00:00Start of the story a man whose name is Joel Barish wakes up and goes outside, sit in a car, and start driving.
00:06He is explaining about his random thoughts, how he ditched the work that day.
00:10It is the year 2004, and it's the Valentine's Day.
00:13He took a train to Mountac, he did not know why though.
00:17He also had to get his car fixed.
00:19He spends his time here and there, throwing rocks, writing something in notebook.
00:23Joel is looking to meet someone nice and good.
00:26Later, he is sitting in a cafe, where he encounter a woman putting something in her drink, but gets back to writing.
00:32Inside the train, he is approached by a woman.
00:35They are going on the same location.
00:37Women wonders if she ever seen him before, then she realized that he was at the cafe.
00:42Joel looks like a mature man, meanwhile, this girl a bit extrovert and would not stop talking.
00:47In a moment, she starts to introduce herself by telling her name as Clementine.
00:51He believed that her name is pretty, and tells her that it means merciful.
00:54She contradict him by revealing that she is not that great.
00:58She yelled at him and telling that she does not like nice guys, but later apologize as well.

01:06Joel tells her that he's got some things to do, like writing, to which she leaves, but not before punching him.

01:31Now she want to marry the nice guy Joel, where she explains how they will go on a picnic.
01:35Joel proceed to leave the premises, where she tell him to give her a call if he could, which would be nice.
01:41Joes does not waste any time and goes inside his house to call her.
01:45They start to have lovely conversation, where she ask him to go to a place next night.
01:49They go on a silent beautiful place, where they both lay down and talk about the stars.
01:54Not too long after, we find her sleeping in a car, where Joel is driving.
01:59She asks Joel to take her to his place for sleep, so she decide to take her toothbrush from her house.
02:04Immediately, a random guy comes to Joel's door and ask him if he can help him.
02:09In the next scene we see Joel is crying while listening to a sad song.
02:13Aichi drive his car to a place and walks in, where he is being followed by two men.
02:17This was really odd to see.
02:20After picking up a few mail letters, he goes inside and takes a mysterious pill and gulp it down with some water.
02:25It starts to take effect not after too long.
02:28Two men arrives in his apartment after he is knocked by the medicine.
02:32Joel starts to hallucinate that he is talking to his friend, while he is in deep sleep.
02:36We see a flashback, where Jo is explaining to his friend that one day he went up to Clementine with a gift.
02:42At her workplace she act like she does not know him anymore, to which Joel thinks she is punishing him.
02:47After listening to Joel's sad story, he present him with a card in which it was mentioned that she had erased her memory,
02:53and prohibit anyone to tell Jo about their relationship in future.
02:57He goes to the doctor while showing the card to him, but doctor clearly denies to tell him anything since it is confidential information.
03:04He mention this to his friend while panicking.
03:06He is very frustrated due to this unknown event.
03:10Joel decide to talk to the doctor again, but not about Clementine, but himself.
03:14Doctor tell him to collect everything he owns that was related to Clementine.
03:18After the mapping of those things are done, his assistants will then proceed to erase all the memory he had with Clementine.

03:26Next day, he is back to the doctor and meets Stan Fink, who is a skilled technician.
03:31They record the vital information regarding Clementine and himself along with his legal confession.
03:37Doctor explains that after the procedure he would feel if his relationship was just a dream.

03:46We get to know that this is just his previous memories, while he was in a deep sleep back at his house and in the presence of associates.

03:57Joel looks a bit angry at her because she is drunk.
03:59He thinks she is careless and probably spend the night sleeping with someone else because that how she make friends.
04:05Right after, he realized he spoke too much and apologized, but she is not there anymore.
04:10He is in a dream, while associates are on the verge to take all the memories away.
04:15While following Clementine on the street, he start to hear blurry noises from the associates.
04:20One guy is talking about Clementine, since she is his girlfriend now.
04:24Everything can be heard by Joel.
04:25He is back to a memory, where they are enjoying Chinese food.
04:28Meanwhile, Joel is figuring out if this is a dream or real.
04:32He does something to get Clementine's attention, but it does not work out.
04:36In one memory Clementine asked to have a baby, to which Joel criticized if she is ready to be a mother.
04:42They start to argue, which grows bigger and bigger, until someone rings the doorbell.
04:47It was the girlfriend of one of the associates.
04:49They steal a drink from Joel's house and proceed to drink and enjoy.
04:53While, Joel is having cute moment with Clementine.
04:55They are back to a moment, where Clementine was drinking a little extra and acting repulsive.
05:01Which Joel hated with all his heart.
05:04Right after Joel hears the associate, whose name is Patrick, calls her girl.
05:08Who is Clementine without memories and decide to leave, because she needs some help.
05:12Patrick comes at the Clementine's house, where she is feeling like she is not herself anymore.
05:16So they both decide to go Montauk, because she insists him.
05:20He calls his associate and take a leave for the day, while he picks out one of Joel's gifts and gives it to her.
05:26After seeing it, she admires him.
05:28Back in the memories, Clementine explains when she was a little child.
05:32She had a little doll called Clementine, who she usually would keep yelling at that she is ugly.
05:37She felt if she could transform her, she could be beautiful too, to which Joel start to kiss her.
05:43We also see a memory where Clementine is being taken away from Joel and he start to yell.
05:47Everything starts to forward in his brain, while he hears lots different noises from all the people.
05:52He hold her hand and walk into an unknown place and beg the doctor to wake him up.
05:57Slowly, he starts to be aware that he is in his bed.
06:00He is back to a dream, where he asks Clem to help him wake up.
06:03He does something and see that it worked.
06:06She suggests him to take her away and hide her somewhere, so that associates won't be able to erase his memory.
06:11He dreams of him being a child, where he see Clem as his Aunt Hemlin and dream about his mother.
06:17He does some acts that he used to do back in childhood.
06:20Meanwhile, one of the associates finds out a problem with the machine and it is going worse.
06:24He does not know how to fix it, so he ends up calling Dr. Howard.
06:28Doctor decide to come there and fix the issue himself.
06:31Back in the dream, Clem tells him to remember her, but Joel talked to Clem inside his mind, being jealous of her new real-life boyfriend Patrick.
06:39Doctor comes inside Joel's house and proceed to work on fixing his case, where Joes suddenly start to drown since Doctor deleted the files from there.
06:47He also induce him with a sedative.
06:49While all the memories are being deleted, he tried to save Clem from being erased.
06:54He again disappeared from the map.
06:56Next, Joel would find him in his childhood memories, where he was bullied once and gets bullied again.
07:02They go back to his house and changes the places to find Clem.
07:05He is back in his house and the next moment he is back into the beach covered with snow all around.
07:11Where Clem and Joel are playing and having fun and she disappears again.
07:15Doctor is really puzzled by this new mystery that he had found and looking for an answer.
07:19There her assistant ask him if he likes to hear quotes, to which he smiles and they start to talk about it.
07:25She calls him sweetheart and things starts to unfold, where she end up kissing him.
07:29Even though Doctor is hesitant, he goes near her and talk to her.
07:33Suddenly Doctor's wife comes and caught his husband red-handed.
07:37She leaves after telling the girl that she can have the Doctor.
07:40Doctor reveals to her that they had something in the past too, but she wanted to forget it so the procedure was done on her as well.
07:46We are back to Joel's dreams, where he asks if Clem wanted to go on a date with him, but she still disappear right after.
07:53Doctor's assistant looks for the tapes in the offices and confirms the obvious.
07:57We see Joel explaining how they met the first time, he was sitting on a stair and gets introduced to Clem.
08:03He acts introvert as usual, where she borrows a chicken and start to devour it.
08:07Their talk turns into friendship and they come to an empty house.
08:11They break into it and start to explore some drinks, but not too long after the house collapses.
08:15This is also one of his memories.
08:18In the end they kiss and he tell her that he loves her, before seeing all the flashes of dear Clementine.
08:24It is the morning, associate takes off helmet out of Joel's head and it seems like they finally did it.
08:29He slowly opens his eyes, looks at the window and feels very tired.
08:33Later on, we are met with the same scene from the beginning.
08:37Joel misses his work and take the train with a gut feeling.
08:40He is met with Peter, while Clementine is picking her toothbrush.
08:43She walks back in with a paper, there the associate called Mary explains everything about their memory wipe.
08:49Both of them were shocked to hear all the confessions and Joe's opens the door, to which Clem leaves.
08:55Clem starts to cry back in her house, but not too long after she drives back to Joel's apartment.
09:00She comes into his apartment, where Joel is also hearing his own recording of confession.
09:05This makes them emotional and Joel apologized to her.
09:07They don't know what to do next, it was too much for them to grasp.
09:11She also hears some criticism about her from the recording and decide to leave, even though Joel looks sorry.
09:17Immediately, Joel stops her from walking away.
09:20She explains how she is a big mess, but Joel only says one word, okay, as if he was okay, with any outcome in the future just to be with her.
09:28Which makes Clem cry and later they are both seen playing inside the snow in the end.
