00:00The Prime Minister was asked today if he is confident that a resolution between Australia
00:07and Turkey for the hosting rights of next year's COP31 could be reached this week.
00:13He says that we still don't know.
00:15So what's going on is both Australia and Turkey are hoping to win the hosting rights
00:20to this major climate conference.
00:22Now it draws around 20,000 delegates to the event, which is why it's such a big deal for
00:27countries to host it.
00:29The problem is it needs consensus.
00:32Now, Australia reckons it has support from 23 of 28 countries, but that's still not enough
00:38and Turkey isn't pulling out.
00:40And the default here is if they can't reach a solution, then Germany ends up hosting it.
00:47Now, Australia's bid is a joint one with the Pacific.
00:50It would be to be held in Adelaide and they really want to put a focus on clean energy,
00:56but also how climate change impacts on the Pacific, which we so often hear about from
01:01our neighbouring countries, not only on homes and lives, but on the security of the region as well.
01:06So the Prime Minister speaking in New York says these discussions with Turkey are ongoing.
01:11I've already had discussions with a range of the Pacific leaders who are here as well.
01:16I will be having discussions with President Erdogan as well.
01:22I've had a short discussion with the foreign minister as well,
01:28and my ministers and Turkish ministers are having those discussions constructively.
