This The Video I Made For Reba McEntire Fans Only As Well As Family And Friends MGM/UA Film Production Of Reba McEntire New Movie I Never Be In The Movie Yet but I will soon enough, Enjoy The Short Video Folks
00:00This is the complete animation of Dixie from the Fox and the Hound 2.
00:24I think I want to start this commentary by just talking about the movie itself.
00:33This movie has no reason to exist, and I kind of love it for it.
00:42The big thing is that the story that it tells has absolutely nothing to do with the Fox and the Hound.
00:53Basically, Todd and Copper run to a fair, and Copper ends up joining this group of singing dogs.
01:03And it's like, there's nothing there that requires them to even be animals at all.
01:13They could literally just be humans, and almost nothing would change.
01:19Replace Copper's owner with being just his dad.
01:25And also, like, the whole thing about Todd getting angry at Copper because he's going off and not hanging out with him...
01:41It makes it sound as if this has been going on for months and that the kid isn't able to see his friend anymore.
01:51But like, in all actuality, it's all happening over one evening.
01:58It's like what? Maybe noon when they end up actually going to the fair?
02:05And over the course of just one afternoon and one evening, their entire friendship is being called into question.
02:15Like, holy cow.
02:18Narratively, this movie has issues.
02:25But visually, holy cow, am I glad this movie exists.
02:30This is some of the greatest animation to come out of Disney Toon Studios.
02:38Like, just look at the character animation.
02:43It's like, yeah, you take a character model and then you draw them doing things and voice and lip syncing and moving around.
02:52Like, holy cow! This movie just is so expressive and dynamic with its characters.
02:59Like, I am firmly of the opinion that if you truly love the medium of animation, then you can appreciate problematic, lackluster stories just because you enjoy watching the work of animators.
03:22And this movie is certainly a showcase of that.
03:26And it does it by leaning really hard into what modern tools bring.
03:35All of these characters are clearly all done completely in computers.
03:40Like, I doubt that there is hardly anything, you know, done to physical paper or anything like that.
03:49But it does it really well.
03:52And there's just something appealing about clean, vectored outlines, but still hand-drawn.
04:00I don't think I'll ever get tired of it.
04:02It's like, if you...
04:05It's not like it's a replacement for real hand-drawn stuff.
04:09Like, take the 2011 Winnie the Pooh, for example.
04:15That movie really shows you what you can do when you stick to the classic art style, but you just completely lean into all the modern tools of digital art that you have.
04:31And I absolutely love it.
04:34But at the same time, there is an undeniable charm to...
04:38Especially when you see it in HD.
04:40When you look close, you can tell, yeah, this really is just hand-drawn stuff...
04:46Transposed onto a basically clear piece of plastic.
04:54I'm not sure what old animation cells are made out of.
04:57But...
04:58And then just laid on top of the background layer.
05:01Like, there's some real charm to that, too.
05:03But this modern stuff...
05:06There's a lot of...
05:09Value here, as well.
05:12Um...
05:13Like...
05:15A lot of value.
05:19Um...
05:21Yeah.
05:22I'll just go ahead and say it.
05:23I think the Fox and the Hound 2 is better than the Fox and...
05:26Than the original.
05:28The original...
05:29In terms of story.
05:31In terms of story.
05:32Obviously, the first one is beautifully animated as well.
05:38Um...
05:39But...
05:40I think that narratively, even this one, with all of its problems...
05:44I think is a better, more enjoyable film.
05:49Um...
05:51And...
05:53While...
05:55I think that story-wise...
05:57I think that this movie has, like, almost no reason to exist.
06:00Like I said before...
06:03Visually...
06:04This movie is a treat.
06:06Like...
06:08Such a treat.
06:09And...
06:10Like...
06:11It's quality...
06:12It...
06:13It shows, like, everywhere.
06:15Um...
06:16Films around this time...
06:18Especially, like, straight to video ones.
06:21If you...
06:22Like...
06:23There's a ton of times when...
06:25They have, like...
06:26Low quality textures...
06:28Or...
06:29Assets.
06:30And then the camera just can't help but zoom into it.
06:33Like, um...
06:35Just...
06:37Like...
06:38Like...
06:39Some of the, uh...
06:40First Land Before Time sequels...
06:42That...
06:43Um...
06:44Started coming out...
06:46Um...
06:47Where...
06:48You know, they weren't all hand-drawn.
06:50Um...
06:51They used digital stuff as well.
06:54Like...
06:55There are so many times...
06:57Where it's like...
06:58A scene...
06:59Just zooms into some texture...
07:01You're just like...
07:02Wow!
07:03I am looking at a compressed JPEG!
07:05How lucky am I?
07:06But...
07:08Um...
07:09The Fox and the Hound 2...
07:10Doesn't really have that problem.
07:12And so...
07:13Yeah, like...
07:14This era of...
07:15Straight to video animation from Disney...
07:19Like...
07:21If you watch all the top 10 videos about, like...
07:23You know, the top 10 best and the top 10 worst, um...
07:26Straight to video Disney movies...
07:28Because...
07:29They only care about the narrative.
07:31It's just like...
07:32They only care about the story it tells and how well it's told.
07:36And I think that is so short-sighted.
07:40Because...
07:41Like...
07:43I am a firm proponent that...
07:46Like...
07:48Good animation is the best part of anything here.
07:53And...
07:54Good narrative is just gravy on top.
07:57Um...
07:58But yeah, so...
07:59Narratively...
08:00Oh yeah, I totally agree.
08:01This movie is like...
08:03Totally worthy of going down to the bottom of the bucket.
08:07But...
08:09From almost any other metric...
08:12This movie is really good.
08:15Like...
08:16Visually, it's pretty...
08:17It's really good.
08:18Um...
08:19I don't think anybody complains about the audio.
08:21It's like...
08:23Audio is one of the things that...
08:26Um...
08:27People basically never comment on.
08:29Unless it's bad.
08:31Or...
08:32Really good.
08:33And...
08:34I don't think anybody ever talked about...
08:36The sound effects of the Fox and the Hound 2.
08:39In any of their, you know...
08:41YouTube reviews.
08:42Where they're...
08:43You know, trying to be...
08:44So clever about...
08:46You know...
08:47Talking about this movie.
08:49But like...
08:50Like...
08:51Yeah, they don't talk about how...
08:53How it sounds.
08:54And it sounds...
08:55Just fine.
08:56Like...
08:57And that is an accomplishment.
08:58Like...
08:59Anybody who works in sound design...
09:01Would probably tell you that if...
09:04Somebody watched something...
09:05And they never even talked about the sound...
09:07They're like...
09:08Oh good.
09:09I did my job.
09:12But...
09:13Yeah.
09:14Um...
09:15Yeah, let's talk about the actual character of Dixie now.
09:18Um...
09:19Dixie is actually a pretty fun character.
09:21Um...
09:22She's got that...
09:24Sort of a...
09:26Southern Belle...
09:27Sort of a thing going on.
09:29Um...
09:30She...
09:31Talks with...
09:33You know...
09:34That sort of a...
09:35Accent dialect or whatever.
09:38And...
09:40Um...
09:41Like you can tell that...
09:43Her voice actress...
09:44Was having a fun time reading these lines.
09:47Especially when...
09:49Um...
09:50The lines have...
09:51We like...
09:52Call attention to the fact that she has that sort of an accent.
09:54Like...
09:56Yeah.
09:57Um...
10:00And...
10:01I think that...
10:04Yeah...
10:05Dixie...
10:07Is...
10:08Interesting...
10:10In...
10:11Um...
10:12She sort of continues the tradition of...
10:15Disney dogs...
10:16Where...
10:17Like...
10:18For some inexplicable reason...
10:20The...
10:22Dog has...
10:23The female dog has extra fur around her head...
