00:00:00This video is brought to you by R.I.P.
00:00:30was last weekend's dutch grand prix a defining moment in the season you be the judge
00:00:54it's mclaren versus mclaren as piastri leads norris by nine points
00:00:59tomorrow tomorrow i'll do everything i can in my power to win because that's what i've lived for
00:01:05my whole life he has dialed in this weekend this is going to be so tight can norris take it away
00:01:16no way he's missed out by 12 thousandths of a second piastri in mclaren's private battle
00:01:24takes all position at the right time i've not been dominant like oscar's been pretty
00:01:29much on me the whole time but you know it's a long race there's opportunities
00:01:32the show resumes piastri holds the lead paul launch off the line for lando around the outside and
00:01:39nearly dropping in the car max verstappen went all in to take p2 and he got it the early overtake
00:01:46is most effective lando norris at the first time of asking takes back the place that is what hunger
00:01:52looks like nice job let's go get oscar i got smoke from the cockpit i think there is smoke lando norris
00:02:01has a problem oil leak failure i'm out a huge moment in the world championship
00:02:08oh sorry mate you were fast today you were really fast i know i know unlucky boys to lose 25 points
00:02:16outright it hurts oscar piastri wins the dutch grand prix that's life lando norris's final nine
00:02:24races me just ring out the world champion in them i really make sure i do everything i can
00:02:28at the end of the campaign is this the day that we will call decisive
00:02:35that gap now extends to a 34 point lead for oscar piastri yes that's a hammer blow to norris's title
00:02:51hopes but we've still got nine races to go in 2025 and as you and i know in f1 anything can
00:02:57and will happen on this gaffe the mighty monza has dropped a jaw or two over the years it's a track
00:03:05steeped in history and when our drivers love for its high speed the fans here are partisan in the
00:03:10extreme they only care about the red cars and my goodness does the brancing horse need a good
00:03:16weekend after both their drivers failed to finish last week but like i said it's all to play for
00:03:22hello and welcome to qualifying day in italy at monza david courthard is with us in the temple of
00:03:30speed as it's known around these parts it's no secret that this is a track beloved by anyone who's
00:03:36ever sat in the cockpit what's monza got that's so blinking special dc lots of plus 200 mile an hour
00:03:44driving into big stop chicanes it's got the history you know you've got parabolica you've got the
00:03:49escari chicane the two lesmos you must even get excited about the two lesmos yes yes and thrice
00:03:55yes let's look in the rear view for a moment dc zamvort game over philando
00:04:00too early to say that but it was a crushing blow in this modern era of they target 100% reliability and
00:04:08that seem that may seem a completely obvious target but in motor racing you very rarely achieve
00:04:13that but mclaren have just been bulletproof until he had that oil leak it's just one of those things
00:04:19obviously it's not lando's fault but now i suppose you can throw caution to the wind dc i think that
00:04:25until they win the constructors which on the current target will probably happen around azebujan
00:04:30then they can throw caution to the wind okay because the target is achieved and that's been
00:04:34very clear from the team they want to win this constructors championship and then the drivers
00:04:38the gloves are off interesting what i'm hearing there is that he's under orders because an unfettered
00:04:43lando could be dangerous for piastri and mclaren in general before the constructors yeah they don't
00:04:48want to basically elongate that that journey to winning the constructors that's where the money is
00:04:53that's where the glory for the entire team is and that's the building blocks of making sure you're in
00:04:57the right position in the pit lane for next year okay um let's focus on oscar for a moment
00:05:01he's been driving so well just crazy crazy good to steal pole last weekend from lando
00:05:06after lando topped every session up until that point and then oscar took control of the race it
00:05:12was an absolutely flawless display you might say dc don't put words in your mouth but he kind of
00:05:17deserves to be a world champion well he's driven all season like a world champion he's been leading
00:05:22the world championship for the majority of the year and that's not to take anything away from lando
00:05:26but given he's in his third year he's just kind of laid his fingerprint down on you know certainly
00:05:32put a thumbprint on the world championship trophy and it's for lando to now go and somehow overhaul
00:05:39the points deficit um let's shift focus for a minute uh to max verstappen he drove his car to
00:05:45the limit last weekend fantastic stuff um that overtake on lando at the start was glorious um eventually
00:05:51lando would have a dnf which would gift max second place but that ended essentially a forest run of
00:05:57no podiums rebel uh are they back are they on the march dc well i think he was realistic all the way
00:06:02through that weekend that they were not competing for the win so getting that second place getting a
00:06:07podium was the maximum target and unsuspecting and and certainly a surprise to see the mclaren drop out
00:06:13but i think here he's back in the mix you know mclaren of course have got momentum with them
00:06:19but this track is a very different challenge and it may be one a little bit like a suzuka where
00:06:23suddenly we could have max steal a pole okay we'll keep an eye on red bull meanwhile their sister team
00:06:29the racing bulls have got themselves a burgeoning superstar isaac hadja got his first podium at the
00:06:34dutch grand prix it was his 15th race in formula one keep in mind it took nico halkenberg 239
00:06:39races in short dc this kid isaac hadja he's the real deal which kind of has taken us by surprise
00:06:46considering that crash on the formation lap in oz at race one well to use a mark weber expression
00:06:52you know formula one isn't a finishing school so race one he was caught out as were others but how
00:06:57he's matured that performance around a really difficult track in zamvort and hot in the slip
00:07:02stream in the dirty air of max verstappen i think it shows that the car's working well but there's a
00:07:07freedom and and a sort of you know his mind is just allowing him to focus on the next corner next
00:07:13lap which is where you need to be he doesn't have the baggage yet of expectation we will judge him
00:07:18when he actually has the big opportunity we've seen many drivers that let's say a mid-grid or
00:07:23just inside the top 10 team where they can look good but when you've got the pressure of having a world
00:07:29championship car that's when you truly find out okie dokie thanks dc we've got a chat with isaac
00:07:33coming up in a little bit but first let's hear from some of our drivers ahead of the weekend
00:07:37oh when we return we'll discuss ferrari it won't be pretty i mean i can i can try yeah win a race
00:07:44and get some points um i can't really turn it around it's not that simple but yeah um you know
00:07:50there's still plenty more races to to try make up for the the points i lost last weekend um
00:07:55and i've got to look at it that way rather than any other way so uh that's the way i'll be doing it
00:08:01because it was nice to to be on the podium um in zandvoort uh of course we need to stay realistic
00:08:07i think the pace and the race wasn't anything particularly strong so there's still a few things
00:08:11that we need to understand a bit better why in the race it didn't really go to plan um but yeah
00:08:17this is a completely different track low downforce yeah completely different corners as well so
00:08:21i don't know um i guess we'll find out tomorrow hopefully we can start a bit in a good place and
00:08:26and just go from there it's been an emotional roller coaster what can i really say um did i
00:08:33expect to it to be as volatile in terms of the feeling uh no but that's life and i like to think
00:08:42that we're coming even though we had a difficult sunday we're coming out of the on the brighter end
00:08:47of the tunnel and um i'm really trying not to worry about tomorrow i'm really trying to be present
00:08:51enjoy every moment because you know this this half of the season has gone by really quick that's my
00:08:58first you know half a season with uh with this team and there's obviously a long way to go i don't want
00:09:03to miss any of these special moments that we're having like for example like yesterday like my first
00:09:07monza in ferrari in red when i leave the garage tomorrow it's going to be incredibly special being
00:09:12on the receiving end of the tofosi and and i'm i want to give them absolutely everything this weekend to
00:09:18get the best result for them oh ferrari where do we start both drivers failed to finish the dutch
00:09:26grand prix hamilton made a mistake found the wall leclerc was hit by antonelli that ended him
00:09:31it's not the team the tofosi were expecting to welcome home at this point in the season dc no way
00:09:38no but it feels that other than that little flash of brilliance in the sprint in china for hamilton and
00:09:44then the unbelievable pole position from leclerc in budapest they've been kind of used to the fact
00:09:49that they're excellent point for bond yeah third best team maybe um uh but it's monza and who knows
00:09:57they can do something special here i want to do a bit of a deep dive on hamilton um he came to ferrari
00:10:03with great fanfare we were all incredibly excited but overall the 15 races until now have been a very
00:10:10damp squib apart from that flash of brilliance in china as dc mentioned uh it really feels like
00:10:14he's struggling in a way we've never seen you know that mistake last weekend plus a five place grid
00:10:19penalty carried forward to monza for ignoring yellow flags and speeding in the pit lane this is not the
00:10:24lewis hamilton we're used to this is a new guy we've never seen before yeah well the old cliche it never
00:10:29rains but it pours it just feels that off the back of the end of his mercedes run alongside george
00:10:35he'd lost his mojo there we hope that he would rediscover it at ferrari be energized by the power
00:10:42of the defozy but it just hasn't worked out and this is not an opinion business because i know
00:10:47there'll be people at home going how dare you say something negative about lewis hamilton
00:10:50the guy is brilliant and he has been brilliant but you're judged against your teammate and that's the
00:10:56one thing that stands between him right now and a big result he's got to consistently get in front of
00:11:01charles we've been scratching our heads as to what's going on fred verser offered a bit of a
00:11:06an opinion in the week he said that they might have underestimated the importance of the change from
00:11:11mercedes to ferrari on every level changing car changing culture we know hamilton isn't afraid of
00:11:16a challenge but this might be the one he'll struggle to rise to you know forget about challenging
00:11:21for wins dc like he just said he's got to beat his teammate he's losing qualifying 11-4 he's 42 points
00:11:26behind leclerc in the driver's standings it's it's bleak yeah those are the statistical facts and
00:11:34i wish i had some kind of guiding light as to how he's going to turn that around i struggle to buy
00:11:41into the whole or change a culture it's a race car right left throttle brake yes there's another way
00:11:48terminology but a power unit's a power unit downforce is downforce when you break this sport down to its
00:11:54simplest forms it's about human and machine and the very best at their peak are able to master that
00:12:01so the question is and i'm going to say it is he passed his peak time will tell this time last year
00:12:08charlac took the top step for the tofosi it was a magnificent sight dc what are their chances in 2025
00:12:13yeah they have a chance but i think in outright paced terms this is mclaren still have that that little
00:12:22bit of momentum with them but it's so tight it's so tight i think no one can absolutely kneel who's
00:12:28going to come away with the pull but after everything we just said you got to assume hamilton will win
00:12:32everything now let's head over to ariana and alex thank you steve well it wasn't a great weekend for
00:12:40ferrari but it was a very good weekend for ollie bearman starting in the pit lane and finishing a career best
00:12:48p6 i mean what a result absolutely outstanding from him and to be honest he kind of needed it
00:12:54he's had great core pace all year long but rookie errors like getting penalties under red flags and and
00:13:00that sort of thing it's costing big points and he finally delivered it on the most unlikely starting position
00:13:05of the pit lane yeah it was a great weekend for him another team though that's worth talking about
00:13:10is williams and that one was one of mixed fortunes we had alex albon with this fantastic p5 finish
00:13:16and then carlos signs p13 10 second penalty for the collision with liam lawson and it hasn't ended there
00:13:24one of the all-time worst penalties that we have ever seen in formula one he was fuming
00:13:29he couldn't believe what he was hearing when he got it crucial for him he was running in the points
00:13:33could have been a great day for him as well as alex albon yeah they've gone to the ever thrilling
00:13:39right of review where if you provide new evidence you can get that penalty overturned now obviously
00:13:45it's not going to change his race result but they just want a line in the sand to say that was wrong
00:13:50we were hard done by and set a precedent so that's what they're doing with the right of review but we
00:13:54haven't got the update on that yet well we will keep you updated if and when we hear more but let's now
00:13:59turn our attention to some of the breaking news from this weekend and that is from alpine
00:14:03pierre gasly extending his contract until 2028 that's some commitment it is and a lovely big pay
00:14:10rise congratulations pierre gasly he's a great team leader for them he scored all the points for
00:14:16them this year and they he was already on the grid for next year so they didn't need to get that done but
00:14:21they've got that done early so that anyone's sniffing around he's off the market the first bit of good
00:14:26news they've had in a really long time so that's important for team enstone absolutely and some nice
00:14:30motivation heading in to this weekend lovely stuff thank you very much guys all right let's take a
00:14:36quickie isaac hanjar tells us all about his maiden podium on the other side last week was spectacular
00:14:41it was definitely unreal you were stuck to max for staff and like glue you want to be careful you could
00:14:52end up being his teammate it was quite surprising to see that he wasn't putting away how do you think
00:14:56you'd fare against him in a red ball what means the most to me is to prove myself and i'm the best and
00:15:01my facing max in the same car is the best way to find out
00:15:05monza is very very special the emotions keep building up and up and up and up you just have
00:15:28to pinch yourself the feeling of being a ferrari driver you are living that moment
00:15:32the italian grand prix is underway i try and do absolutely everything to win and to make
00:15:40something happen that we thought was not possible come on charles keep it up these are magical moments
00:15:45dreams at monza dreams do come true charles clare is the winner of the italian grand prix
00:15:52for ferrari very unexpected it was amazing
00:15:56it was a very special moment
00:16:06well that man did manage to go from fourth to winning this race last year and will he have
00:16:14the opportunity to satisfy the jifosi this year well we'll find out later just what the outright
00:16:18pace is verstappen back in the hunt here only about a tenth and a half away from the fastest
00:16:24mclaren in free practice so do not write him off but uh that's the most uh let's say closest neighbor
00:16:32to the ferrari team but of course the team that have earned their place right at the beginning of
00:16:39the pit lane entry this has to be a qualifying that lando converts talk about pressure they know
00:16:46they've had the car this year to more often than not top the times but he's just been shaded by
00:16:51oscar piastri and uh also close in zandvoort yeah what can his strategy be try and pick up a
00:16:58distant tour he's not going to get one of those from his teammate but he may well get someone else
00:17:02out there to help him on track thank you david right i'm sure we all remember seeing a young
00:17:09frenchman's realized dream of racing an f1 turn into a nightmare when he crashed out on the formation
00:17:15lap in oz kind of like a footballer snapping an ankle on their way to the pitch an embarrassing gaffe
00:17:20yes without doubt but here's the twist in the tale pretty much everything he's done since then
00:17:26has been brilliant isaac hadjar come on down what a day for the racing bulls driver isaac hadjar
00:17:362025's king of the rookies last week was spectacular isaac hadjar you are p3
00:17:44unreal oh thank you boys what a car you must still be buzzing you're the youngest ever frenchman
00:17:51to stand on the podium just your 15th outing in formula one can you put it into words what that
00:17:58meant to you standing out there on the podium it was definitely unreal and especially like out of the
00:18:0324 tracks of the season there's like one random track i wouldn't expect a podium is zandvoort i don't
00:18:10know why but yeah zandvoort the celebrations were huge and judging by the tears we saw in the garage
00:18:17you've made quite the impression on this team they love you once i'm in the car i deliver and that's
00:18:24what also they they like about me and i think it's the way we've done it so much on top of it from
00:18:29qualifying to the race yeah we did on raw pace really apart from norris what happened to lando
00:18:35we were earning that fourth place already which was huge i couldn't believe it you know you were
00:18:41stuck to max verstappen like glue you were all over him no mean feet and i was thinking you want to be
00:18:47careful you could end up being his teammate we didn't think we would race mice we were thinking
00:18:51we're racing russell uh the ferrari behind so that was quite surprising to feel like to see that he
00:18:56wasn't pulling away there's a photo doing the rounds at the moment of you and max standing side by
00:19:01side you're very young you got a thumb up big grin on your chops and now you're racing against him
00:19:07i would love to see you in equal machinery how do you think you fare against him in a red bull
00:19:13i just want to test myself and see how good i am that's what drives me really to fight the best in
00:19:19the world so now you're telling me that i get the opportunity to drive alongside the best driver in
00:19:25the world in the same machinery this fires me up that's what means the most to me is to
00:19:32prove myself and i'm the best and by facing max in the same car is the best way to to find out
00:19:38famously your f1 journey didn't start as you intended you've crashed out of the formation lab
00:19:44in oz no way isaac hadjo and he has gone into the wall absolutely heartbreaking to see we saw how
00:19:53much that meant to you how much has that day shaped the day since i think it's part of my story
00:19:59the way i joined formula one i knew tougher moments than what happened in in melbourne
00:20:04in six okay at other moments so it's definitely still character building it happened now i just
00:20:11gotta bounce back and show what i'm made of and now you're facing the prospect of driving at one of
00:20:18formula one's most iconic tracks monza can we expect another zandvoort it's definitely a track where
00:20:25anything can happen due to the layout but we need to be smart with the toe games we can make a
00:20:30difference use our head but obviously you need a lot of things out of your control to align and have
00:20:37a the same weekend isaac keep doing what you're doing you're crushing it pleasure talking to you
00:20:42yeah six rookies at the start of the season and he has to be the standout of the batch dc where does
00:20:51he rate on the david kulfard scale of excellence well he's certainly doing everything right in terms
00:20:57of getting his first opportunity in formula one and showing when an opportunity is there to stand out
00:21:01so i i put the e of excellence but i come back to what i said earlier that many drivers can look good
00:21:08with a certain amount of freedom and lack of pressure once you put them in the pressure of
00:21:13expectation some of them don't shine so that's what we don't know right now yeah in short isaac uncle
00:21:18david says don't mess it up all right uh big quality coming up dc norris can't put a foot wrong
00:21:25ferrari need to turn the tide who do you think is going to master the temple of speed today
00:21:28it feels that mclaren still have it there to to establish a lap time it feels that lando like
00:21:34we saw on zanvoort has the upper hand over oscar but oscar sneaks his way in towards the end so i'm
00:21:40going to go with mclaren but i do think that ferrari and red bull have a chance to put a car in the
00:21:44front row thank you very much david kulfard let's get to it let's join alex jakes jolian palmer
00:21:48and an incoming david kulfard in commentary for qualifying at munza oh yeah alex i saw you strutting
00:21:53through the paddock dress as a black pantomime horse earlier flippin' heck panda to the
00:21:58italians match shameless i assume you roped palmer into being the rear end well he auditioned for
00:22:05the role steve but dc insisted on bringing up the rear hello everyone welcome to one of the best
00:22:11qualifying sessions of the season green light at the end of the pit lane who is hamilton queued up
00:22:18at the moment a reminder for you he has a five place grid penalty from wherever he qualifies
00:22:24in the session today his first qualifying session for ferrari at monza charlotte's first run he's
00:22:32heading down the iconic main straight cheered on by the tofosi heading to the retafilo chicane
00:22:37yeah they're going to be all giving a little blow of wind from behind to try and reduce the drag on
00:22:44that long run down to that first corner well over 200 miles an hour as he spot the brakes through the
00:22:49chicane nice and tidy and now he's got a feel for what his tire prep has been like he can be a bit
00:22:55more adventurous in the second chicane which again is pretty much a mirror image of of the first maybe
00:23:01slightly quicker through the second apex and then these two fantastic lesmo corners we had the chance
00:23:07to be on track actually together didn't we and um they're sort of blinking you miss it corners one
00:23:12leads very much into the other and we can see already someone has managed to drag some gravel
00:23:18onto the track which is an inconvenience rather than at that stage of the corner a loss of grip
00:23:23carlos science was the driver in front of charlotte claire through that corner
00:23:28uh before him out on track not saying it was him but he was the one who was ahead
00:23:33uh that is going to be an interesting thing to keep an eye on as we go through the session
00:23:38the man with 27 career pole positions takes the tightest possible line this is the only track on
00:23:44the calendar that charlotte claire has won at multiple times he was the winner here last year
00:23:49he won it from fourth on the grid it's ferrari one it's ferrari two 19.8 for leclerc and 19.9
00:23:57for hamilton max is stopping through curva grande his first effort in q1 if you're one of our newer
00:24:03viewers we will lose the five slowest cars at the end of the session first that's being completed
00:24:09max estappen fourth in final practice earlier on and he's hoping that he can fight for pole position
00:24:16he's much much happier after practice than he was a year ago where the ripple just didn't work
00:24:22and you can hear the brush through the gravel on the exit of the second lesmo it was carlos
00:24:26signs who dragged the gravel onto the circuit and for that reason is that time has been deleted on run one
00:24:31yeah you could do you could hear that the gravel sort of rattling off the side of the car
00:24:36it's not affecting your lap time at that stage because you've done the apex of the second lesmo
00:24:41but it just doesn't feel good and also these aerodynamics on the car are super sensitive to
00:24:47any sort of damage and pitting so um he continues on his lap and we're about to find out how he opens
00:24:54this qualifying session let's see where he stacks up compared to charlotte claire very close
00:24:59one hundredth of a second away lewis hamilton a tenth away hulkenberg looking strong once again
00:25:05and bork leto found himself in p6 earlier on for sauber so they've had good form around here
00:25:10as we check in with lando norris who has the fastest middle sector so far joelian palmer
00:25:15he's been so quick through that middle sector all weekend and he's been so quick through parabolica
00:25:20all weekend so the two mclarens are out now trying to get the first time on the board
00:25:24verstappen is closer to ferrari in terms of the downforce trade-off he's quicker on the straights
00:25:29not so quick through the corners as these guys norris put it so tight on the exit of parabolica
00:25:34as well to minimize the distance and there we go it's the fastest final sector as well so straight
00:25:39into it for lando visibly quick visibly quick which seems such an obvious thing but you could see the
00:25:45difference of the body language of those two mclarens especially norris in comparison to
00:25:49leclerc and verstappen now maybe they're just a bit more sort of intent at this point in qualifying
00:25:54than the others who are just looking at systematically getting through to the uh the final two parts of
00:26:01quality but um that's definitely a sort of mark in the sand from norris yeah the cornering speed
00:26:05they've got is just significantly more than any of their rivals the straight line speed isn't so
00:26:10actually the race even if they lock on the front row it could be interesting tomorrow with the tactical
00:26:14choice they've taken here's carlos signs heading to the second lesmo corner and that's the gravel
00:26:21that we saw in the path of charlaclair yeah just desperate to get on the power but not able to rotate
00:26:26the car there for uh for the second lesmo the williams has been quick with a planted rear end but a little
00:26:31bit of understeer and that was just the understeer there that uh led to the gravel
00:26:35yeah so verstappen that was uh an error as he went through the apex there as well as you see the
00:26:45brake dust coming off the williams and then that under rotation at the first chicane
00:26:49so when we joined the in car with verstappen it looks and sounded very much that he was just picking
00:26:54up signs his gravel but he made the same mistake russell's still out there on the medium tires
00:26:59kimmy antonelli has improved but only to 15th position and russell goes fastest of anyone so far
00:27:05yeah the aston martin uh loves the racetrack where you bolt on the downforce this is the fastest of
00:27:11the year when it comes to the average speed around the circuit bortleto goes into fourth position
00:27:16and russell's fastest on the mediums let's see what signs does his time is deleted for running over the
00:27:21curb his second effort puts him to p3 wow truck grip coming up that's the same set of tires that he lost
00:27:27the lap on so he's not put a new set of tires on unlike alonso and he's gone straight up to the
00:27:31sharp end so he's got great form here big lap for kimmy antonelli 19 years of age looking to escape the
00:27:37bottom five and take his place in the top 15 continuing his qualifying hour his first lap on the
00:27:44soft tires as he attacks the national autodrome of monza not tight enough spotting the braking through
00:27:50the first chicane he's got as that well that's the aston that's going to pull out of the way but it'll
00:27:56give him a little bit of a boost coming off the corner yeah and he's still got the staff and just
00:28:00nicely positioned ahead of him as well so a good personal best then for uh for antonelli in the
00:28:04first sector where you take that distant toe off uh of the staff but now you don't want anyone really
00:28:10in front of you for these corners the lesbians where he spun off yesterday so haja is the driver
00:28:16at risk at the moment haja now in the drop zone ocon went out first ocon has set a time good enough
00:28:21for 11th bearman has set a time good enough for sixth position the track is ramping up here
00:28:27you've got to find the best lap time right now and antonelli is up against alex alban but you would
00:28:33expect alban to take a big step forward on his lap as well yuki sunoda going to p3 shows you that
00:28:39you need your best lap right now if you're on track there are some big names who are having good
00:28:44weekends really at risk here yeah antonelli's matching um sunoda so this should put put him
00:28:51right up there and that top three or four over the line he goes he finds the 11th fastest time
00:28:58whoa so he's one last six one tenth slower than sunoda he's one tenth sunoda's fourth
00:29:03antonelli is 11 is incredibly close that close that i've ever seen he's three tenths of the quickest
00:29:09three tenths of a second away but monza with the high speeds and we know it's close it was the
00:29:15closest ever top six here on the grid in formula history one year ago then we broke that record
00:29:21this year it got even closer haja on the podium last time out only to 15th and a star of zandvoort
00:29:29is at risk at monza here comes gasly he comes over the line wait for alex alban in the drop zone
00:29:35he is improving sector one sector two colopinto gets ahead haja a serious risk here we'll wait
00:29:42for alex alban here he is here's the danger man for haja can he escape he does but only to 15th
00:29:49position haja to the drop zone strong can't make it out colopinto gasly and liam lawson in the pit
00:29:56lane isaac haja is only half a second away from the pace but he's out extraordinarily close at monza
00:30:03and hulkenberg has gone quickest in that first sector looking like he's getting the advantage of
00:30:08the toll from bartoletto so let's see where the two saubers place so seventh for bartoletto
00:30:16hulkenberg in 13th he will go chasing his first q3 appearance of the year because he's made it
00:30:22through into q2 and that is haja back down to earth stroll half a second away as well colopinto
00:30:31ahead of gasly and then you've got lawson in the pits at the back as we complete our final fast
00:30:38laps we've dealt with the drop zone unusual to have dealt with the drop zone and see so many cars
00:30:42out on the racetrack piastri's dropped down to 10th position and the timing stands and does not improve
00:30:48on russell's time which has set the fastest of all on the medium rubber didn't even need to go back
00:30:54out on the soft the confidence then of the the lead machine he's just sitting on the top on the
00:30:59mediums uh norris does find a little improvement so again a bit quicker than piastri on both runs
00:31:04on the on the soft but that was the same set of tires for uh for the mclaren so that's wide track
00:31:10limits but also just a six tenth loss then for liam lawson that's the moment that costs him and he's
00:31:1620th in the order haja stroll colopinto gasly and lawson out in q1 we are coming yeah obviously of course
00:31:37the sun is out in monza we have a green light at the end of the pit lane this is such a good
00:31:49opportunity for uh for carlos circuit that he's very good at he's got great form uh it was quick
00:31:55in the lando norris in there two years together at this circuit was one of his best even in the rivalry
00:31:59with with lando is one of his best in the rivalry with charles so it's no surprise to see him ride up
00:32:03there today we're nose camp with max verstappen two-time winner of this grand prix and he is
00:32:09heading to the chicane underneath the old banking last use for a formula one grand prix in 1961
00:32:14and into a sky yeah it's just a fantastic lap that unfolds here given that how much of it
00:32:20julian is sitting on the straight essentially but there's enough interest in each of these
00:32:25different corners to link into a great lap and you have so much time to think about them don't you
00:32:30as we ride on board with max towards the parabolica all of the time and thinking should i go 50 meters
00:32:33on the break should i go 55 i'll meet in the middle and do 52 meters on the brakes and turn it in you
00:32:39have so much thinking time again and we could be heading down to a first one we're going to back up
00:32:43here because he's finishing the lap and a very quick one at that but you have so much time and it's so
00:32:48important to get your braking right especially on this track more than ever because there are only six
00:32:53corners the braking leads to the to the mid corner which very quickly will find your exit as well
00:32:58and if you miss the braking you compromise your exit particularly the chicanes
00:33:02the staff and fastest george russell a tenth and a half back ollie bearman looking to try and tie the
00:33:09head-to-head battle between him and estevan ocon 87 down coming in to this weekend
00:33:1616th grand prix of the year and we're on board with driver number 16 charlotte claire taking it to the line
00:33:25and going third fast there's two tenths of a second away we need to box with that
00:33:30and that's an instruction to come back to the pits for lando norris so an issue affecting him there and
00:33:38they need to come back to the pits and he was preparing there we go we're on board now with the
00:33:44clower and driver yeah no uh no indication as to what that is which could be as something as simple
00:33:52as they didn't put fuel in when you're sitting in the garage that's what i was thinking if it was
00:33:57a bigger reliability concern you'd normally hear don't change gear keep the rev slow you'd hear some
00:34:02further instruction but just come back into the pits feels like it is something fairly basic
00:34:06so norris back in championship leader 10th and a half away in third finding himself four thousandths of a
00:34:14second slower than george russell's efforts and back into the pits lando norris is pushed just upsets
00:34:21the flow as well though when you're trying to be taking pole position you've got the championship still
00:34:26in the balance you need to hit back and he's had the weekend that he's had so far which is very good
00:34:30turn one for chicane it's going to be going deep
00:34:33okay so probably he's made the mistake actually and then the team has said we don't have fuel for
00:34:42another lap so just pick and we'll go again and that's why alvin's time is only enough for 13th
00:34:49because he's in too deep at turn one as well i wonder if the wind's just picked up on the tail there
00:34:54down towards turn one still feels remarkably still he's in the pit lane just before we we uh we came
00:35:00on air here and there's like no wind at all but all the drivers seem to be struggling with a pushing
00:35:05tailwind yeah all talking about that down at turn one okay lando it will be tight for push cool cool
00:35:11push so april the first i'll update you as to what we can do from there well that was just that they
00:35:20did have a bit of fuel but i think they would have just put them out of sequence if they'd done that
00:35:25next lap they've refueled haven't they so i think they initially were just going to go out
00:35:30one flyer you're absolutely hunky-dory this weekend just do another lap but now this is no
00:35:35chances mclaren five minutes on the board they can't afford to fluff it again but just in case
00:35:40he's going to do this first one with enough fuel to bail out and go again yeah and as we joined
00:35:44lando there on that long run to the first corner where he made the mistake the last time
00:35:48i always think a big long straight like here in monza it's a bit like in tennis when the ball's
00:35:54coming up high and you've got just got to smash it and you see professionals make a mistake because
00:35:59they've overthought it it becomes so much harder doesn't it is this the same in tennis as it is
00:36:05in formula one so you're saying you want to be driving on instinct rather than thought yeah all right
00:36:11yeah yeah whenever i thought about it that's when it all would be tong but uh yeah the very best are
00:36:19just instinctively brilliant lando norris with a 26-5 through the first sector he's the only one out
00:36:26there at the moment who is attacking everyone else is thinking about prep laps red bulls emerging
00:36:32and he's only eight hundredths of a second up on the 10th place man oliver bearman problem is i think
00:36:37he's now driving cautiously so i think he's obviously had the mistake he's now second guessing
00:36:42himself and he's thinking just get one on the board but he's got to stay on this set of tires now he
00:36:47will have another chance as we heard will joseph to do a cool lap and a push again but everyone else
00:36:51is in the pits or leaving on a new set of soft tires we've got to jump right up where does this put
00:36:56the driver second in the world championship it is seventh position for norris that's not enough
00:37:01i don't think that's going to be enough antonelli leaving the pits hamilton's got a lot of potential
00:37:05to try and improve science in the williams has been quick i'm not sure that's a hydration drink in
00:37:12that particular bottle he's like gulp okay right he might be under pressure here
00:37:17so bearman is close to science his time antonelli is going very nicely he's being compared
00:37:25to maxa staffan out front norris is done he's not improved the first sector so
00:37:30if enough drivers can improve he's going to be in trouble so lando norris is really at risk now he
00:37:35went to the first sector with a 39 zero there's a mistake in there for lando norris
00:37:40bearman puts norris to eighth position that's a great lap from ollie bearman under the pressure
00:37:45antonelli goes to second place strong from him norris to the brink now hamilton is in the drop zone
00:37:52alonso comes over the line he's in seventh position hamilton trying to improve and he will improve
00:37:58this is going to knock out lando norris he comes across the line michelle leclerc what can lewis
00:38:03hamilton do this is crucial for the world championship hamilton will be over the line
00:38:07in about 10 seconds time norris has enough time to go again has he got the fuel to was this the plan
00:38:15or is it a mistake so lewis hamilton can he stack up and demote lando norris out at the top 10 he gets
00:38:23to eighth lewis hamilton does improve and lando norris is still pushing on holkenberg gets the 12th
00:38:29position 13 seconds on the clock last chance saloon for lando norris he starts to fly so he's got
00:38:35enough fuel to do it i wonder if this was the plan but it is putting him under huge pressure with the
00:38:41title at stake yeah but great slipstream down to the first chicane so will that be enough to just give
00:38:47him a little bit of wriggle room he's got oscar piastri is the car directly in front of him he goes
00:38:53past him into the roger chicane the second chicane alex album personal best sector one sector two trying
00:38:59to beat the benchmark of oliver bearman left-hand side of your screen norris scrambling to try and make
00:39:04the top 10 shootout he's done a good first sector he was right up to the gravel there's no chance
00:39:09taken on this one for lando only 14th position for alexander alban and the friday promise for
00:39:15williams fades away norris looking for a clean lap to get through oliver bearman is the driver that
00:39:22he's being compared to and he's up but he's only up by two hundredths of a second he's already had the
00:39:28go on brand new tires so this tire is now starting to get hot at the end of the lap but he is heading to
00:39:33the corner where he has been mighty he's got cars in front will they be aware they peel out of the
00:39:37way this is not ideal but will it be enough he has been so good through the parabolica all weekend long
00:39:44is it good enough for the top 10 lando norris fights his way through and finds fifth position
00:39:52man did he need that did you hear the way he attacked the entry to the parabolica there that
00:39:58was no chance taken banging it down another gear getting it to fifth getting the rotation there
00:40:03and a short shift back to sick for the acceleration the traction zone on the way out so so close
00:40:10bearman holkenberg signs alban and ocon are out
00:40:16the atmosphere here is superb as we get a green light at the end of the pit lane this is a magical
00:40:37moment in many ways of the fastest point in the grand prix weekend is just about to happen
00:40:44this is where it went wrong on the previous effort for lando norris he makes the first chicane trying
00:40:49to give himself the foundation of run one being ultra competitive and then improve he gets rid of a
00:40:55tear-off as he goes through curva grande but roger chicane is next for the man 34 points back
00:41:02in the world championship this is where mclaren have been so strong so far through the weekend
00:41:07he's bouncing a lot over that second apex curve i thought he was going to spit him off towards the
00:41:11gravel on the exit on this one and the last one but he's kept it neat and tidy obviously feeling like
00:41:15he can get closer and over that curve in the de la rogge this is the tricky lesmo too and he punches
00:41:21out of there quite nicely as well the first sector is never particularly good for mclaren he has three
00:41:26slightly quicker but that will get beaten by probably a few of them antinelli is not that far
00:41:33away from the mixer maybe about half a tenth or so down on russell it's only really one big stop isn't
00:41:39it yeah and so leclair's gone three tenths quicker than norris in the first sector but the ferrari will
00:41:44struggle in the middle part of the lap piastri's going quicker again in the middle than norris this is
00:41:48a good lap from oscar piastri piastri who loves dialing it up when it counts and it counts right
00:41:54now q3 run one time to beat is a 19-4 for lando norris antonelli in the silver of mercedes in front
00:42:04of the sea of red he finds himself two tenths back compared to the mclaren here's the championship
00:42:09leader across the line and piastri has done it again by an enormous margin but charlotte clare is in
00:42:16this fight as well first up though is george russell he's a tenth of a second away from oscar
00:42:21piastri hamilton is the fastest of anyone so far in the first sector but it's charl mclaren across the
00:42:27line and he's faster than oscar piastri the red roar begins lewis hamilton has a five place penalty
00:42:35but let's just look at the lap time right now hamilton to the line a tenth of a second away
00:42:42ferrari back in the mix on the timing page at least they're first and third what about max
00:42:48verstappen's still going really quickly as well also trimmed out on downforce and it's working right
00:42:52now in q3 up to the line for max we've got verstappen and bortoletto still setting lap times
00:42:58verstappen across the line oh he's taken it away by eight hundredths of a second vintage vintage
00:43:04qualifying at monza and it's only run one look at that timing page verstappen leclerc piastri
00:43:11hamilton russell bortoletto norris in seventh half a second off antonelli sunoda and alonso it's
00:43:19anyone's game but at the front what tactics will ferrari use will red bull repeat what we've seen
00:43:26again so important that sunoda got through and to place it in context you can sunoda is only in q3
00:43:32for the second time in 10 races so this was vital that yuki got through and he's playing the team
00:43:37game a driver fighting for that seat next year in formula one yeah red bull are ruthless with it
00:43:42they have been through all of this era really with verstappen and his teammates that have struggled to
00:43:46match up but they have at times played the team game and it's been useful for for verstappen already
00:43:52there ferrari have a chance to do it mclaren don't there's no way either driver will help the other
00:43:57one and that's the the weapon that ferrari and rebel can can dangle over them the mclaren are
00:44:03in this position where the drivers are competing against each other and norris for the championship
00:44:07here has got to deliver one of his best ever laps yeah it just feels that the pressure has been
00:44:12building on lando through this session it hasn't run smoothly and it's quite difficult isn't it to
00:44:18sort of itch or sketch your brain rewind everything before going out for what is the final run your final
00:44:25opportunity so first time around norris was the first car in the in the queue this time he's out
00:44:31behind piastri so he can now choose if he wants a distance slipstream from from oscar oscar had a
00:44:37little bit on the first run from uh from kimmy antonelli who was out on a used tyre so they have
00:44:42flipped it around it's like ferrari haven't no wrong way around they've got the clare out first and
00:44:48then hamilton yeah so they're not going to use hamilton to help the clare leclair if he wants to take pole
00:44:53is going to have to do it on his own interesting questions for fred for sir if they stick to this
00:44:59sometimes you see things swap around later on but remember you've got lauren mech he's there he's not
00:45:06been team principal long red bull racing has had that success with the sprint race back in spa but
00:45:13a tough run not on the podium for four races for max of staff and put that right one week ago
00:45:19the staff is also nowhere near sunoda for this run yuki's the first car out the staff is just
00:45:24through the first chicane now as sunoda's coming through towards oscari so the first run maybe there
00:45:30was a bit of help there's not going to be on this second run and the track should be getting better
00:45:34and better yeah last guy out or last two cars out the two mercedes antonelli just out of the first
00:45:41chicane followed by russell we got the softs on is that right safe um i thought i wanted a mediums
00:45:51overruled for george russell and he said he wanted the medium tires so whatever reason that mercedes
00:45:57working well on that compounded tire the theoretically fastest tire is the c5 soft look that's that's
00:46:05i'm completely sort of flummoxed there because they say you know the communication between the
00:46:13race driver and the engineer it that is a sort of it has to be an unbreakable bond how could they have
00:46:19misunderstood what tire is going on the car what a stuff up driver wants the tire that he thinks is
00:46:24best that he's more comfortable with and he hasn't got that he was two tenths of a second away charlotte
00:46:29claire looking for a 28th career pole position and a third at monza he's heading to the second
00:46:36chicane he is five hundredths away from max verstappen it's going to be fine margins we could even see
00:46:43a track record around this place hamilton is not too far away when you compare but it wasn't the
00:46:50personal best can ferrari find more speed in the final corners charlotte claire's definitely pushing
00:46:55to the edge hamilton's actually five seconds and slip streaming off leclerc at this point as well
00:47:00so he's got a slightly better first sector leclerc a little bit far away probably from yuki tsunoda
00:47:05ahead and he's not putting it together that is where you'd expect him to struggle they have trimmed out
00:47:10that ferrari can he come back in the high speed stuff personal best for lewis hamilton piastri's first
00:47:15sector is not good his middle sector is the quickest of anyone though norris also quit through the first
00:47:19sector has verstappen done enough on run number one can they save their best until last
00:47:25piastri bringing the heat can charlotte claire improve at the end no he misses out miles off
00:47:31that first effort it's lewis hamilton coming across the line now he doesn't improve either
00:47:37oscar piastri is the driver that we'll be focusing on he's in the background we're on board with him
00:47:41championship leader misses out by five hundredths of a second and now lando norris is the door ajar
00:47:48it is pole position for norris but wait for verstappen's reply he's going to be last over the line
00:47:55they're celebrating at mclaren but lando norris has been beaten by max verstappen by seven hundredths of
00:48:03a second it was piastri then it was norris then it was verstappen verstappen has the fastest time
00:48:09antonelli gets to seventh george russell did not get the tire that he wanted and round the final
00:48:16corner for the final time russell over the line where does he put his mercedes he doesn't improve
00:48:21his time and it will be verstappen on pole position for the italian grand prix he's beaten lando norris
00:48:29by seven hundredths of a second in a great battle all the way to the end that's the all-time red bull
00:48:35record for the number of poles he's 45th and an outstanding one when he needed it max verstappen
00:48:43doing the job once again his fifth pole of the season whole position max fantastic work
00:48:50yes guys yes that's unbelievable really really good job at the it worked out relax there it's all good
00:49:03he is relaxed it is all good somehow it's like they don't have the same pressure on them of course
00:49:10that the mclaren boys do they're battling for that world championship but it just feels that although
00:49:15it was a great comeback from lando he put himself on the back foot max verstappen scoring red bulls
00:49:21108th pole position in formula one that takes them past lotus for fifth all time the famous lotus team
00:49:28winning so many titles in the 60s and the 70s and max verstappen getting that team record and
00:49:38elevating red bulls standing in the all-time list a classic again max verstappen's fifth pole position
00:49:45of the year the joint most and when it comes to saturday he has provided a magical moment at monza
00:49:52once again we wondered where ferrari would be in the end fourth and fifth when it came to the end of
00:49:58q3 lewis hamilton will have that grid drop george russell didn't get the tire that he wanted
00:50:02kimmy antonelli will find himself up in sixth position and what might have been for ferrari
00:50:08it's gabriel bortoletto in eighth fernando alonso in ninth nuki sunoda will line up in tenth place
00:50:14niko rosberg is ready to speak to the top three oscar that's p3 in the end i'm sure not exactly what
00:50:23you're hoping for what went wrong there um nothing major um turn one was a little bit average but um
00:50:32the rest of the lab all felt felt pretty tidy so um you know i feel like i i executed a pretty good
00:50:38session um you know built up to it a little bit at the start and found found my feet but um i think
00:50:44it's just been incredibly tight this weekend um you know max and red bull looked quick this weekend
00:50:49i mean to be honest a lot of teams looked quick it's not been uh uh quite as comfortable for us
00:50:54so um yeah the result's not a big surprise but um yeah obviously would have loved to be a little bit
00:50:59further up is there a change now for you that you have such a huge points lead in the championship it
00:51:03is quite big like do you start to think about that in such qualifyings where you're like okay you know
00:51:07what third place damage limitation lando is only second do those thoughts start to come to you now
00:51:12uh no i mean when you're on the lap you're going for it and you're going for pole um you don't know
00:51:18what anyone else is going to be able to pull off so um in the moment yes you're you're going flat out
00:51:24i think you know obviously afterwards um it creeps in a little bit but you know there's still a long
00:51:30way to go and um i'll try and make up some spots tomorrow because i'd like a few more wins if i can
00:51:35it's nice to see that there's a little bit of championship thoughts starting to creep in from
00:51:38time to time um tomorrow's race your car is fast but lando seemed to be quite a lot quicker in race
00:51:45practice on friday are you going to be able to find that speed as well tomorrow um i mean i don't
00:51:50think it looked too bad from where i was i think um you know it's been uh just a little bit trickier
00:51:56for us in general obviously i missed fp1 as well so that was kind of my first first long run and
00:52:01um you know the race is always very different so um i'm pretty confident tomorrow thank you oscar
00:52:06still all to play for tomorrow even from third thank you lando i think that looked like a pretty
00:52:13great lap at the end there are you shocked that max could beat you to it no no no he's been uh max
00:52:19has been quick all weekend and uh it's never a surprise with max so uh no i mean i was it was
00:52:26quite a session for me just up and down and uh too many mistakes here and there but uh to pull it
00:52:30out together on the last lap was uh i was pretty happy so i'm happy with p2 and is it still like
00:52:35a good feeling that you're in front of your championship rival so he's p3 is that then still
00:52:40kind of like damage limitation and still feels okay um i mean i'm always you know uh i always
00:52:47kind of give my result depending on how i drove today so um i feel like i didn't do the best of jobs
00:52:52but to end up p2 i was so happy with so let's say good things and bad things uh p2 is still not a
00:52:57bad position to be off the line and i mean i want to be ahead of everyone uh that includes you know
00:53:02the my championship contenders and oscar so um yeah no i'm still a good position for tomorrow
00:53:07and excited for the race so on friday you had like super awesome race pace does that give you hope for
00:53:13tomorrow you think you're going to be able to carry that over i mean our race for sunday is normally
00:53:17our strength um but yeah to get past max i'm sure it's going to be a big challenge but uh we'll we'll
00:53:24see um their pace was also very strong if you see the end of the stint they're doing the same lap
00:53:28times as us so uh you know i don't expect any any magical things and we have some ferraris behind
00:53:33you i'm sure we're going to want to come come through as quickly as possible so it's a long
00:53:37race so many things can happen and we'll see what we can do all right i hope you get that win tomorrow
00:53:41to keep that championship fully alive thank you thank you max what an incredible q3 in the end there
00:53:48was that the usual max verstappen magic i try um but i think around here you know with the low
00:53:54down for us it's always very difficult to nail the lap uh you know under braking is easy to make
00:53:58mistakes also but uh yeah q3 felt good happy with the laps and of course to be uh to be on pole here
00:54:04for us also is fantastic uh you know the car's been working a lot better the whole weekend
00:54:08and uh yeah to be able to fight for pole um yeah very happy with that did you actually think it was
00:54:14possible going into qualifying it was tight i mean we were still lacking a tiny amount we made some final
00:54:19changes which i think allowed me to to push a bit more and that's exactly what you need in qualifying
00:54:24so yeah for us it's a great moment and then take us into the race tomorrow you think you got enough
00:54:29there to also keep the mclarens behind yeah let's see i mean uh historically this season uh the race has
00:54:35always been a little bit more complicated for us but we're going to give it a you know everything we
00:54:39have i think that's the only thing that we can do and then we'll see what happens tomorrow cool well
00:54:44wishing you all the best thank you and uh hoping for an exciting race tomorrow and there you have
00:54:49it max verstappen reminding us all why he's a four-time world champion let's take a quick break on the
00:54:55other side red bull's new team principal lauren macchies kimmy antonelli and fred verser why didn't
00:55:00he give leclerc that toe we'll ask him don't go anywhere
00:55:18welcome back to monza max verstappen has taken the first big bite out of the weekend taking a shock
00:55:24poll lando will start second oscar third let's get things going with a chat with red bull's new team
00:55:29principal mr macchies lauren congratulations on your first pole position as team principal of red bull
00:55:36was that a surprising one for you you know the guys is such a great job you know if you if you think
00:55:42back to last year where where we were here as a team last year in monza it was one of the most
00:55:47difficult race of the year we know how circuit specific monza can be and and and they come back
00:55:52one year after uh with with having properly understood and fixed what was slowing us down
00:55:59about about a year ago so uh you know max did an incredible job the team i think was on the right
00:56:04pace to be able to fight for the pole from from friday onwards and and managed to build to build through
00:56:10that you know don't get me wrong as there is no margin six or seven cars could have uh done the
00:56:14pole today uh but but max have been doing uh you know what he what he knows how to do best and uh
00:56:19just did a magic lapse of the magic lapse and uh that's uh that's where we are with a very very
00:56:24tiny margin but in an important one for tomorrow yeah well it doesn't matter how big the margin you
00:56:28guys are the quickest there we saw uh landon orders there acknowledged that he always considered max
00:56:33would be in the hunt for pole we saw yuki do a strong get through to the top 10 was it ever a
00:56:38consideration to use him in that final run because he could have been used for the slipstream but in the end
00:56:43you didn't need it you know um we as you as you have seen we sent we sent uh yuki first uh in in
00:56:49q3 nobody wants to be first on track and and we were always hoping that the car will will go out
00:56:54before him to also give him a chance uh in q3 did a very good job in q1 a very very good job in q2
00:57:00uh but somebody has to go first and uh and and and he was he was running with no slipstream there and
00:57:05and max was in the pack he has managed his gap but he has also shown quite a few times during quality that
00:57:10uh even in in isolation you know even the clean lap sometimes was giving you back as nearly as much
00:57:16as what the tour was doing and and it went uh it's fall on the right side of the fence what what's your
00:57:21overview on uh yuki's role and performance in the team right now how do you think he's doing
00:57:27you know i think he's on a on a on a very uh substantial improvement race after race you know
00:57:33i just look back to the last three four races spa was his best qualifying of the season with us
00:57:38uh budapest was the smallest gap he has ever had to max in qualifying zandvoorty was back in the
00:57:44points after seven race without the point and here if you look at q1 and q2 you know it was a couple
00:57:48of tens from from max put the car in q3 uh perhaps i'm sure he wanted more in q3 but i think
00:57:54he's improving step by step so throwing it forward to tomorrow the mclarens they can't afford to take a
00:57:59risk with max so is that this is a superpower tomorrow max can try and convert that pole of course into a victory
00:58:06you know it's probably fair to say that uh yes the uh the mclaren advantage we we normally see in
00:58:12qualifying it normally increase further in the race so we are we are well aware that uh tomorrow is a
00:58:19is another battle uh we we we are trying every race to try to see how we can um um how we can decrease
00:58:26that that disadvantage that we tend to get from qualifying to race and tomorrow will be another answer for us
00:58:32uh on that the guys are working very hard in the background with max with yuki and uh let's see
00:58:37if we have enough space to resist tomorrow this was the bad news lauren which you're probably aware
00:58:43of is the last five pole sitters of the monza grand prix have not gone on to take the checkered flag
00:58:49you're aware of that yes no i was not aware of that but you guys always reminding us the good stats
00:58:55look without being superstitious i think there is a lot of answers we are looking for as a team
00:59:01tomorrow on a track like that against a very strong competition not only mclaren's ferrari was strong
00:59:07all weekend they are not going to disappear tomorrow they are going to be very strong in race space
00:59:11probably mercedes as well so i think you will see a fight between five or six cars uh for the win
00:59:17last quick one uh you're the boss of all of this that we can see behind us how are you finding your
00:59:22time at red bull being the team principal the big boss the truth is it's a it's a teamwork so uh it's an
00:59:27incredible team uh is today is a good example of the character of the team of how they fight back
00:59:33whenever they uh they get into a difficulty and you know it's uh as we say it's a privilege to be
00:59:38with these teams we are we are working all together as tight as possible and and yes it's nice to have
00:59:43this side of positive sign in the journey lauren congratulations good luck tomorrow thank you thank
00:59:47you sir cheers man all right let's hear from some more drivers starting with charlaclaire
00:59:51i hate to say perfect and i think nobody ever does a perfect lap but i think it was as close as
00:59:58what i would want to do during a qualifying lap and i knew that it would be very difficult to
01:00:02beat that attempt on the second time lap which i didn't um so yeah when i saw that max went in front
01:00:09i knew that most of the time you do the best lap on the second lap in q3 and you take all the risks there
01:00:15i knew i had taken all the risks in the first run wanted to go for a bit more in the second run but
01:00:20didn't work out so i have no regrets because i think that uh yeah that's the place we could have
01:00:26done in the best possible case um but of course when when you see that you are p1 once crossing the
01:00:32finish line you believe in it but uh yeah yeah reality uh catched us back well it was looking pretty
01:00:41good at one point uh obviously quick it's in q1 i was pretty happy on those mediums q2 wasn't too bad either
01:00:48but we we just got slower as the session progressed so that was a real shame we definitely ended up
01:00:54performing q3 i'm really really happy with the progress that we've made um particularly like
01:01:00on my side of the garage um it's definitely been a lot more solid last last week but even more so this
01:01:05weekend and uh i've been right there it's within uh within within a within a tenth so um yeah just got
01:01:11to keep working on it it's seeing progress and it's been amazing being here and as a ferrari driver it's
01:01:16pretty i can't even find the worst for it to be honest it's the fans here are really beautiful
01:01:22the the energy since wednesday uh they've turned up in the thousands already for this event we had in
01:01:28in the city in milan and then here when you leave it when you leave the garage when you get down to
01:01:33turn one you see him on the left and the right and throughout the hole you see red just red so
01:01:38i don't know what's possible tomorrow but i've got to find my way to wiggle looking my way through
01:01:43the tofosi lifting the champs spirits they're fantastic good to see let's take a quick break
01:01:49on the other side we'll talk to lewis's boss fred vasur and kimmy antonelli see you in a bit
01:02:05uh welcome back to monza where max verstappen has taken a shock pole lando norris second oscar
01:02:13piastri third fred vasur joins us right now leclerc fourth hamilton fifth apply the penalties
01:02:19tenth how is that for you oh it's a mixed feeling because i think at one stage that we are expecting
01:02:26better than p4 p5 at the beginning of the q3 but uh we have to keep in mind that it's mega tight
01:02:32uh at one stage of the quality i don't know don't remember if it was q1 or q2 lando was almost out it
01:02:38mean that uh it is like it is that uh now we have to be focused on tomorrow starting from before it's
01:02:46possible we did it last year the charts started exactly that it means that we have to be focused
01:02:51on ourselves on the approach of the race on the tire management on the strategy but the the pace is
01:02:57there it's not because you are 100 behind someone that you are slower or whatever we are into the
01:03:02group and let's see tomorrow so all all focus on tomorrow but we're in commentary and we're always
01:03:07trying to allow our audience to be inside the thoughts of a team so was there any thought to
01:03:12use the drivers in a slipstream situation we've seen it in the past but this year less across all
01:03:17the teams yeah first because i think the the tire preparation is much more important it means that
01:03:22if you start to play with the slipstream to try to get to do a copy paste of your pace with someone
01:03:28you are less focused on on your tires and the preparation of your players the second one is
01:03:33that with the minimum maximum lap time that we have into the regulation you can easily manage to start
01:03:38three four seconds behind someone and i think it's uh it's what charles did with you know the abm and
01:03:44also because it's not that the second car will had to start from the back of the grid the second
01:03:48start a second car at the five places penalty and we didn't want to sacrifice completely one car
01:03:53because the the option is to not do the quality and just do the slipstream but this is a bit harsh
01:04:00what is it about monza i mean you perform so well here so consistently well
01:04:06it's not a matter of motivation if it's what you have in mind it's a honesty that we are doing the best
01:04:12and on every single track for sure that uh the week in in monza and i'm thinking about lewis i think
01:04:19it was a very positive week for him because that uh he had a mega warm welcome uh sorry the tifosi all
01:04:26the week in milano and this gave him a very positive energy and i think for him it was very important
01:04:33then the preparation for sure we are doing the best but we will do also the best for baku next week and
01:04:37that it's not that uh you can't do something special but i think all this mood all this positive
01:04:43energy is also for the drivers and this is helping them you must be very happy that lewis is happy
01:04:48because you made some comments in the press this week that you might have underestimated the magnitude
01:04:53of the move from mercedes to ferrari so he's in a good place this weekend oh yeah but i think we are
01:05:00uh doing step by step and uh he had a very tough honestly the recovery in june july was good and
01:05:08we had two very difficult races like spa and budapest but more for circumstances than pace and uh
01:05:16and zandvoort was okay that for sure that the outcome was not good but uh all the pace all over
01:05:22the weekend he was fighting with uh with landau getting in your interview sorry
01:05:30he was fighting with george all the race and so that and i think he took the positive of this
01:05:36for sure that we want to score points and we want to finish races but i think from this kind of event
01:05:41when we had a very poor friday a good recovery very good teamwork and so it took uh really the positive
01:05:48and arriving in uh in monza with the older tifosi and so that it was another guy fred hope you have
01:05:54a great day tomorrow thanks for talking to us thank you thanks man cheers let's head over to ariana
01:06:00thank you very much steve i am here alongside kimmy antonelli kimmy p7 out there in qualifying talk to
01:06:08us about how you found it out on track i was uh you know was a clean qualifying finally after a
01:06:13difficult period on on that side so um you know it didn't start very well uh i was quite nervous going
01:06:20into qualifying because yesterday with the off in fp2 i kind of lost momentum and it felt like a new
01:06:26start uh this morning so it was not easy but uh happy with uh how i built the session last lap was not
01:06:33amazing because i struggled a little bit with the rear uh first part of the lap uh but uh yeah p7 and p6
01:06:40so for tomorrow yeah as you mentioned lining up p6 once hamilton's penalty is applied there
01:06:47in terms of looking ahead to the race tomorrow this is your best starting position since canada
01:06:51where you ended up on the podium how are you feeling when you look ahead to the race here in
01:06:56front of all these fans i mean driving here has been amazing uh so hopefully we can have a good race
01:07:01pace tomorrow and fight for you know probably a tough fight you know the pace of the guys in front is
01:07:06very strong and we seem a little bit slower on the straights compared especially red bull and ferrari
01:07:11so it's not gonna be easy but uh you know the race pace has been a strong point to be honest in the
01:07:17even in the past few races so hopefully it's gonna be the same tomorrow and we can use that to put on a
01:07:22fight it was a difficult weekend last time out in zanbot and as you mentioned yesterday with the
01:07:27off in practice as well you said you were nervous coming into qualifying today how important has it
01:07:31been to have that bounce back and to know you're lining up in that strong position tomorrow
01:07:35has been crucial i mean definitely this gives a big boost of confidence and uh you know it's uh
01:07:41especially because i felt a lot under pressure uh especially after the first run on medium i didn't
01:07:47feel great and i had to make a big step so it was not easy but really happy with with that and when
01:07:53you're driving around this circuit you must see so much support for yourself on the way into track as
01:07:58well how much is that home support and that home love really helping you it's been it's been amazing you
01:08:04know imola was a good lesson uh you know it's been an amazing weekend as well in imola but i didn't
01:08:09many things the best so you know this weekend i felt much more at ease and really embraced the cheer
01:08:14from the crowd so it's been amazing and that's why i'm really looking forward to tomorrow it is really
01:08:18special to see out there this season so far though it's been ups and downs as you've mentioned some
01:08:23highs and lows what has it been like this learning journey as a rookie and what sort of support are you
01:08:28getting from the team to help guide you i mean the the support from the team has been incredible
01:08:32you know especially in the difficult moments they've always been there so you know as we had
01:08:37quite a difficult period uh so happy now to to find uh to start seeing the light again at the end of
01:08:44the tunnel uh but hopefully tomorrow we can do a good result and get some good points because
01:08:50obviously we're fighting for p2 in the championship and it's important for the team so i'm ready to give my
01:08:55best oh fingers crossed it's nice to see you smiling again kimmy thank you so much for joining
01:09:00us let's now head over to alex with the starting grid for tomorrow it's the fastest lap in formula
01:09:07one history for max estappen a 118 792 the fastest anyone has gone around monza the highest average speed
01:09:14at 164 miles per hour in formula one history for a qualifying lap lando norris missed out by seven
01:09:21hundredths of a second then it was championship leader piastri in third
01:09:24charlotte claire in fourth ahead of george russell in fifth and it was antonelli bortoleto
01:09:29alonso and sunoda lewis hamilton taking that five place grid penalty for failing to slow for double
01:09:34waved yellow flags at the previous race in the build-up to the grand prix in 10th the rest of
01:09:39the grid oliver beerman ahead of niko hulkenberg then it's signs ahead of teammate alban estepen ocon in
01:09:4515th then it's hadjar stroll colopinto and gasly last on the grid liam lawson
01:09:51yeah not the uh perfect day for mclaren but p2 p3 not to be sniffed at dc
01:09:58no i think that's that's strong especially when we know the long run to that first corner
01:10:04can mean that sometimes being on the pole is not the best position
01:10:07but i think there'll be a big sigh of relief from the lando side of the garage because he had that
01:10:12little wobble in the middle part of qualifying and it put him on the back foot q2 the wheels
01:10:17nearly came off didn't they i mean he literally came off the track uh heaping massive amounts of
01:10:21pressure on him but he did deliver when it mattered the most but for a second i thought it's done it's
01:10:26over yeah he's looked like he did in zamfort as if he's had a little bit of a single lap advantage
01:10:31over oscar oscar was able to turn that around there and that final lap in zamfort but not here today
01:10:36but again i don't think given how many races that are left and given the nature of this racetrack
01:10:41either of them will be unhappy with that qualifying and maybe actually for oscar it's an opportunity to
01:10:46sit back and watch what happens between max and lando on the run to the first chicane it is a great
01:10:50opportunity for lando norris to take a little nibble at that 34 point lead uh to oscar piastri though
01:10:56isn't it oscar's not going to want to give him that he's not and actually that's where max might come
01:11:01into play to help lando and as much that the underlying pace of that mclaren better use in its tires
01:11:06better tire management overall and that's the thing that rebel are still trying to understand
01:11:12are they going to do it in what we believe the weather conditions will be very similar tomorrow
01:11:15as we saw today so that means warm and that's going to then push the old tire temps especially
01:11:20on full fuel through the roof um if i can uh go to a little afield for a second i just wanted to
01:11:26tip the cap to a botoletto p6 we don't sing this guy's praises enough he's just quietly
01:11:32getting on with it being brilliant all the time now yeah he's uh rookie f2 champion coming against
01:11:39hulkenberg who we know is very good at single lap pace but in the last several races he's had the
01:11:44advantage and then talking with jonathan wheatley off camera he's like look this guy's the real deal
01:11:49if he continues in this trajectory then uh they are very very happy with uh the signing here's the
01:11:55good news as well dc we mentioned it to uh lauren earlier maybe not so much good news for lauren but
01:11:59the last five poles here at monza have not been converted which means don't know who's going to
01:12:04win this thing we don't and we had leclerc go from fourth to winning this grand prix and single stop i
01:12:09believe last year so this is a this is definitely a chess match of a of a race to start with but before
01:12:15you can start playing chess you've got to get through that first chicane terribly exciting times
01:12:20ahead you can watch the whole thing live on sky sports f1 tomorrow or you can join us right here on
01:12:24channel four at 6 30 in the pm don't miss it's going to be a cracker and it will be verstappen
01:12:32on pole position for the italian grand prix he's beaten lando norris by seven hundredths of a second
01:12:42yes guys so good
