00:00This is too much. That's a lot.
00:01I was a troll.
00:02Ask me that question, he's answering it.
00:05Guys, congratulations on the movie.
00:07Thank you. Thank you so much.
00:08Every time I see Jordan Peele's name on something now,
00:11I know it's going to be messed up,
00:13which is weird considering how long he was this shining light
00:18in someone who's going to make you feel good and fluffy inside
00:21and make you laugh.
00:23So the best place to start, I guess, Marlon, with you, mate,
00:25you've kind of danced this line between humor and fear,
00:29comedy and horror, like, for a while,
00:32but we've always felt kind of held in your humor along that way.
00:37What's your take on how Jordan's sort of turned his back on this world
00:41and now is so immersed in the horrors and the scares?
00:45Do you think you could ever do that?
00:47Could you ever kind of just put a pin in that part of you?
00:49Absolutely. Because it's like when you're doing comedy,
00:54you have this huge light.
00:55And then when you start doing drama and horror
01:00and it gets twisted, it's turning the light off.
01:03And now you just have one little flashlight on,
01:06not even a full flashlight, it's like a phone light.
01:09And you're just in this dark space exploring.
01:12And it's a lot more fun than the light.
01:14This is too much. That's a lot.
01:16When you get to focus that light and turn it off
01:18and maybe turn it red and make it weird,
01:20that's fun to explore.
01:22That's what I was able to do, I mean, for me, for Isaiah,
01:25I got to own that same kind of dark light that he lives in.
01:30Do you think you could do that, like, every day, though?
01:32Like, week on week, year on year,
01:34and just be like, this is me now.
01:35I'm living in the darkness.
01:35This is easy compared to comedy.
01:38I'll switch.
01:40Comedy's hard.
01:41But there were moments in the film
01:43where Isaiah was really funny, too.
01:46Because, I mean, because he's dark.
01:48Yeah.
01:48And he's twisted.
01:49And I think it's fun that a bad guy has fun.
01:51I think it's testament to your performance in this.
01:54There was, like, whenever you're known for humor
01:56and then you do something serious,
01:58there's always, as an audience member,
01:59you're kind of, you're waiting to be told,
02:02hey, it's okay, I'm still here.
02:03I'm going to make you smile.
02:04I'm going to make you laugh.
02:05But I thought there was a kind of darkness
02:06in you throughout this.
02:08So there was moments when it was funny,
02:09but it was, like, awkward funny.
02:11Like, when your mate says something
02:12or you're introduced to somebody
02:13and you don't know if they like you yet
02:15and they're, like, taking the mick out of you
02:16or they're actually, like, giving you a hard time.
02:20So I enjoyed that.
02:21I was done with intention, right?
02:23Anytime I cracked the joke,
02:25it was because I was trying to humiliate him.
02:28It was coming from a bad place.
02:30I was insecure.
02:31And Isaiah was insecure
02:33and he wanted to humiliate him.
02:35He wanted to twist him.
02:36He wanted to hurt him.
02:37He wanted to, you know, cut him in some kind of way.
02:41So that's where the humor came from.
02:42So, yeah, it was uncomfortable.
02:44It wasn't like someone was playing nice.
02:47Tariq, I heard you,
02:48I looked at some clips from the US premiere
02:50and you talked about you guys' relationship on set
02:52and there was a sort of, like,
02:54a brotherly thing that sounded like it was both,
02:58Marlon giving you a bit of a hard time,
03:00as, like, a big brother would do, like, hazing.
03:01But then because of the performances in the movie,
03:04like, I see it and I'm like,
03:05was there some of that, like, hard edge?
03:08Were you, like, trying to put him in an awkward space
03:10because of the actual,
03:11what you were trying to put on camera?
03:12How did you feel around that?
03:14And how different has he been
03:15since you finished filming?
03:18I did it the whole movie.
03:20Yeah.
03:20I trolled him in a light way.
03:22Yeah.
03:23Marlon to Tariq.
03:24I would, I would, I was a troll.
03:26I apologize.
03:27He's trolling me right now.
03:28Because you asked me that question and he's answering it.
03:32No, but, you know, having a brother,
03:35I don't know if you have siblings,
03:37but, like, I had an older brother who passed away.
03:40But, like, the, you know, it's wrapped up.
03:43The love is wrapped up into, like, the humor,
03:45the jokes, the hard times, you know.
03:47Luckily, me and Marlon kept it light, you know,
03:49like, the, you know, the cool arguments.
03:52He'll say he's better at pool.
03:53I say I'm better.
03:55But, you know, that fun competition.
03:57And then the jokes.
03:58And, you know, he'll, he'll throw a party.
04:00I'll throw a bigger one.
04:01Yeah.
04:03I throw a potluck and he throws something
04:05that he paid for the entire thing.
04:07But, yeah, I think that, that,
04:10that made the film even better.
04:12And also, you know, he'd give me certain,
04:15you know, improv moments.
04:17And I know part of his improv was messing with me
04:19in the scene.
04:20And I think the one word I can think of is permission.
04:23We gave each other permission to just go to those,
04:25those extents to get that reaction from each other.
04:31And I think that permission from him and Justin
04:35is why you get what you get from Isaiah White.
04:38That's really sort of the kind of,
04:40the start of his career in many ways.
04:42And the movie seems to be, like,
04:44muses on various different things,
04:45like the trappings of fame and ambition
04:47and manipulations behind the scenes,
04:50what people project onto you
04:52when you're on a rise into kind of a public sphere.
04:55You guys have kind of lived in the public sphere
04:58for a longer time now.
04:59Was this movie at all kind of cathartic in a way
05:02because of the experiences you've had
05:05in your, like, being thrust into the spotlight?
05:08And it sounds silly to say
05:11because of the kind of movie it is,
05:12but how, like,
05:13were there any kind of realistic areas
05:16of the kind of people you've been around
05:17as you've, like, tried to navigate your careers
05:19and the people you've had to, like, watch out for
05:22as you've gone about your business?
05:24Definitely.
05:25Yeah.
05:26I think it's a cautionary tale.
05:30So there's a, so when you,
05:32when things,
05:33I don't want to give too much away
05:34because it does become quite graphic
05:36and stuff like that.
05:38There was no one in your mind's eye,
05:41you won't have to name any names,
05:42but mind's eye when you're like,
05:43oh, it'd be nice if this happened in real life
05:48at any point with the kind of people.
05:49It all does happen in real life.
05:52You know, you've seen it all.
05:53You've seen the wild parties.
05:55You've seen the, you know,
05:56what people, the bad mentors.
05:58You've seen, you know,
06:00what people were willing to sacrifice
06:01for fame or for success
06:03or just for opportunity.
06:05And, you know, I think it's a,
06:07you know, a lot of it is,
06:08I think a good movie has to resonate.
06:10Yeah.
06:11It makes you feel a certain way.
06:12It makes you think about
06:13if I was in that experience.
06:15It's like, I look at this movie
06:16and I go, I feel the same way,
06:19but different about like
06:20Requiem for a Dream.
06:21It was a movie that was so impactful.
06:24Like it made me put down the weed.
06:28I'm good.
06:30I'm good.
06:31You know what I mean?
06:31Maybe it changed me.
06:33It made me look out
06:34when I think this movie has the same effect.
06:36Except Requiem,
06:37it crashed through the ground.
06:39Those rollercoaster went up
06:40and crashed through the ground
06:42and everybody died.
06:43It was like final destination.
06:45This movie is,
06:46it goes up,
06:47it goes down
06:48just when you're about to hit the floor.
06:49It twists,
06:50it goes back
06:51and then stops
06:52on a dime
06:53and then it goes backward.
06:54And you get off the ride
06:56and you go,
06:56I don't know what happened,
06:59but I want to do it again.
07:01I was thinking about that movie
07:02because again,
07:03when people put their expectations on you,
07:05we know you from comedy for so many years
07:07and you forget sometimes
07:08that you're in these very dark,
07:10there's some dark roles
07:11along the way as well.
07:12I think people need to stop
07:14like differentiating comedy
07:16from drama
07:17because I think that comedy
07:20and laughter
07:21is a tool
07:22that really hurt
07:25or like people
07:26that are in pain
07:27use.
07:28You know what I mean?
07:29Like it's all the same.
07:31It's two sides
07:32to the same
07:33like scale
07:34or spectrum,
07:35I guess.
07:36Like they go hand in hand.
07:37You can't be funny
07:38unless you've been through some shit.
07:40So that's why I think
07:41comedians are the best
07:43dramatic actors
07:44and I've got to witness that
07:45firsthand
07:46with multiple comedians now.
07:49That's a very good point.
07:50The whole like tears of a clown.
07:51It's not its own thing.
07:52They're not two separate things.
07:53They are one.
07:54And you often find
07:55like even great dramatic actors,
07:57they've done some good
07:57like comedy roles along the way
07:58but it always seems to be
07:59the other way around
08:00where they kind of excel.
08:02I've never seen a great
08:03dramatic actor
08:04do an hour of stand-up.
08:06Something goofy,
08:07crazy,
08:08and make you laugh.
08:09Making somebody laugh,
08:10evoking that emotion
08:11to the majority of a crowd.
08:14You have to really strike a chord
08:15inside someone's like
08:17like soul, psyche.
08:19And I think audiences
08:20are kind of open to it as well
08:21because when you see
08:22somebody who's used to
08:23making you feel good
08:24and smiling laugh so much
08:25looking like they're in pain,
08:27there's part of you
08:28like you're giving yourself
08:29to them as well.
08:31It's like seeing a family member
08:32as someone you love in pain
08:34and you're kind of
08:35invested in that way.
08:36I want to touch on American football.
08:39It's not as good
08:40as real football obviously
08:41but it does seem to be
08:42the most cinematic sports
08:45of all time.
08:46there's very few good
08:48like real football movies
08:50or shows that kind of
08:51encapsulate that excitement
08:52whereas there's you know
08:54Remember the Titans
08:55and Friday Night Lights
08:56Any Given Sunday.
08:57There's just like so many
08:58American football movies.
09:00Why do you think
09:00this sport and this world
09:02is as cinematic
09:03as it is?
09:06What lends itself
09:07to be so enthralling
09:08visually
09:09and the stories behind it?
09:10I think the violence
09:11is one of the elements
09:13you know
09:13the violence
09:15the camaraderie
09:16the brotherhood
09:17the desperate
09:17fight to win
09:19everybody
09:19when you watch a movie
09:20you're looking for an elixir
09:21winning is an elixir
09:23so you're rooting for somebody
09:25who's willing to put
09:26their life on the line
09:28every play
09:28just to win this little
09:31trophy
09:32and it's loud
09:34so when crunching
09:35of the helmets
09:36and you play that
09:37on THX
09:38it affects you
09:39you know
09:40I went to watch
09:40this movie
09:41in 4X
09:42and it was wild
09:44it was blood
09:46every time
09:46you know
09:47the helmets collide
09:48the water hitting our face
09:50and we was going
09:50up and down
09:51and you feel the hits
09:52and I'm telling you
09:53it was a
09:54that was a roller coaster
09:56so it was a hell of a ride
09:57I just think that
09:58you know
09:59there's a lot about
10:00the sport
10:01football
10:01and that's why
10:02I'm happy
10:03athletes are starting
10:03to make more money
10:04you know
10:05there's a lot of
10:05athletes that suffer
10:07a lot of damage
10:07after the sport
10:08and you know
10:10but would you ask them
10:12would they do it again
10:13they'd smoke a cigar
10:14and blow it out
10:15in your face
10:16and go hell yeah
10:16I think you make a good point
10:18about the sound
10:19as well
10:19I mean
10:19I don't remember
10:20many good rugby movies
10:22and that's violent
10:23but like the thud
10:23of bodies just clashing
10:25together is one thing
10:25but the cacophony
10:27of noise
10:28that comes from
10:28something like
10:29American football
10:29anyway guys
10:30I enjoyed it
10:31it was messed up
10:32but messed up
10:34in a good way
10:34thank you
10:35and I hope you guys
10:36continue making movies
10:38that kind of scratch
10:38that itch
10:39as you go on
10:40and hopefully
10:41I'll still be
10:41big props to Justin
10:42Tipping who
10:43I honestly say
10:45I think this is
10:45my favourite movie
10:47I've done
10:47awesome
10:48even over Requiem
10:49yeah
10:50different
10:51I think
10:52I was able to
10:53for me personally
10:55I think
10:55Justin
10:57this character
10:58Isaiah
10:58and
11:00in the hands
11:01of Justin
11:02Justin allowed me
11:03a lot of freedom
11:03and
11:04Darren gave me
11:06wonderful direction
11:07he's a great director
11:08as well
11:08but
11:09I didn't have the
11:10freedom on Requiem
11:11as I had
11:12on this
11:12this was untethered
11:14well let's see
11:15how Scary Movie 6
11:16does
11:16because it might
11:17blow it out of the water
11:18who knows guys
11:19you
