Transcript
00:00Everyone else who died in the past stayed dead, not her. Why? Was it the magic cliff? I don't know.
00:04That's some freaking infinity stone scientist.
00:07Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the most controversial moments in the MCU.
00:14We'll be talking spoilers from various MCU shows and movies, so consider this your warning.
00:19Number 20. Butchering the God Butcher. Thor, Love and Thunder.
00:32You went to the gods for help, and they did nothing. They're alike in that sense.
00:39When word broke that the fourth Thor movie would introduce comic book fan favorite Gorr the God Butcher, people were pretty excited.
00:45Unfortunately, once the movie actually came out, people were collectively disappointed.
00:50While Christian Bale certainly tried to bring some drama and gravitas to Gorr, the villain felt tonally at odds with the movie's overall goofy vibe.
00:58It also didn't help that the MCU severely downplayed the God Butcher part of Gorr.
01:03Sure, the movie told us that his God-killing spree was bad, but all we really got was him murdering some deedless deities.
01:10All gods will die.
01:15To make matters worse, many of these deaths happen off-screen too.
01:20So, yeah.
01:21It'd be Gorr who got butchered in the end, sadly.
01:31Number 19. Having Thor Put on Some Pounds. Avengers Endgame.
01:35Oh my god! Oh my god, it's so good to see you!
01:41Thor's been everything from a prince to a warrior to a full-fledged superhero, but he's also been a buffoon.
01:47After the trauma of Infinity War, he became a husk of his former self in Endgame.
01:52In a look reminiscent of the dude from The Big Lebowski, he was an overweight, depressed gamer.
01:57Some defended this appearance, saying he looked more in line with the typical Norse mythology, but the depiction just didn't connect with most fans.
02:03His growth in Infinity War was undone.
02:06Sure, he was sad a bit in Endgame, but that wasn't enough to repair the damage.
02:11You're better off leaving the sneaking to your brother.
02:13I was seeking a scoge for a walk and then...
02:16What are you wearing?
02:17I always wear this. This is one of my favorites.
02:20Thor eventually got back into shape, but his transformation from a thundering god to a lazy couch potato to a jovial himbo was still a major letdown.
02:28Come here.
02:29No, no, no.
02:30I think I'm happy.
02:31I'm happy.
02:31I can talk.
02:32Come here.
02:33Right here.
02:35You think you're the only one who lost people?
02:37What do you think we're doing here?
02:39Number 18.
02:40Loki falls in love with himself?
02:43Loki.
02:43What is this about?
02:45This isn't about you.
02:50Christ.
02:51The first season of this show gave a whole new creepy spin to the concept of self-love.
02:56When Loki discovers a female variant of himself named Sylvie, sparks fly between them.
03:01In fact, the two even share a kiss in the season 1 finale.
03:10Loki experiencing love is cool, but hooking up with himself probably wasn't the right idea.
03:15The whole thing just felt gross, and we're not the only ones thinking that.
03:19A majority of fans were put off by this pairing, and we can't blame them.
03:23Thankfully, it seems like Marvel got the message since the romantic relationship was quietly dropped during the second season.
03:28All in all, the semi-incestuous relationship was a weird chapter in Loki's life that's best to be ignored.
03:34Listen, I haven't got all day. Are you gonna order something?
03:37Well, what?
03:38Give me talk.
03:41My break's in five minutes.
03:44Number 17. Killing Foggy. Daredevil Born Again.
03:47Nostalgia. Reverence for the past, yet hope for the future.
03:51Oh, that is the next level.
03:52Closing argument BS right there.
03:55The cancellation of the original Netflix Daredevil had fans worried that they would never see Matt Murdock and his supporting cast in the MCU ever again.
04:02Thankfully, the launch of the sequel show Born Again showed that there was plenty of life left for the Daredevil property.
04:08However, not all parts of that franchise would be treated fairly.
04:12Within the first few minutes of the Born Again premiere, Foggy was unceremoniously killed off by Bullseye.
04:17I don't know what he's talking about.
04:20He said someone's looking for you.
04:24Foggy!
04:25This felt like a huge middle finger from Marvel to the fans.
04:29Anyone who watched the Netflix show knew just how iconic Foggy was.
04:33Even though an argument could be made that the show needed to have a radical creative change, cutting Foggy Nelson hurt all of us deeply.
04:41You know he gets to breathe the same air that you breathe.
04:44You feel good about that?
04:44He got life!
04:47Number 16.
04:48Wasting Taskmaster.
04:50Various.
04:50How to handle a character like Taskmaster proved to be a surprisingly difficult task for the MCU.
05:05That's because fans were largely displeased with the character's portrayal.
05:08Instead of a comic-accerate Anthony Masters, we got a new character at the helm in Antonia Dracoff.
05:13While this change was frustrating, all could have been forgiven if Antonia was well-written.
05:18Sadly, though, that wasn't the case.
05:20The MCU Taskmaster was basically treated like a footnote.
05:23She was a pretty one-note villain in the Black Widow movie and then killed off haphazardly in Thunderbolts.
05:38Marvel essentially saw Antonia as a glorified jobber and nothing more.
05:42Taskmaster never got their time to shine.
05:45And now, who knows if the character ever will again.
05:47Job or not, can you have some respect, please?
05:50Oh, Jesus.
05:52Let's go along in a second.
05:55Come on.
05:55What do you want me to have it?
05:57I need it.
05:58Number 15.
05:59Everything about Smart Hulk.
06:01Various.
06:01Damn.
06:02Bruce.
06:03Listen to your mom.
06:05She knows better.
06:06About what you were saying.
06:07Right.
06:08The intelligence of Bruce Banner and the raw strength of the Hulk are both important parts of this hero.
06:13However, blending those two fundamentals together is like putting pizza and ice cream together.
06:18They're both amazing foods, but nobody wants Rocky Road as a piece of topping.
06:22So, with that in mind, Smart Hulk was a recipe for disaster.
06:26Turning Hulk into just a green version of regular Bruce vastly reduced its importance.
06:30In fact, Hulk became boring.
06:33Time travel.
06:38What?
06:40I see this as an absolute win.
06:43This is a founding Avenger, and he arguably hasn't done anything important since Endgame.
06:47It's no wonder why fans want to see the Hulk let loose once again.
06:51If we don't get that, then the Incredible Hulk is probably going to get rebranded as the Insignificant Hulk.
06:56This is my son, Scar.
07:00No!
07:01Chris!
07:01I know.
07:02Someone just made that.
07:04Wow, you're a family.
07:06Number 14.
07:07Wanda's Hill Turn.
07:08Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
07:11You break the rules and become a hero.
07:13I do it, and I become the enemy.
07:15That doesn't seem fair.
07:18After losing both Vision and their magical imaginary children, Wanda Maximoff went down a dark path.
07:24How dark?
07:25Well, she ended up on a murder spree in the second Doctor Strange movie that saw her killing members of the Illuminati.
07:30She also nearly killed the magical teenage girl, American Chavez.
07:34So, yeah, it's pretty safe to say that Wanda lost all her marbles.
07:38While some fans had no problem with the Scarlet Witch becoming evil, many criticized it.
07:43It didn't really feel like it was the logical next step for her after the events of WandaVision.
07:47Elizabeth Olsen herself even expressed some frustration with aspects of WandaVision seemingly getting ignored.
07:52He said it was my snot, and he was actually mad at me.
07:58So bizarre.
07:59Either way, though, we can all agree that an evil Scarlet Witch is a scary sight.
08:11Number 13.
08:13She-Hulk Twerking
08:14She-Hulk Attorney at Law
08:16Hi, there's my new favorite client.
08:19Oh, boy.
08:20People did not like this.
08:22At the end of Episode 3 of She-Hulk, Jen and her client Megan Thee Stallion let loose.
08:27This leads to an infamous clip of She-Hulk twerking.
08:29I almost tasted that.
08:30Num, num, num, num, num, eat it up.
08:32Go play, okay, three, two, one.
08:33You know I'm the hottest.
08:34You ain't never gotta heat me up.
08:36The internet had a collective meltdown over this, with many even calling it one of the MCU's lowest points.
08:42In all honesty, that might be a little bit harsh.
08:45Is it kind of cringy?
08:47Sure, that horrendous CGI isn't doing Jen any favors, but this is also just a lighthearted end credit.
08:53The moment got far more backlash than it may have deserved.
08:56Because of that, the discourse around this show remains divisive to this day.
09:00With that in mind, it's unlikely that the MCU will repeat this creative choice going forward.
09:04You are way more fun than my last lawyer.
09:07I will kill for you, Megan Thee Stallion.
09:09Style it back.
09:10Number 12.
09:10Turning Sharon into a Villain
09:12The Falcon and the Winter Soldier
09:14Sharon Carter has had a really rough life in the MCU.
09:25She started out as a resourceful S.H.I.E.L.D. agent who developed a romance with Captain America.
09:29Unfortunately for her, though, Steve Rogers later time traveled to get back together with Sharon's great Aunt Peggy.
09:35Oof.
09:36The mental gymnastics on that thing are a nightmare.
09:39Anyways, the logical next step was to reveal that she was now secretly a bad guy named the Power Broker.
09:50Yeah, that didn't really work.
09:52Her out-of-character turn to the dark side was baffling for viewers.
09:56Was she really the right character to make a crime lord?
09:58What would Steve think of all of this?
10:00Ultimately, the Power Broker was a pretty broken concept.
10:04We're about to have full access to government secrets, prototype weapons, you name it.
10:09Should be something for everyone.
10:11Number 11.
10:11Calling Black Widow a Monster
10:13Avengers Age of Ultron
10:15That I was anything more than the assassin they made me.
10:19There were some real problems with Age of Ultron.
10:22And unfortunately, the romance between Natasha and Bruce had some issues like this scene in particular.
10:26While sharing her backstory with Bruce, Nat explains that as part of the training she had, she's not capable of having children.
10:33After that, she likens the situation to being a monster.
10:36You still think you're the only monster on the team?
10:39This was an extreme statement to make, and not a popular line in the slightest.
10:44Marvel probably had good intentions by trying to showcase Black Widow's pain in an attempt to build sympathy for her.
10:49However, the insensitive monologue just ended up making the whole scene feel disrespectful.
10:55The real monster of this movie is Ultron, not Black Widow.
10:58I really hope this makes us even.
11:03Now go be a hero.
11:06Number 10.
11:07Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch aren't mutants.
11:09Various.
11:10Integrating mutants into the MCU has been tricky.
11:25Many fans wanted to see the X-Men alongside the Avengers.
11:28And when the MCU introduced Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, fans thought that this could be a possibility.
11:34Unfortunately, Wanda and Pietro had a bit of a bumpy start in this shared universe.
11:38Their status as mutants was scrapped, instead being referred to as Miracles.
11:43You know later, they will meet the twins.
11:48It's not the world of spies anymore, not even the world of heroes.
11:53This is the age of miracles, Doctor.
11:57Their family tree was also reimagined.
11:59Typically, Magneto is their father, but that wasn't the case here.
12:03Sure, Marvel couldn't lean into all of the X-Men goods back then.
12:07But ignoring who these characters were didn't make fans happy.
12:10Maybe the real miracle here is how popular Scarlet Witch became, despite all of the changes.
12:15Number 9, the CGI head, Thor Love and Thunder.
12:30Thor?
12:32Can you see me?
12:33A floating head alert.
12:35If you always wanted to see a floating head in a Thor movie, congratulations.
12:40This scene might have thrilled you.
12:41Unfortunately, the effects looks pretty unsettling.
12:45Heimdall's son Axel relays a message to Thor and the gang about gore.
12:49But we're willing to bet all words get lost in translation because audiences could only focus on the horrendous CGI.
12:57A multi-million dollar movie shouldn't look like it belongs in the bargain bin.
13:01No offense to the VFX team, but this just was not it.
13:05There's even a cleaned up version on Disney+, but we're not sure it's much better.
13:09This laughably bad scene was one of several reasons this Thor entry is regarded as a weak point of the franchise.
13:16I need you to focus and hold out your hand.
13:19You're good.
13:20Now focus.
13:21Close your eyes.
13:24Number 8, Howard the Duck and Darcy Lewis have a kid.
13:28What if?
13:28What if a human woman and a duck had a child?
13:38There's a lot of fun stuff in the show, what if?
13:40But we're not sure who was wondering about this specific scenario.
13:44An episode where Darcy Lewis has a child with Howard the Duck is going to ruffle feathers no matter what way you want to slice it.
13:51This exact scenario plays out in the fourth episode of season 3, which sees the birth of Birdie.
14:04It's an absolutely bizarre storyline to do.
14:07And given the limitless premise of the show, a bit of a disappointment.
14:11Out of all the boundary-pushing scenarios they could have done, they go with this.
14:16Seriously, what the duck were they thinking?
14:19Did you do the bottle?
14:22You're supposed to do the bottle.
14:23No, no, no, the bottle's fine.
14:25Howard's way too hot.
14:25You can't give a bottle that hot.
14:27It's the blanket.
14:27It's the color.
14:28Why'd we get her this color?
14:30Number 7, Kang the Conqueror is bested by Ant-Man.
14:33Ant-Man and the Wasp, Quantumania.
14:44This guy was supposed to be the next big bad of the MCU.
14:47That's kind of shocking considering he went out like a complete chump in the fight against Ant-Man.
14:53In Quantumania, Scott and Hope Van Dyne pushed Kang into a multiversal engine core, defeating him.
14:59It's a cool fight sequence, but a huge letdown too.
15:03Fans didn't like the idea that this next level supervillain died that easily.
15:18Even though there were multiple other menacing variants of him running around, this was supposed
15:22to be the main Kang.
15:24If the MCU revisits Kang, he'll still be the guy who was taken down by the dude who talks
15:29to ants.
15:30Sorry, but that's a bummer.
15:32But he also said something bad was coming.
15:35And that everyone would die if he didn't get out.
15:39Wait, so did I just kill everyone?
15:42Is everyone going to die because of me?
15:44Number 6, Rodius the Scroll, Secret Invasion.
15:47The long-awaited Scroll Invasion turned out to be a flop.
16:01But as the miniseries ran, speculation flew over which fan-favorite characters would be
16:05outed as shapeshifters.
16:07Eventually, Rhodey would be revealed as a scroll.
16:10But many fans were displeased at the vague nature of the reveal.
16:13When exactly was Rhodey swapped out?
16:16Had he been a scroll since Endgame?
16:17Did the real Rhodey even know that his friend Tony Stark died?
16:21This plot twist just didn't feel earned.
16:23He and other world officials are being kept in pods beneath the scroll compound.
16:30You nuked that, you nuked them.
16:34Please tell me this isn't true.
16:35Are you listening to this insanity?
16:37Of course it isn't true.
16:38It seemed like the show needed a big reveal and Rhodey squared that circle.
16:41Secret Invasion could have been a thrilling adaptation of an iconic comic storyline.
16:46But instead, we got a dull show that just failed to live up.
16:55Number 5, The Ralph Boner Debacle, WandaVision.
16:59Long lost bro, get to squeeze his stinking sister to death or what?
17:04Did she recast Pietro?
17:06While this show might not have fully jumped the shark, it had its own divisive moments.
17:11The most commotion was caused when the identity of Evan Peters' mystery character was revealed.
17:16Fans initially believed that he might reprise his role as Quicksilver from the Fox Universe.
17:21Could this mean we were going to get the X-Men in the MCU?
17:24Nope.
17:25Sorry.
17:25It turned out that he wasn't Pietro, and it was all a trick.
17:29Peters was actually just playing some guy called Ralph, whose last name sounded like an immature reference.
17:34You're Ralph Boner?
17:40Boner.
17:41Fans didn't love how WandaVision stirred fan speculation and wasted an actor cameo all for a stupid gag.
17:48Hey, don't sweat it, sis.
17:50It's not like your dead husband could die twice.
17:54Number 4, Star-Lord Screws Everything Up, Avengers Infinity War.
17:59I thought you'd be hard to catch.
18:02For the record, this was my plan.
18:04Not so strong now, huh?
18:06It was really hard to be a Star-Lord fan around 2018.
18:10He got a lot of blame for the blip.
18:12When Thanos is cornered by Iron Man's group of heroes, they come incredibly close to prying the Infinity Gauntlet from his grasp.
18:18But when Star-Lord discovers that Thanos killed Gamora, he attacks the Mad Titan.
18:23His rage during this moment allows Thanos to regain control and fight back.
18:28The hell you did that!
18:31Stop!
18:32Stop!
18:33Stop!
18:34It's coming!
18:35It's coming!
18:35I got it!
18:35I got it!
18:36I got it!
18:37I got it!
18:37Many fans became split over this.
18:41Star-Lord's grief was perfectly understandable.
18:44But he also had a job to do.
18:46Some also believe that the way this scene happened was out of character for Quill.
18:50Either way, his reaction cost our heroes everything.
18:54Steady, Quill.
18:55Oh, man.
19:00Number 3, The Real Way Fury Lost His Eye, Captain Marvel.
19:04So is it true that the Kree burned your eye out because you refused to give them the Tesseract?
19:11I will neither confirm nor deny the facts of that story.
19:15How Nick Fury ended up with his signature eye patch was a mystery fans were eager to see solved.
19:21But sometimes theories are more exciting than what we actually end up with.
19:25Near the end of Captain Marvel, a younger Nick Fury playfully holds up Goose, a dangerous alien that resembles a cat.
19:31But it turns out that this kitties got claws.
19:34Goose was actually the one who caused Fury to lose sight in his left eye.
19:39Those bad guys still in there somewhere.
19:41Ow!
19:42Motherf...
19:42This wasn't exactly the satisfying payoff fans wanted.
19:45Captain America, The Winter Soldier made it seem like Fury suffered a dramatic personal betrayal.
19:50And, well, this wasn't that.
19:52Talk about a letdown.
19:53Last time I trusted someone, I lost an eye.
19:57Number 2, Steve Kisses Sharon, Captain America, Civil War.
20:01When I came out of the ice, I thought everyone I had known was gone.
20:07When I found out she was alive, I was just lucky to have her.
20:11On the surface, there's nothing wrong with Captain America sharing a tender moment with Sharon Carter.
20:16But once you realize that she's the great niece of Peggy Carter, Steve's old flame from World War II, things get a little weird.
20:24Some fans didn't see a problem, but many were a little creeped out by Steve's decision to go from one woman in this family to another.
20:31It's also strange because this kiss happened not long after Peggy's funeral.
20:42And in retrospect, it's even odder post-Endgame, where Steve rewrites his history to go back and grow old with Peggy.
20:48The time travel shenanigans there only furthered the idea that the Steve-Sharon romance was doomed from the start.
20:54Plant yourself like a tree.
20:57Look them in the eye and say no.
20:59You move.

21:17Number one, the Mandarin Reveal, Iron Man 3.
21:20You know who I am.
21:22You don't know where I am.
21:25And you'll never see me coming.
21:30The Mandarin had the makings to be a formidable supervillain when he was introduced in Iron Man 3.
21:36He was menacing, mysterious, and murderous.
21:39Except halfway through the movie, we learned that this is all a ruse.
21:42The Mandarin we thought we were seeing was actually just a washed-up actor named Trevor Slattery.
21:47I never thought people had been hurt.
21:50They lied to me.
21:51This is the Mandarin?
21:52I know. It's embarrassing.
21:55Hi, Trevor. Trevor Slattery.
21:56While many in the fanbase have actually come to appreciate Trevor over the years, he didn't get the warmest welcome initially.
22:03Fans disliked how the MCU made one of Iron Man's greatest villains a joke.
22:07While we'd get a version of the real Mandarin eventually, we still never got to see him face off against Tony Stark.
22:13A total fumble.
22:15He gave his figurehead the name of a chicken dish.
22:19And it worked.
22:20America was terrified.
22:23Of an orange.
22:25Are there any polarizing MCU scenes we forgot?
22:28Share those disastrous moments down in the comments below.
22:30And don't forget to like and subscribe for more WatchMojo videos.
22:33You didn't see that coming?
22:34But we're sistema in Western America's newasia Grformed as we've ever got.
22:40Let's get started.
22:41Go for it!
22:45Who do you wanna talk to us for Weihnachten?
22:47Noウoute your birthday would never be.
22:47We'll be kidding me, man.
22:48We're gonna help.
22:49Ah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
22:50Feeling.
22:50That's a situation.
22:51Why are we so excited?
22:55So let's get ready to take this movie.
22:56And so I'm 7-8 or I-8 or I'll be 16-4.
22:57We'll be right back on.
22:59How do you know what?
23:00I don't like that Dom, butLittleOps or something in mypeed.
23:02We'll be looking for things a little bit.
23:03How do we love to?
