Malawi: General elections underway

In Malawi, polls open Tuesday for the country's general elections, which will elect the next president, 229 parliament seats and over 500 local government councilors. Malawians will choose between 17 presidential candidates, although the two front runners are the same from the last 2019 presidential elections: current President Lazarus Chakwera from the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and Peter Mutharika from the main opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). This presidential election comes after the annulment of the 2019 elections, amid irregularities and corruption scandals, that took the people to the streets in protests for the following months, resulting in a re-run of the elections in 2020 and the appointment of Chakwera as president. The electoral process follows a two-round system, where if no presidential candidate secures 50+1 percent of the votes, a run-off is held in under 30 days.
