Pakistan Accepts Issue of Loans Over Loans Adding Loans - PM Shehbaz Sharif

00:21Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen, As-Salaamu Alaikum, and a very good afternoon.

00:26As I speak to you, my country is reeling from intense monsoon rains, cloudbursts, flash floods, mudslides, and devastating urban flooding.

00:41This climate-induced catastrophe has impacted over 5 million lives across 4,100 villages,

00:53over 1,000 precious lives have been lost.

00:58We are facing this calamity at a time when the scars of the 2022 floods that inflicted losses exceeding $30 billion

01:10and displaced millions are still visible across our land,

01:18and Secretary Guterres is a witness to this catastrophe.

01:23Ladies and gentlemen, Pakistan's contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions is almost negligible,

01:35but we bear impacts far beyond our share.

01:41Our commitment to delivering on our climate agenda, however, remains steadfast and unwavering.

01:49In our 2021 nationally determined contribution, Pakistan committed to an unconditional 15% reduction

02:01in projected greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.

02:07As part of the overall target of cutting emissions by 50%,

02:13I am pleased to share that Pakistan has already delivered on its unconditional pledge of a 15% reduction.

02:25Renewables are presently providing over 32% of Pakistan's power mix.

02:31Solar energy has grown seven-fold since 2021.

02:3923,000 hectares of mangroves have been restored.

02:44However, the implementation of Pakistan's national adaptation plan is hampered

02:51and hampered severely due to inadequate international climate finance.

02:58Ladies and gentlemen, I am pleased to announce here that we shall increase the share of renewables

03:09and hydropower to 62% of our energy mix by 2035,

03:18expanding nuclear energy capacity by 1,200 megawatt by 2030,

03:25shifting 30% of transport to cleaner mobility by 2030,

03:33and establishing 3,000 charging stations nationwide,

03:39scaling up climate-smart agriculture,

03:42safeguarding water security,

03:45and advancing the plantation of one billion trees.

03:50And my last line is that loans over loans, adding to loans,

04:19is not the solution.
