00:00Fourth of July is coming up and you know what that means. We have to make the Ina Garten flag cake.
00:04Like Ina Garten herself, this flag cake has a cult following.
00:07Ina actually started selling the flag cake 30-some years ago in her East Hampton store to celebrate the Fourth of July every year.
00:13I put butter in the sun on the windowsill so that it would actually get nice and soft.
00:17Now it's ready to beat.
00:19I've learned a few lessons making this cake over the years and the first one is mix enough but do not over mix.
00:24You want the sugar to be creamy and dissolved. Restrain yourself from mixing too much so that your cake doesn't get too dense.
00:28Lesson number two, use a big enough pan. This batter is dense and it will sink if you don't.
00:31This frosting required a pound and a half of cream cheese and four sticks of butter.
00:36And that is perfect.
00:38You know what they say, everything's better with butter. This cake and the frosting has one and a half pounds of butter total.
00:43Which is probably one of the reasons that everyone in the Hamptons flocked to her store to get this cake and it sold out every single year.
00:49There's no better feeling than making this cake.
00:50Well, maybe eating it.
00:51So take this as your sign to get baking because...
