00:12And now a new study looking at what to expect as the planet warms has revealed the stark reality we're about to face.
00:18Using simulations of possible climate outcomes, researchers found that by the end of the century, 38 to 40% of the global land area is projected to be in a different climate zone than today,
00:27meaning areas that were once not tropical might become that way, and areas that aren't deserts now might be deserts by 2100.
00:35What's more, if climate change is man-made and accelerating as we continue to pump greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, the warming is accelerating.
00:42The researchers say it's happening so fast, many species won't be able to adapt in time, meaning the extinction of many of them and the possible further collapse of entire ecosystems as a result.
00:52The study found that tropical climates will likely expand to 25% of global land mass and deserts up to 35%.
00:59But the study also found that 89% of Europe and around 66% of North America could shift from their current climate zones,
01:06with global severe climate events being more frequent and likely more catastrophic.
