00:00Hello and welcome to Bargain Hunt
00:03which today comes from Oswestry in Shropshire
00:06It's a county with some interesting claims to fame
00:10Charles Darwin was born here
00:13and it was also the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution
00:17Pretty impressive, right?
00:19Well, if you've got those fun facts, let's see if you can get this
00:23What do you think this is?
00:25It's made of cane and woven into a pattern
00:28All will be revealed later
00:30But first, let's go bargain hunting!
00:34Today's Reds and Blues will be searching for collectibles of this bustling antiques fair
01:01and there's plenty here to catch their eye
01:04Our teams both have £300 in their pockets and one hour on the clock to buy three items to take to auction
01:13One must cost £75 or more and there's also my shopping challenge
01:18Let's meet today's teams
01:21Hi, I'm Lois
01:22And I'm Dave
01:23And we're here to have some fun
01:24And get that golden gavel one
01:26Ooh, fighting talk! Now I hear you have a special dog
01:31Our dog is a therapy dog, Reggie, so we go round schools and hospitals with him
01:35I bet he could sniff out a bargain
01:37But what about you two?
01:39I'd like something quirky items, probably something animal related
01:43I like transport stuff, I'm really into cars
01:46So it's animals and cars, any tactics?
01:48I think we're going to try and spend as little money, aren't we, as possible, but on high quality items
01:54Good plan! Right then, let's see who you're up against
01:58Hi, I'm Ian
02:00Hi, I'm Ella
02:01I bring the knowledge
02:02And I'm in charge
02:03You sound confident. What are your hobbies?
02:07Well, I'm into real big, so I'm ready to go out there and tackle a bargain
02:10Yeah, both into the gym and fitness
02:13A strong team, but will there be any arguments?
02:17I'll be like, no, we're not having that and that's final
02:19And I won't argue anything for a quiet life
02:23Very wise. So what's on your shopping list?
02:27I really like, you know, antique jewellery, brooches as well, I think are really pretty
02:30Nice stuff, practical stuff, that's what we're looking for
02:34Those are the teams, let's get things started
02:38Gather round, teams, gather round!
02:41Are you looking forward to your shopping?
02:42Yeah! Absolutely!
02:42Brilliant! But what do you need before you go?
02:45Money!
02:46Who's having the money on the blue team?
02:48Me
02:48There you are
02:49And for the red team?
02:51Me!
02:52There you are, Lewis
02:53That's because they don't trust the dads
02:55Dads and daughters, eh?
02:57Absolutely
02:58What's the next thing you need?
03:00Challenge!
03:01Here we go
03:02Challenges for the dads?
03:03Thank you
03:04There you are
03:05What's the next thing you need? You can't go shopping without them
03:07An expert!
03:09Your experts await! Off you go!
03:11I wonder what they're hoping for in their experts
03:15Someone who's fun
03:17Knowledgeable
03:19Decisive
03:21Funny
03:22Somebody who's going to help us win
03:25For the reds, it's expert Leslie Caddell Spencer
03:30And her interpreter, Mike
03:32For the blues, it's Colin Young
03:34Well, nice to meet you
03:36Right teams, let's have a look in those envelopes
03:39An item with connection to dogs
03:43Yeah!
03:43A piece of antique jewellery
03:46I think we can manage that
03:48Yeah
03:48No problem at all
03:49Time to spin into action
03:52Shopping starts now
03:54So team, 60 minutes
03:57Let's go
03:58Let's go
03:59Right, we've got our money, we've got our challenge, let's do it
04:03Let's start
04:03Let's go
04:04The teams are off
04:05And something has already caught Ella's eye
04:09That's a bit like, look it's a fissle
04:11But that's a bit like, erm, I like a fissle because we're Scottish
04:14Jolly good
04:15What is it?
04:16What is it?
04:16A little mould?
04:17It looks like a mould, I assume
04:19Yeah
04:19It is pastry mould
04:20That's really cute
04:21Yeah
04:22I like that
04:22But not enough to buy it?
04:25No
04:25No, not enough to buy it
04:26It's a no to the pastry mould
04:29Over with the reds and Leslie spotted something unusual
04:33What about this?
04:35What is it?
04:39It's a glider
04:40Glider
04:40Maybe if we have a look at the blue one
04:43Doesn't look quite finished
04:45I don't think the condition is great, is it?
04:50No, I don't think that's for us, I think
04:52No, I don't think so, let's head in
04:53We'll move on
04:54Yeah
04:54Well, it was worth a look
04:57Meanwhile, Colin spotted a pretty brooch for the blues
05:01Ah
05:02Oh, I like an ah
05:04Could we have a look at that, please?
05:07There we go
05:08Lovely
05:09Thank you very much
05:11Ah, there we go
05:13You've got seed pearls
05:14You've got those two little rubies that are milligrain set
05:18And of course it's rose gold as well
05:20Would you like to have a close look?
05:22Yeah, please
05:22Well, it says Art Deco, but I think it's actually a little bit earlier than that
05:26I think it's probably about 1905, 1910
05:29Oh, it's so pretty
05:32But at 110, we would need to be a long, long way from it
05:36Oh gosh, yeah
05:36So would you like to make a cheeky offer?
05:39I think at auction we are looking at a price of maybe £60 to £80 on that one
05:44So we wouldn't be able to go any more than say £50
05:47Okay
05:48I mean, £50, would you do £45?
05:51We'll do £50
05:52I'll take that
05:52Do you want to go for it?
05:53Excellent
05:54Let's do it
05:54Excellent
05:55Well done, Blues
05:56£50 for the early 20th century brooch
05:59And your first item ticks off my challenge
06:02To find a piece of antique jewellery
06:04Right, so there we go then
06:07We've met the challenge
06:08It is antique
06:09It's a piece of jewellery
06:11One out of three done
06:12Perfect
06:13Let's move on
06:13Thank you
06:14Back with the Reds
06:16And they're also on the hunt for my challenge
06:19An item with a connection to dogs
06:21What year do you think this was?
06:25It's difficult to say because it doesn't have anything on as a stamp
06:29I'd say it's certainly made in the last 20 years
06:32Yeah, so it's quite new
06:33It is modern, yeah
06:35Shall we look at a few more?
06:37Yeah, do you want to ask?
06:38What's your price on this, please?
06:40It's £5 if you want to
06:42Auctions
06:46Usually they start at £10
06:50So if you're getting it for £5 or less
06:53To be honest with you
06:55If that went to auction
06:57You'd get more than £5 for it
06:59Yeah, yeah
07:00So it's almost a guaranteed profit
07:02Yeah
07:03There's also that
07:05What's that?
07:06What is it?
07:08Is that a lion or is it a dog?
07:09No, no, no, let's have a look
07:10Oh, there's a perfume spray
07:13That's quite cool, isn't it?
07:16That looks like a dog to me
07:17I can do it for a father as well, if you want
07:19Aftershave lotion
07:21And is that
07:21Is that a dog or is that a lion?
07:24I think it's a dog
07:25Would you do £4 for it?
07:27Go on then, yeah
07:28Yeah
07:28Yes
07:29£4
07:30Great work, Reds
07:32£4 for the novelty dog perfume bottle
07:35Well, that's the challenge in the bag
07:38Well done
07:38And our first item
07:40Just two more to go
07:42Meanwhile, the Blues have moved on to ceramics
07:45Colin, what about the Dalton there?
07:48Yeah, Dalton can be a bit hit and miss at auction
07:50So on the wrong day, you just might get the wrong price
07:54Yeah
07:55Yeah
07:55Okay
07:56Nothing else exciting?
07:58So if we go down this way then
07:59Keep going, Blues
08:02But carefully, Ian, don't get left behind
08:05Over with the Reds
08:07Lesley's seen a vintage pedal car
08:10So £120 for this
08:13It doesn't have to be
08:15It could be your big buy
08:16It could be
08:17And I love cars
08:19I love anything to do with cars
08:20And it's a yellow one
08:21Just like your one at home
08:22Absolutely
08:23Having a look
08:25The wheels, I'd say, might have been replaced
08:28But that's quite usual
08:30Yeah
08:30But it looks like the paintwork is crackled across here
08:35Yeah, so that's original
08:37Is that original?
08:38Yes, yes
08:38Yeah
08:39And looking here
08:41Yeah
08:42So that's got the wear you'd expect
08:44So it's been played with
08:45On the back
08:45It's been played with the love
08:47What do you think a good price would be?
08:52Well, for me, £50
08:53But
08:54Try £75
08:56For your big buy
08:57Negotiator
09:00Key negotiator
09:01Hi
09:02Nice smile
09:02Hello
09:02Yes, fine, thanks
09:04Are you?
09:04What's your best price on the car, please?
09:06Best price?
09:07I'm looking for about £100
09:08I'll do £99
09:09Ooh
09:10A bit too high
09:11Can you do £70?
09:12I can't do £70
09:13I'm not making much at all
09:15No
09:15No
09:15I was about
09:16I'll go as far as £89
09:18Can you do £84 and we'll have a deal?
09:21Yes, I'll do £84
09:22Aw, thank you
09:23For a pound
09:23Thank you
09:24Thank you so much
09:26Thank you
09:26Brilliant
09:27Cheers
09:28Great haggling, Lewis
09:29The vintage pedal car for £84 is your second item
09:33And meets your big spend
09:35So how are you feeling, Reds?
09:39Pretty good
09:40Really, really good
09:41We've got our dog item
09:42Which we're really happy with the first challenge
09:44And then over £75
09:45Which is absolutely amazing
09:46Yeah
09:46Two items that really mean a lot to us
09:48Just one more to go now
09:50Back with the blues
09:52And Ian spotted this
09:54I love that
09:55The horseshoe with the matches
09:57The matches
09:57What do you think?
09:58Oh yeah, that's alright, isn't it?
10:00I like that
10:00Good look
10:02The White Horse Cellar
10:05Yeah
10:05Established 1742
10:07Right
10:08This ashtray also includes a matchbox
10:12Featuring a local Shropshire man
10:14Captain Matthew Webb
10:15Who was the first to swim the English Channel
10:17In 1875
10:19Probably been put on a bar in a pub
10:22Or something like that
10:22What do you think?
10:24What's your thoughts auction-wise?
10:26Auction-wise, it will be very desirable
10:27But not necessarily going to be biggish money
10:31What sort of money are they looking for on it?
10:33So it's at £55
10:34Yeah
10:35Do you think that's too much for what we would need?
10:37I think it probably is
10:38Yeah
10:38I think you're going to be more in
10:40You know, it's certainly going to be in the range of £25 to £40 at auction
10:43So
10:44Ah, so yeah, not quite there
10:45No, it's not quite there
10:46I mean, you can always see if there's a deal to be done
10:49If you like it enough
10:50How much would you be able to...
10:52I could do it at £45
10:53I only do £10 of it
10:54So £45
10:55Too much
10:56I think that's a bit too much
10:57Yeah
10:57OK, we're looking for
10:58Thank you anyway
10:59Cheers
10:59Yeah
11:00We're halfway through the shopping
11:02And it's a good time to leave the teams
11:06And reveal today's mystery item
11:08So here it is
11:12Let's take a closer look at it
11:13So it's made of cane
11:15It's got an intricately woven top
11:19And it's got a long handle
11:21But what could it be?
11:23Let's see if anyone here can guess
11:26Do you know what?
11:28I have no idea
11:29Is it a tennis racket?
11:30It looks like something you'd hit, like, flies with
11:35Reminds me of, like, a fan
11:38Er, could it be some sort of instrument for, like, I don't know
11:44I feel like for sifting something
11:45Oh, dear
11:47I think they may need some help
11:49Something to do with cleaning
11:51Oh
11:52That's completely throwing me
11:54Erm
11:55Cleaning
11:57Maybe to clean, like, a chimney
11:59Cleaning something
12:02Oh, OK, right
12:03Carpets
12:04Would it be?
12:06At last
12:07A rug
12:08Basher
12:10Is it a carpet beater?
12:14Yes, it is a carpet beater
12:16A carpet beater?
12:18Yeah
12:18I don't think I've ever seen one
12:19Oh, OK
12:20No, that makes more sense now
12:22I know you said it
12:23Rug or carpet beaters were mainly used during the Victorian era
12:28And the early 20th century
12:30Most were made from cane, wire, wood or spring steel
12:34And came in a variety of patterns and shapes
12:37These handy gadgets were a great help in removing dirt and debris from rugs and carpets
12:44But in those days we didn't have fitted carpets, we had rugs
12:48So to clean them you had to take them outside
12:51You would simply hang your rug over a washing line or railing and then beat it continuously
12:58So the shape and construction of this woven paddle enabled it to be strong enough to beat the rug
13:08Releasing the dirt whilst not damaging the fibres
13:12It wasn't always a popular task though
13:16It could be strenuous and unpleasant
13:18Especially with very large rugs
13:20In the late Victorian Edwardian period
13:24Many rugs were made of natural fibres
13:27Which were delicate
13:28So to prolong the life of the rug
13:31You needed to use the correct beater
13:33The number of strands was important
13:36As it affected the strength and flexibility of the beater
13:40A two strand beater was more flexible and less rigid
13:44So would have been used on a more delicate rug
13:46Those with three or four strands like this were stronger and sturdier
13:51Now the Victorians took rug cleaning pretty seriously
13:55And they had many techniques up their sleeves
13:58Of course the most common method was to take your rug outside and give it a good shake
14:05But did you know that the London Metropolitan Police made it an offence in 1839
14:13To take your rug outside on the street and beat it or shake it
14:19However, you could shake your doormat as long as it was before 8am
14:27Eventually machines began to make life easier
14:31In 1907 James Spangler invented a carpet sweeper
14:35With an electric fan, a box and a rotating brush
14:39Spangler sold his patent to his cousin's husband
14:44None other than William Hoover
14:46And the famous Hoover Company
14:48Turned the household vacuum cleaner into a commercial success
14:52So in just over a century, we've gone from this
14:57To this
15:00I know which I'd rather use
15:02But now it's back to the shopping
15:05To see if our teams can vacuum up any last minute bargains
15:09With half an hour left on the clock
15:12The Blues still need two more buys
15:14While the Reds need one
15:16And they're looking at more motoring items
15:19So what do you think of that, Lesley?
15:21I like it
15:23Viking
15:24It's a car badge
15:26Car badge, oh and it screws onto the bonnet
15:28Yes
15:30This Viking head mascot was introduced in the 1920s
15:34As a symbol of the Rover brand
15:36A Viking was considered appropriate for the company
15:39As the word Rover means wanderer or seafarer
15:43Think this is profitable?
15:44If you can reduce it
15:48I'd say to round about £20
15:49I think what's he got at the moment
15:5230 is a bit high
15:53But if you can get it down
15:55As much as possible
15:57Then there's a chance
15:58So you need to flutter your eyelids
16:00Me?
16:01I think that's her department
16:04What's your best price on this?
16:07£20
16:07It's a third off the price of Spark
16:09Can you do £60?
16:12I'm afraid not
16:12Come £19
16:14I would say £20 is not bad to be fair
16:18It's from an old car as well
16:22There are collectors that collect bonnet badges
16:24So I'd say £15 to £30 auction
16:29So I think it might be worth taking a chance
16:31It's different
16:32I think it's definitely worth thinking about
16:35We've got a little bit more time
16:36Shall we...
16:38Yeah, there's plenty of time
16:39We'll come back
16:40Yeah
16:40Yes
16:41Good idea
16:42Maybe
16:42Maybe
16:43Maybe
16:44So the Reds continue their search
16:46And the Blues have made a U-turn
16:50I'm still thinking about that match striker
16:52You like the match striker
16:53It's on the brain
16:54If we do it for £40
16:54Yeah
16:55We've got a chance
16:56Could we sweet-talk him?
16:58Yeah
16:58Because...
16:59You two really like that
17:01I'm still thinking about it
17:02And I think we're going to regret it
17:03If we don't buy it
17:04Right
17:04Shall we go back and get it?
17:05If we do it for £40
17:07If we'll do it for £40
17:08Go for it
17:09Because you clearly both like it
17:11And it's not massive money
17:13Is it?
17:14While the Blues head back to the match striker
17:17Lois has taken a shine to this
17:19What do you think of this lamp?
17:21It's...
17:22It's modern
17:22It's more modern
17:23Yeah
17:23It is more modern
17:25The old-fashioned ones
17:27Go for a lot of money
17:29Yeah
17:30Yeah
17:30I think we'll leave it
17:31We'll leave it
17:32No?
17:33Okay
17:33That's fine
17:34That's a firm no then
17:37Now what's the news
17:39Who's on the match striker?
17:41Who's asking?
17:42I will
17:42You go on, Ella
17:43You go for it
17:44Hello
17:44Hello
17:45Hello
17:46We can't stop thinking about it
17:48And I'll just...
17:50I'll be cheeky
17:51Would you please do it for £40?
17:53Because then we'll definitely have it
17:55Go on, you go for a lot of money
17:57Oh, thank you so much
17:58Wonderful
17:59Thank you, that's a deal
17:59Thank you
18:00Thank you very much indeed
18:01We're very happy with that
18:03Well done, Ella
18:05At £40, this novelty match striker is your second buy
18:09Pleased with that then?
18:11Absolutely
18:11Excellent skills
18:12So we've got one thing to do
18:14£75 spend or more
18:16Let's go do it
18:16Let's go get it
18:17So, Blues, how do you think it's going?
18:22Very well
18:22Well, I thought we'd be faster, honestly
18:24I'm a little bit nervous that we've not got the last one yet
18:27With... I don't think we've got the last one
18:28We'll smash it
18:29With 20 minutes to go
18:31Both teams are searching for their final buys
18:34And Lois has found a toast rack
18:37I quite like the look of this toast holder
18:39I think it may be silver-plated though, isn't it?
18:42Yes, it is
18:43Yes, it is
18:45I mean, it looks more Art Deco
18:50It does
18:52So, it's got a little bit of wear on it
18:56But it would have to be quite a good price
18:59Yeah
19:00So that's £35, what do you think a good price would be?
19:03No
19:04Too high
19:04Yeah, I would say if we could get it down
19:07It might be better
19:09Might be worth asking the stall holder
19:10Yeah
19:11While the Reds find the stall holder
19:13How are the Blues getting on with that big spend?
19:18Nothing's really catching my eye
19:20Do we need to go back?
19:22Um, shall I just do a quick run on those stalls
19:27And see if there's anything that might just tick the box to save us?
19:30You look at the glass
19:32I'll leg it there and I'll be back in two shapes
19:34The word run, we'll leave that to you
19:36He's off
19:38While Colin runs off in search of some last-minute deals
19:44Can the Reds strike a deal on the toast rack?
19:47Bottom line
19:48I'll do it for £19 for you
19:50I mean £19 is not bad, to be fair
19:53What do you think, Dad?
19:55I really like it
19:56But I did see a mirror over there, though
19:58You'd better find it quickly, Reds
20:01Only ten minutes left
20:02OK, let's go!
20:04Now, how did Colin get on with his search?
20:08Is he running with a table?
20:09Oh, it's a chair!
20:10God, it's a chair!
20:11What is it?
20:16The things you do, Phil
20:18What is a chair?
20:19Ian, would you like a chair?
20:20Absolutely
20:21Take a seat
20:21That's quite a nice chair, really
20:24Right
20:25Oh, do you know
20:26There we go
20:27That'll do
20:2718th century
20:28Very nice
20:29I like it
20:29Oak, nice panel
20:30They said they'd do it for £75
20:32Oh, OK
20:33What do you think it'd do at auction?
20:35I think it's on the money
20:36You might do a bit better than that
20:38It's that sort of thing
20:40It certainly always should be at least £50 or £60
20:43It shouldn't be any worse than that ever
20:47It might be £100 on a good day
20:49You never know
20:49So what do you think?
20:50So you think
20:51Well, I mean, people are willing to pay for good furniture, right?
20:54Especially antique good furniture
20:55Two chairs
20:57I've got the best of the two
20:59This is a good chair
21:00OK
21:01That's one possibility
21:03What did you find on the glassware?
21:05Anything you know?
21:06Nothing really, no
21:07No?
21:08Let's go for the chair
21:09You want to go for the chair?
21:09Let's go and meet the chair
21:10We've got ten minutes
21:11Nice find, Colin
21:13So whilst the blues head to the stall holder
21:16What did Lewis and Leslie think of the mirror that Dave spotted?
21:20Oh, I really like the look of that
21:22Oh, do you think it's hand-painted?
21:26Oh, yes, it is
21:27Yeah
21:27And if you have a look here
21:28Yeah
21:29You see how the light reflects off it?
21:31Yeah
21:31This mirror depicts a geisha
21:34An iconic Japanese symbol of beauty and femininity
21:38How much is it on the ticket?
21:41How much is it on the ticket?
21:41So it's £20 on the ticket
21:43OK
21:44OK
21:45Do you think that could make a good profit?
21:50Possibly
21:50I think possibly, yes
21:51If it was a nice lower price, maybe?
21:56Yes, you'd have a much better chance
22:00What do you think, Lewis?
22:00Yeah
22:01Shall we ask what the best price is?
22:02What's the best price for these ladies?
22:04Well, I think just to give you the edge of the chance on this
22:07We're going to be really good and do it for ten
22:10Oh, really?
22:11Yeah
22:11Do you think you could do it for nine?
22:13Come on
22:14Come on
22:16As it's the end of the day, yes
22:19Thank you very much
22:21Well done, Reds
22:22That's your shopping complete
22:24£9 for the enamelled handheld mirror
22:27And I think we've got three really good items
22:30I think we do
22:30So I think we're in Golden Gabble
22:32I do
22:33So now it's time to rest
22:36Let's go and get ourselves a cup of tea
22:37And claps
22:38Fantastic
22:39Good plan
22:40Let's go
22:41The Blues are still thinking about chairs
22:45But will they buy one or two?
22:48You can spend more and buy two
22:51£75 for that one
22:52Yeah
22:53Or £140 for the two
22:54But you think that is
22:57Well, that is the better of the two
22:58But that doesn't mean that that's a bad one
23:03£75 for that one
23:05£75 for the one chair
23:06Yeah
23:06Happy?
23:07That works
23:08Great stuff, Blues
23:10This 18th century oak chair rounds off your shop
23:13And meets your big spend
23:15That's it, shopping's over
23:19Well done, that's it
23:20I think it's teas all round
23:21Sounds like a good plan
23:23Thank you, cheers
23:23Thank you very much
23:24Now let's remind ourselves what the Red team bought
23:28They started with my challenge
23:31Buying this novelty dog perfume bottle for £4
23:34They bought the vintage pedal car for £84
23:39Which was their big spend
23:41And their final item was the enamelled handheld mirror for £9
23:47Lesley, how were they?
23:51They were brilliant
23:52They really were
23:54Yeah
23:54They decided what they wanted and they went for it
23:57Brilliant
23:57And which is your favourite item?
24:01I think the mirror was my favourite in the end
24:03And I think we got a good bargain
24:04Very pretty
24:05And what about you, Dave?
24:07Well, I like the car
24:08It was big and brush and yellow
24:10Yeah
24:11Your thing
24:12And your big spend?
24:13Our big spend as well
24:14Two boxes
24:15Nice thing
24:16And which do you think is going to make the most money?
24:19Again, I think the mirror
24:20We got a really good bargain at the end of the day
24:22Well done
24:23And what about you?
24:24I've got to agree, I think it's the mirror
24:25I think it was, it has a certain something
24:28Yeah
24:28Excellent
24:29Well, you've spent £97
24:32Yeah
24:33Leaving £203
24:35For her wonderful Lesley
24:38So if you could hand that over, please
24:40Ooh, lovely
24:43Thank you very much
24:46That is a tidy sum
24:48Any ideas what you're going to spend it on?
24:51It is, it is
24:52Something that's going to please both of them
24:54Lovely, I'm sure you will
24:56So while Lesley goes off
24:58To buy something to please them both
25:01Let's remind ourselves what the blue team bought
25:04Their first buy was the rose gold brooch
25:08Which met my antique jewellery challenge
25:11£50 paid
25:12Next they bought the horseshoe match striker
25:17For £40
25:18And they finished their shop with their big spend
25:23£75 for the 18th century oak chair
25:26So, have you had a wonderful, wonderful day?
25:30It's been great fun
25:31It's been so good, yes
25:32How were they, Colin?
25:34Brilliant
25:34It was a great shop
25:36We've got some items we like
25:38Felt a little bit pressured
25:40Right at the end
25:43Now, which is your favourite buy?
25:47Favourite buy is the little match striker and ashtray
25:50And what about you, Ella?
25:51Which is your favourite?
25:52Exactly the same
25:53It's the one that we were both thinking about
25:55And had to go back for
25:56So, definitely that one
25:57Which do you think is going to make the most money?
25:59I think it's going to be the little rose gold brooch
26:01I think that's going to
26:02We got that at a good price
26:04Which was my challenge
26:05To buy a piece of antique jewellery
26:07Absolutely, yes
26:08And what about you, Ella?
26:09I have a feeling it'll be the brooch
26:11Ah, OK
26:13So, you spent £165
26:17Leaving £135 for Colin
26:20So, if you could hand it over, please
26:23There we go
26:25Thank you very much
26:26Spend it wisely
26:27So, Colin, any ideas what you're going to do with it?
26:31Not really many ideas
26:33Because we were sort of struggling towards the end
26:35So, I'm just going to have to recap and see what's out there
26:39So, while Colin goes off in search of his bonus buy
26:43I'm heading over to the auction
26:45I've come to Maxwell's in Stockport
26:48To meet auctioneer Tom Blackmore
26:50Hello, Tom
26:52Hi, nice to see you
26:53Lovely to be here
26:54And we'll start off with the red team
26:57Dave and Lois
26:58Ably led by Lesley
27:00And their first item
27:02Was this novelty aftershave bottle
27:05It was also my challenge
27:08An item with a connection to dogs
27:10So, it certainly kicks that off
27:12That's nailed it, yeah
27:13Yeah, now, what do you make of that?
27:16Interesting
27:16Avon named
27:18I suppose it will do for any dog lover
27:22Who loves aftershave
27:24I can't imagine there's a huge market for it
27:27But, yeah
27:28What have you estimated this at?
27:29£10 to £15
27:30Well, £4 only paid
27:33So, they should be in with a profit
27:35Yeah, they should be a bit in it for you
27:36And then, they went on from the sublime
27:39To slightly more money
27:42This pedal car
27:44Now, what about this?
27:45Do you like it?
27:46I do
27:46It's quite an interesting vintage child's toy
27:51They can make quite a bit of money
27:55Especially the racing versions
27:56Again, it needs a little bit of work on it
27:58But overall, it's in pretty good condition, really
28:01And what's your estimate?
28:02£60 to £100
28:03Well, £84 paid
28:05Yeah, I think there's plenty in there for them
28:08And it should do quite well
28:09Good
28:10Fingers crossed
28:11And their third item was this Japanese hand mirror
28:15Yeah, a very pretty little mirror
28:17Yeah
28:18Not a lot of age to it
28:19But it's a nice display piece
28:21And in a box as well
28:22Which is quite a good gift
28:23Something like that
28:24And what's your estimate?
28:26£10 to £15
28:26Well, £9 only paid
28:29Not a bad collection, really
28:30No
28:31Interesting, anyway
28:32Right, and then we'll move on to the blue team
28:35Which is Ian and Ella
28:37Led by Colin Young
28:39And they started off with my challenge item
28:42Which was to buy a piece of antique jewellery
28:45And they bought this little brooch
28:47Now, what do you make of that?
28:48It's a nice, pretty brooch, this one
28:50They're getting more and more popular
28:52Sort of the early 20th century brooches
28:55Nice stones in it
28:56Not too over the top, but a good size
28:59So what have you put on that?
29:01£50 to £80
29:01Well, £50 paid
29:03So they should be in with a profit
29:05Yeah, I think they should do well on that
29:07Good
29:07And their next item was the Shelley Match Striker
29:11In the form of a horseshoe
29:12Interesting piece, this one
29:13Advertising wear for white horse
29:15Quite sort of pub-related again
29:18Quite collectible in that way
29:19So I think it's in for quite a good chance
29:23Nice matchbox with it too
29:24Good, and what's your estimate?
29:26£30 to £50
29:27Well, £40 paid
29:29Yeah, I can still see there's a bit of profit in there for them
29:32And their third item
29:34Which was also their big spend
29:36Was this 17th, 18th century oak chair
29:40Now, do you like it?
29:42Personally, I do like it
29:43Yeah, me too
29:44These days, it's not everybody's cup of tea
29:46It's quite a dark piece
29:48But it's got such a good amount of age to it
29:52Yeah
29:52It's still in such nice condition
29:54It's just not the most fashionable, we'll say, these days
29:57So what have you put on it?
29:59£20 to £40
30:00Whoops, they paid £75
30:03I think, unfortunately, it might be a little bit over the top for that one
30:08Oh dear, you're going to have your work cut out
30:10Good luck, Tom
30:12Look forward to it
30:13Thank you
30:13It's in the room at £110
30:15£120

30:30Never
30:31Wow, they're going to love it, aren't they, Lesley?
30:33You will, you will
30:36Now, your first item, which was my challenge, to buy an item with a connection to dogs
30:42Yeah
30:43And you bought that really nice Avon aftershave bottle, didn't you?

33:28This is a Rover car...
33:30An old car badge
33:32The P4
33:33And it goes on to the radiator
33:36As the little mascot
33:38How much did you pay for it?
33:41£20
33:41And how much do you think it'll make?
33:45Hopefully between £25 to £40
33:49Because they're very collectible
33:51Oh, right
33:52We need to try and make it in profit
33:54So I think we should give it a go
33:55You're definitely going for it
33:57Yes, absolutely
33:58Let's find out what our auctioneer thinks
34:00About Lesley's car mascot
34:02Yeah, it's a nice piece, this one
34:05Yeah, it should do quite well, I think
34:07Good

34:10£15 to £20
34:10Well, £20 paid
34:13I think they should be OK with that
34:15So I've had a word with the auctioneer

35:23Are you excited to be here?
35:25Absolutely
35:25Really nervous
35:26Oh, don't be nervous
35:27They've got nothing to worry about, have they?
35:29No, it's going to be great
35:30Have you been to an auction before?
35:34One
35:34A long time ago
35:35A long, long time ago
35:36Really?
35:37And you've never been to an auction?
35:38Never
35:38So this is really cool
35:39Oh, this is the start of a lifetime of auctions
35:42But you'll get the bug, I promise
35:43Right, your first item, which was my challenge
35:46A piece of antique jewellery

38:44Okay
38:45Right, open your eyes
38:50Oh, it's the other one
38:52That looks familiar
38:55The other chair
38:56Okay, it is
38:58The key question is, Colin, how much did you pay for it?
39:00On this occasion, I paid £50
39:03Oh, and how much do you think it will make?
39:05Ah, I don't need to estimate it, because you're now the expert
39:09You have seen one of these chairs, you have seen the market as it stands today
39:14So you'll know whether you think there is a profit or not
39:19I think, yes
39:20We made £10 profit on the other chair, so
39:24We did, and we're a team, and I think we should stick together
39:26And I think we should go to Colin's bonus buy
39:28Yeah, I think we should do it, for sure, yeah, definitely
39:31You're definitely going with it?
39:32Yes, committed to the chair
39:33Well, let's find out what our auctioneer thinks about Colin's bonus buy
39:38It's an interesting piece again
39:41A really solid traditional antique
39:44Would look fantastic in the right place
39:46Yeah
39:47Hopefully we can find the right person for it
39:49Brilliant, and what's your estimate?
39:51£20 to £40
39:51Colin paid £50 for it
39:54Hmm, it could well get there
39:56It is a really good piece
39:58But as I say, not as popular as it used to be
40:01Well, I'm sure you'll do your best
40:02Thank you
40:03I've had a word with the auctioneer
40:07And he likes Colin's chair
40:08It's estimated it at £20 to £40
40:10But don't worry
40:12Because he also estimated the other chair at £20 to £40
40:15And it made £85
40:17Yes
