A band of rain lingers over Wales, southwest and south England producing wet and murky conditions through the evening. The yellow rain warning for Wales is due to expire at 23:00 BST. There will be clearer skies across much of northern England and eastern Scotland. Northwest Scotland will see some coastal gales. The night will be humid with mild temperatures. - This is the Met Office UK weather forecast for the evening of 17/09/2025. Bringing you today’s forecast is Clare Nasir.

00:00Hello there, welcome to your Wednesday evening weather update from the Met Office.

00:04We do have coastal gales across the northwest of Scotland and rain across more southern areas

00:09where there's a rain warning for South Wales until 11pm this evening.

00:13Low pressure sits towards the northwest of the UK, bringing weather fronts which eventually

00:18will push northwards as we head through to Thursday and the warmth will build from the south.

00:22So there will be some warmth in the air as we head through Friday.

00:25In fact, temperatures across the southeast could reach 26 degrees Celsius, but that's not the end of the story.

00:31Cold air starts to stream in from the north as we see another weather front with a low pressure system

00:35arrive towards the southwest during the weekend.

00:38So here's your warning zone across southern counties through Wednesday evening.

00:43It's really just persistent rain. Those rainfall totals have been rising.

00:47This weather front is stalled across central southern parts of England and Wales,

00:50hence the reason why it's rather murky here.

00:52Notice across the northwest, that's where the low pressure is sitting,

00:56hence the reason why we are seeing those coastal gales.

00:59But some clearer skies across eastern parts of Scotland down towards northern England,

01:03north Wales for a time, as well as northern Ireland.

01:06But this rain continues across the far northwest of Scotland and it's a murky night further south.

01:10But look at these temperatures holding up.

01:12It's going to be rather humid.

01:1416 or 17 will be your lowest temperature through the early hours of the morning

01:18across central and southern parts of England and Wales.

01:21But it will be quite a damp start to the day with some patchy rain.

01:25Now notice this weather front here, this warm front attaches to a cold front and occlusion.

01:30It's where these fronts meet, where we're seeing a triple point.

01:33We could see some real enhancement in that rainfall as it extends from the Republic of Ireland towards northern Ireland.

01:39At the same time, it will brighten up across some parts towards the southeast

01:43and a bright start to the day across the northern half of the UK, away from the far north of Scotland,

01:47where we'll see those showery bursts of rain.

01:49But the rain will gradually march northwards through the morning into the afternoon.

01:53So for the likes of Cumbria, Lancashire, the Isle of Man, Northern Ireland,

01:57eventually southern and central parts of Scotland, you will see outbreaks of rain,

02:01with a trailing front just waiting here across the Irish Seacoast through the latter part of the day.

02:05But these temperatures will rise, responding quite nicely to any brightness in the air.

02:1022-23 towards central and eastern areas of England, eastern parts of Wales.

02:1519 for Aberdeenshire helped with that sunshine.

02:18So through Thursday evening and overnight, this weather system continues to move northwards.

02:24Again, it will have outbreaks of rain associated with it.

02:27A bit of a blustery breeze.

02:29Winds won't be as strong there across the northwest of Scotland.

02:31And this cold front continues to bring with it some outbreaks of rain into Friday morning.

02:36So if you are travelling Friday morning, it's worth just staying up to date with the forecast,

02:40because across northern England, you could run into some heavier pulses of rain,

02:44extending down towards the north and the west of Wales.

02:46Again, a stronger wind here.

02:48Now to the south of that, brighter skies.

02:50It's going to be a warm day with some sunshine.

02:53And notice this weather front here continues to bring wet weather to the far north of Scotland,

02:58with some showery bursts behind it as well.

03:00So some wet weather also for western Scotland, trailing down towards Northern Ireland.

03:05So it's a messy picture, certainly, and the weather fronts are fairly slow moving.

03:09So through the day, this zone will see that wet weather.

03:13Sunshine towards the south there, where temperatures will rise very quickly.

03:16A brightening picture for Northern Ireland and much of Scotland through the afternoon.

03:21So let's take a look at those temperatures through Friday.

03:23In contrast to the beginning of the week, we could see 26 for the home counties,

03:2822 for mid-Wales, 20 for southern parts of Wales, and even a 22 across eastern parts of Yorkshire.

03:34For Aberdeenshire, down towards Angus, even Edinburgh, we'll see temperatures up to around 19 or 20 Celsius.

03:39Further west, though, probably 17 for Northern Ireland and a 15 towards the far northwest of Scotland,

03:46where the winds will be fairly keen.

03:47So that's the picture on Friday afternoon.

03:51Certainly some lovely weather around, but this central slice always seeing more clouds

03:56and that rain just coming and going.

03:58And as we head into Saturday, here's your bigger picture.

04:01Cold air starts to stream in from the north as we see the warmth wane from the southeast

04:06and another system come in with some outbreaks of rain.
