00:00Protesters rammed a truck into the gates of a military barracks in Mexico City on Thursday during a demonstration over the disappearance and presumed murder of 43 students, a case that continues to haunt the nation a decade later.
00:30Hooded men reversed the vehicle into the gates before setting it on fire, marking the 11th anniversary of the abductions. The students, training to become teachers, vanished from the southern town of Ayodzinapa in September 2014.
00:49Though no injuries were reported and the barracks remained secure, the attack underscored the deep anger that persists. To this day, only the remains of three of the students have been identified.
01:03The Ayodzinapa case has become a symbol of Mexico's wider missing persons crisis, with more than 1,20,000 people officially reported disappeared.
01:16Investigators believe that the students were intercepted by police and handed over to a drug cartel. But their exact fate remains unclear.
01:26It is important for me because when the events of the
01:35disparate force of the 43, I found myself in the university. And at the university level, it was a shock.
01:42Especially because of the identification of what could happen to anyone. And there was an impunity.
01:47And there was this sector of the army that had participated, but they were denying it. And, well, they are going to
01:54complete 11 years of this. The subject continues to be the same.
01:57A truth commission in 2022 revealed that the army was aware of the abductions as they were happening.
02:05Each year, relatives and fellow students hold protests, demanding justice and tensions frequently flare.
02:12It is another day. It is another day. It is another day more in the way of living ourselves.
02:18Unfortunately, it is 11 years. For us, it is not a special day or a day, no.
02:25For us, it is a simple day that happens and we feel the same as in the other days.
02:32The one that has always been, that we give us the truth and that we give us the truth and that we give us the truth.
02:37Last year, demonstrators rammed a truck into the gates of the government palace during a presidential press conference.
02:53The barracks targeted on Thursday was also stormed by protesters back in 2022.
02:59A grim reminder that the search for answers and for accountability is far from over.
