05:33Paul Tazewell is the first African-American man to win an Oscar for best costume design.
05:40On top of, like, all his other accolades, because he's been really running these costume design Broadway streets since the 90s.
05:46So, um, you know, just in the presence of an icon, no big deal.
05:50You will be creating an avant-garde look based on the themes of the upcoming movie Wicked for Good.

06:44and elphaba have such a strong sisterhood so like wow this is such a beautiful challenge for antonio
06:49and i wicked focuses on the power of friendship marginalization of people that are different
06:57and also self-empowerment so it's on you hopefully to take that inspiration and create it in your
07:03own way and reimagine the idea of oz and what if i told you you might have not only one day
07:14did it oh my god finally girl i'm about to cry a lot of emotions i got saved paul taswell wicked
07:25avant-garde damn it paul and christian will meet you guys in the work room where there will be some

07:43my designers so fragile so expensive so designer is this for rio so not only did you get a special
07:52look at the film you also get this fabulous special look at the costumes from the film which is
07:56incredible and you're gonna get to talk directly with the man who made it all come to life what you
08:01see before you is elphaba and glinda for elphaba i leaned into all that was organic i was influenced by
08:10mycelia bark the underside of mushrooms speechless with glinda it's all that is artificial all that is
08:19sparkly and beautiful i then wanted to really establish that idea of the iridescent bubble swirls
08:27and those things that are whimsical and pink and green define what the world of wicked is think about
08:33this idea taking the inspiration of wicked for good but still avant-garde and whatever that means to
08:38you and your brand and your work still needs to be fashion it's still a runway push it really hard
08:44you guys go sketch and we'll come around this is my challenge i'm good at avant-garde good luck at
08:54the designers good luck hi i'm glinda obviously i'm thinking about doing a head-to-toe pink beaded
09:03bodysuit with gloves and do a beautiful cape of our gansa amazing well make sure that you're also
09:10thinking about avant-garde like something you've never seen before yeah because like a pink bodysuit
09:15is fabulous but like jennifer lopez literally wears that every single night and a flower cape valentino
09:19has made for like 20 years so push it more i'm not worried at all i hope my win last week can carry
09:26me through this challenge and into the finale my biggest competition is my brother and i feel like
09:31i finally catch up up to him the judges really are gonna see what antonio strata is capable of i wanted to
09:38tap more into the nature side so i thought about a beautiful tree nature has no linear lines absolutely
09:45but remember you know still want that fashion moment i'm trying to use the design style that
09:52i discovered for myself sophisticated street wear and push it to avant-garde the pressure is turned up
10:00to 5 000 and i really really really want to make it to the finale so i'm determined to deliver
10:07wicked for god is a movie about friendship being torn apart and i kind of want to create a fabric
10:13that's kind of like peeling off or being torn apart i really want it to be crazy but in a good way i mean
10:20what i'm seeing is really exciting huge fan of texture also like your work is some you know very quiet
10:26sometimes i think this has to be the fantasy yes right they really agree with kreshad my work
10:31it's very quiet because i think that there is beauty in simplicity but avant-garde should not be
10:40quiet i'd love to play with restraint a lot of alphaba's journey she's restraining herself because of her
10:48skin growing up i was a little queer kid and i didn't know really how to express myself and so when i saw
10:55wicked that did help me like feel comfortable on my own skin and yeah it really means a lot to me
11:01i'm obsessed so i want to play with this beautiful crystal overlay off the shoulders just it's flowing
11:10down to just beautiful fabric you did do the first challenge where you had a glove through your giant
11:18wind cape and that standing still might not be enough this needs to be incredible which you above
11:26all people can do avant-garde is my bread and butter i think that i could do a hybrid of what i've done
11:34before but these decisions are the ones that are going to push me into the finale so i got to make
11:38the right decisions it's a lot of pressure i have a really strong connection with alphaba i want to
11:46create this really amazing avant-garde coat dress with really huge hips i don't know if avant-garde is
11:55in jesus wheelhouse because he makes a lot of beautiful dresses but a beautiful dress is not avant-garde
12:02then i want to mold the collar into around the neck and into a hat i mean the silhouette of the dress is
12:09something that we've seen before it's literally exactly the same i don't know what he's thinking this
12:14challenge might be jesus downfall i got this
12:23and we're back this is probably the most important shop of the season five of you left two of you go
12:28home on this challenge fabric is so important 30 minutes thousand dollars to shop i love money
12:34and i love spending other people's money ready go on your broomsticks
12:44i have been eyeing this crystal fabric and i find this beautiful green satin my ritual plan was in
12:53silver because of glinda's shoes but that crystal fabric is more of a green tone so like green
13:00is just a natural choice vj all this red is for you a lot of your budgets going to this one fabric
13:06setting myself apart from other designers is a strategy that i've used for the entire competition
13:12because you need to have a unique point of view all going to be red yes the whole thing yes very
13:18powerful it's a risk to use red because i know that this is not the usual colors that you can
13:24associate with the movie but no risk no reward can you see your sketch bj no i don't know yet what
13:33i'm making i just want to see what you sketch i don't know yet what i'm making you don't have to

19:27i was gonna do a jumpsuit i kind of had a nightmare that j-lo sent me home so
19:32i changed my mind i'm not doing a cape it's almost like a shawl but i want to make it big and i want to
19:37make my own flowers it's big it has to be huge focus on this wow moment piece you need a flower
19:43cocoon flower cocoon bubble let me write that down how do you spell cocoon cocoon i don't know c c a c o o n
19:59this is uh one of alphaba's friends from the forest tree creature yes this is really cool it was
20:05really hard to find texture and the right color of trees and moss i don't think you should go to
20:12costume-esque like a tree what's going to make you stand out knowing that i could have gone home in
20:19the last challenge is shaking my confidence i'm worried about my look not standing out in the room
20:27full of glitter sparkle and 3d definition i'm concerned who is she lady godiva so you're sticking
20:36with your plan like you're not gonna see the body at all yeah like you're covering her up in green even
20:41if it was just a small amount into a v or something you know i could plunge this down and really get it
20:49close to the body i think so i don't want them to be like this just isn't enough throughout this
20:55competition i have had to tone it down because you know my sentiments for fashion is really loud
21:01and bananas but this challenge is my opportunity to really turn what i'm good at up to a hundred
21:08this is that one challenge you could push it even just a little bit more okay
21:12i don't want it to kind of look like what i did for unconventional you know the gown i want to make
21:19her a little more sexy i think you can do all this i've just met me i know that's a lot of work
21:26i can handle it i need to send her home i guess what did you just say vj just killed the vibe not too
21:31long ago she she's one of those i am sad because there's a lot of assumptions that i am steering the
21:39pot one of the things that i learned in this competition is that you got to be very careful
21:44because people just really create drama out of nothing dj the room is very frazzled about you today
21:51i know i don't know why it just feels so weird because they they thought that i should that i should
21:58got eliminated last challenge i don't know alphaba is a person that kind of like being rejected for who
22:06she is and you know it's like yeah like you know it's like i felt rejection so many times and it's
22:13not that easy it's kind of like i kind of relate to that character as a trans woman being rejected
22:19being said no a lot of times about it's like no matter how hard it is i understand trust me i was an
22:29out little gay boy on when i was on this yeah in 2008 yeah it was rough it wasn't fun yeah but you're
22:35here and there's so many allies in the world and people are gonna be so inspired by you there are
22:40things about me that people don't understand as an immigrant woman as a trans woman and as a fierce
22:48competitor but those are the things that i like about me i see my uniqueness as a special power
22:55and i want to channel all of that into this design you get to create and show people what you can do and
23:02so be proud of yourself
23:14a little trepidatious about them being like it's too similar to the first one but it's a totally
23:24different like headpiece totally different yeah there's not a lot of time to pivot and pivoting
23:31last week hurt a lot but i'm hoping that i kill it one stumble could let me fall out of this competition

24:47thank you tell me about your design so originally when we spoke i wanted to do a catsuit i remember
24:53christian's like oh jaylo's done that i'm like right right right i'm gonna do the most beautiful
24:58evening gown ever made and i'm adding the green heart because it's a special place for my alphabet
25:05which is my twin brother okay we've seen many evening dresses how is this an avant-garde statement
25:15because this poppy flower that's on the floor it's gonna be her flower cocoon kind of like wings
25:23so pushing your silhouette is the direction that i would suggest yeah really make it something we've
25:30never seen before i mean that was fueling almost all of my decisions when i was designing wicked so
25:35how can you take us to that next level this is my interpretation of her hat right so i want the
25:42point to be dramatic like avant-garde and i wanted to do a 3d heart because you know my brother's doing
25:49green and i mixed the pink in it the twins obviously are helping each other but they're not helping each
25:57other editing the look if i'm jesus i will tell antonio right now to get rid of that ugly flower
26:07it represents the love that she will forever in her life have for glenda wonderful it touches my heart
26:14there may be strengths in what you have already but if you focus on that and make that really
26:19beautiful then you really won't need anything else where i'm at in my process is getting the moss
26:24effect full throttle going what i see currently are silhouettes that in and themselves are interesting
26:34it's how do you keep all of it talking to each other talking to each other
26:38i like balanius but it doesn't read avant-garde it reads street wear there's a lot at stake because
26:46two people are gonna go so girl go big push yourself beyond your comfort zone that's what avant-garde is

29:42i love my love she was morphing into the dress and the dress is morphing into the hat it's gorge
29:49stunning my vision has come to life to perfection such an iconic moment oh my large
30:05i've accomplished everything i wanted to accomplish for this look she looks so so elegant
30:12and so avant-garde it's making me feel so proud of myself
30:22i'm happy seeing this green goddess walk down the runway my look does not have sparkle it does
30:29not have that much volume but it's me definitely me and i'm obsessed i am hopeful that it's still
30:35enough to get me to the finale seeing my look walk on the runway i feel the spiral detail is so
30:48beautiful and the movement it's so powerful i mean the color is so dramatic and i'm really
30:56really happy with the outcome of the dress this is all so magical to be able to see my look just fly
31:11down the runway it's sparkling under the light the lines are gorgeous it looks expensive it looks unique
31:18it looks so avant-garde and i think that i did myself so proud today this is going to be so hard

31:39we've scored your designs and we want to talk to all of you jesus we're going to start with you and your
31:44a model i really wanted to just create something very powerful i wanted to do a heart to incorporate
31:53the paint of antonio's fabric because to me it represents the love that elphaba has for glinda
32:00but for me is the love that i have for my twin brother avant-garde means being innovative
32:06being experimental and that all came through it really is pushing the boundaries thank you well
32:17done oh jesus it's okay to be emotional i think it's really really really beautiful
32:26now the shoes came out really draggy to me but you know what this is a runway look this is the
32:33avant-garde moment when you can be outrageous go ahead nina first and she's going to photograph
32:38it no it's going to get me first because i'm going to get it right off the red carpet oh no we're
32:42going to get it oh no no no yes baby we get it i get it first man depends on your celebrity
32:48and we know who my celebrity is all right nina came back feisty tonight yes i know that's what you
32:54say every time i come here whatever jesus i don't see two days i see two months yes i did love the love
33:03it came out and i was like wow the sparkles how you place them all i don't know it just gives it
33:08this kind of texture in a way it's divine thank you so much thank you okay antonio let's get your model
33:16out i knew that i was going to do a pink dress inspired by glinda and what really came to my mind
33:23is the poppy flower in the movie i love the dress i think the dress is beautiful does it read to me
33:30immediately wicked no i'm seeing a little bit more vegas the construction on the actual dress is
33:36really beautiful let's talk about the back because that's what i'm most troubled with
33:41that's a disaster and it is not defying gravity it's bad tell the truth shame the devil it's it's it's
33:50it's a it's like a bad piñata i know that deep inside you know this is catastrophic antonio i know
34:02that deep inside you know this is catastrophic the back of the dress looks really unfinished i see all
34:10your seam works it is a bit messy from the back but i do love the volume this brought me back i feel like
34:17to the beginning so even though i was rising to the top i feel like i'm back to square one so i'm
34:24shutting down um i think the dress is beautiful and i actually like the flower i want it you can
34:34have it tyra thank you antonio hi vj hi hi let's bring out your model wicked for good is about
34:42friendship being torn apart so i bought red silk and i literally shredded it shredded it apart and
34:49paul mentioned that one of the most important design elements for wicked is the spiral the
34:56deconstruction of wrapping that boning and making it look shredded looks fantastic the shoe is spectacular
35:07kind of took my breath away there was a lot of creativity to it i really loved it i think
35:12it's beautiful i think it's avant-garde and then the shoe looks clunky does it read wicked to me
35:18no the red totally threw me off had this been in green or black you could have told the same story
35:25and it would have made more sense for the movie but i do think that you did make something really
35:31interesting i used to teach branding and there are certain things with branding that are non-negotiables
35:37and one of those is color so for me that's like a big miss like a huge miss thank you vj thank you
35:44thank you so much okay ethan let's bring out your model this could have easily been a fifty thousand
35:50dollar couture dress and you ruined it with those underwear that is one of my biggest pet peeves on the
35:57red carpet when it's the wrong underwear but it's fab i love the addition of the ostrich feathers
36:05it also is alphabet with the cape and the end of the first movie when glinda threw that cloak around
36:11her and she flew off i think you did an incredible job it's gorge i mean you definitely took a risk by
36:17hiding her face because it could have been like they either hate it or love it i happen to love it you
36:21know it's like what i like the most about your work is when you play with these opposites right so
36:30here is a sense of modesty but at the same time of sexiness i was just blown away i think it's very
36:37stunning this is unique this is special thank you ethan thank you all so much you can leave the runway
