00:00Welcome to Sam's Garage presented by NH Oil Undercoating.
00:30Coming up on Sam's Garage, our Bandit Trans Am project is finally buttoned up and Atlanta's
00:54own Tim Phillips takes the wheel to see if this build lives up to the legend.
01:00Then Wade stops by to check out a Mustang with a secret under the hood.
01:03An LS swap so clean it'll fool even the sharpest eye.
01:08Next we roll in a 49 Chevy street rod with a modern Hemi for some much needed maintenance,
01:13an oil change, wheel balance, and safety checks to keep it running strong.
01:17And finally we're at NHLU's facility where JR, Taylor, and Joey show us the right way
01:22to apply rust protection and the equipment that makes it all possible.
01:26All that and more right here on Sam's Garage.
01:36After six months of wrenching, the Trans Am is finally finished and we've got a special
01:41guest behind the wheel.
01:42Straight out of Atlanta, Tim Phillips takes the Bandit build for a shakedown.
01:47The car looks good, it sounds mean, but the big question is, will it run?
01:52It's time to find out Sam's Garage style.
02:00This is Mark Morgan, he's from Virginia, he's a fan of the show.
02:03He had the 79 Bandit, it's all numbers matching.
02:06So we took out the 400 small block Pontiac and we're going to put an LS engine.
02:11It's a beautiful engine and it's a great way to start the season off with such an iconic
02:16car.
02:17Everybody loves Smokey and the Bandit.
02:19We're going to be installing the engine and transmission.
02:23I've got a good friend of mine's son here, Sterling Kester.
02:29So anytime you guys do an upgrade like we just did where we swapped out the whole powertrain,
02:33you're going to want to update the instrument cluster so you've got proper readings and
02:37you can monitor your new investment.
02:43It really turned out nice, maybe we can resurrect the Bandit to come pick it up.
02:47That would be really cool.
02:48That would be cool.
02:50Finally got the Trans Am done, sure it took a year, not really, it took about six months,
02:56but you can't rush perfection.
02:57And I got a special person test driving this car.
03:09All right, we got our own Bandit, Tim Phillips from Atlanta, Georgia.
03:29Sam, the car looks great and it sounds great too, but will they run?
03:35There's only one way to find out, bye bye baby, bye bye.
03:42Sorry, I'm not a ride share.
03:51Oh great, well that makes two of us.
04:11Does this thing move?
04:13Oh yeah.
04:18Does a cop taking a leak on the side of the road interest you?
04:35Yeah it does, honey.
04:36He's taking a 10-100.
04:37Better than a 10-200.
04:39Let's see what he's got under the hood.
04:43That looks good.
04:46That looks good.
04:48It is me.
04:49That looks good.
04:50I love you.
04:51Could be a good night.
04:53I love you.
04:55Did that 36 waves get out?
04:56I know.
04:57Yeah a lot of that were there.
05:02Is that what's done?
05:04I love you.
05:06I know I love you, but I love you.
05:08I love you, too.
05:09I love you.
05:10Really, Bandit?
05:27These things happen, Sam.
05:30What did you think of the car?
05:31Man, the car's a speedy car.
05:32Speedy car, you did well.
05:33Thank you so much.
05:34Who do I send the bill to?
05:35Big and little Enos Burdett.
05:36Got it.
05:40Sam's Garage is presented by NHOU.
05:50Brought to you by the following companies.
05:52Welcome back to Sam's Garage presented by NH Oil Undercoding.
06:19Wade drops in to check out a Mustang with a big surprise under the hood.
06:30What looks like an old school FE is actually a clean LS swap.
06:34Thanks to Holley's full lineup of parts.
06:37It bolts in, it runs strong, and it keeps the classic Ford style proving once again, cool
06:43is cool.
06:44My good friend Wade stopped by, so I said, you know what, dude, check this out.
06:48I got a Ford, and he was here when the 347 was in it.
06:51And so I shocked him.
06:52What do you think, Wade?
06:53I think it's amazing.
06:54I mean, it looks like a big FE motor, and it's an LS.
06:58It is.
06:59Incredible.
07:00It's pretty cool.
07:01And you're right.
07:02It does look more like an FE than it does a Windsor.
07:04It could look like a Windsor only because of the individual ports that make it look like
07:08a Windsor on the LS, right?
07:09Right.
07:10It's small.
07:11It's got the same type of frame as a Windsor.
07:13I didn't even have to cut the mounts off on the K-member to make this thing fit.
07:17Just bolted right in.
07:18It just kind of bolted right in.
07:20A little welding.
07:21That's it.
07:22But man, it's pretty cool, huh?
07:23That low car front kit on it looks really good.
07:25The distributor makes it.
07:27And I'm really curious.
07:29These are hooked to the plug wires.
07:31Yeah.
07:32These are actually the plug wires.
07:33Yeah.
07:34You literally are running a front distributor on this thing.
07:36Is that pretty cool?
07:37But there's not a distributor here.
07:38Uh-uh.
07:39That's crazy.
07:40That is pretty crazy.
07:41But that's the magic of what makes this look old school.
07:42It really works.
07:43The front runner, you know, they all have the same, you know, you can look at different
07:47motors and you see, you don't really care about the front runner.
07:49But when you look at this, that's what your eyes is on.
07:51And the only thing that you can see is that LS series on that MSD box.
07:55Black spray paint.
07:56Take care of that.
07:57There you go.
07:58Yup.
07:59And what made it easy was he had a sniper on the 347 or should I say the 302 and he had
08:09a bracket, right?
08:10So this bracket made it very easy for me to just R and R.
08:14The same four bolt plans.
08:16You just take this off, slide in an LS, set it back down.
08:20Bam!
08:21And now you got a reliable Mustang.
08:22Crazy.
08:23It makes double the fuel economy.
08:25And probably does wicked burnouts.
08:27Absolutely.
08:28The whole purpose is.
08:29So what we got to do now is fill up the fluid.
08:31We got the power steering, the coolant.
08:33We have the transmission to fill up.
08:34So we're going to get those things done.
08:35A few little electrical connections.
08:36And this thing should be ready to drive on the street.
08:39And do burnouts.
08:40Better do burnouts.
08:41Better do burnouts.
08:42If it doesn't, I'm in trouble.
08:43No, it'll do burnouts.
08:44It'll do burnouts.
08:45All right, so what Wade and I just did was button up the crucials, really.
08:56When it comes to the alternator, you wouldn't have charging without a ground strap because
08:59we've got painted, anodized, deal, make it look pretty, right?
09:02There's always a price to pretty.
09:04And then when it hooked up the power wire for the AC compressor, we do have to run aground
09:09there.
09:10Same situation with the alternator.
09:11Right.
09:12Luckily, the oil sending unit wire we just took out of the loom, out of its bracket, and
09:16it was able to reach.
09:18Right.
09:19Because we know on a 347, it's way down on the left front corner.
09:23Yep.
09:24But here, on our FE motor.
09:26Yep.
09:27That's all good to go.
09:29All right, we've got Vic 66 Holley LS swap completed.
09:46Now, you guys, if you want to do an engine swap, like I said, go to Holley.com.
09:49They've got over 70 brands under their belt.
09:51They've got everything you need, whether it be a domestic or an import.
09:54And so what do you think, Wade?
09:56I think it's awesome.
09:57I mean, it looks great.
09:58The best part is when you open the hood, somebody's going to look at it.
10:01They're not going to know it's an LS right away.
10:03They may figure it out, but then they're going to go, wow, that's really cool.
10:07That's pretty cool.
10:08And you guys, cool is cool.
10:09Some people don't like Chevy engines and Fords or the Hemi engine in my Chevy.
10:12Right.
10:13But cool is cool.
10:14So this is one of those situations where it's cool and the hood closes and clears by quarter inch.
10:19Hopefully it won't torque too much, huh?
10:20Inch is as good as a mile.
10:21All right, cool.
10:22Thanks for coming by and helping out.
10:23Thanks for having me.
10:24Here we go.
10:31.
10:32Nora.
10:33She's a Hot Rodgers of Tomorrow.
10:36She's been doing this, getting her hands dirty.
10:37And you've been working with your dad building torques, and welding.
10:40converters and welding. Yes. And you love it. Yes. And even if you decide not to do this as a trade
10:45in the future, you still have the knowledge where you can work on your own cars and do it with your
10:50future kids one day, right? Yeah. And that's very powerful. We were donated this Porsche by Mike
10:55Giamarco from the Porsche Club of America. This group of kids who are in this trade school who
11:01want to be future tradesmen have got together on a Friday away from their normal school curriculum
11:07and they volunteered their time. They called themselves the Gearhead Academy and they had
11:11to completely rebuild this Porsche, taking out the engine, redoing the whole interior, everything.
11:16So we went to Robins Auto Top in Oxnard, California. They were generous enough to donate the top for
11:23the Porsche project. So I want to say thank you to you guys. We went to Angela and Mark over at
11:28Eibach Suspensions and they were nice enough to donate the suspension and the sway bars for the
11:33project. And the future kids can come and see the examples of their work and projects. And they
11:37want to do their own academy and put in their own time on Fridays and do this project and continue
11:42this thought. Welcome back to more Sam's Garage presented by NHOU.
11:57The 49 Chevy street rod with a modern Hemi is back in the shop. After 700 miles on its fresh build,
12:03it's time for some routine maintenance, an oil change, wheel balance, and some chassis inspection.
12:08From simple service tips to keeping custom classics road ready, Sam shows how to keep the miles rolling
12:14strong. All right, so I got my brother's Chevy Hemi project back in the shop. If you guys remember,
12:20I built this with my brothers on season eight, nine, and I put 700 miles on it. So it's time for a
12:25little bit of maintenance and there is no dipstick. So I'll show you guys how to make sure that you get
12:29the right capacity of oil in your engine. And I'm going to balance the wheels because when I got
12:33the tires from tire distributors of Georgia, I did not have my Corgi Master 28 tire machine and
12:38balancer. So I'm going to go ahead and train the oil. I got me a new Ford filter, put new fresh oil
12:43in it and balance the wheels. And I got to do a little bit of maintenance on the running board for
12:47the passenger side. I got to do a little bit of gusseting for reinforcement so that the next person
12:52that steps on it, it won't bend away. What I like to do when I pull in a car for any kind of service is I
12:57want to first roll down the driver's side window just in case something happens. Then what I want
13:01to do is I'm going to keep the key in a position to where I can still turn the wheels. Before I rack
13:06it, I'm going to open the hood, check the fluids, take off the oil cap, put it upside down somewhere
13:11where I can visually see it. That's going to tell me that there's no oil in the vehicle. Now that I've
13:14got the oil cap off, I've got everything good. It's racked up. I'm going to go up in the air. I'm going
13:18to make sure I'm on the locks of the rack. I'm going to drain the oil, completely drain the oil. While the oil is
13:23draining, go ahead and pull out your flashlight and do a good visual inspection underneath the vehicle. Look at the
13:27brakes, look at the tires, the alignment wear, check the whole thing out. Make sure that you don't have
13:31to recommend anything for the customer because when it comes to the front end and the steering,
13:35it's all about safety. So you want to make sure they're safe. So anytime you guys are doing a
13:39maintenance on your car and you have greasable joints, in this case being that it's on a 92 S10
13:43chassis, I do have several points where I can grease the suspension. So I went ahead and did that.
13:48And if you guys remember last time that we worked on this truck, Bob Douglas from Modern Supply came in
13:53and we did sway bar end links and new tie rods. So right now when I hit the left blinker, because
13:58my wheel is a little bit cocked to the left, it doesn't allow to terminate on its own. So for me
14:03to bring the steering wheel back straight, it's just a quarter of an inch. So I have to lengthen the
14:08tie rod on the front side of the control arm. I will do it equal distance on the passenger side
14:13and that's going to get my steering wheel straight again until I make it to the alignment shop.
14:17So in this case, I need to go one full turn on both.
14:26In my case, because I had a little vibration, so I went ahead and balanced the wheels. And because
14:32I have a staggered setup, meaning the rear wheels are wider than the front wheels, and I have
14:36asymmetrical tires, meaning that they only go on one way, they're not directional. So in this case,
14:41what I did was I swapped the wheels left to right on both the front and back. That way they go into the
14:46opposite direction, and it'll keep the tire smooth and quiet for a long time. So now that everything
14:51is good, we've got the wheels back on, we've got the torque back in, put it on the ground,
14:55go ahead and check and make sure you have the proper oil capacity in your car. Let's say you
14:58don't have a computer like I do. And so what you want to do is, if it's a V8, you start with five
15:02quarts. Put the five quarts in, crank the engine, let everything fill up, and check it. If it's a V6,
15:07start with four quarts. If it's a four-cylinder, start with three quarts. Then when you're all done,
15:11turn on the lights, do a good light inspection, make sure everything is working, because I can't tell
15:15you how many times I'm going down the road, and the car in front of me has got no brake bikes,
15:18and all I think about is, man, that guy's loop tech completely failed them.
15:23All right, so for those of you who may not be familiar with this truck, this is a 1949 Chevy
15:28truck. It sits on a 92 Chevy S10 chassis, and it has a 2006 Hemi from a 5.7 Dodge truck in it.
15:36And it worked out really nice. It's got a five-speed TKX behind it. I did not have to cut the firewall,
15:41and nothing really matches as far as the lines go, but it's an awesome rat rod that everybody loves
15:46and enjoys seeing driving down the road, and that's what it's about. When these things sit,
15:50no different than when we retire, they start to die. So don't do that. Get out there and drive
15:54your custom cars.
16:00Sam's Garage is presented by NH Oil Undercoding.
16:05It's brought to you by the following companies.
16:07Welcome back to Sam's Garage, presented by NHOU.
16:29We're back at the NHOU facility where rust protection gets hands-on.
16:39JR and his son, Taylor, walk us through the proper application on a Ford F-150,
16:44while Joey breaks down the tools and systems that make it all possible.
16:48From prep to spray, this is how NHOU dealers keep vehicles protected for the long haul.
16:56Back at the NHOU facility, and this week we're going to be showing you about
16:59application and the equipment used. We got JR and his son, Taylor. They're actually dealers,
17:04and they're going to be doing all the instructional pointers today as far as the application goes,
17:08and of course we got Joey. He's going to be explaining the equipment.
17:11So I'm JR with JR's oil rust proofing. We're going to kind of go over what we just did in the
17:16bay there in the shop. So we were oiling a 2013 F-150. So the first thing we're going to do is we're going to cover
17:24the windows and the glass to minimize overspray you get from getting on your windows. And then
17:29we're going to go through and fog the body cavities, insides of your doors, your fenders,
17:33box sides, tailgate area.
17:35What about you, Taylor? What are you going to be doing?
17:37Most of the time, my job when we're spraying, I help prep. I mean, we blow it off, get any dirt out.
17:43And so what exactly, I mean, I know you guys spray mostly everything, but I see you guys do the
17:47bottles of the doors, the door jams, anywhere that there is two of the similar metals that are
17:51attached together, you spray everything you can, right?
17:53Yeah, we spray everything we can in those areas. We'll spray the hinges, we'll spray the door latches,
17:59anything that's a moving component in the vehicle, we'll spray.
18:01That's cool. Now, JR, where exactly is your location?
18:04We are located in central Iowa in a small town called Ziering, Iowa.
18:08That's where you have a website?
18:09We do. It's jrsoilrustproofing.com.
18:12Awesome, and Joey, everything we see here is what you would need to apply the NHLU oil, correct?
18:17Yeah. Well, there's some choices, different levels here that you could choose,
18:22depending on the volume of vehicles that you're doing.
18:24And now we're going to have Joey go through and explain the equipment,
18:27piece by piece, and what you guys would need and what he recommends.
18:31All right, so we've got a lot of equipment here on the table,
18:33and Joey's going to explain to you exactly what the equipment does and what you need in your application.
18:38The first piece of equipment most people start off with
18:41is a cup gun system. This is a very common one here.
18:45You've got a plastic quart cup that goes on it.
18:47You hook it into your air compressor, usually around 60 psi.
18:51You've got your spray nozzle on the gun, and that is a great gun to get you started.
18:55The problem with that is you can't do every single cavity,
18:59so you could upgrade to a different style cup gun like this, which is a fogging cup gun.
19:04The wands are much smaller. You can fit it into tighter spaces, especially if you're trying to do
19:11inside the door, going through the drain hole. We have pressure pot systems like that one right there.
19:16That is just like the fogger gun, but it's five gallons, so you're not continuously filling up quart cups.
19:22But let's say you go beyond that, and you want to save more time.
19:26You can go to a high-pressure spray system.
19:28No filling. It drops right into a 55-gallon drum.
19:31We have an airless gun that goes on it like this with a 50-foot hose that comes off.
19:36It just sprays straight product, 1,400 pounds of pressure.
19:40And then we have a fogging gun that comes off of it. It's got a dual air regulator,
19:45an air and a product line to go into it. Now, what about the hoses themselves?
19:49They're 50-foot hoses, you know, so this one's just high-pressure hose. Single line,
19:54which is the beautiful thing about this. This hose here, you have to have, unfortunately,
19:58but you have to have two hoses because you have to have one for the air and one for the product.
20:04What about storing your equipment? Let's say you don't have a high volume and you want to store it.
20:08Do you have to clean it out completely or can you just store it?
20:10No, actually, especially with our oil products,
20:12you don't have to do one single bit of cleaning on any of the equipment.
20:17You can sit there for months and months. The oil doesn't dry.
20:19And if you guys want to be a dealer or a franchisee, check out NHOU.
20:23Get with Joe. Get with Joey. And start yourself a new business.
20:26If you have a current business, add on to it. You're going to make money.
20:29You're going to put smiles on people's faces and protect their investment.
20:31Thank you so much, Joey. Appreciate it.
20:38Be sure to check out Sam's Garage on these other media platforms.
20:45Send us questions and feedback to info at samsgaragetv.com.
20:50Today, we saw the Bandit roar back to life, checked out a Mustang's hidden LS power,
20:56and gave the Chevy Street Rod the attention it needed to stay on the road.
21:00Plus, we learned how NHOU dealers protect their vehicles for the long haul.
21:04That's it for this week.
21:06Thanks for watching Sam's Garage, where every project is built to drive.
