00:00And FBI Director Cash Patel is about to face some tough questions when he testifies this week on Capitol Hill.
00:06After some mistakes in his handling of Charlie Kirk's assassination investigation,
00:10conservative activist Charles Ruffo posted this, Chris Ruffo posted this,
00:17it's time for Republicans to assess whether Patel is the right man to run the FBI,
00:22adding that he performed terribly in the last few days.
00:25So Patel prematurely announced the suspect was in custody.
00:28He also appeared to take credit for the FBI's release of images that ultimately led to the suspect's arrest.
00:34Here's how Utah Governor Spencer Cox sees it.
00:38This was a co-lead operation.
00:41So the FBI was co-lead with the state.
00:44We worked very closely together.
00:47I think Director Patel would tell you it was flawless.
00:50It was everybody just trying to decide, is this a good idea?
00:53The reasons to release it, I think, are pretty obvious, right?
00:56It makes it easier for lots of people to see it and maybe find someone.
01:00Group chat is back.
01:01I wanted to bring this up because these questions were sort of coming from inside the House, so to speak.
01:07And we were pointing out Ruffo's tweet in particular because it was not just some flyby post of, like, this guy is bad.
01:14It was a long explanation of why he thinks people should assess this.
01:17What do you think is happening with Patel?
01:21We were talking about the fact that he wasn't on the Sunday shows this weekend.
01:25Right.
01:25The White House has specifically asked Utah Governor Spencer Cox to sort of be the face of the investigation,
01:32but also just the point person talking about this.
01:36But the Kash Patel criticism has been going on well before the assassination of Charlie Kerr.
01:41Because of Epstein?
01:41Largely because of Epstein.
01:43And other just, there's a lawsuit against the FBI for the termination of some key employees.
01:49That's part of it.
01:50But the rank and file has been growing increasingly dismayed by his leadership.
01:57Yeah, there's a lawsuit by these former employees.
01:59But I think the Epstein thing is probably much more of a challenge for him.
02:04But look, he's going to appear before a House committee on Wednesday, I believe,
02:09and that is going to be a central issue.
02:11I'm skeptical, even though at the White House I've heard people sort of not thrilled with his leadership.
02:16Well, I can give you more than that.
02:18Here's Steve Chung, who's the White House comms director.
02:20He says anyone who doubts Patel's resolve and dedication,
02:24especially when Charlie was such a close friend to him,
02:27is simply as using this extremely sad moment in a disgusting act of political gamesmanship.
02:34Yeah, look, and the issues with Patel go back to his appointment to the job in the first place, right?
02:39Remember that the FBI director quit.
02:44Chris Ray should have had more time on his term,
02:47but he got out of the way because he knew he was going to be fired for Patel,
02:50who a lot of people thought was not the right person for the job to begin with.
02:54I do think that one of the things that Patel is going to need to explain,
02:59maybe even to the people on the Hill in this hearing,
03:01is on Wednesday, after Charlie Kirk was shot,
03:04as Patel was putting out these tweets that were putting out information that was not correct,
03:10he was at a fancy restaurant in New York having dinner.
03:13He was at Rao's, right?
03:14which is itself, Kirk was his close friend, I've never had a close friend assassinated.
03:21It is a choice to then go to an exclusive restaurant in New York City and have some pasta.
03:26Yeah, and I think to Jeff's point about some of the rank and file being very frustrated,
03:30Kash Patel seemed to come out and take a lot of personal credit for finding the suspect,
03:34when in reality, if you listen to Governor Cox,
03:36they feel as though it was a joint effort with the local law enforcement on the ground and the FBI,
03:39and then also typically, when it comes to the FBI, it's such a bureau-first mentality.
03:44It's not an individual-first mentality.
03:46You typically are going to cite officers and investigators within the bureau,
03:49opposed to, you know, sort of citing, taking your own credit for it.
03:52Another thing that I'm watching, just the way that Kash Patel is managing his own
03:56and the FBI's social media is very curious.
03:59So to say, one, that you have a suspect in custody,
04:02and then to have the Utah local law enforcement say that there is still a suspect at large,
04:07having the FBI have to scramble and come back out and say that they released the person,
04:11it was a very preemptive social media post that made the FBI look very disorganized.
04:16I also just caught recently, he screenshotted something from Fox News citing FBI sources.
04:20In a very professional situation, you yourself as the FBI don't need to cite a news organization
04:25citing sources from within your bureau.
04:27Right.
04:27You just say something to yourself.
04:28And it gets at this issue of, like, as he's come in,
04:30he's brought the talents that the administration has appreciated, right?
04:34The loyalty, the ability to communicate.
04:36But did he, has he done things within the ranks that actually are creating real problems for investigations?
04:43Yeah, and, like, one of the things that we see in other investigations about other things
04:47in past administrations is that the Justice Department doesn't usually say that much.
04:51The FBI doesn't say that much for a while.
04:52Right.
04:52So it's kind of an unforced error.
04:53This is part of why they don't.
04:55And it drives those of us in the reporting world crazy because we want to know more information.
04:58But sometimes the information is not verified or it's incorrect,
05:02and they're trying to hold it back until it goes public.
05:04But, again, the criticism of him was happening before the Charlie Kirk assassination.
05:08And I'm wondering now, talking to people, will this assassination and all the outpouring
05:13of Charlie Kirk actually sort of help Patel politically because they did arrest someone,
05:19and will that become the focus of the hearing, as opposed to the other issues with Epstein and
05:23other things, which are very real inside the bureau.
05:25And take those things sort of off the table.
05:27Right.
