New South Wales Deputy Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon will replace outgoing Commissioner Karen Webb. The veteran officer has served thirty-eight years with the police force. He's been head of the crime command and led the state's recovery efforts after devastating floods in 2022. He will step into the role next month after Commissioner Webb's term ends in a week. Reports show Mr Lanyon was aggressive towards a paramedic after an alcohol-fuelled police event in 2021. Mr Lanyon concedes he's previously made mistakes and thanks his predecessor.

00:00This is one of the greatest responsibilities in the public service and I take it on with
00:05humility and a deep sense of duty. I want to thank Premier Minns and Minister Catley
00:12for placing their faith in me. I accept this role knowing how important the mission is
00:18for every New South Wales resident. Can I acknowledge Commissioner Karen Webb on her
00:24distinguished 38 year career in the police force. She leaves a legacy of achievement
00:29as the first woman to lead the New South Wales Police Force and as a Commissioner who delivered
00:34enduring reforms. This decision was not made based on who had the mistake free perfect record.
00:42I want to make it clear that for me it was based on who I believe should be in the Commissioner's
00:47Chair on New South Wales's worst day when the public's in danger and the New South Wales Police
00:53force needs exceptional leadership.
