Anti-immigration demonstration in The Hague turns violent, weeks before general election

An anti-immigration protest in The Hague, attended by hundreds, turned violent on Saturday as rioters clashed with police, set a car on fire and vandalised a political party's office.

00:00An anti-immigration demonstration attended by hundreds in The Hague turned violent on Saturday.
00:08Groups of rioters temporarily blocked the highway, set a police vehicle on fire and threw objects at riot police.
00:16The police in return used tear gas and a water cannon to disperse the crowd.
00:22Protesters also vandalized the office of center-left political party Democrat 66.
00:27Its party leader Rob Jetten called on rioters to, quote,
00:31keep their hands off political parties and said they would not be intimidated.
00:36Other political figures, including caretaker Prime Minister Dix-Hof and far-right party leader Heert Wilders, denounced the violence.
00:46Hundreds had gathered at the Maliveld in The Hague after a woman called Els Rex on social media issued a call
00:52to protest against immigration and demand stricter asylum laws.
00:55She has also denounced the violence and clarified she had intended for it to be a peaceful protest.
