Daniel Wales reports as Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur all make winning starts to their Champions League campaigns, whilst Chelsea lose against Bayern Munich.
00:00The Champions League is back for Premier League sides for another season and this year see six English clubs from the top flight taking part in the competition.
00:09They are Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur and so far four of them have made their bows.
00:18Let's start with Liverpool who took on Atletico Madrid at Anfield on Wednesday evening where they managed a 3-2 victory against the Spanish side managed by Diego Simeone.
00:28And also saw Alexander-Izac make his debut for the Reds in front of the Anfield crowd after his move from Newcastle United on deadline day.
00:40Yeah, another great night here at Anfield. I think this is where the format is about.
00:45This is what the UEFA probably wanted to have already the first game in the group stage that could have been quarter-final, semi-final, last 16 game.
00:55And that's also what you saw today, us playing really well, getting a lot of chances to finish the game off earlier, which we didn't.
01:04And then you face a mentality team like Atletico and they always find a way to come back into the game and that's what they did.
01:10The good thing for us is that we have the same mentality.
01:13I think, again, it was a great game to watch, not only for us as Liverpool fans, but for all the fans all around the world that love to watch football.
01:21And I think that's also part of our jobs, that people like what they see.
01:28That's what we are every time trying.
01:29But a game like this should not have gone to a late game winner.
01:34Although, again, it's not easy to beat Atletico because of their mentality, but I can come up with numerous moments where we could have scored the third one.
01:43Meanwhile, Chelsea were defeated by three goals to one by German champions Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena.
01:51However, despite this, Chelsea boss Enzo Moresca was happy with his side's start to the game.
01:57I think the first 20 minutes, we start very, very good, creating two, three clear chances without conceding nothing.
02:07Then we conceded the goal that we can avoid that kind of goal.
02:12And the dynamic changed a little bit.
02:14But even with that, we were in the game.
02:15We continue to play.
02:17We score a goal.
02:18Probably in the goal we score.
02:20However, there is also a tough decision from the referee because you can also judge in different way.
02:26But no problem.
02:27Even with that, we start second half.
02:30I'm not agree with you because in the way we start second half was much better than first half until the goal we conceded.
02:38And then, again, for 10 minutes after the goal we conceded, the team was not good enough.
02:43But, again, at the end, we try again.
02:45As for Tottenham, they returned to the Champions League by scraping past Spanish side Villarreal in what was manager Thomas Frank's first-ever match coaching in Europe's elite club competition.
03:02I thought it was a big win.
03:04In any competition, it's good to get three points and get a good start.
03:12Happy with that.
03:13Happy with the clean sheet.
03:16Happy with the defensive side of the game.
03:17I think we were extremely good and limited Villarreal to very, very little.
03:22Throughout the game, a good team.
03:25I really, really admire.
03:28Obviously, offensively, we struggled on the day to create something.
03:34Against a good team that also defend very well, which we knew in the 4-4-2 structure.
03:40Very aggressive.
03:42And when we were on the day, I think they needed the highest level in terms of touch and passes and decision-making and nailed that.
03:49Finally, last year's semi-finalists Arsenal began their campaign with an away trip to Athletic Bilbao in Spain.
03:58With Mikel Arteta's side running away as 2-0 winners, much to his delight.
04:04Yes, what an amazing place to play football.
04:07I must say, one of the best atmospheres that I've played.
04:10A really tough match.
04:12We knew that the first 25 minutes, it was going to be really tough, especially the way they play.
04:17So intense, a lot of direct play, a lot of jewels.
04:19And after that, we started to grow throughout the game.
04:22And the second half, we were much more fluent, dominant, and looked much more of a threat.
04:26And at the end, the finishers, they made an impact for us to win the game and overall very happy.
04:33The idea that they are at least equally important or more important, and we have discussed that the finishes are going to be more important this season, sometimes, than the starters.
