00:00Free legal assistance for 500 destitute prisoners held beyond the lawful detention period in a Bangui prison.

00:11That's what 10 lawyers from the Central African Republic are offering.

00:17Financially backed by the UN, the initiative is being launched in partnership with the Ministry of Justice

00:23and aims to protect the fundamental rights of defendants and suspects.

00:29We'll start from the facts that we're going to establish.

00:36If there are detainees here who have exceeded the legal detention period,

00:41we will take it upon ourselves to write to the competent judicial authorities

00:47to repress that these deadlines be respected, or at least that these individuals be released

00:53because they're being detained beyond the legal period of preventative detention.

00:59Since the project was launched in July, around 150 detainees have been given an initial legal consultation.
