00:00Ran, it was a good performance against Pakistan, just wanted to know that the coaches have already
00:14said about this that people need to be flexible apart from the openers and everyone needs
00:19to be flexible about their batting positions. But between being able to do it, doing it and
00:27also being sent over there, do you think Sanju, at that position, you think he's going to
00:35grow into that role as a number five?
00:41Yeah, I think, you know, he's had two outings now, two decent chances and he's still figuring
00:47out how to play that role. I think the wicket also got a little bit tighter in the Pakistan
00:51game. But, you know, certainly with the way Shubman and Abiy are going at the top and you
00:56got your captain batting at three. And the way Tillich's played, we're really looking
01:01for a number five. So we believe Sanju is the best man for that job. And we've got no doubt
01:06that he'll figure out how to play that role in the future.
01:10Ryan, you know, we were initially told that after the Oman game, India wouldn't practice.
01:17That's what we were informed. And then we got to know about an optional practice. Was there
01:22any particular player like Shubman who did wanted something like that? Because for the
01:27two games, he didn't perform. And was there any particular input from the coaches that
01:31you all came? Because the three people who turned up, Abhishek and Shubman actually went
01:35and won that game for India. That's part one. And part two, when you play a high intensity
01:40game like the one against Pakistan, how is it that you guys unwind? Because obviously
01:44the extra political tension and everything was high. We know that. So it's no escaping that.
01:50How does a team unwind and then get ready for another game in two days' time?
01:55Yeah, I'll address those questions separately. I think, you know, Abu Dhabi was not ideal
02:01and it took us a bit there. And I don't think Shubman prepared in the way he wanted to on the
02:07day. So being a professional, he wanted to top up on what he has been doing. So yes, initially
02:13we said no practice. But he felt that he wanted to do something and Abhi wanted to come along
02:18and do something as well. And I think it's more coincidence that those guys had a hit
02:21and performed on the next day. But, you know, we're always trying to facilitate not only
02:26the playing 11, but particularly the guys who aren't playing at the same time being
02:30flexible in allowing them time off. Like you say, it's a high press situation all the
02:34time. And we leave it up to the players at times to choose. Tonight's optional as well.
02:39And I think everyone bar one or two of the bowlers is down there. Look, unwinding, I think
02:48this last week has been heightened in terms of
02:51So guys mainly just there
03:07put a time with themselves and then really
03:11the level of professionalism playing these four games in seven days. It's going to be
03:16a more physical challenge than a mental challenge for these guys.
03:19Yeah. Ryan, I don't know if there's any ideal situation, but you only had the one game where
03:26you batted first, you've been chasing and got all the runs. So you have somebody like a Hardik
03:31or even a Dube or an Aksar who's really not had a hit apart from that one game in Abu Dhabi. So
03:35obviously you do want to win easily, but is there a feeling somewhere that maybe these guys haven't
03:41had enough batting in the lead up to these games?
03:43Yeah, you're spot on. Obviously, we tried in Abu Dhabi to get some guys some time at the wickets.
03:51But, you know, we're trying to manage looking ahead and also managing important competitions
03:56like the Asia Cup. So it's very difficult to think of someone like a Jitesh or a Rinku.
04:00They're unlikely to get a game now given the situation we find ourselves in. But the boys are doing
04:04excellent work at training. And you probably have to look at bilateral series more realistically
04:09as a chance to get guys in to show what they can do and also to give guys a chance to show
04:14how flexible they are with their positions. But, you know, certainly now with the format
04:18of this competition, four games, you know, two wins doesn't even guarantee you're going
04:22through. So there's it's not like you can take your foot off the pedal at any time. And
04:26that's been an unfortunate consequence of what we're trying to achieve by trying guys
04:31in different positions. Ryan, India is obviously the number one T20 side in the world and playing
04:37super play also in this tournament. What kind of mindset do you carry out when you play against
04:42a team like Banadish, who is highly motivated now, although they are not in that level in
04:47skill-wise, but they are highly motivated to do well in a tournament? What kind of mindset
04:51do you play against Banadish?
04:54Our general principle is respect everyone, fear no one. And it's more about our process
05:01and what we're trying to achieve. And, you know, the folks will be putting our best game
05:05out again. We actually thought we were a bit scrappy against Pakistan. We weren't happy
05:09with their performance. We just had a team meeting now. And as we always do, we try and
05:13address the things we feel we can be better at and more clinical at. So regardless whether
05:18it's Bangladesh or Oman, whoever we're facing, the guys tomorrow will be trying to put their
05:23best foot forward and give their best performance. And, you know, we respect Bangladesh. I think
05:28they're a side on the rise. They've kind of adapted their cricket as well to the new style
05:33of T20. Some nice attacking players up front. We're looking forward to the challenge tomorrow.
05:38Ryan here. All of us know that all the cricketers can't have the best day on the field. So how
05:47coaching staff handles with players when they have an off day?
05:53That's a great question. I think, you know, the ambition is always to win and to be faultless.
05:57But the expectation is more around the effort you put in. And this unit is very good at concentrating
06:02on that. The only expectation is that you show up and you give absolutely everything for the
06:06team every time. We're not concerned with drop catches. We'll go back and look at, you know,
06:11what we can do better. But again, the process and not that we excuse it, but we accept it
06:18as part of the game. And like I said, the expectation is that they put in 100% effort all the time.
06:22And I can't think of one moment with this team where they haven't done that.
06:26And hi, just going back to the India versus Pakistan game. It's a team and management that's
06:32been talking about the spirit of the game since the first game versus India happened.
06:36But then there is Haris Rauf who's been who made provocative gestures. Don't you find it
06:41hypocritical? At one stage, they're talking about, you know, preaching sportsman spirit. But then on
06:46the other hand, you have a player who's making those provocative gestures. What do you make of that?
06:52Yeah, look, let me first say, you know, the amount of pressure that's been heaped on the players
06:57because of the situation. You know, it's very difficult to control your behavior. I did see
07:04some of the things Haris did. And, you know, that's not our concern. Like I said earlier,
07:08we're really proud of how the guys carry themselves. You know, they fought fire with their bats
07:12on the field. And, you know, other teams, I'm sure they have issues with some of the things we've done.
07:18But from our side, we delighted with how our guys have carried themselves in the tournament.
07:24Coach, can you explain the mindset of Abhishek Sharma that, you know, he has come across a
07:30player who instills that fear factor in the opposition's mind. So when he trains, when he's
07:36in the hotel, when he's talking to the coaches in the team meetings, what is the mindset of
07:40Abhishek Sharma that makes him so different?
07:42I think fearless is the right word there. But don't forget that's backed up with an
07:48incredible amount of skill, you know, the tools to do it. And he has both. And, you
07:54know, the message from the leadership group, from Syria and the coaches, just keep that.
08:00And again, the expectation is that he just keeps and sticks to his processes. And he's
08:04not going to be successful all the time. It's impossible playing the type of cricket he
08:08plays. But we want him to keep playing that way and keep practicing that way. And if ever
08:13you've seen him practice, you know, he goes at 100%. So yeah, he's a pretty relaxed guy.
08:19He doesn't say a heck of a lot. But he loves batting and he loves swinging his bat. And that
08:24fits in well with what we're trying to do.
08:27Ryan, the game against Pakistan, the Pakistani opener was batting very aggressively. And then
08:33the celebration, we all know. What did the team have had when they saw that kind of celebration?
08:38And do you think they got carried away with the start?
08:44Look, they had a very good start. I don't think they got carried away with it. I think
08:48we managed to pull it back really well after 10 overs. And again, I'll say, given the situation,
08:55you can see why guys are behaving and, you know, what they're trying to portray. But we
08:59were very focused on how we wanted to behave. And I think we stuck to the cricket really
09:04well. It would have been easy to lose our minds at that point, you know, given the celebration
09:08as well. And some of the words during the game from the Pakistan bowling unit. But I thought
09:13the guys stuck really well to the task of getting the job done and winning the game. And like
09:17I said, not at our very best. So lots of things to work on. But still managing to win
09:22rather comfortably is very pleasing for us.
09:27Hi, Coach. Given the format, guys are playing back to back matches. There's hardly any time.
09:34Yesterday was a one off day off. The question is on just speed, Bumbra. Will we see Bumbra
09:39getting a rest in one of the Super Four matches? Because since his workload management is always
09:45something we highly spoken about against Bangladesh and he has not, he's not traveled with the team
09:51as of now for today also. He's opted out. That's an optional training practice. But we'll see
09:55Bumbra get one of these two matches.
10:01Look, there's obviously a game tonight and our game tomorrow night. And we'll have a better
10:06understanding of how the table sits. But it's very unlikely that you go into the last game
10:10knowing you've qualified. So I'd say unlikely that he'll get a rest. And also bearing in
10:15mind, we have a test match starting on Thursday. So this is actually quite good preparation in
10:21terms of workload management. You know, he's probably in a bowl. If he plays all the games,
10:25he'll bowl in the region of 25, 26 overs with the training and the preparation going into the
10:31games, which is a fairly good number the week before a test. So, you know, if we have the luxury
10:37to have that option in the last game, we can look at it. But I'd say we're going to, you know,
10:43pick our best team for every game. And he obviously fits into that picture. And he's doing a very
10:48tough task. You don't see many bowlers in this format, bowling all three overs in the power play.
10:54So it's quite strenuous as well. But we feel it's the right amount of work going into the test match
10:59and obviously the importance of this competition as well.
11:02Coach, Mustafiz is playing IPL regular basis and he's in good form.
11:08How do you and do you think the India-Bangadish match in this Dubai pitch, he will be X-factor?
11:15Sorry, how do I rate his what?
11:18How do you evaluate his performance?
11:21Performance? Okay. Yeah, he's a champion. He's been around a long time. A very skillful bowler.
11:26We obviously know the skill sets that he brings. And I think for someone to do so well internationally
11:32over such a long time and obviously goes to the IPL and does very well as well when he goes there.
11:38Like I said earlier, you know, we respect all our position.
11:41There are many good players in the Bangladesh side.
11:44And Mustafiz is probably their premium bowler. So yeah, we rate him highly.
11:48Ryan, just a follow-up on Jaspreet Bumrah. He's played three games and had a different role in this tournament
11:56in the sense that he's bowled three in the power play.
12:00As a coaching group, when you debrief, where do you assess how he's gone so far in the tournament?
12:06He's gone very well. It wasn't his most polished performance against Pakistan the other night.
12:11But we also understand that he's doing an exceptionally tough job to bowl.
12:16You know, the three, the first three overs with two out and the last over of the innings
12:20or the second last over where guys are going as well.
12:23Again, you know, sort of evaluating the performance, it's easy to look at 0-45 on the night.
12:30But we're still happy with that performance.
12:32And there's going to be days where he doesn't get wickets and he's going to go for runs.
12:35But in terms of how we set up the team, you know, obviously with two seamers and going spin heavy,
12:41we feel at the moment that's the best job.
12:43And we can be flexible around that strategy, but certainly try to close off the power play.
12:48The other night when Pakistan were going well, he was the right option.
12:51And, you know, he's a top, top performer, as good as you get.
12:56And he'll have better nights than the other night, but I'm very happy with him.
13:00Thank you, Ryan and Arlen.
