00:00Support for the coalition has crashed, to a historic low of 27% in news poll,
00:05handing Anthony Albanese a commanding 58% two-party preferred lead,
00:10his biggest margin since taking office.
00:13So how did the coalition end up in such a dire situation?
00:18After a bruising election defeat,
00:20widely seen as a rejection of Peter Dutton's populist Timu Trump pitch,
00:25liberals found themselves on unstable footing with the nationals,
00:28leading to a messy, week-long coalition split at the end of May.
00:33The National Party will sit alone on a principled basis.
00:37The collapse also follows former national Jacinta Numpajimpa Price's sacking from the front bench
00:42after controversial remarks about Indian migrants.
00:46I think Labor like to be able to ensure that they're going to allow those in
00:50that would ultimately support their policies, their views and vote for them.
00:54May I take this opportunity as leader of the Liberal Party to apologise to all Indian Australians
01:01and indeed others who were hurt and distressed by the comments that were made.
01:07Opposition leader Susan Lay's attempt to contain the backlash has instead exposed internal tensions,
01:14with senior figures split on whether to harden their position on migration
01:18and moderates reluctant to walk back the party's net zero stance.
01:23Politics builds big egos, but I tell you, it also gives you some good lessons in humility
01:29and we're learning those lessons now.
01:32But I've got every confidence that we're going to be coming back
01:34and we will take a compelling proposition to the Australian people at the election
01:38and that's the poll that matters.
01:40Adding insult to injury, One Nation appears to have reached the rewards of voters' coalition dissatisfaction,
01:46jumping to 10%, while the Greens rose to 13% and independents to 14%.
01:53Lay has dismissed talk of a challenge to her leadership
01:57and reshuffled her front bench to promote Conservatives Claire Chandler and Simon Kennedy,
02:02as well as reinstating James Patterson into the shadow ministry to shore up support.
02:07Under my leadership, we would reflect modern Australia, respect modern Australia
02:13and represent modern Australia.
02:17Serving in my shadow ministry is a privilege
02:20and it is a requirement to have confidence in the leadership.
