00:01Halloween Wars is back for the most scarifying season yet.
00:06We're just missing one thing, competitors.
00:09This year, we've received more submissions than ever before.
00:12So we're going to crisscross the country
00:14to meet some of the greatest cake, pumpkin, and candy artists
00:17in their own homes who dream of competing in the new season.
00:20Who has what it takes and who doesn't?
00:23This is The Road to Halloween Wars.
00:28Oh my gosh, that's a big pumpkin.
00:29The secret to any Halloween Wars team
00:31Playing with the big boys now.
00:32is a pumpkin carver whose skills are so good
00:35That's looking badass, man.
00:37they're scary.
00:38There's so much detail.
00:39Anything creepy, I'm all about it.
00:40I forget I'm looking at pumpkin.
00:42I'm so creeped out by this clown face.
00:46The most pumpkin I've ever seen on a display in all the seasons.
00:50Oh my God.
00:53For the first stop on our hunt, we're headed to Spring, Texas.
00:57I'm Rebecca DeGroot.
01:01I'm a tattoo artist and a professional pumpkin carver.
01:04I went to school to be an art teacher.
01:06All right.
01:07What do you think?
01:11I have a very dry sense of humor.
01:13My favorite type of joke is a dad joke.
01:16How do you fix a broken pumpkin?
01:17With a pumpkin patch?
01:20Oh no.
01:21I stopped teaching about a year ago,
01:23so I've been exclusively tattooing for the last year.
01:26Being able to design a proper tattoo and making it look good on a three-dimensional object,
01:31like the human skin, is something that really comes into play when you're designing a three-dimensional carve on pumpkins.
01:39So the process kind of starts when you figure out what will work on the shape of the pumpkin.
01:45This one looks like it would work really well for a spider-type shape.
01:48It's got kind of a larger section here for the face, and we can have legs coming off in either direction.
01:57So I got into pumpkin carving because I wasn't allowed to celebrate Halloween when I was younger.
02:03We weren't allowed to dress up.
02:04We weren't allowed to go trick-or-treating.
02:05We weren't allowed to do any of those things.
02:08Once I was in college, I fully embraced the Halloween season and started carving pumpkins in my apartment.
02:15All of my pumpkins, I think, and my carves have a little bit of whimsy to them.
02:20All of these tools that I would use as an art teacher come in handy when I'm doing pumpkin carving.
02:25This is actually a tool used for printmaking, and I'm slicing in and creating that raised hair effect.
02:34I've got some potatoes over here that I think would be perfect for the fangs and maybe also the eyes.
02:41I'd say I'm the best pumpkin carver because I can carve really quickly.
02:44I can do really fine details.
02:46I want a flat-ish section so that I can attach it to the face, and that should be good.
02:53I've learned really quickly how to do what I do, and I'm determined to win.
02:57You have a nice, finished, textured pumpkin ready to scare all of your friends and neighbors.
03:05It would mean the world to me to be on Halloween Wars.
03:07I'm still really new in the pumpkin carving community.
03:10I'm coming to win.
03:11I'm coming to hopefully make some new friends, but, you know, like, kick some butt.
03:14All right, Halloween Wars, I'm ready to leave my mark on this competition.
03:18Does Rebecca have what it takes to get picked?
03:20We've still got a lot of other artists to meet.
03:23Behind every great team is a cake artist who can scare up some of the creepiest cake creations you've ever seen.
03:29I'd like to introduce you to Frida Frostbite.
03:32We're talking about the stuff that nightmares are made of.
03:34The fact that you left the roots of the teeth showing is probably the grimmest path of the whole thing for me.
03:42So each team needs the most horrifically haunting cake artist we can find.
03:46Ew, first of all.
03:48This looks like it belongs in a museum.
03:50Next, we meet a cake artist and content creator whose favorite part of Halloween is definitely the costumes.
03:57Hi, my name is Tanisha Billington.
03:58I'm from Passaic, New Jersey, and I am a cake artist.
04:01I grew up in Georgetown, Guyana, South America.
04:04Very small country.
04:06After meeting my husband here, I moved.
04:09The night of Halloween, he asked me to marry him, and I said yes.
04:12You know, I left my business, I left my family and everything.
04:15I had to rebuild.
04:16So I just started posting content online.
04:19Brands started to reach out and be like, oh, hey, I want to work with you.
04:22And I'm like, me?
04:24I already have my dragon cake, already sculpted out.
04:27But we're going to add the eyes, and then we're going to go with our airbrush just to add some definition.
04:32I've been drawing my entire life.
04:35As far back as I can remember, I draw on the walls.
04:38I initially started about 10 years ago making cakes.
04:42I love bringing characters to life.
04:45I cosplay a lot of characters, and I realized I could make all the cakes and do the cake in a cosplay.
04:50So we can already see how much cooler this looks.
04:52Because when we first started, it was just sharp lines separating the white and the red.
04:57But now that I've added the ombre, it just looks like everything is just smoothly flowing into each other.
05:03I've spent the past 12 years just building my skill, whether it was painting, sculpting, and just challenging myself.
05:13I'm awesome. I'm amazing.
05:15Look what I was able to do with my hands.
05:18And most times I'm like with three tools.
05:21Three tools.
05:22I'm like, you know?
05:24I really want to win to make my country proud.
05:27Not many of us are able to do stuff outside of Ghana like this.
05:32I'm definitely coming to win.
05:33I hope everyone bring their A game, because I'm bringing my A plus game.
05:37So now we have a dragon, an evil fairy, and a sword to cut the cake.
05:42But is it good enough to earn Tanisha a spot on Halloween Wars?
05:46This is definitely the winning cake right here.
05:48We'll find out soon.
05:50No Halloween Wars team is complete without a master sugar artist.
05:56It just has a short window of time that it stays flexible at that temperature.
06:01They're amazing techniques from blown sugar.
06:04That's perfect.
06:05Pulled sugar, spun sugar.
06:08Spinning the sugar right there.
06:09Or even tempered chocolate.
06:11The coolest thing ever.
06:12To new heights or new frights.
06:15It is vicious.
06:16It is cheeky.
06:17It is menacing, but cute at the same time.
06:19So next, we'll meet a sugar artist who says he has all those skills, plus a serious axe to grind.
06:26My name is Nils Roland.
06:29I live in St. Augustine, Florida.
06:31And I own Creme de la Cocoa.
06:33I've been doing pastry for 19 years.
06:35This will be the third time I've done Halloween Wars.
06:38Nils, this dessert, it's incredible.
06:41This is very successful.
06:42I want to throw this at you.
06:43It's so good.
06:44I've won most of the competitions I've ever been in.
06:47I just can't seem to crack winning on Halloween Wars.
06:50I'll be 80 on there competing.
06:52Be like, this guy has done like 40 shows.
06:54And I don't know why he keeps coming back, but he's trying.
06:57Welcome to the kitchen Halloween Wars.
06:59Come take a peek at my pumpkin creep.
07:01We're going to have some of the vines growing out of his nose and some leaves coming off.
07:05And we're going to, sugar's going to make this whole piece pop.
07:08Sugar always makes everything pop.
07:10I really love sugar work because it's a little bit difficult.
07:13It takes talent.
07:14It takes skill.
07:15It's hot.
07:16It's the medium that you have to know what you're doing in order for it to work.
07:20But it's just amazing how thin you can actually get it because you're just pulling basically like wires, right?
07:27A few summers ago, I had to have emergency heart surgery and I almost died.
07:32It was really crazy, but it really changed the perspective of everything.
07:36You can lose everything really quickly.
07:38And for me, being a dad and a husband and a family is the most important part for me.
07:44And when it comes to Halloween Wars, it's the same thing.
07:47You know, I'm going out there for them.
07:49I'm going out there for my family.
07:51And what does every Halloween thing have that this one doesn't have so far?
07:56Just a little bit of horror.
07:58So we're going to add a little bit of sugar blood dripping out just to tie it in a touch.
08:03You don't want to go too crazy and scared of kids that don't sleep.
08:06I think you should pick me for Halloween Wars this season because I'm just going to keep showing up and showing out and doing the best that I possibly can to try and get to my goal of winning.
08:17Time to cut the cake.
08:19It's the thing at the shop that everybody gives me the most grief about.
08:24Oh, dang, because I'm really great at what I do, but I can't win on TV.
08:30I would love to have the chance to stop that sort of nagging and ragging they got on me.
08:36You guys excited for Daddy to go on Halloween Wars?
08:39Yeah.
08:40Are we going to win?
08:41Yeah.
08:42I'm coming back for the third time, and I'm not leaving until I win this one.
08:47Will Nils get his shot at redemption?
08:49We'll find out soon.
08:50But first, just down the street from Nils, we'll meet another scary good cake artist.
08:54My name is Jessica Carr.
08:56I have been a cake artist for about 13 years now.
08:58I got into cake decorating while I was in college for psychology and advertising.
09:04Every time I got stressed out, I would bake, and that made me happy.
09:08And so I decided I was going to go to school for baking a pastry.
09:11I actually am just going to go in with this paint brush and push up the modeling chocolate
09:18into the crevices where the teeth meet.
09:21What I love most about cake is you can use them to celebrate everything and anything.
09:26It's like, I got married.
09:28Here's a cake.
09:29I got divorced.
09:30Here's a cake.
09:31I'm having a book club.
09:32Here's a cake shaped like a book.
09:33With the blood, you can add it on.
09:36You can also paint some on.
09:39I love Halloween because my birthday is actually October 20th.
09:43So I, many a time, had our backyard turned into a haunted house.
09:47I mean, I was born in October.
09:49It's like literally in my veins.
09:51I am coming to win Halloween Wars.
09:53I want red blood.
09:55That's all red blood.
09:56I have three kids.
09:57Five-year-olds, a three-year-old, and a seven-month-old.
10:00My kids will sometimes help me.
10:02They will, like, roll things out and have fun with it.
10:05Cheers!
10:06I think you should pick me for Halloween Wars because I am great at what I do.
10:12My kids have given me the best time management skills that I know would help me crush in this competition.
10:19Thanks for stopping by Halloween Wars.
10:21You better pick me or I'm going to send my little monsters after you.
10:24Coming up, we'll meet even more horrifying cake, sugar, and pumpkin artists who dream of making their mark on Halloween Wars.
10:33Plus, a sneak peek at the new season when the road to Halloween Wars continues.
10:39Halloween Wars is carving up some of the most terrifying feats of cake, sugar, and carved pumpkin you can ever imagine.
10:48Some are frightening.
10:49I don't fully know what it looks like to splay open a belly and find donuts, but I imagine it looks just like that.
10:54Some are horrific.
10:55Looking at your display, like, I am so cold looking at it.
10:58I have the chills, so that was super effective.
11:00And others just plain gross.
11:02Is it working?
11:03Yeah.
11:04How did it look?
11:05So disgusting.
11:06Okay, that special effect was really interesting.
11:11It was gross.
11:12It'll take somebody who's seriously twisted to try to top some of these creations.
11:17But a cake artist in Las Vegas thinks she's up to the task.
11:21Is she twisted enough to get selected for the new season?
11:24So this is my kitchen.
11:25Come on in.
11:26As you can see, I like black.
11:29Black is everything.
11:31I am Natalie Collins Fish.
11:32I've been a cake artist since 2006.
11:35I became a cake artist because I was actually going to go to art school.
11:40But my mom told me that I cannot be an artist because I will be a starving artist.
11:46So I decided to make art with food because at least I won't be hungry.
11:51I graduated from the Culinary Institute of America.
11:54And then I worked for Thomas Keller, Jean-George, Joel Robichon, and Tom Colicchio.
11:59My life is cake.
12:00Everything in my life revolves around cake.
12:03I even have it on my knuckles.
12:05It says cake life.
12:06You want a plate too?
12:07Cute!
12:08Cute!
12:09Cute!
12:10My family calls me Natty.
12:11But most of the time I go by mommy or bruh.
12:15I have two boys and they are my biggest fans.
12:19Landon thinks that I'm like the best cake decorator ever.
12:24He tells everybody that I'm famous because he thinks I'm famous.
12:28So here I have made a version of myself of what I look like in the morning when I wake up.
12:34I don't have a big gap in my teeth though.
12:36We are going to keep working on her here.
12:38I refer to myself as like the Picasso of cake artistry because I have a very unique style.
12:44I feel like a lot of cake artists are similar to each other.
12:48But I have a creative chaos to my work and it definitely has its own vibe.
12:53So what I have here is I have a mixture of my blood.
12:56As you can see it's very bloody.
12:59This is cherry jello with water.
13:03We could throw it at her.
13:05I think I'm the best cake artist for Halloween Wars because my style is something that most people, no, nobody has.
13:13I have a very unique style.
13:15I also can work very, very quickly.
13:17I've done stuff most cake artists would think is impossible to do.
13:21Done.
13:22Does she look like me?
13:26Halloween Wars, I'm coming for you.
13:28And we're going to show you what cake life is all about.
13:31Now that's a tough act to follow.
13:33Next up, we hit the road to Loosedale, Mississippi to meet another pumpkin carver who dreams of getting picked for the new season.
13:39Halloween Wars, let's crackalacka.
13:41Come on in.
13:43But watch your heads.
13:46My name is Brian.
13:47So I've been carving pumpkins now for about 14 years.
13:49The first thing that even sparked me to want to do it was watching Ray Villafane on that first season of Halloween Wars.
13:55And just seeing how he could sculpt and create crazy pieces.
13:59So I just jumped in, started learning some of the tricks of the trade, watching some videos here and there until I finally figured out kind of what techniques worked.
14:07I was shaving it.
14:08I'm using basically a wood rasp.
14:09It carves pumpkin skin off.
14:11I've been an emergency nurse practitioner 20 years now.
14:14I would say favorite aspects of it is just being able to make a difference, especially in the ER.
14:18We do anything from sewing folks up, treating runny noses, to broken bones.
14:23So it is chaotic at times.
14:26It's like Halloween Wars, if you think about it.
14:29It looks terrifying.
14:31I would be too if I woke up and saw me.
14:33I mean, I've always liked art.
14:35I've always been involved in drawing like from as far back as I can remember.
14:38I remember as a kid, I was just constantly picking up books and trying to teach myself.
14:42I very much love drawing cartoons.
14:44I think that cartoons kind of carry over into my caricatures whenever I'm carving.
14:48This is where we're going to put his magic potion in with a little dab of green food coloring.
14:53I've got six children.
14:54Sometimes they get frustrated because I'm carving like all the time during the season.
14:58My wife, as much as she'll pick at me about carving pumpkins, she's usually the one that goes out and gets me my first one each year.
15:04That is my little tribe, my little support group.
15:07We could give him legs, but I want him running off.
15:10The reason I'm the best pumpkin carver for this show, it's certainly not looks.
15:14I can assure you that.
15:15You better have two lenses whenever you record me, because look at me.
15:18Unless that lens is tough, it's going to break.
15:21What I'm bringing to Halloween Wars is comedic relief, one.
15:25Two, maybe some chaos.
15:27I'm not afraid to mess with somebody's mind if I got to in order to gain an edge.
15:30If nothing else, I'm going to say a lot of stupid things.
15:32I'm going to be energized the whole time.
15:34I'm like perpetual pumpkin power.
15:38There you go.
15:39Triple P, baby.
15:40That's me.
15:41You met my Dr. Jekyll.
15:45Don't make me break out high.
15:46Is perpetual pumpkin power enough to earn a place on one of our teams?
15:50We'll find out soon.
15:52Next, we head out west to California to meet a pharmacist turned cake artist.
15:57Come on in.
15:58With a terrifying secret in the fridge.
16:02Or maybe it's just a cake.
16:04I'm Rachelle Reyla-Sterry.
16:05I'm from San Jose, California.
16:07I'm a pharmacist.
16:08I'm also a cake artist.
16:10I work remotely.
16:11So working from home allows me to just have a creative side.
16:15So I just started making cakes for my kids.
16:18And so I started documenting all of my baking on social media.
16:22But then to my surprise, people started following me and it just kind of exploded from there.
16:27It's really important to get the finishing details because it creates the character.
16:31Like if I don't get her spooky enough, it's just going to take away from what you're trying to accomplish.
16:36I was born in Quezon City, Philippines.
16:39We moved to the United States when I was about seven years old.
16:42I didn't grow up knowing about ghost stories and horror stories.
16:46And so now I'm just really into Halloween.
16:49It thrills me.
16:50I love it.
16:51If my mom makes them on Halloween Wars, she'd probably win.
16:54We'll see.
16:56The idea is to add dimension.
16:59It would mean a lot to me to win Halloween Wars because I would just be so proud of myself for being self-taught and making it this far.
17:08The challenge on this show is to not focus on the super tiny, tiny details because this is going to be super time consuming.
17:15You should pick me for Halloween Wars because I'm creative.
17:18I have a lot of energy.
17:20I'm happy with her.
17:21I'm ready.
17:22I'm ready to come to the show, compete, make the biggest and baddest, spookiest cake ever and win this competition.
17:29Now let's jump up to the Pacific Northwest to meet somebody who might look a little familiar.
17:39Hey, Halloween Wars.
17:40Hey, Halloween Wars.
17:41Do you remember me?
17:42I'm Jamie Lauchs.
17:43I'm from Seattle, Washington.
17:44And I've been on Halloween Wars twice as a cake artist.
17:47But this time, I want to come back as a sugar artist.
17:52I made it to the end on both seasons that I was on, but it was a loss both times.
17:58Nobody likes to get second place multiple times.
18:01It's a very frustrating feeling.
18:04In the finale of season 14, literally, I had a piece falling apart in front of me.
18:11Just cake collapsing.
18:13And I can't leave it that way.
18:16I can't leave that as my last impression on Halloween Wars.
18:19I need to come back and make up for that.
18:22Today, I am making a spectacular insect Halloween-y spooky sugar showpiece.
18:28And I'm just going to add some extra details to it.
18:31Now that I've made my piece out of sugar, I can actually paint on it with alcohol and food colors.
18:37On my first season of Halloween Wars, I was definitely not a sugar artist.
18:42But I am a classically trained pastry chef.
18:45So that means I have been trained in sugar art.
18:48So I've always had the knowledge.
18:50I am a firm believer in constantly learning something new and keeping yourself creatively fresh and new and active.
18:59I'm going to do what's called a little bit of dry brushing.
19:02And so I will take a little bit of this paint onto my paintbrush here.
19:07And I'm going to actually dry it off on my towel.
19:10And then I can go in here and start doing accents.
19:14So the kind of art that I really enjoy making usually is kind of out of the box.
19:20Lots of color.
19:21I want something larger than life.
19:23The vast majority of my home is very colorful, very quirky.
19:27It makes a statement when you walk in.
19:30And, you know, I see a lot of this kind of coming out in my art.
19:34Zuzi, what's happening?
19:36It's disgusting.
19:38It's disgusting.
19:39So I live at home with my husband and my two daughters.
19:42I also have two dogs.
19:44And we have two guinea pigs.
19:46And we have a fish tank loaded with little tiny fish.
19:49There they are.
19:50They're so little.
19:51It's just chaos.
19:53Evie has really funny long butt hair, which makes me laugh.
19:57Such long hair.
19:59Just on her butt.
20:01If you don't invite me back on again, you're going to have to deal with all of these guys.
20:05The guinea pigs are hungry and they're almost out of lettuce.
20:11You need me on your show again because I can do all of it.
20:15I am the kind of teammate that can help everywhere and really, like, lift my team up and make sure that we get it done.
20:23I need redemption.
20:25Will Jamie get her shot at redemption?
20:27We'll find out soon.
20:37Halloween Wars is more than just scare raising displays.
20:41It's also home to some of the most deliciously disgusting edible creations you could ever imagine.
20:47So this is a caramelized onion and pear bonbon.
20:50This is a very bold, confident, assertive bite.
20:55Dig your fingers in the grass.
20:57Ew!
20:58Oh my gosh!
20:59What is happening?
21:00What is it?
21:01Oh my God!
21:07It's a blood orange gummy.
21:09Yeah!
21:11It's gummy.
21:13Caramel popcorn.
21:14The idea was to create a box to create a surprise.
21:18Oh!
21:19Oh!
21:20Wow!
21:21What?
21:22So for the tasting element, we have a soy sauce salted caramel truffle, but it is infused with fresh lime zest and candied ginger to cut the sweetness.
21:30This bite is so trippy. It gives me sushi vibes.
21:33Yes!
21:34Right?
21:35Yes!
21:36It's just genius.
21:37I can't even with you.
21:38We have to go because the judges are going to eat all of them. Thank you guys.
21:41Who else can make your mouth water while they send chills down your spine?
21:45Let's find out as we head to Utah to meet a cake artist who thinks she has what it takes to get picked for the new season.
21:51My name is Kylie Holt.
21:52I am a custom cake artist from Clinton, Utah.
21:55By day, I am a Zumba instructor and by night, I am a cake artist.
22:00When I was 11, my dad sent me to space camp in Florida and I fell in love with space.
22:07And at that point, I decided I am going to do whatever it takes to be an astronaut.
22:12I finally got accepted to the United States Air Force Academy and I was miserable there.
22:19So, I came home, I married my sweetheart and I knew I needed something as a stay-at-home mom to keep me busy and to keep my creative juices flowing.
22:29And that's when I started picking up cakes and it just took off from there.
22:32Whenever I do a piece, I always try and think about color.
22:36How are the colors going to work together?
22:39I am just going to use a little bit of brown gel and a little bit of orange gel color.
22:45And I am mixing this with a little bit of water.
22:48I may not have made it to space yet, but my cakes defy gravity.
22:54And I use the science and the math and everything that I learned to become an astronaut in my cake designing.
23:01I mean, cake is a lot of science.
23:03See how the paint is all gathered in one little puddle right there?
23:06That's okay because when it dries, it will give a really neat look to these rocks.
23:12This is definitely not my first rodeo.
23:14I participated in several different competitions throughout the years.
23:18I won best in show in the Sugar Artists of Utah competition.
23:22I've also had my work printed in several magazines.
23:25So while I know I'm going to be competing against some amazing talent, I think they've got something coming for them.
23:32Will Kylie's cake skills earn her a place on one of our teams?
23:35We've still got a few more artists to meet.
23:37As our road trip continues, we make our way to Illinois to meet a sugar artist who really knows her stuff.
23:43My name's Becky Miranda.
23:45My full-time job is being a mom.
23:49And my part-time job is doing sugar art and teaching other people how to do sugar art.
23:55My business is 5'2 Baker because I'm a baker that is only 5'2.
24:01I always had to use my daughter's stepping stool.
24:05All the shelves are always too high for me to reach.
24:08Most of the year, I spend my time making beautiful things, some pretty sugar flowers, but tis the season.
24:14So we're going to work on something a little more spooky and we're going to create a little friend for my giant sugar spider here.
24:23I think what makes my sugar art different and unique are the mediums that I use.
24:30I actually created my own flour paste, so I'm most known for my flexible flours.
24:36You'll notice that as you roll it out, it's pretty translucent.
24:43You can get it really thin.
24:45You could actually rip pieces off and eat them.
24:49Just as an example here go, some snowdrops that I made, some unpainted morning glories.
24:58So you want to be careful when you're doing this and just do not full pumps, but you just want to do little micro pumps so that you can see the ball growing.
25:09I am comfortable working with tons of different mediums, tons of different ways, and I haven't gone to school.
25:18So there is no just one right way for me to do things.
25:21It's allowed me to really explore and find my way and do things that other people normally would not do.
25:28If you pick me for Halloween Wars, you're not going to be disappointed.
25:33You're going to see a lot of cool things.
25:35It would mean the world to me to be on Halloween Wars, to know that everything I'm doing is valued and is worth it, and I'm good.
25:46Halloween Wars, I can't wait to show everyone what I can do.
25:50Now that's what I call a sugar spider.
25:52But is Becky the scream of the crop?
25:55We'll find out soon enough.
25:56Next up, we head to the heart of New York City to meet a Halloween-obsessed cake artist who's big on the creep factor.
26:02My name is Serena Harnett. I am a first-generation Cambodian-American.
26:07I was actually born in a refugee camp there, but I basically grew up in the United States.
26:12Halloween, it was actually something that I will always remember, especially as a kid.
26:16Dressing up, trick-or-treating, egging people, running away from bullies, and those are things I absolutely love doing.
26:22My husband and I moved to the city about 10 years ago. Cake design and decorating is just something I picked up on the fly.
26:29I'm totally self-taught. I do have an art background, though. I studied it in college, so it's really helpful for me.
26:35The name of my business is Deadly Dame Cakes, and I just came up with it because my husband and I are very much into the pin-up community and tiki and whatnot.
26:46And so it's just something I conjured up at 3 o'clock in the morning, so that's how it came about.
26:52This is where the glam lives, friends. We have here our vintage and faux skulls, skirts, shirts, heels, collection of them.
27:05All of the dresses, various colors. Of course, here are all of the bags that I reach for on the daily, so as you can see here, my beloved pumpkin head is my favorite.
27:17So he's at the forefront, so absolutely love him.
27:20My specialty is horror-themed and Halloween-themed cakes, but I do everything.
27:27It would mean the absolute world to me to be picked for Halloween Awards.
27:31It is the Olympics of Halloween. I'm bringing the spook factor, I'm bringing the sculpt, I'm bringing the artistry, and I'm bringing myself.
27:40And that is why I'm gonna win Halloween Wars.
27:52Sometimes the scares in Halloween Wars aren't just our team's creepy creations.
27:57When pumpkin, cake, or sugar go bump in the night, the results can be terrifying.
28:03We have a breach.
28:04Oh, no.
28:05Oh.
28:06I think she's fixing it.
28:07It's falling apart, guys. I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry.
28:12Oh, my God. That leg is on the ground.
28:15Damn.
28:16Oh, my gosh.
28:17Hold it, hold it, hold it.
28:19Oh, my God.
28:20The cake is falling.
28:22Oh, no.
28:23What just fell?
28:24His lamp.
28:25The lamp cracked.
28:26Yeah, but it looked messy.
28:28Oh, no. The chain broke.
28:29The chain just fell.
28:30Oh.
28:31I don't even wanna look.
28:32No, don't.
28:33I don't even wanna look.
28:34I decided to just quickly get some black buttercream and start drawing the face on for him.
28:41No.
28:42Oh.
28:43No.
28:44No.
28:45The whole thing fell off.
28:46Oh, I feel so bad for Matt.
28:48Sure, you can't stop gravity, but we're looking for artists with the skills and drive to recover and take their teams to new heights.
28:55Hi, my name's Kimberly Rivers. I'm from Farmington, Utah.
28:58So I started doing wedding cakes and sugar about five years ago.
29:02I just started out making cakes for my kids for their birthdays, and then neighbors started asking me.
29:07And then I decided, you know, if I'm gonna start selling them, I should probably make an official business.
29:10And from there, it just started to grow.
29:12So we're gonna start off by melting some isomalt.
29:15We decided we're gonna make a purple pumpkin.
29:20As I spread the isomalt out, it will start to cool.
29:23I draw a lot of inspiration, actually, from my friends.
29:26We have a lot of fun getting together and doing what we call edible photo shoots.
29:31And so we'll dress up in character and we'll create all of our accessories, jewelry, just different items that we can use to go along with our characters.
29:38And this kind of just takes practice of knowing where it needs to be placed.
29:43We'll stick that in there.
29:45Halloween, when I was a kid, was the most fun holiday ever.
29:49And now, as a mom, I want my kids to have the same experience.
29:52Just the one night that you can go out and just kind of just be crazy.
29:55Here, let's all get some chocolate chips. Here.
29:57You can all have some.
29:58I'm gonna throw one and catch it in my mouth.
29:59I'm a stay-at-home mom, which is actually my most favorite job in the whole world.
30:03I love my kids so much.
30:05And we also love to bake together.
30:07My kids love to come in the kitchen and help me make all kinds of things.
30:10Usually on Sundays is our bake day.
30:12Don't eat the chocolate chips.
30:15I want to do Halloween Wars because I love pushing myself to the next level.
30:19I definitely want to win and just kick everyone's butts.
30:22You should pick me for Halloween Wars because I'm, first off, willing to work really hard.
30:27I'm gonna put in all the energy that I have and all my knowledge and to make the piece as best as I can.
30:33Halloween Wars, I am coming for you. I want to win this.
30:36I got all the skills. I got the sugar. I got the cake. And you better watch out.
30:40Does Kimberly have the skills to get picked? We'll find out soon.
30:45Now we make our way to Chicago to meet a pumpkin carver who might be young but knows how to bring the scares.
30:51Halloween Wars? What are you doing here?
30:54Just kidding. You can come in. Okay, come on.
30:58My name is Ethan Anderson. I am 23 years old and I am a full time artist.
31:06I consider myself a multidisciplinary artist. I do sculpture. I do carving. I do illustration, painting, and primarily animation.
31:15Alright, I'm using this pointy loop to etch out some bricks right now.
31:22I started carving pumpkins since my parents let me pick up a knife.
31:27And then I saw the first season of Halloween Wars and that skyrocketed me into practicing as much as I could.
31:34When I first started competing in carving competitions, I think I was just viewed as like the young guy.
31:40But after having some experience and competitions under my belt, I think I've gained the respect of all of my peers.
31:47What do you think about this?
31:49Beautiful.
31:50Beautiful.
31:51I think I'm a combination of both creative and incredibly thoughtful, smart, and methodical.
31:58What makes me the best for a pumpkin carving competition is like, well, I'm the tallest and the strongest and the prettiest.
32:05So, put that on top of my pumpkin carving skills, like they should all leave before they show up.
32:11What are we doing here? Come on now.
32:13Before I watched Halloween Wars and then was inspired to go sculpt, I had only ever done drawings and paintings.
32:21And so, really being able to compete and having the chance to win would be such a full circle moment to show where that brought me.
32:29Alright girls, what do you think?
32:31Wow, it's so amazing.
32:34I'm bringing my creativity, my technical skill, my winning personality, my charming good looks.
32:39There's nothing more that you could ever want.
32:40Here I am, I'm the next winner of Halloween Wars.
32:43I'm gonna come to Halloween Wars more prepared, more confident, and more excited than anybody else.
32:49I'm not scared of anything, but they should all be scared of me.
32:52Halloween Wars, search for the next crop of cake artists, sugar artists, and pumpkin carvers who dream of being picked for the new season just keeps on trucking as we hit the road to Grand Junction, Colorado to meet a pumpkin fanatic who knows how to think big.
33:09Hello, I'm Willie Toos. Welcome to Western Colorado Botanic Gardens. Come on in.
33:14This is where I create the largest pumpkin sculptures in Western Colorado.
33:19I am a professional pumpkin carver. I got into pumpkin carving 15 years ago. I grew up in Cancun, Mexico.
33:25My dad was a chef, and he used to do small carvings with vegetables.
33:30When I was eight years old, I started carving fruit and vegetables.
33:34Watermelon was one of my favorite fruits to carve. That's what got me into pumpkin carving.
33:38This is our first pumpkin of the season, and we're ready to carve.
33:42I use a couple of tools. These are clay tools, but they are reinforced to be used for pumpkins.
33:49And it's actually sharpened all the way down so it can go through the pumpkins easy.
33:56When Halloween season comes, I create really large sculptures here at the gardens.
34:02We use 1,000 pumpkins to make this happen.
34:05This year at the gardens, I'm hoping to create larger-than-life sculptures with 1,200 pumpkins for everyone to see.
34:12This is one of my favorite tools to do little details on the pumpkins,
34:16because it lets you add a little wrinkle on the skins.
34:19And you can go deep with it, but without cutting a lot of the skin of the pumpkin.
34:24I am a single dad. This is my son, Willy, my best friend.
34:28My son is 18 years old. I introduced him to pumpkin carving.
34:32He actually helps me with the projects that we do every year.
34:36Oh, like a boat? Yeah, or a boat.
34:38With the sinking. That's a good idea.
34:40Working with my son, Willy, definitely helps me and motivates me, too.
34:44So when this type of competition comes, I always want to go win and show him everything is possible.
34:50I have been in Halloween Wars before. I really enjoy the competition.
34:54Oh, my gosh. What is it?
34:56That's awesome.
35:01I was so close to winning, I made it to the final.
35:03This is the year that I really want to go and bring the prize home.
35:09Halloween Wars should pick me because I bring a lot of passion in each work that I do.
35:14And then for two, this style of work that I bring in, it's kind of unique.
35:19Halloween Wars. I'm coming for the win this time.
35:22Now we head back to Florida to meet a paralegal turned sugar artist who serves up detailed sugar delicacies with a distinctly Florida flair.
35:31I'm Kelly Shivery. I live in Wellington, Florida.
35:34I really got into sugar art by making cakes for my children when they were small.
35:41And I was really fascinated with isomalt and how versatile it is.
35:46My sugar art is different because I really like to have a little nod to Florida in all my pieces.
35:53Today, I'm just finishing up my lovely Merdusa, we'll call her, my Medusa mermaid.
36:01So I frequently get up very early in the morning and work on sugar and cake projects before I start work at eight.
36:10I'll use a variety of edible paint and petal dust.
36:14And then when I get off work again, I do sugar work and cake.
36:19Just like a mullet, she's going to be business in the front, party in the back.
36:24I really enjoy the gory aspect of Halloween because I think it's really fun to have like a dessert imposter.
36:32It's fun to me to make something that looks like a gory finger, but it's a really tasty treat.
36:37Hands off my piece.
36:39Being on Halloween Wars is a bucket list item for sure.
36:43She is ready for her close up.
36:45Halloween Wars, I'm coming.
36:48That's pretty creepy, but is it creepy enough to earn a spot on one of our teams?
36:53We're about to find out.
36:55Coming up, we'll find out whose skills are terrifying enough to get picked for the new season and get a special sneak peek when the road to Halloween Wars continues.
37:09Halloween Wars is more than just scare raising displays.
37:14It's also home to some of the most deliciously disgusting edible creations you could ever imagine.
37:20So this is a caramelized onion and pear bonbon.
37:23This is a very bold, confident, assertive bite.
37:28Dig your fingers in the grass.
37:29Ew!
37:30Ew!
37:31Ew!
37:32Oh my gosh, what is happening?
37:33What is it?
37:34Oh my...
37:35Ew!
37:36Ew!
37:37Ew!
37:38Ew!
37:39It's a blood orange gummy.
37:41Yeah!
37:42It's gummy.
37:43Caramel popcorn.
37:44The idea was to create a box to create a surprise.
37:50Oh!
37:51Oh!
37:52Wow!
37:53What?
37:54So for the tasting element, we have a soy sauce salted caramel truffle, but it is infused with fresh lime zest and candied ginger to cut the sweetness.
38:02This bite is so trippy.
38:03It gives me sushi vibes.
38:04Yes!
38:05Right?
38:06Yes!
38:07It's just genius.
38:08I can't even with you.
38:09We have to go because the judges are going to eat all of them.
38:12Thank you guys.
38:13Who else can make your mouth water while they send chills down your spine?

45:43We decided we're gonna make a purple pumpkin.
45:47As I spread the isomalt out, it will start to cool.
45:51I draw a lot of inspiration, actually, from my friends.
45:54We have a lot of fun getting together and doing what we call edible photo shoots.
45:59And so we'll dress up in character, and we'll create all of our accessories, jewelry, just different items that we can use to go along with our characters.
46:06And this kind of just takes practice of knowing where it needs to be placed.
46:10And stick that in there.
46:12Halloween, when I was a kid, was the most fun holiday ever.
46:16And now, as a mom, I want my kids to have the same experience.
46:19Just the one night that you can go out and just kind of just be crazy.
46:22Here, let's all get some chocolate chips here.
46:24You can all have some.
46:25I'm gonna throw one and catch it in my mouth.
46:27I'm a stay-at-home mom, which is actually my most favorite job in the whole world.
46:31I love my kids so much, and we also love to bake together.
46:34My kids love to come in the kitchen and help me make all kinds of things.
46:37Usually on Sundays is our bake day.
46:39Don't eat the chocolate chips.
46:43I want to do Halloween Wars because I love pushing myself to the next level.
46:46I definitely want to win and just kick everyone's butts.
46:50You should pick me for Halloween Wars because I'm, first off, willing to work really hard.
46:54I'm gonna put in all the energy that I have and all my knowledge in to make the piece as best as I can.
47:00Halloween Wars, I am coming for you.
47:02I want to win this.
47:03I got all the skills.
47:04I got the sugar.
47:05I got the cake.
47:06And you better watch out.
47:07Does Kimberly have the skills to get picked?
47:10We'll find out soon.
47:12Now we make our way to Chicago to meet a pumpkin carver who might be young but knows how to bring the scares.
47:19Halloween Wars?
47:20What are you doing here?
47:24Just kidding.
47:25You can come in.
47:26Okay, come on.
47:27My name is Ethan Anderson.
47:31I am 23 years old and I am a full-time artist.
47:34I consider myself a multidisciplinary artist.
47:37I do sculpture.
47:38I do carving.
47:39I do illustration, painting, and primarily animation.
47:42All right, I'm using this pointy loop to etch out some bricks right now.
47:49I started carving pumpkins since my parents let me pick up a knife.
47:54And then I saw the first season of Halloween Wars and that skyrocketed me into practicing as much as I could.
48:01When I first started competing in carving competitions, I think I was just viewed as like the young guy.
48:07But after having some experience in competitions under my belt, I think I've gained the respect of all of my peers.
48:14What do you think about this?
48:16Beautiful.
48:17Beautiful.
48:18Beautiful.
48:19I think I'm a combination of both creative and incredibly thoughtful, smart, and methodical.
48:25What makes me the best for a pumpkin carving competition is like, well, I'm the tallest and the strongest and the prettiest.
48:32So put that on top of my pumpkin carving skills, like they should all leave before they show up.
48:38What are we doing here?
48:39Come on now.
48:40Before I watched Halloween Wars and then was inspired to go sculpt, I had only ever done drawings and paintings.
48:48And so really being able to compete and having the chance to win would be such a full circle moment to show where that brought me.
48:56All right, girls, what do you think?
48:57Wow, it's so amazing.
49:01I'm bringing my creativity, my technical skill, my winning personality, my charming good looks.
49:06There's nothing more that you could ever want.
49:08Here I am.
49:09I'm the next winner of Halloween Wars.
49:10I'm going to come to Halloween Wars more prepared, more confident, and more excited than anybody else.
49:16I'm not scared of anything, but they should all be scared of me.
49:22Halloween Wars.
49:23Search for the next crop of cake artists, sugar artists, and pumpkin carvers who dream of being picked for the new season.
49:29Just keeps on trucking as we hit the road to Grand Junction, Colorado to meet a pumpkin fanatic who knows how to think big.
49:36Hello, I'm Willie Toos.
49:38Welcome to Western Colorado Botanic Gardens.
49:40Come on in.
49:41This is where I create the largest pumpkin sculptures in Western Colorado.
49:46I am a professional pumpkin carver.
49:48I got into pumpkin carving 15 years ago.
49:51I grew up in Cancun, Mexico.
49:53My dad was a chef, and he used to do small carvings with vegetables.
49:58When I was eight years old, I started carving fruit and vegetables.
50:01Watermelon was one of my favorite fruits to carve.
50:04That's what got me into pumpkin carving.
50:06This is our first pumpkin of the season, and we're ready to carve.
50:10I used a couple of tools.
50:12These are clay tools, but they are reinforced to be used for pumpkins, and it's actually sharpened all the way down so it can go through the pumpkins easy.
50:23When Halloween season comes, I create really large sculptures here at the gardens.
50:29We use a thousand pumpkins to make this happen.
50:32This year at the gardens, I'm hoping to create larger-than-life sculptures with 1,200 pumpkins for everyone to see.
50:39This is one of my favorite tools to do little details on the pumpkins, because it lets you add little wrinkles on the skins.
50:46And you can go deep with it, but without cutting a lot of the skin of the pumpkin.
50:51I am a single dad. This is my son, Willy, my best friend.
50:55My son is 18 years old. I introduced him to pumpkin carving.
50:59He actually helps me with the projects that we do every year.
51:03Oh, like a boat?
51:04Yeah, or a boat sinking.
51:06That's a good idea.
51:07Working with my son Willy definitely helps me and motivates me, too.
51:12So when this type of competition comes, I always want to go win and show him everything is possible.
51:18I have been in Halloween Wars before.
51:20I really enjoy the competition.
51:22Oh, my gosh.
51:23What is it?
51:28That's awesome.
51:29I was so close to winning, I made it to the final.
51:32This is the year that I really want to go and bring the prize home.
51:36Halloween Wars should pick me because I bring a lot of passion in each work that I do.
51:42And then for two, this style of work that I bring in, it's kind of unique.
51:47Halloween Wars.
51:48I'm coming for the win this time.
51:50Now we head back to Florida to meet a paralegal turned sugar artist who serves up detailed sugar delicacies with a distinctly Florida flair.
51:59I'm Kelly Shivery.
52:00I live in Wellington, Florida.
52:02I really got into sugar art by making cakes for my children when they were small.
52:08And I was really fascinated with isomalt and how versatile it is.
52:14My sugar art is different because I really like to have a little nod to Florida in all my pieces.
52:21Today, I'm just finishing up my lovely Merdusa, we'll call her, my Medusa mermaid.
52:29So I frequently get up very early in the morning and work on sugar and cake projects before I start work at eight.
52:37I'll use a variety of edible paint and petal dust.
52:41And then when I get off work again, I do sugar work and cake.
52:46Just like a mullet, she's going to be business in the front, party in the back.
52:51I really enjoy the gory aspect of Halloween because I think it's really fun to have like a dessert imposter.
53:00It's fun to me to make something that looks like a gory finger, but it's a really tasty treat.
53:05Hands off my piece.
53:06Being on Halloween Wars is a bucket list item for sure.
53:10She is ready for her close up.
53:12Halloween Wars, I'm coming.
53:15That's pretty creepy, but is it creepy enough to earn a spot on one of our teams?
53:20We're about to find out.
53:22Coming up, we'll find out whose skills are terrifying enough to get picked for the new season and...
53:27Get a special sneak peek when the road to Halloween Wars continues.
53:37It's the last stop on our road trip to meet the greatest cake artists, sugar artists, and pumpkin carvers in the country
53:43who dream of competing in Halloween Wars 15.
53:46What better place to stop than Anaheim, California to meet a talented sugar artist whose skills are downright scary.
53:53I'm Andy de la Cruz.
53:54I am a pastry chef here at the Weston Anaheim Resort.
53:58I have been making cakes and baking cookies and whatnot for 30 years.
54:02I worked in restaurants and then from a restaurant I worked at a hotel and then never left the hotel industry after that.
54:08And so I learned a lot from the people that I work with and the chefs that I worked under.
54:12I enjoy designing cakes.
54:14Look at just any kind of art, whether it's pictures or sculptures, and translate that into desserts is very unique for me.
54:23Remember the magic number is 165.
54:26I've been working with sugar for years now.
54:29Sugar work is its own art in itself because you're dealing with temperature and you're dealing with time.
54:35I feel like chocolate is a little bit more forgiving than sugar work.
54:39And you're dealing with heat.
54:41And your fingertips can only handle so much heat.
54:44By doing this, this also helps you to capture more of the details.
54:49So for Halloween, we create a lobby display for our guests to enjoy.
54:55We take themes from movies or whatnot, and we just create this little piece of scenery.
55:01And it's all made out of chocolate and candy and whatnot.
55:04And nothing is supposed to be perfect. So in life, nothing is perfect.
55:08In nature, nothing is perfect.
55:10So it's one of the things I like about trees.
55:14You have to pick me for Halloween Wars because not only will you get a person that knows how to work with a lot of mediums, but I work great under pressure.
55:24I love what I do.
55:26I am very hungry, and I want to win this so bad.
55:29I'm going to bring everything.
55:30Nothing is going to be held back, and I'm going to go for it.
55:33Watch out.
55:35Halloween Wars has crisscrossed the country in search of the most talented cake,
55:39sugar, and pumpkin artists who dream of competing in the new season.
55:44Now it's time to find out which of the artists we met tonight will join this year's crop of Halloween warriors.
55:50From our pumpkin carvers, we got Willie and Rebecca.
55:54Congratulations. You're going to be on Halloween Wars.
55:58No way! Oh my God, that's amazing!
56:01Oh goodness, I can't wait to show off my pumpkin carving skills. This is going to be so cool!
56:07For our sugar artists, Kelly.
56:09Really? You're not pranking me, are you?
56:13Mills.
56:14Yeah! I'm back, baby!
56:16Kimberly and Jamie.
56:19Yes! Woo!
56:20And from the cake artists, Natalie.
56:22I told you I was good at this.
56:24Serena.
56:25Oh my gosh!
56:28Kylie.
56:29Oh my gosh, I am so excited. This has been a bucket list show of mine all of these years.
56:35I am so excited. I finally made it on the show.
56:38And Tanisha.
56:39Oh my God, no way. Are you for real?
56:42That means Andy, Jessica, Rachel, Becky, Ethan, and Brian didn't quite make it.
56:48But they're still scary good artists.
56:50Now let's meet this year's terrifying teams.
56:53Poisonous Perfection.
56:55The Undercakers.
56:57Krung Creepers.
56:59Graveyard Shift.
57:01Terrifying Trio.
57:03Wicked Sculptors.
57:05And Oven Coven.
57:07These ghoulish groups are stacked and ready to kill it on this season of Halloween Wars.
57:14Seven teams of the best pumpkin, cake, and sugar artists battle it out in the most wicked season of Halloween Wars yet.
57:25Oh my God.
57:26I'm getting big fight energy.
57:28This is the first time I've ever seen anything like this.
57:31Halloween Wars is the Olympic for pumpkin carvers and cake artists.
57:35Their designs will be nightmare inducing.
57:37When in doubt, let's throw blood on it.
57:39Unsettling.
57:40So gross.
57:41I was triggered.
57:42And there will be plenty of terrifying treats.
57:45These are gorgeous.
57:46Ew.
57:47It's delicious.
57:48It's creative.
57:49This dessert will haunt me for the rest of my life.
57:52The challenges will be more brutal than ever before.
57:56We want you to take a stab at a Halloween style true crime.
58:00I know it's Halloween Wars, but yikes.
58:03The Boogeyman's lair.
58:04Okay.
58:05We're freaking out.
58:06A creature on creature contest.
58:09Did you see the thighs on that werewolf?
58:11Yes.
58:12And the misery will be more horrifying than anything you've seen yet.
58:17Something's burning.
58:18Oh, oh.
58:19In the end, only one team will be declared Halloween Wars champions.
58:22If we don't get the cake character on, we're going home.
58:24And walk away with $25,000.
58:27Why is he so slow?
58:28We can't all be winners, okay?
58:30Hop, hop.
58:31Well, that's the best eyeball I've ever had.
