00:00Jefferson is my hometown.
00:29I love it.
00:33You know, we're not the crime capital of the world.
00:35We don't have many murders.
00:38It's a place where people still leave their cars open and their front doors open.
00:45This violent act was so out of character, unbelievable to happen, you know, nice small community where nothing really happens.
00:59A murder scene is like a jigsaw puzzle.
01:07You're trying to put all the pieces together.
01:11You have a woman who's been murdered in the basement.
01:15The victim was stabbed multiple times about the upper torso and the face.
01:20Her head was bashed in, which caused her eyeball to explode out of the socket.
01:23And just the saturation of the blood was evidence that it was violent, very violent murder.
01:35And Tommy's the only one not in the home.
01:37It was imperative to try to find him.
01:41It was full hands on deck.
01:43Canine units, crime scene units, full detective bureaus.
01:46You got patrol cars running on through the neighborhoods.
01:49Nothing.
01:49It was just go where the dog's trying to lead you and see if you can find anything.
01:53And of course we didn't.
01:54We went on down to the condominiums that were being built and cleared those.
02:01And by then it was getting close to daylight and we realized that we're probably not going to find him at this point.
02:06The decision was made that we're going to hold off on the search and wait until the day shift comes in.
02:16Wake up in the morning and that's the first time where the adults start being dodgy with what's going on.
02:24What happened in White Rock?
02:26Well, we're not really sure.
02:28Is everyone okay?
02:28Well, we don't know.
02:30Then the phone starts ringing with my friends and they're like, Mrs. Sullivan was murdered.
02:37We're like, what?
02:39There was a murder?
02:41Like an actual murder in Jefferson.
02:42We're like, who did it?
02:43And at this point, we still don't know, but Tommy's missing.
02:47So the first bit of rumor mill that was going on was that there's a murderer loose in town and he kidnapped Tommy.
03:00So we're all like, holy shit.
03:03There was a murderer that kidnapped a kid and what the hell is he doing to him?
03:07I'd seen movies where kids were abducted.
03:11In America's Most Wanted, that was very recent still.
03:16Post-John Walsh, whose six-year-old son Adam was brutally murdered, leads this crusade against crime.
03:21I was terrified.
03:24It was snowing like hell the night before.
03:26We all wanted to go out and go sleigh riding.
03:28We couldn't.
03:28We wanted to have snowball fights.
03:29We couldn't.
03:30No one could leave the house.
03:59Panic.
04:00It's not just a reaction.
04:01It's a state of mind.
04:03An instinct.
04:05When something horrific happens, we scramble for answers.
04:09We start looking for someone or something to blame.
04:14Panic can distort everything.
04:17It spreads faster than facts.
04:19And soon, it's not about truth anymore.
04:23It's about the fear that consumes us all.
04:30Tommy was known as a reverend brown kid.
04:37Everyone knew him from church.
04:40He was an altar boy, which was also an elevated position there.
04:44And he was an all-area, 106-pound wrestler.
04:49New Jersey's a wrestling state that's like a more popular sport than football.
04:54So the wrestlers were, in a way, kind of, the good ones were kind of revered, because everyone knew the discipline that it took to really excel at that sport.
05:03I was principal of Reverend George A. Brown Memorial School.
05:10Tom Jr. was in the school from first grade on.
05:14He was very handsome.
05:19I remember him as being blonde, but I saw a picture of him, and he had darker hair than I remembered.
05:26But he had the most beautiful blue eyes.
05:29He was a good student.
05:32He basically made no ripples.
05:36It was Sunday morning, I received a call from the convent that said that they could not find Tom.
05:51I felt shock.
05:55Basically, unbelief.
06:00And then, when they didn't know where Tom was, I had so many concerns about that.
06:08Like, where would he be?
06:19The following morning, I had received a call from the dispatcher saying one of our police officers lives in White Rock, was speaking on the phone to a woman.
06:27And she just happened to be talking to her, you know, asking about what was going on.
06:32And as she was talking to her, she looked at her back window and saw a body.
06:39Oh, my God.
06:41Blood on the ground.
06:42At first, they weren't too sure if he was still alive.
06:45And then the woman clarified, he's dead, he's dead.
06:49It was Tommy Sullivan.
06:50It was a couple houses across the street and over from the Sullivan house.
06:57The backyard was fenced in.
06:59There was a shed to the left of the body.
07:03The snow was so deep at the time that the body kind of sat below the snow.
07:09I got a call and said they had found Tommy and to come back down.
07:21His wrists were cut all the way down to pretty much through to the bones.
07:45His throat had been cut from one side all the way to the other.
07:55You could actually look down into his windpipe, cut it all the way across.
08:04And the medical examiner was pointing out the blood splatter or spurting blood on a wooden fence.
08:10And there was some discussion about how this could have happened.
08:17As brutally, as brutal as his mother had been murdered, this was equally as brutal.
08:28His throat was cut ear to ear and his head was hanging back.
08:33You know, esophagus, everything was visible.
08:36So this was shocking.
08:37And the thought was that this was a suicide.
08:44Just the nature of the violence, the nature of the wounds, people have a hard time relating that to a 14-year-old boy.
08:58White Rock has a pretty tight-knit community.
09:00You had people who had been there for a long time, born there.
09:10Everybody kind of knew each other.
09:13The police, if we had found Tommy, you can kind of keep that under wraps to some degree to finish out your investigation.
09:20But the fact that Tommy was found by a neighbor, that's not going to stay too secret too long.
09:29My brother got the first call.
09:33They found Tommy.
09:34He's dead.
09:36My mom screams.
09:38He starts crying.
09:39I went, where did they find him?
09:42Like, the neighbor's backyard.
09:44Like, across the street?
09:46What are you talking about?
09:48We've got to find out more.
09:49So then I start trying to call.
09:50And I think I actually broke the news to a couple of my friends, okay?
09:53And then they didn't believe me.
09:54And then they tell their mom.
09:55So everybody's trying to get confirmation of the story.
10:00We started finding everything out.
10:07That Betty Ann was dead and that Tommy was dead.
10:11You're trying to process that as, like, a 13-year-old boy.
10:14You know, oh, my God, how could this happen type of thing.
10:17So it was scary.
10:17And it just leaves you really, like, unsettled and really uneasy.
10:25I was there at Tommy's scene when they located a Boy Scout knife that they found with his body.
10:34It was a typical camping knife, maybe four or five inches long.
10:41It can be super sharp.
10:43You spend enough time sharpening, I guess.
10:46It would have to be pretty sharp to do the damage that it did.
10:52You know, how you could do that, I mean, after you've already sliced your wrists.
10:55You know, how you could stick the knife in your throat and slice it all the way across.
11:00It certainly didn't make sense.
11:01They still had to do the medical examiner's report on Mrs. Sullivan's body.
11:10You know, because at this point, they didn't know if that was the same knife that killed the mother.
11:16When his body was found, the ID unit, everybody was still there.
11:19So it was easy for them to photograph everything and collect the remaining evidence.
11:24There was only one set of footprints and they were Tommy's that led to where he was, where he was found.
11:30It isolated him as the only person.
11:34It wasn't like there was a struggle.
11:37It was more a validation of, this is Tommy, and this is what Tommy did to Tommy.
11:45So it was just his prints that went from the road up to that yard.
11:51So it appears as if after he crashed the car, that the car stuck, that he immediately went to that back yard.
12:01The family car was across the street from the house.
12:07It had a sloped driveway, so it appeared that it had rolled down across the street into a snowbank.
12:13And it was stuck there.
12:16And that's when they found some of Tommy's belongings in the car.
12:27And that's where they found the contract.
12:32The contract that Tommy had written to the greatest demons of hell.
12:39To the greatest demons of hell, I, Tom Sullivan, would like to make a solemn exchange with you.
12:49If you give me the most extreme of all magical powers, I will use them wisely to tempt as many people as possible to do evil and follow you.
13:00I will kill many Christian followers who are serious in their beliefs.
13:03Although I will not kill my family until I live for 10 years from this very day, this will be done to avoid any neighbors from becoming suspicious, not out of love for them.
13:16Throughout my new life, I promise to perform any Satanistic ritual except homosexual acts.
13:22I will do these to prove my loyalty to the demons of hell.
13:28Exactly 20 years from this day, I promise to commit suicide.
13:32At this time, I will go directly to hell to work with you as a demon.
13:37I will tempt all teenagers on earth to have sex, have incest, do drugs, and worship you.
13:43I believe that evil will once again rise and conquer the love of God.
13:52If this pact is to your approval, sign below.
13:59The part in the contract about killing his family has an X through it, and then in parentheses he has next to that, I have already killed my family.
14:06You know, the contract, well, it was obviously taken aback by it, especially when he, you know, said he'd already killed his family.
14:17Because he thought once he torched the place, once he lit those papers, that the house was going to burn down and he was going to kill his father and brother.
14:23The contract, for a lot of people, that was a pretty telling piece of evidence that kind of linked this behavior, this murder-suicide into the realm of the occult.
14:46Once the word got out that this could have had its roots in some type of satanic belief system, there was media on scene.
14:58A mother and son from New Jersey are dead tonight following a devastating murder and suicide with shades of the occult.
15:05He reportedly went into a rage, stabbed his mother to death.
15:08They ran into the living room where he said a pile of papers on fire.
15:12Then ran to a neighbor's yard where he slit his own throat.
15:15Books on satanism were found in the fire that was burning in the living room of the Sullivan home.
15:20A major crime happens in your community and, of course, the media comes out and they go around and start speaking to all the neighbors.
15:26All we've heard is that Tommy killed his mother and then tried to kill himself and died in the woods.
15:32I think there's something like that can happen right next door or across the street.
15:36In the late 80s, I was a freelance journalist, and I wrote primarily for the women's magazines.
15:48I was assigned the article because I lived in New Jersey at the time.
15:54I was told there's a story out of this suburban town in New Jersey of this young teenage boy who brutally killed his mom.
16:07And we want you to find out what happened.
16:10How did this typical American boy take a dumbbell and smash his mom in the head and literally try to cut her face off?
16:25It's horrifying, it's scary, it's fascinating, it's mysterious, it's insane.
16:36So I was going to dig as deeply as I could.
16:42If you asked me anything about this yesterday morning, I would have said, great kid, wrestler, baseball player, good student.
16:49He wasn't some horrible kid who had tons of trouble, that the schools kept coming to the parents and saying,
16:56do you have to do something with this child, or the parents kept punishing him.
17:00That wasn't what this kid was about.
17:04And that's why it was so fascinating, because there was no easy answer here.
17:10And we want answers.
17:1314-year-old Tommy was an 8th grader at Reverend George A. Brown Memorial School in Sparta.
17:19There's deep concern for the Sullivan family, but there's also concern for the children in the school and how they will deal with the tragedy.
17:26The media was everywhere in the town, and we wanted to protect our children, number one.
17:32We had psychologists, psychiatrists, counselors.
17:40The children were doing a lot of processing, and they did not need to be assaulted by media.
17:45So we said to them, there will be people around, get on your bus, and do not speak to the media.
17:57The students at Thomas Sullivan's Parochial School in Morris County, New Jersey got some counseling today.
18:01And then when I was looking at the news,
18:03there was no cult group here at the school.
18:05And I saw this 8th grader.
18:07He changed, he was more quiet, and he kept things to himself.
18:10I was like, no!
18:12Did you know anything about his, um, satanic obsessions?
18:16Um, it was quiet.
18:18The past, the past week, uh, maybe the last couple days he said something about it, but no one would believe him.
18:28Some people suspected that because he was toying with Satanism,
18:34this is what led him to do this.
18:39I understand there may have been some satanic, uh, indications in that letter as well.
18:44That's true, that's correct.
18:44Murder stories are fascinating in and of themselves, right?
18:49And now it's this young boy murdering his mother, supposedly in the name of Satan.
18:57Well, now you've got yourself a home run.
18:59There are unanswered questions about Satanism in America, unsolved incidents of torture and murder.
19:06In every state in the nation, authorities are investigating some form of what they call satanic activity.
19:12The Tommy Sullivan story played perfectly into a cultural phobia that was running rampant in suburban America at the time.
19:20Fears that young adults were being seduced by darker, more violent things.
19:25We know it as satanic panic.
19:27Fantastical games like Dungeons and Dragons with their demonic covers and Blood Magic Conjuring.
19:34Dr. Thomas Rebecky says there are 28 deaths related to Dungeons and Dragons in the last five years.
19:41Hyper-violent movies dripping with gore and death.
19:45And angry, thrashing heavy metal music.
19:48Heavy metal.
19:49Some would say it's the selling of psychism.
19:52Parents feared that their innocent children were running away from their idyllic lives towards a darkness that they couldn't understand.
20:01You see the pentagram on the wall.
20:02It's being wrote across the 666.
20:04Representing Satan with the horns.
20:06We don't want people to think that we're being overreactive.
20:09But truly, is satanic involvement?
20:11Is satanic criminal behavior?
20:13Is it happening?
20:14And to what degree?
20:15And Tommy Sullivan Jr., he was the perfect example of it all.
20:21In a statement to police, Tommy's younger brother Brian stated,
20:26Tom had been acting strange for the last two to three weeks.
20:29Had been interested in witchcraft.
20:31And had several books about it in his room.
20:34Listened to heavy metal music.
20:37Believed there was messages from the devil.
20:39Officer Hart believes heavy metal encouraged Tommy Sullivan to butcher himself and his mother.
20:49Within literally weeks of his death and his mother's death,
20:53Tommy had been listening to music by some heavy metal artists.
20:57Sullivan's father says heavy metal music was to blame.
21:01There was one by Ozzy Osbourne.
21:02It was suicide or something to a suicide.
21:04Another one he was actually singing to one time about killing his mother.
21:14It's no big secret that our interests label us.
21:18I mean, look at me.
21:19When I was a kid, I loved horror movies and the macabre.
21:22I was into Iron Maiden and weird shit that you could buy from Spencer Gifts.
21:27My bar mitzvah had a bloody cake and a magician that sawed me in half.
21:32It was over the top and innocent fun.
21:34A rebellious escape from the humdrum of school and life.
21:38But back then, it wasn't so cute to everyone else.
21:42One satanic panic washed over my town.
21:45My parents got calls from the school saying that no one would let their kids sleep over in my house.
21:50Perhaps the most dangerous kind of devil worship.
21:52They were afraid I was going to infect them with darker interests.
21:57I turned out fine.
21:58But for kids like Tommy, it didn't end well.
22:01There may have been something about all that dark imagery that awakened something that festered inside him.
22:08And it became a real nightmare that needed to come out.
22:11The Sullivan case not just got national attention, it got international attention.
22:21We had them all here.
22:22I mean, this went on for a good couple of weeks.
22:26And Geraldo at the time came to White Rock.
22:29Whether a Satan exists is a matter of belief.
22:32But we are certain that Satanism exists.
22:35My member, Detective Hart, doing interviews.
22:38Detective Paul Hart thought he had seen everything.
22:41He wanted to go to the house.
22:43He was like, well, I don't know.
22:45He just bounded up onto the porch, knocked on the door and said,
22:49Hi, I'm Geraldo.
22:51Can we come in?
22:53Doors opened up.
22:55We went down and filmed in the basement.
22:58As we came down here, we found Mr. Sullivan laying on the floor just about in this area here.
23:03I mean, he was doing the show and it was to identifying that the problem was actually one of,
23:10I think, the first case that he profiled in any depth.
23:15Do you think, you're not a theologian, a theologian, you're a cop.
23:18Do you think that Tommy was possessed?
23:22I think that possession is a state of mind.
23:25As far as the media, I understand their position is to, you know, report the news.
23:30And I think it was more for the sensationalists.
23:32I mean, the case itself was sensational enough.
23:34I remember some of the media reports.
23:36Everybody's trying to figure out, like, what happened?
23:38How did this go so bad?
23:40The town was pretty freaked out.
23:42Obviously, it's a small town.
23:44You want to know, A, what happened, and B, is it going to happen to me?
23:52There might have been a little intentional mythologizing, a little bit, to be honest,
23:56especially when the satanic stuff broke.
23:58You know, then it's like, all right, if we're talking about that,
24:01we can say basically whatever the hell we want, you know?
24:04And so people were adding their own opinions to it.
24:06One of the rumors was that he attended a satanic black mass, and then everybody panicked.
24:15First of all, does this satanic cult in the woods exist?
24:18Is that real?
24:19If it does, how does that happen under our noses, right?
24:25How does, how, who's involved in it?
24:27People thought he was drinking people's blood.
24:30He would go, like, sneak out of the house at night.
24:33This little boy apparently goes into the woods and sets fires.
24:36Someone said that, that he took a hatchet, he put it under his chin,
24:42and jammed it up, and then ripped it out to the side.
24:45That's how everybody said he did it.
24:47We didn't know about the Boy Scout night.
24:48That became fact.
24:50The rumors were pretty strong.
24:51It's kind of like in school where you'd play the game,
24:53whisper something in one person's ear.
24:54By the time it gets all the way around the room, it's completely different.
24:58There was, it was snowballing, but we couldn't comment on it at the time.
25:01You know, it was still considered an act of investigation.
25:101988, I was pastor of Grace Church in Jefferson, New Jersey.
25:16The Sullivan family went to St. Thomas Roman Catholic Church,
25:20which was a cross from my church.
25:24It was the beginning of winter, January, right after the holidays.
25:28And you could feel not just the coldness of the snow, so to speak,
25:35but that this town will be changed forever.
25:40Betty Sullivan had been killed.
25:43And all of a sudden, we lost our innocence.
25:46We prayed for the family.
25:48We prayed for Tom.
25:50We prayed for Betty Ann.
25:52We prayed for the family that was left.
25:55Um, we prayed for ourselves.
26:03I remember we went to church,
26:05and it was just all everybody wanted to talk about.
26:09Such a small town was such a tragic event.
26:13I realized
26:14I was
26:17the last person to see him alive.
26:21It was just a little overwhelming,
26:23because I knew it was much bigger,
26:25much bigger than me at that moment, that's for sure.
26:28And the family was going through
26:29trauma
26:30and devastation,
26:32and
26:33for some reason,
26:34I wasn't there with them
26:36at that time.
26:37And hearing how brutal
26:39Mrs. Sullivan
26:41passed
26:42made me think
26:43something evil
26:45was involved.
26:48At that point,
26:50the goal was to
26:51work on
26:52just continuing the ministry,
26:54bringing healing
26:55and
26:55bringing understanding.
26:58It's Thursday night.
26:59People are tired.
27:00But questions about
27:01what happened to
27:02Tommy Sullivan,
27:03fears that it could happen
27:04to somebody else's child,
27:06brought parents
27:07out of their houses
27:08this evening.
27:09This freaked out
27:10the community.
27:11We had an assembly
27:12at our high school,
27:14and it was
27:15standing room only.
27:16We had to have a second assembly
27:17because people couldn't get in.
27:20500 people
27:21packed this auditorium
27:22to learn about Satanism.
27:23I'm really scared
27:25about the future
27:26for the kids.
27:27It makes you wonder,
27:28you know,
27:29if it can't happen
27:29to your child.
27:31The town's reaction to it,
27:33they're treating him
27:34like he was infected
27:35with something.
27:36You know,
27:36did he infect my children?
27:37What are they going to do?
27:38We parents worry,
27:39you know,
27:40it's in our DNA.
27:41I mean,
27:42what's more important
27:43than your child?
27:44Is this something
27:44that my kid
27:46is going to get into trouble?
27:47Is this something
27:47that I have to worry about?
27:50Something had to have
27:52caused this.
27:53Because to say,
27:55oh,
27:55we don't know,
27:57that's too hard.
27:58So we've got to come up
27:59with a reason.
28:00And the reason here
28:01was Satan.
28:03Satanism?
28:04That's outside of the home
28:06and that's some other thing
28:08that's sort of penetrated here.
28:10And if I don't let it in,
28:12I'm safe.
28:17People wanted to understand.
28:19Like,
28:19parents would come
28:20and talk to me.
28:20How do we protect our kids
28:21from different groups?
28:23And being someone
28:24who studies theology
28:25and knowing history,
28:26also having
28:27a very good understanding
28:29of what we would refer to
28:31as spiritual warfare,
28:32I understood
28:34how high the stakes would be.
28:37The ramifications
28:38were going to be great
28:39in the community
28:40and in the church
28:41and in my life.
28:43There is a Satan.
28:45There is evil.
28:46There are negative forces.
28:48We must be aware
28:49that it is real.
28:52It is absolutely real.
28:54Yes, there is evil.
28:58But your religion
29:00helps you to deal with that.
29:03And it was a challenge
29:04for every single person
29:06in that school.
29:07We definitely had to face
29:10the reality
29:12that evil can seem to many
29:17to just be,
29:19eh, you know,
29:19it's nothing really big.
29:21We could no longer say that.
29:23Because we were confronted
29:25with evil.
29:27We were confronted
29:28with the Satanic world.
29:33I've never really been touched
29:35with evil
29:35except for this.
29:37It was a very pious,
29:42very religious town
29:43where a majority
29:44of the households
29:45were regular churchgoers.
29:47Right?
29:48Sunday Mass,
29:49like clockwork.
29:51So it was like
29:52the devout Catholics
29:53in town
29:53had their answer
29:54that he was possessed.
29:56It was demonic possession.
30:00They're looking
30:01for a boogeyman.
30:02The boogeyman's
30:03always the devil.
30:03It was scary
30:07and then
30:08the parents
30:09were terrified
30:10that it could,
30:12their kids could be next
30:13or that they could be next.
30:14So that's where
30:15the real fear was.
30:16And as a trickle-down
30:18kind of
30:18circumstance,
30:21it's never
30:22comfortable for kids
30:24to see their parents scared.
30:25so there was
30:27this kind of
30:28low-level
30:28feeling of discomfort
30:30among the kids
30:31because
30:32we're seeing
30:33that our parents
30:35don't have all the answers.
30:37I bought into the story.
30:38Like, I felt
30:39that this was
30:40a Satanic thing
30:41and the devil
30:41was there
30:42and helped
30:43create,
30:45you know,
30:45this mess.
30:47That was me
30:48as a 19-year-old
30:49because of
30:50all the drama
30:52surrounding it
30:53and everybody
30:54was just consumed,
30:56you know,
30:56so, you know,
30:57you start to believe things.
31:01I just remember
31:02being super affected
31:04and not really knowing,
31:05like,
31:06kind of lost.
31:07The only way
31:09that people
31:09seemed to be able
31:10to make sense of it
31:11was with this
31:11Satanism angle.
31:13And I remember
31:14the one detail
31:15that they were pressing
31:16was,
31:16well,
31:16when you're possessed
31:17by the devil,
31:18you can do anything.
31:18In my 13-year-old head,
31:23I didn't know
31:25what was possible
31:26and what wasn't possible.
31:28The God
31:28and the devil
31:29and, I mean,
31:30all of my fears
31:32were about the fact
31:32that it was possible.
31:34And while I'm doubting
31:35that at the same time,
31:36I'm like,
31:37okay, well,
31:37what the hell
31:38happened next door?
31:39Because maybe
31:40it did happen.
31:41You're trying to process
31:51that
31:51and you don't really
31:52want to sleep.
31:56It just felt evil.
32:01I started having
32:02nightmares.
32:11that the devil
32:16would go underneath
32:18Tommy's house,
32:19come underground
32:20and come up
32:21into my room.
32:35And then go in my mouth
32:37and take over my body.
32:41The source of all this
33:04is the apparent
33:05practice of Satanism.
33:07It's easy to look back
33:08at this time
33:08and laugh at the hysteria.
33:11Sensationalistic news
33:12feeding parental fears.
33:14We have young people
33:15captivated in something
33:16that can make killers
33:18out of them.
33:19Religious communities
33:20turning to the only
33:21explanation they can
33:22think of.
33:23Satan.
33:25But the truth is,
33:27something made
33:28this seemingly normal
33:29child murder
33:30his mother in cold blood.
33:33And there had to be
33:34an answer hidden
33:35somewhere in his
33:36final days.
33:37About three weeks ago,
33:39the father says,
33:40in addition to an
33:41increased interest
33:41in heavy metal music,
33:43the young Sullivan
33:44had started a research
33:45project into Satanism
33:46at the Catholic school
33:47he attended.
33:54Tom Jr.
33:55was a regular student,
33:57never in my office,
33:58except the last three weeks.
34:01when we had an incident
34:05that was unlike anything
34:09I had ever experienced
34:11before.
34:14There was a teacher
34:15who came to me
34:17and she said,
34:20the students would like
34:22to have a comparative
34:25religion opportunity.
34:27She said,
34:30every group has to tell
34:32about the religion
34:33and then how it relates
34:35to or is different
34:37from the Catholic tradition.
34:39I thought,
34:40well, that sounds good.
34:41a couple days later
34:45she came to me
34:46and she said,
34:47there is a group
34:49that would like to do
34:50satanic,
34:54a satanic church.
34:57Well, I felt,
34:59first of all,
34:59it wasn't a religion
35:01like Buddhism,
35:05Hinduism,
35:06Islam
35:08and they're young
35:10and impressionable.
35:14She came back to me
35:15and said,
35:16well, if you don't know it,
35:18how can you confront it?
35:22Hmm.
35:23I thought about that.
35:25I prayed over it
35:27and I said,
35:28yes.
35:32And she,
35:33she went with it
35:35and Tom Jr.
35:38was in that group.
35:42If I could do that
35:44over again,
35:45I don't know
35:48that I would say yes.
35:56Tom took every single
35:58satanic book
35:59out of the public library.
36:01We had nothing in school.
36:03So he studied it
36:06and then he shared
36:07the information
36:08with the other kids.
36:16What did you come up with?
36:18Sacrifices.
36:20Sacrifices.
36:21I can't believe
36:24that it was like this.
36:25I don't think
36:33that children
36:34had ever faced
36:37something that is
36:41so diabolical,
36:44so different
36:45from what they believe
36:47and hold as true
36:48and how powerful
36:51it seemed to them
36:52that there was
36:53a power in this
36:54and it wasn't
36:56a comfortable power.
36:58The kids themselves
36:59said this was
37:00the scariest thing
37:01we've ever done
37:01and it bothered us.
37:06When he returned
37:08from Christmas,
37:10the children
37:14told their teachers,
37:15they said,
37:16Tom is talking crazy.
37:18So they came to me
37:19and they didn't give me
37:20any specifics.
37:21They just said,
37:23we're worried about Tom.
37:25He's saying crazy things.
37:29It's just not right.
37:32When I heard
37:33that he picked Satanism,
37:35I was like,
37:35that's weird,
37:36but that's pretty funny
37:37because it was also
37:39related to
37:40the music he was listening to.
37:41So he was making,
37:43it was a bigger joke.
37:45To me,
37:45that's what the project was.
37:46It was screw you.
37:48I like this music.
37:51And I remember
37:51some of the people
37:52in our class
37:53that he was hanging out with
37:54were much more
37:55into some of that music.
37:56I know he became
37:57closer with Chucky.
38:00Chucky was cool.
38:01He would do
38:01all the same stuff,
38:02play Manhunt,
38:02whatnot,
38:03but Chuck was super
38:04into the music stuff
38:04and Tommy and he
38:05hit it off on music.
38:09At the time,
38:09they were huge into,
38:10you know,
38:10the Black Sabbath,
38:11Ozzy stuff.
38:12So they would hang out
38:13and talk about that stuff.
38:16On Wednesday
38:28of that week,
38:30there was an incident
38:32in gym class
38:34where Tom
38:36and Chucky
38:37were cutting class
38:41and they talked
38:43the whole period.
38:45The teacher
38:46got back
38:47and found them there.
38:49She reported them to me.
38:51So,
38:52after school,
38:53I put the two boys
38:55into two different classes
38:56and I went into
38:57the class with Chucky
38:58and I said,
39:01what were you talking about?
39:03And he said,
39:06I'm not telling you.
39:09I said,
39:10you don't have to tell me
39:11what you said,
39:13but just give me,
39:14you know,
39:14what took 40 minutes.
39:18And what I got back
39:19was the most surprising
39:20answer I've ever received
39:22in my life.
39:23He was trying
39:24to convince me
39:25to join him
39:27in doing
39:30satanic
39:31things.
39:33And I said,
39:35bring that by me again.
39:39Chuck,
39:39you remember
39:40history class
39:41you were doing
39:41that religion unit?
39:42Yeah.
39:43I think you might be
39:44a good fit for it.
39:46It has a lot
39:46to offer you.
39:47What does it offer you?
39:49Power,
39:50freedom.
39:53What is it?
39:55Satanism.
39:56Chucky said
39:57that Tom Jr.
39:59was told by Satan
40:00that he needed
40:03to have disciples
40:04to proselytize,
40:07and he used that word,
40:09proselytize people
40:11to join him
40:12in his efforts
40:13to help Satan.
40:17I said,
40:17what did you say?
40:21And he was shaking
40:22and he said,
40:24I didn't do anything.
40:25I said,
40:25no,
40:26I said,
40:31no.
40:35I said,
40:36I'm happy for you.
40:38He said,
40:39but he tried so hard.
40:41He had all these reasons.
40:43He said,
40:44he really,
40:45really wanted me
40:46to join.
40:49Chucky's confrontation
40:50with Tommy
40:51may have started
40:52with this letter.
40:53It was uncovered
40:54by Jefferson police
40:56during their investigation.
40:58It's written backwards
41:00and seems to be
41:01addressing Chuck
41:02in the name
41:03of the demon
41:04of teenage lust
41:05and damnation.
41:06When you hold it up
41:07to a mirror,
41:08it reads like this.
41:10Chuck,
41:11the power of all
41:12deadly sins
41:13dwells within my soul.
41:15Do you want in?
41:16this is your last chance
41:18right back
41:20now.
41:24So,
41:25I left there
41:26thinking,
41:27oh,
41:27I have to go
41:29talk to Tom.
41:29And as I walked
41:34down the hall,
41:35I thought to myself,
41:38you know little
41:39or nothing
41:40about this.
41:44I went into the room
41:46and I just said,
41:49Tom,
41:50I was talking
41:51to the boy
41:53you were with
41:54and he said
41:56that you were
41:58trying to get him
42:00to join you
42:02in
42:04helping Satan.
42:13And he looked back
42:15in the most
42:16steeled way
42:18with these
42:19beautiful
42:20blue eyes
42:21and said,
42:23it's too late.
42:26It's too late.
42:36It's too late.
42:41The room
42:42got cold for me.
42:43It was
42:44freezing cold
42:45in there.
42:46And I thought,
42:47it was so
42:49iced.
42:50It was so
42:50convinced.
42:52It was so
42:52adult.
42:54And the way
42:55he said it
42:55was just done.
42:57This is not
42:58negotiable.
42:59It's not
42:59happening.
43:01It was almost
43:02as if I was
43:03talking to
43:04someone else.
43:09And I felt
43:11it was
43:13too late.
43:17the question
43:20for me
43:21was,
43:23was I
43:23talking
43:24to Satan
43:25or Tom?
43:28go be
43:30and
43:37go be
43:38and
43:39to
43:42and
43:42stand
43:43in my
43:44Mom gravity
43:45and
43:46went
43:47on the
43:47door.
43:47So
43:47do
43:48контр
43:48and
43:49oh,
43:49so
43:49amiss
43:51going
43:51to
43:51end
43:51over
43:52and
43:53Oh,
43:53really?
