00:00A key flood defence in Highbridge could be enhanced to reduce the risk of flooding in communities upstream of the town.
00:08The River Brew begins in Brewham near Bruton and flows over the Somerset Levels, separating Glastonbury and Street, before reaching the sea at Highbridge.
00:18The Somerset Rivers Authority has now proposed widening Highbridge-Clyce as part of a wider series of measures designed to reduce flood risk.
00:28In the short term, the focus will be on filling in low spots within the existing riverbanks, which will prevent the river from bursting its banks.
00:39In the medium term, there will be work to improve the flow of water between Westhay and Highbridge, which diverts part of the River Brew into the artificial Hunt Spill River.
00:49In the longer term, possible changes to Clyce Hole, along with improvements to the Glastonbury Millstream and the South Drain, will be assessed.
