00:00I
00:18Hi, I
00:22Know today's gonna be difficult so I won't ask you how you're doing
00:26Just just doesn't see real
00:33Yeah, I know I
00:38Got here early in case
00:40You've needed help with anything before the service. I
00:44Think I think we're good. Michael's here somewhere. He's handing all logistics today. Okay. Yeah, of course. Yes, I'm I'm glad
00:51We have him to lean on
00:53Knowing that Sonny and Carly won't be here today. No
00:58No, Monica blames Sonny for a lot
01:03Taking me away from the family
01:06Just
01:07Took Monica so long to realize that it was my fault
01:12And it was my choice
01:14By keeping my distance from the quarter means I know I caused my mom a lot of me. I
01:19think
01:21What happened in the past
01:23Only made you living at that house for the past year
01:27That much sweeter for your mom
01:31She was beyond happy to have her son back under her roof
01:34For the past year, who's the man who has been looking at her?
01:36What happened in the past year?
01:38I was struggling with something else
01:39For the past year, June and will need a good friend
01:43Oh my God
01:45I am, we're gonna find her
01:46Why do you understand that and he doesn't?
01:47What's the thing?
01:49I can't answer that
01:50For the past year?
01:51why do you understand that and he doesn't and what does that say about my marriage
02:00i can't answer that but i also know it is a lot easier to be brilliant
02:06when it's not your marriage on the block you are a very insightful man
02:13and an irreplaceable friend
02:21that's a great picture of her
02:26but she didn't really take any bad ones did she she didn't believe in them
02:32just another reason i respect that woman
02:37how are you holding up i don't know
02:42i know i have to say goodbye to monica today but
02:46there's some part of me that just
02:50doesn't believe that it's possible i mean none of this
02:54is happening and even when she was sick she still had such a presence in this
02:59house and this family
03:02whether she's physically here or not it doesn't really matter
03:09this will always be monica's house
03:22i'm so glad we're all heading over to the church together
03:26that makes it seem like this day might be uh bearable
03:29yeah it does actually i gotta head over right now i check on something for michael
03:34but i'll see you at the church okay love you love you too
03:40sweetheart are you ready to go i don't know if i'll ever be ready
03:45but i'm gonna stay strong keep it together
03:51for monica you got the letter right here
03:57what are you all standing around for let's go say goodbye to monica
04:05oh good i was just about to call the nurse but maybe you could help me
04:13what's going on you can't possibly be ready for release yet so
04:19why are you out of bed huh much less all dressed up
04:27i'm going to my mother's memorial
04:33jason i am so sorry for your loss
04:38thank you thank you thank you for coming oh of course now speaking as the mayor it's uh
04:50it's impossible to overstate how important a pillar of this community your mother was she was
04:58right at the heart of it all and i respected her more than i can possibly say thank you for saying
05:06that she's also a friend of mine and i'll miss her a lot yeah me too yes i'm sure
05:15i want you to know that my mother was planning on coming today but at the last minute she came
05:19down with a bug and she wasn't able to travel well she's she's okay right oh yes she's okay she'll be
05:24fine you know it's funny i can still remember the day that my mother and monica made peace with each
05:31other but in the end my mother thought of monica as a friend despite all their past differences
05:44thank you for coming
05:47it's the least i can do your grandmother was an extraordinary woman
05:52i'm just glad that i got a little time with her since i got back yeah let's go with that
06:02i'll always be grateful that she let me live at the quarter mains when my dad was married to tracy
06:07and even when monica threatened to throw out my dad and tracy she made sure to tell me that i could
06:14stay yeah that doesn't surprise me yeah my grandma's toughness was how she protected her soft heart
06:22i think that runs in the family
06:33dr quarterman was one of a kind i admire her so much everyone at the hospital did
06:40it's true we were all so honored to walk the halls with her i'm a little surprised that jason of all
06:47people was playing the role of host today yeah you know the family was supposed to be here by now but
06:54looks like he's handling pretty well excuse me
07:01michael i'm so sorry for your loss your grandmother was a remarkable woman thank you and thank you both for
07:09being here it's our honor to be here we should go get us yes
07:20all this small talk must be tortured for you i can take it from here it is but it's okay
07:29i want to thank everyone who's coming today thank them for honoring my mother are you sure
07:36that this is really you know a good idea because from what i was told monica's memorial is um
07:43private service i'm her son yeah the son is still recovering from gunshot wounds and she should
07:50still be in a hospital bed drew nobody humanly expects you to go ahead say it martin the family
07:57doesn't want me there well i don't care about them i don't care about what they think of me i have
08:05every right to be there yeah maybe so but things between you and monica this is not about how how
08:13monica and i ended up okay she's my mother she loved me and she accepted me the second that she
08:20found out that i was alan's son and that meant something to us even with the way things were
08:25lately okay she still she reached out to me what'd you say
08:35i never returned her call i just i i thought that she was calling because of the steps that i'd taken to
08:43to protect scale you mean the restraining orders you taken out of members of her i thought that she
08:49was gonna side with the rest of the family against me and
08:55and i'll never know if i was right i just never i never imagined that it would be the last time i ever
09:00got a chance to talk to her no no how could you i think with everything going on i just um
09:06i lost sight of how important she was to me and i'm always gonna regret that
09:16but i'm not gonna let my anger against the rest of the family stop me from saying goodbye to my mom
09:28thank you thank you both for coming today of course
09:32you know my mom um she always told me how much she liked it when you dropped by
09:39i loved hanging out with monica she was always such a good friend to me
09:44and when maxi had her heart surgery it was monica's hands that gave my daughter new life
09:51she was a brilliant surgeon in fact she was just brilliant period you know used to drive me a little
09:57bit crazy when everybody always talked about the amazing dr monica quartermain but truth be told
10:03i was jealous but you know the truth really be told monica was no saint actually i'm stop it
10:12she was a brilliant doctor and um her family mattered more to her than anything
10:19it's nice that the quarter mains asked you to speak
10:26do you know what you're gonna say i've got a pretty good idea it's actually kind of hard to
10:31narrow it down because monica and i have been through so much together
10:35i've been hearing great things about the wellness group saved my life so i've heard the one here at gh
10:44is almost up and running i'm thinking maybe that's something that i'd like to get involved in well
10:48that's right you're going after your degree trying it's not easy oh but look who i'm talking to the
10:55woman who has a full-time career and a family and battles a life-threatening disease and wins and still
11:02has time to launch a major support group please you are exhausting me and i will take all the help i
11:10can give i think i will just speak from the heart and hope that i can find the words to express what
11:18monica meant to me i hope it's okay that i'm here glad you came i know it probably wasn't an easy decision
11:30i'm not here as a member of the family i'm here for monica she didn't even know we were related and
11:38she welcomed me into her home i wanted to honor her memory i just hope other people don't get the wrong
11:44idea you can't control what other people think i appreciate you being here
12:00monica would have been so touched that you came i didn't know monica long but she couldn't have
12:10been better than me wanted to pay my respects she loved hearing you play she always talked about how
12:16talented you are it's true better go find my seat now yeah yeah i mean you're welcome to sit with us if
12:26you like oh thanks i'm okay i'll see you all in there yeah
12:46well uh i mean he's here right so that's a good thing yeah it's progress
12:50i mean he's here he wanted to honor monica baby steps
13:12i'm sorry we're a little late thank you for welcoming everyone uh actually jason took care of that
13:29that would have made your mother very happy
13:34it's time to get this started
13:47so
13:49i'm
13:53i'm
13:55i'm
13:57i'm
13:58i'm
14:01i'm
14:05i'm
14:07i'm
14:09Drew, I'm not questioning your right to be there.
14:21I'm just wondering if it's what Monica would have wanted.
14:26I know it is.
14:28Just like I know that we would have reconciled if we had more time.
14:35She wouldn't have called me if she'd given up on me.
14:39Look, we loved each other.
14:42She's the only mother I've ever known.
14:49Hi.
14:51I rolled the dice.
14:53I brought some with me.
14:55Awesome.
15:03And I'm not going to let the quarter mains keep me from Monica's celebration of life.
15:09They've already kept me from her actual life.
15:11And I'm certainly not going to let Jason pretend like he's Monica's only son.
15:17You know, you already sound angry and you haven't even left the room.
15:22Yeah, well, I am angry.
15:24Exactly.
15:25And pardon me, but you just got finished saying you didn't want that anger to stand in the way of your ability to mourn for your mother.
15:31So I think you should be honest and ask yourself, you're showing up at that church really about Monica?
15:37Or is it just another way for you to screw with your family?
15:43On behalf of my family, I want to thank you all for coming today.
15:49We're here to honor Monica Bard Quartermain.
15:54Now, I'm sure none of you will be surprised to know that Monica had some very strong opinions about how this memorial should go.
16:03She was very clear that she did not want this to be a sad occasion.
16:09Rather, she wanted us to have a gathering of friends and family to remember her and to celebrate her life.
16:19And I think Monica was right.
16:24As usual, this is a celebration.
16:30Because we were all lucky to have known Monica and to have spent quality time with her, whether it was personally or professionally.
16:42Finally, I cherish the years that I had with Monica.
16:53She was the anchor of our family.
16:56And she was always ready to welcome people into her house.
17:04Oh, come on, Tracy.
17:06Let's not argue.
17:07We're going to be welcoming a new baby into my house.
17:10The house that Alan gave me.
17:13Oh, my God.
17:14Monica, can you let one day go by without...
17:18Why are you laughing?
17:20Because it gets you every time.
17:23I have to be honest with you.
17:26Our house is...
17:29Just feels very empty without her.
17:33And I think we're all a little lost without Monica.
17:37When you stood up for Drew as being part of this family, that's really when you became Isis in my book.
17:47You know, it's not going to be easy for him.
17:49People are tough.
17:50Well, he is.
17:52He's tough.
17:53And so are you, Olivia.
17:54And this place wouldn't really be a home without you being here.
18:04I want you to think of this as your house, Olivia.
18:08It's going to take us some time to figure out how to live our lives without our love and our guidance.
18:20But at least for today, we don't have to do that.
18:26Because Monica has left one final message for all of us.
18:33To my dear friends and family, thank you for being a part of my life.
18:46I have so many beautiful memories of all of you that I hope you do too.
18:53Please share them with each other.
18:56And be happy.
19:01I'm sorry to leave you.
19:03But I've had a wonderful life that I truly loved.
19:09Just as I love all of you.
19:12I've known Monica almost my entire life.
19:26Because my grandmother, Audrey Hardy, considered her to be one of her closest friends.
19:33And they worked together at General Hospital.
19:35And my grandmother, who's not easily impressed, used to tell me that she had the utmost respect for Monica as a doctor.
19:48So when I started working at GH, you can imagine I was pretty intimidated to work with the doctor, Quartermain, chief of staff.
19:59But it turns out I didn't need to be intimidated because Monica was so patient and so willing to teach anyone who was willing to learn, no matter their position.
20:16When she looked at all of us, she saw people.
20:21She didn't see titles.
20:22She saw people.
20:24And that's exactly how she saw her patients too.
20:28You know, they were people that she spent time with and connected with.
20:34And she treated them with honesty and compassion.
20:39And they loved her for it.
20:43And it was the same for all of us, all the staff at GH.
20:49We were her second family and she took care of us.
20:54And she encouraged us every single day to be the best version of ourselves.
21:05And we loved her for that.
21:09She also inspired me to be the best version of myself.
21:15And on the days that I just couldn't, she forgave me.
21:26And I loved her for that.
21:29I wish I'd gotten to know my grandchild.
21:31I know.
21:34It doesn't matter how I know.
21:36I just do.
21:37Dr. Portemain.
21:39Elizabeth, I am a widow.
21:41And I've lost Emily.
21:43I've lost AJ.
21:45Jason is my only surviving child.
21:47Now, you tell me, if you were me, wouldn't you want to know if you had another grandchild?
21:58I was really lucky to be a part of both of Monica's families.
22:03And my son, Jake, was really lucky to be her grandson.
22:13Good morning.
22:15First of all, I have to say that I was truly honored when the Quartermains asked me to speak here this morning.
22:23Like Elizabeth, I, too, knew Monica for most of my life.
22:28As a matter of fact, some of you may know this.
22:31When I was a young teenager, 15 years old, I volunteered at General Hospital as a candy striper.
22:39And that's when I met Monica.
22:45And I was just so impressed with how poised she was, you know?
22:50And then as the years went on, I watched her navigate her way around the Quartermain family.
22:58Something that I think even the Quartermains themselves might say is not such an easy task.
23:06But then again, every family has their own unique way of expressing their love.
23:14And even though Monica married into the Quartermains, she was a Quartermain through and through.
23:22As a matter of fact, another job that I had when I was a young woman was working for Monica's father-in-law,
23:30Edward Quartermain, who was a formidable and intimidating man.
23:35But even at my tender age, I could see how much Edward truly loved and respected Monica.
23:46For your father's sake, I hope that we can all live happy lives from now on.
23:51You do love him as much as I do, don't you?
23:57Yes, I do.
23:59And I know the reason that he is feeling as well as he is.
24:04Because you've taken such good care of him since he's had his heart attack.
24:08You know, I think I could go to like you, little by little.
24:11I know that Monica saw caring for her patients as an act of reverence.
24:37The only people she loved more were her own family.
24:43And I know she loved them very much.
24:45And she treasured what time she had with them.
24:51Sadly, Monica's life also saw an awful lot of loss.
24:56She lost her son, AJ, and her two daughters, Emily and Don.
25:02And then finally, her husband, Alan.
25:05But those losses, along with her battles against breast cancer and alcoholism,
25:14only served to deepen her compassion for others.
25:20This is from Maxie.
25:22She heard you were in the hospital.
25:24She tells everybody you're the person who saved her life.
25:28She knows you're going to be okay because you're a general hospital.
25:31And it's the best hospital in the whole wide world, and it has the best doctors and nurses.
25:36And she's right.
25:37You thank Maxie for me, and I will all write her a note.
25:51Monica's generosity, her philanthropy, are two of the biggest reasons that General Hospital,
26:01and even the city of Port Charles itself, are the amazing places that they are today.
26:07I will miss Monica with all of my heart.
26:14But I know that she lives on in her family
26:18and in her legacy at General Hospital.
26:23What?
26:38Mother, that's your cute.
26:46Are you really not going to say anything about Monica?
26:50I can't.
26:51Tracy has to speak.
26:56If she doesn't, she's going to regret it for the rest of her life.
26:59I agree, but it's not our call to make.
27:03You know what?
27:04Maybe she just needs someone to buy her a little more time.
27:09Lucy?
27:10Lucy?
27:10Lucy?
27:11Lucy.
27:11Lucy.
27:11Lucy.
27:19Good morning, everybody.
27:23I was not asked to speak or scheduled to speak.
27:26um why would i be really you know uh i am not part of monica's family and uh
27:34we weren't really friends per se but over the years we have been called acquaintances rivals
27:41and yes most probably enemies but i happen to have a very unique perspective on monica quarter
27:51me and i think you all should know it
27:56like laura i too shared a passion with monica everyone knows what i shared with monica
28:15the nurses ball as the founder and organizing the ball from the beginning
28:21i worked very very closely with monica she was chief of staff and she was chairman of the board
28:28and i could not have asked for a better partner as a doctor she saw the devastating consequences
28:36of aids and hiv up close firsthand and it was so wonderful to know that monica was as every bit
28:44devoted to that cause as i am and monica performed at many balls which i'm sure you remember she
28:51she was amazing and she was also so amazingly generous with her time and her money and
28:58i i could not ever have done it without her you know i'm gonna really miss having somebody that
29:04cared as much about our very special event like me she cared like i did
29:12and of course we also shared a husband
29:19the dearly departed alan
29:22and i know what you're all thinking i can see it on your faces this is a bit
29:28unorthodox the other woman speaking at the memorial but um monica believed in facing things head on so
29:37that's what i'm doing head on we hated each other i mean through the years because of alan we really
29:46really hated each other i want you to stop seeing my husband because if you don't lucy
29:53i will make sure that the hospital knows exactly what a cheap little tramp they have running the daycares
30:00oh wait a minute monica what you know you really shouldn't make such high-handed threats what's that
30:06old saying they say you know that old adage people who live in glass houses what exactly are you
30:12and boy alan and monica could fight
30:16you know on separate occasions sometimes they would just leave but they always came back because
30:23they were the loves of each other's lives always so i guess what we can learn from alan and monica is
30:33that love doesn't look the same to every couple but true love well we all know it when we see it
30:40you know over the years we did make our peace and um i'm gonna miss her and i'm sorry she's gone
30:50but i'm just so happy to know that she and alan they're back together again
30:58there's no one else gonna speak from our family
31:15um
31:39lucy was right
31:43monica loved alan
31:47uh she loved him so much that
31:50she took me in when i was a baby
31:53she um
31:56she chose to be my mother
31:58and from that moment on
32:01she
32:03she was my mom
32:04no matter how much i try to distance myself no matter how much i try to push her away she
32:10she let me be my own person
32:14and go my own way and she just had
32:17faith
32:20and trust that i would find my way back to her
32:23and eventually i did
32:29jason
32:30no matter what has been said in anger
32:34you are my son
32:38and i love you
32:42i wasted so much time
32:48it took me so long to figure out that monica wasn't trying to make me something i wasn't
32:56it was that she really
32:58just
33:01just loved who i was
33:03you know the same way she um
33:07she loved everybody
33:10in her family unconditionally
33:13she told me once that i i wouldn't
33:17be able to see all
33:19the forms love could take
33:22until i had a child of my own
33:25she was right
33:27it wasn't until i had a
33:31son
33:32that i realized
33:34what i saw
33:37on her face every day
33:39was love
33:45you know sometimes it would come out as laughter sometimes frustration but behind it
33:50there was always love
33:53and it was that kind of love
33:57that made her the best mom
34:01to emily
34:05and aj
34:08and to me
34:09so
34:11speaking for
34:14all her kids
34:16i just i just really want to say thank you
34:22thank you for being here
34:26i don't think i said it enough
34:47but i love you mom
34:53i love you
35:01what are you waiting for
35:22tracer are you sure you don't want it
35:27the family decided you would be the last one to speak
35:30get up there people are waiting
35:32mother
35:33everyone will be happy to wait
35:35if you need a minute to collect your thoughts
35:36i don't
35:37he's the one that's holding things up
35:39okay
35:44hi
35:52i'd uh
35:54i'd like to thank you all
35:55for coming out today
35:57that means a lot to me
35:59and my family
36:00to see you all here
36:01i grew up
36:04hearing stories
36:05about the legendary
36:07dr monica cordomain
36:08you know people
36:10they talked about what a
36:11brilliant surgeon she was
36:13and
36:13how much they respected her
36:15but to me
36:17she was just grandma
36:21it wasn't until later that i found out that
36:26she was this powerful woman
36:28busy saving lives
36:30and while i understood that intellectually
36:34it
36:34it didn't feel that way
36:36she always made time
36:39to sit with me
36:41and ask me about my day
36:42and it didn't matter
36:46if i was
36:47in elementary school
36:49or at an office
36:50at elq
36:51she uh
36:52she made the time
36:54and i had kids of my own
36:57she made time for them too
36:59i consider myself very
37:02very lucky
