
13:27A whole about 70, 80, 90 different nine-letter words.
13:31And I've been studying them.
13:32I thought it would help.
13:33It hasn't.
13:34But, Susie, let's try this.
13:35Can you take the pad for me, please?
13:37I want you to pick a random word out of those 70, 80, 90 words.
13:40Literally just lift up somewhere.
13:41Which word have you gone for?
13:43Intellect.
13:44Intellect.
13:44Lovely word.
13:45Lovely word.
13:46Intellect.
13:46We're going to try something with the word intellect.
13:49And, obviously, Countdown's not just words.
13:51It's numbers.
13:52So, let's try something with numbers.
13:53I don't have as good of math skills as Rachel.
13:55So, Colin, have you got a phone on you?
13:57With a calculator, something like that?
13:59On my phone, yeah.
13:59Yeah, can I borrow your phone with a calculator?
14:02I'll need to do my face.
14:03Do your face.
14:04Lovely.
14:05OK, yeah.
14:06Excellent.
14:06Right.
14:06Colin, give me a random two-digit number.
14:1042.
14:1142.
14:11Look, I'm going to put it up in 42.
14:13Then I'm going to press plus.
14:14I'm going to come over here.
14:15No one's been set up.
14:16No one's been pre-told.
14:17Do me a favour.
14:18Can you just don't even tell me your number?
14:19Just tap it in there for me, please.
14:21Which one do you have?
14:22Two digits?
14:22Yep, go for it.
14:23Oh, perfect.
14:24Press multiply for me, please.
14:25Perfect.
14:26I'll come over to here.
14:27And a two-digit number for me, please.
14:29And then press multiply.
14:32Perfect.
14:32Rachel, I'm not going to leave you out.
14:34What's your...
14:34Just think of a two-digit number.
14:36What would you like?
14:3719.
14:3719.
14:38I'm going to press one, nine, and then press equals.
14:41Ooh, got a nice big number here.
14:42We've got 52,710.
14:45Uh-huh.
14:45Rachel, can I write on the board?
14:47There's my pen.
14:48Is that allowed?
14:49Oh, wow.
14:50Just don't touch my tiles.
14:51I won't touch your tiles, all right?
14:52I'm literally living my dream right here.
14:54That number, and you can vouch for this, Rachel,
14:56is 52,710.
14:5852,710.
15:02I'd never get this job.
15:03Look how rough I am.
15:04But what if we did this?
15:07527.
15:10527.
15:10What if somehow this number connects all of us?
15:13Susie, do you remember at the beginning you picked a word,
15:15uh, intellect?
15:16Yeah.
15:17We're in Dictionary Corner.
15:18Have you got a dictionary?
15:19I have got a dictionary.
15:20Please, take the dictionary.
15:20Go to page...
15:21Go to page 527.
15:23527.
15:24527.
15:24I haven't done this for a while.
15:29It starts with 527.
15:30This can't not be what you think it's going to be.
15:32This can't be.
15:32527.
15:34Yep.
15:34What's the first letter?
15:35It's an I.
15:37And the last two digits were 10.
15:39Let's look at the 10th word.
15:411, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9.
15:44What is that word?
15:45Intellect.
15:46Wow.
15:47Oh.
15:48APPLAUSE
15:48He'll be looking more money next time he's on.
15:54Definitely.
15:55My goodness me.
15:56Back to the game.
15:57And Caroline, it's your letters.
15:59Consonant, please.
16:01Thank you, Caroline.
16:02T.
16:02And another, please.

16:15I.
16:17And another vowel, please.
16:19E.
16:21And another vowel, please.
16:23O.
16:26And a consonant, please.
16:31L.
16:32And a vowel.
16:34And the last one.
16:35E.
16:37Start the clock.
16:42Caroline, give me a number.
17:09Just six.
17:10And Heather.
17:11Six.
17:11Six as well.
17:12What are the words?
17:13Recoil.
17:14And?
17:15Same.
17:17Nice.
17:18Six points each.
17:19The dictionary corner.
17:21How did you get on, wizard?
17:22None of my magic powers, although we did get electro for seven.
17:26Yeah.
17:27Electric stuff.
17:27Five points in it.
17:28More letters from Heather, who's making her real fist of being the party pooper today.
17:33Off you go.
17:34Can I start with a consonant, please?
17:36Thank you, Heather.
17:37M.
17:37And another.
17:38F.
17:40And another.
17:42N.
17:44And a vowel, please.
17:46U.
17:47And another.
17:49O.
17:50And another.
17:52A.
17:53And a consonant.
17:56T.
17:58And another.
18:01B.
18:01And a vowel, please.
18:06And a final E.
18:08And here we go.
18:09And so one of us
18:13can see you tomorrow.
18:24Does that mean anything?
18:26That means, no, you do.
18:28And a vowel, please.
18:29And there we go.
18:30And a vowel in the attitude zone is saying,
18:31don't be a vowel.
18:32So one, you do.
18:34And that's what's called that tune into theantics.
18:34I can see you tomorrow, too.
18:36I can see you tomorrow.
18:37HEATHER
18:41Six.
18:42And Caroline?
18:44Seven.
18:45The six, Heather?
18:46Amount.
18:47And the seven?
18:48Boatman.
18:49Boatman?
18:50Yes, very good indeed.
18:51Anything else from Dictionary Corner?
18:52There was a little bit of deliberation at the end as we found, I say we found, a last-second-eight.
18:57Umbinate.
18:58What's the exact dictionary definition?
19:00Well, it's used mostly in botany, having a roundage knob or protuberance.
19:04OK, 12 points in it, numbers again, and Caroline, it's you.
19:08I'll stick with one large, please.
19:10Stick with one large.
19:11For the last time, we'll put you out of your misery.
19:13The last choice for a while.
19:14Thank you, Caroline.
19:15One large, five a little.
19:17And they are one, eight, four, two, ten, and 25.
19:24And the target, 392.
19:27392, numbers up.
19:29Let's talk to you good news.
19:30Good news!
19:32You are welcome.
19:34Pretty, perfect.
19:35Let's get started.
19:39Time, time to stop by last.
19:40It's my spare one.
19:44We came here.
19:45Theæ›´anear on the current clock.
19:46What could theicha?
19:47I loved her before the rough look.
19:50Then draw a commission on the other.
19:52THEY CONFER
19:59Time's up. 3-9-2. Caroline?
20:02I've done something stupid, so I'm on 3-9-3.
20:05One away. Heather? 3-9-1.
20:07One the other way. OK, off you go, Caroline.
20:10Erm... 8-2 is a 16.
20:13Yes. Times by 25.
20:16400.
20:18And then... What have I taken? I've taken away...
20:22Sorry, I've got to take away. I took away the 10 and...
20:27No, I didn't. I'm sorry. I can't read what I've written here.
20:30Aww. That's a dropped stitch.
20:32Oh, for goodness sake. Yeah, it's a dropped stitch.
20:35So, Heather, you can make up seven points. Off you go.
20:37Er, 25 plus 8 plus 2 plus 4.
20:418 plus 2 plus 4. 39.
20:45Times 10. 390. Plus 1.
20:473-9-1. One below.
20:50Well done, well done. I know you're a magician, Ben,
20:53but let me just... I can do mind reading.
20:55Sometimes I can tell what Rachel's about this.
20:58This is divisible by 8.
21:00It is. Shall we let Mr. Magic do it?
21:02Oh, go on. This is the only one I've got right all week.
21:05Yes, I've got...
21:0710 plus 2 plus 4.
21:1016. Multiply by the 25.
21:13400. Minus the 8.
21:15Well done. 390.
21:16Yes.
21:17APPLAUSE
21:18The two-time teaser then is so driest. So driest.
21:23So to prevent it being the driest chicken ever, I cooked it this way.
21:28So to prevent it being the driest chicken ever, I cooked it this way.
21:35And we didn't know rotist was a verb.
21:54Rotisserie. To cook chicken in rotisserie, there you go. Rotist.
21:58Rotisserie to cooked chicken and rotisserie. There you go. Rotest.
22:01Rotis, yeah.
22:02Then, Heather, you are up.
22:04Can I start with a consonant, please, Rachel?
22:06Thank you, Heather.
22:07S.
22:08And another.
22:09R.
22:11And a vowel, please.
22:13U.
22:14And another.
22:15A.
22:16And another.
22:17E.

23:21We did.
23:24Asperger's, A-S-P-E-R-G-E-S.
23:26It's the right of sprinkling the holy water in a Christian mass at the beginning of the service.
23:31Very good.
23:32Still five points in it, Caroline.
23:34You can see that finish line, but Heather's right on your shoulder.
23:39Off we go.

24:47It's getting tense in here, Caroline.
24:49That's seven.
24:50Seven from you. And Heather?
24:51Six.
24:52The six is?
24:52Around.
24:53And squeezing the seven in?
24:55Well, I hope...
24:56Unraced.
24:58Yes, it's in.
25:00What have you got for me?
25:02Yeah, we've got an eight. It is crayon.
25:05Nice. That would have got you eight, but the seven is absolutely vital.
25:09Twelve points of difference. Four rounds left.
25:14And Dictionary Corner, for final Origins of Words of this week.
25:18Really love these ones this week. Where are we going?
25:21Well, I am going to cartoons.
25:24Because most of us, I think, are very familiar with catchphrases from film and telly.
25:28But a few of us perhaps know about words that began life in comic strips or cartoons.
25:34I say few of us. Some of them will be very familiar.
25:36But, you know, we have coverling Hobbs and Peanuts, which I love, The Far Side, and many, many comic strips have actually catapulted words into the language.
25:47They didn't always create them.
25:48Sometimes they popularise them, which is the case with one that people will recognise, I think, if they're Simpsons fans, Embiggins.
25:54Because, yeah, it's probably one of the most famous contributions to English.
26:01Jebediah Springfield famously declares a noble spirit in Embiggins, the smallest man.
26:07Which, in Embiggins, is then questioned and then declared to be a perfectly cromulent word.
26:11It's not the OED's first record, though, because actually, in 1884, someone writing a letter holds it up as an example of a verb that is barbarous.
26:20They clearly don't like it, so it had been around for a while.
26:23And there are plenty more, so I'll come back to the topic on Monday.
26:29OK. Heather, you're up.
26:32Can I start with a consonant, please?
26:34Thank you, Heather.
26:35J.
26:36And another.
26:39S.
26:39And another.
26:41T.
26:43And another.
26:45H.
26:46A vowel, please.
26:48O.
26:50And another.
26:52E.
26:54And another.
26:56A.
26:58A consonant, please.
27:00R.
27:02And another consonant, please.
27:04And lastly, C.
27:06Countdown.
27:06E.
27:08But.
27:10 IS
27:16A consonant, please.
27:18And another.
27:19It's going to be a slogan for the National Anthem.
27:21With the word of measure, it's going to be a она-
27:23O.
27:24And that's time, Heather.
27:39Seven.
27:40And Caroline.
27:41Seven.
27:42Seven as well.
27:43Heather, what's your word?
27:44Roaches.
27:45Roaches.
27:46And Caroline.
27:47Coaster.
27:48Coaster and roaches.
27:49Two very strong sevens.
27:51Mr Ben.
27:52Yeah, we had a...
27:54That word that was yelled in my house a lot is coaster.
27:56Yes, we've got a seven.
27:58Yeah, chaster.
27:59You can be more chaste than the next person.
28:02And ratches as well.
28:04Lots of different meanings for this,
28:05including a white line down the face of a horse.
28:09OK, last letters round.
28:10Caroline.
28:11Consonant, please.
28:13Thank you, Caroline.
28:14D.
28:15And another, please.

28:18And another.
28:21T.
28:22And another.

28:26I.
28:27And a vowel.
28:29A.
28:31And another vowel, please.
28:33O.
28:36And a consonant, please.
28:39N.
28:41And a vowel, please.
28:46Good.
28:46It's a promising selection.
28:47A final E.
28:49Even better now, last letters.
28:51¶¶
29:20How many, Caroline?
29:23Yeah, I think I've got a nine.
29:25And Heather?
29:26Eight.
29:27Wow, you get beaten in an eight.
29:28What's the eight?
29:30Rationed.
29:30What's the nine?
29:32Ordinates.
29:33Yes, they are all there for nine.
29:34Wow.
29:36What a way to get primed an octo-champ with a maximum nine,
29:40which scores double points in 18 and gives you an unassailable lead.
29:45Now, congratulations, Caroline.
29:49Fantastic.
29:50Ordinates.
29:51Ordinates, straight lines from any point.
29:52Oh, a long mathematical definition,
29:54but what matters is it's in the dictionary, which is fabulous.
29:57And there were a couple of other nines.
29:59We had notarised.
30:01Yes.
30:02And one you were whispering to me.
30:04Well, I wasn't whispering.
30:05I was just like...
30:06I was whispering, yeah.
30:08Yes.
30:08D-rations.
30:09My thing.
30:10D-rations.
30:11Yeah, D-rations there as well.
30:12Right, three nines.
30:14But listen, Heather, what a performance by you.
30:17And someone needs to pull that out just to keep it away from the big finish.
30:22But listen, Heather, let's keep going.
30:23Two more rounds and we'll get your numbers.
30:25Two large, please.
30:26Thank you, Heather.
30:27Two from the top row.
30:29And four not to take us into the weekend.
30:31Final numbers of the week.
30:33Two, seven, eight, ten, fifty, and seventy-five.
30:40And the target, 872.
30:438-7-2, last numbers.
30:45One, two, seven, eight, ten, ten, ten, ten, ten, ten, ten, ten, ten, ten.
30:558-7-2, the final target of the week, Heather.
31:19No, I've not got it.
31:20Missed it, no worries.
31:21And Caroline?
31:22Sorry, I've got 862, I hope, but I haven't got it written down.
31:27Well, have a go.
31:32You're out of time, Caroline, going to rule you out.
31:35Sorry, I'm looking at the numbers on there and they've disappeared.
31:37After the high of the maximum, the low of the last numbers round.
31:41All yours, Rachel.
31:42A couple of ways, neither of them are particularly elegant,
31:44but you could have said 75 plus 50 is 125.
31:49Times that by 7 for 875.
31:53And then 10 divided by 2 is 5.
31:568 minus that 5 is a 3.
31:58And take it off, 8-7-2.
32:01One more round to go.
32:02Caroline and Heather, let's get your fingers on the buzzers
32:05as we reveal this Countdown Conundrum.
32:21Go on, Heather.
32:23Fluctuate.
32:23Let's have a look.
32:24Yes.
32:27Heather, thank you so much for coming on.
32:29I hope you're really proud of that performance.
32:31Caroline, I'll be honest with you, after the first part
32:35of your first appearance, I would not have been putting money on
32:38you becoming an OctoChamp, but you've been one of the best.
32:40I loved it.
32:41Did you have fun?
32:41I've enjoyed it most of the time.
32:44Right.
32:44But some really silly mistakes that I've made and I think...
32:48Yeah.
32:48Yeah.
32:49OctoChamp, Caroline McManus.
32:51APPLAUSE
32:52Thank you, Ben.
32:55First time having you in Dictionary Corner and, of course,
32:58you've just brought such positivity and happiness, so thank you.
33:01Oh, thank you very much.
33:02I've honestly loved every single minute and also watching you work.
33:05That, for me, blows my mind.
33:07So the whole show has been amazing.
33:08It's good, isn't it?
33:09And, Susie, I reckon, Caroline, first Gersey OctoChamp.
33:12That's making the papers.
33:13It's excellent, yeah.
33:14Oh, yes.
33:15Oh, she's going to go back.
33:16She's got to put a hood up and everything.
33:17I feel like I need to skip over there, though,
33:20for some training before the finals.
33:22Get my megaphone, get my drill sergeant.
33:24Oh, yeah?
33:24Get down and get me 75.
33:26150.
33:27125.
33:28Yeah.
33:28I like that idea.
33:29You're very welcome.
33:31Do push-ups for how far out you are when you do it.
33:33Listen, just very quickly, because, of course,
33:35most important thing are the viewers.
33:37I just want to say, Sally and Peter, who knit this jumper,
33:39randomly put yes at the top.
33:41And I don't know whether...
33:41We all listen to different things in the radio,
33:43but Zoe Balls, hugely successful and brilliant.
33:46Radio 2 at Breakfast Show.
33:49Do you remember when Tom Stevenson, the history maker,
33:52went the entire series without losing a round?
33:56I let out such a yes the next day with love.
34:00She had a bit of fun at my expense,
34:02saying, look at this response in a game of countdown.
34:05So ever since then in the radio,
34:07if somebody does something really well,
34:08she goes, you can have a column or a yes.
34:10So that's where that comes from, just so you know.
34:13So what a way to finish the week, Sally and Peter.
34:16Thank you so much for sending it in.
34:18What a week it's been.
34:19Can't wait to come back with two new contestants on Monday.
34:22Rachel, Susie and I will be here.
