00:29presenting to one of the hospitals in the Territory
00:31and sometimes there might even be two or three.
00:33Well over 80% of the snakes that are caught in Darwin are non-venomous
00:36but telling the difference can be down to scales.
00:39The NT has recorded six snake bite deaths in the past 20 years,
00:43five from brown snakes.
00:45First aid is very important.
00:47If we do it immediately we've got a higher chance of survival.

00:55wait for the ambulance to get to you.

01:02Catherine Country Club staff say the woman stepped on a snake
01:05while walking along a nearby suburban footpath.
01:08Without any visible puncture wounds,
01:10she wasn't sure she'd been bitten and continued walking.
01:13She collapsed about 20 minutes after arriving at the club.
01:17Time saves lives and the time was lost
01:20from the time the person was bitten
01:22to when the call was made to the ambulance.
01:25According to experts, signs of a deadly snake bite
01:28can be easily missed.
01:30Mostly people will be aware and there will be bite marks
01:32but sometimes it's even hard to find evidence of a snake bite
01:36with the Australian snakes.
01:37The strong message is avoid snakes
01:39and treat every bite as potentially fatal.
01:42Buy a decent quality first aid kit
01:44and then have the training that goes with it.
