Tesla Inc. has reached a confidential settlement with the family of a teenager killed in a 2019 California crash involving a Model 3 on Autopilot, according to Bloomberg. The deal, disclosed weeks before a scheduled trial in Alameda County, adds to a series of settlements Tesla has made to avoid jury trials over fatal wrecks. The Maldonado family alleged Autopilot defects caused the crash that killed 15-year-old Jovani Maldonado, while Tesla argued its system functioned as designed. Tesla is scheduled to face three additional trials in California over fatal Autopilot crashes within the next six months. The company will also go to trial in Houston in November over claims that five police officers were injured when a Tesla on Autopilot struck a parked squad car at 70 mph.
