00:00:01Oh, what a goal!
00:00:02Oh, look at that!
00:00:03Absolutely phenomenal!
00:00:05Rooney O'Hall!
00:00:08Welcome to Match of the Dead.
00:00:30Evening, just like an Ashley Williams tackle, we're a bit late this evening.
00:00:54But hopefully it's worth the wait with eight games on the way, shape given here as well.
00:00:59First, a fourth straight London derby to start the season for Chelsea,
00:01:03who were going for a third straight win when they went to Brentford.
00:01:06Steve Wilson was at this one.
00:01:10Separated by Hammersmith and Chiswick, around six miles as the crow flies,
00:01:14or an hour's drive if you're unlucky.
00:01:16Meetings between Brentford and Chelsea were scarce until recently,
00:01:20but Chelsea haven't lost a game on Brentford soil since 1938.
00:01:25Two changes to the Brentford 11, which lost late on at Sunderland,
00:01:29and a change of formation.
00:01:31Mikel Damsgaard is ill, big blow that.
00:01:33Matthias Jensen comes in.
00:01:35Watara drops to the bench, and Ethan Pinnock starts in a back five.
00:01:39Chelsea make four changes to the side which beat Fulham.
00:01:43De Laap, Esteval, Cucurella and Gusto are out.
00:01:46So in comes Fofana, Harto Gittins and Buoninote for a Chelsea debut.
00:01:55Brentford have lost two of their opening three Premier League games for the first time.
00:02:01If he controls that, oh, he's done absolutely brilliantly.
00:02:05Here's Shada, Shada!
00:02:08What a fabulous touch from Igor Thiago that was.
00:02:11He absolutely meant that, and he executed it perfectly.
00:02:15Shada with the opportunity, which was a little bit smothered by Tosin.
00:02:20He's 45 today, Keith Andrews.
00:02:23Happy or not?
00:02:25Oh, given away by Chalabar, and he's lucky.
00:02:29The army that couldn't take it in his stride.
00:02:32Enzo Fernandes.
00:02:34Here's Pedro Neto.
00:02:36Little clip ball, looks promising.
00:02:39Very good defending by Kayode, that.
00:02:43Play on.
00:02:44Henderson.
00:02:46Now, if that reaches Shada, he's in.
00:02:48It's a brilliant ball.
00:02:49Kevin Shada for Brentford.
00:02:52And into the net!
00:02:54Brentford in front.
00:02:59Little deflection, I think, on the Shada.
00:03:03Effort flicked off Tosin.
00:03:05But what a pass from Henderson.
00:03:09From one end of the pitch to the other,
00:03:12with one brilliantly judged pass here by Jordan Henderson.
00:03:19Fabulous ball.
00:03:21There's definitely a deflection off Tosin, which didn't help Robert Sanchez.
00:03:28It's Brentford one, Chelsea nil.
00:03:30Well, to some degree, you would say that the goal has gone against the run of play, but Chelsea didn't create a whole host of opportunities for all their possession.
00:03:41Still time, though.
00:03:42Still time, though.
00:03:43That's beautifully done.
00:03:44Buonanotte wriggling into the penalty area.
00:03:46And that's deflected on its way wide from Enzo Fernandes.
00:03:50They nearly found a way here.
00:03:53Buonanotte to Enzo Fernandes.
00:03:57Enzo Fernandes behind for this corner, which will be pretty close to being the last action of the first half.
00:04:05Enzo Fernandes delivery.
00:04:06It's come off some woodwork.
00:04:09Hooked out by Jensen.
00:04:10Well, here's how the ball ended up hitting the Brentford post, direct from Enzo Fernandes' corner.
00:04:21So Enzo Marescu is making a triple change at half-time.
00:04:26Quite a lively first five minutes in this second half.
00:04:29Pedro Neto squeezing it through.
00:04:31Somehow it reached Tyreek George.
00:04:34George goes for goal, and it's pushed away by Keller.
00:04:38Brentford thought there should have been an offside flag here.
00:04:41And I suspect Coyote was playing him on, and Keller has made a good save.
00:04:50Shada.
00:04:52Yarmiluk.
00:04:53Yarmiluk.
00:04:58Enzo Fernandes.
00:04:59Casado.
00:05:01João Pedro.
00:05:02Lovely little pirouette.
00:05:03And a smashing ball as well.
00:05:05Gittens.
00:05:07Pedro Neto.
00:05:08Tyreek George.
00:05:09In the boxes.
00:05:10Cucurella.
00:05:11And Keller has there.
00:05:14Lovely Chelsea counter that.
00:05:17Lovely weight on that pass.
00:05:21Cucurella took it up.
00:05:23And tested Kelleher, but not enough.
00:05:27They need a bit of respite, Brentford.
00:05:28They need a bit of respite, Brentford.
00:05:45Enzo Fernandes.
00:05:47Ball in.
00:05:48And Palmer!
00:05:49Well, he's taken that brilliantly.
00:05:57Cole Palmer.
00:05:59Back with a sweetly taken goal.
00:06:05The pressure built.
00:06:07And Chelsea's inspiration struck.
00:06:10Brentford won, Chelsea won.
00:06:12Only been on the pitch for six minutes.
00:06:15And that's the difference he's made.
00:06:19Here's Igor Thiago for Brentford.
00:06:24Matthias Jensen has managed to get onto that.
00:06:28Shada!
00:06:29And tipped around!
00:06:31Good save.
00:06:36Almost an instant riposte.
00:06:38Shada's hit had Sanchez really stretching.
00:06:46Rico Henry here.
00:06:47Now Pedro Neto might have an opportunity.
00:06:52Great acceleration from Pedro Neto.
00:06:55Still going.
00:06:56And Cole Palmer!
00:06:57What a great save!
00:07:00Palmer can't believe he hasn't scored.
00:07:03A big, big opportunity that's gone away from him here.
00:07:06Well, it's a very good save.
00:07:07But Palmer will be very disappointed that he gave Kelleher any chance at all.
00:07:14Well, that would and probably should have been his 50th career club goal.
00:07:20Slightly careless clearance that.
00:07:23Straight to Rhys James.
00:07:30Palmer.
00:07:32Garnaccio.
00:07:34Running at Hickey.
00:07:36Oh, he did well.
00:07:38The shot comes in from Caicedo.
00:07:41And he hammers Chelsea in front.
00:07:50Moises Caicedo for Chelsea.
00:07:55Well, it's pretty difficult to hit a football more sweetly than that.
00:07:58It was a great shot.
00:08:03Just the sheer precision and power.
00:08:06And Chelsea have come from behind to lead.
00:08:11Brentford one, Chelsea two.
00:08:16Henderson.
00:08:20Brentford throw.
00:08:21Well, Shada can launch them.
00:08:26And he will.
00:08:30And that could go anywhere.
00:08:32He's got in!
00:08:34Carvalho!
00:08:36Fabio Carvalho has equalised for Brentford.
00:08:40Three minutes into stoppage time.
00:08:43Well, it's a brilliant throw.
00:08:46Well, it's a brilliant throw.
00:08:48And long throws are a thing again.
00:08:51Flicked on.
00:08:55Chelsea didn't deal with it.
00:08:57And Fabio Carvalho tapped into the net.
00:09:03Brentford two.
00:09:05Chelsea two.
00:09:06Chelsea two.
00:09:12Keith, that will feel like a win.
00:09:14It will feel like a birthday present as well.
00:09:16It is your 45th birthday today.
00:09:18Great to get a point from that.
00:09:21Just delighted with the approach of the group, the character that we constantly show.
00:09:25Obviously, it came very, very late, the equaliser, but it's one I felt we truly deserved overall from the game in terms of the application, the quality of the players show at times.
00:09:37It's a shame, but it's what can happen.
00:09:40Probably we could, in that moment, we could manage a little bit better, you know, the moment of the game.
00:09:48But, yeah, at the end we conceded and we lost two points.
00:09:52Fabio, many congratulations.
00:09:53You've only been on the pitch, I think, for a couple of minutes.
00:09:56Nice way to finish the game.
00:09:58Yeah, unbelievable.
00:09:59Obviously, everyone likes a loss on the goal.
00:10:01And, yeah, I'm just grateful that I got here today.
00:10:04Is this going to be the season of the long throw?
00:10:05If it is, you've got two guys who know how to do it.
00:10:08Listen, it's been here for numerous years.
00:10:11It's not new to us, certain big Champions League games.
00:10:14It was quite prominent and I felt that would naturally just trickle down the footballing pyramid.
00:10:20And it's certainly been the case.
00:10:21I think there's a little bit of snobbery in the game around scenarios like that.
00:10:25But if the big boys do it, then it seems to be accepted.
00:10:28Bring back Dave Chaloner.
00:10:30And Rory Dilap.
00:10:32Always good to hear Dave Chaloner and Rory Dilap mention on match day.
00:10:36He is right though, isn't he?
00:10:37There is a snobbery in the game at the moment around the long throws.
00:10:41There have been a few articles this week that the long throw is back.
00:10:43And it certainly was for Brentford.
00:10:45Yeah, I think it's refreshing, Mark, sometimes.
00:10:47You know, it's all the coaches.
00:10:49It's the tactical geniuses they're supposed to be as well.
00:10:51But sometimes the old school, throw it in the mixer, cause a bit of carnage.
00:10:55And of course, they got a late equal edge today.
00:10:57And probably, as Keith says, deservedly so.
00:10:59And they had several, there were several sort of instances where Chelsea had warnings before the goal went in.
00:11:05And they didn't heed the warnings.
00:11:06You see, Coyote, as it says, on one side.
00:11:08Again, it's this sort of melee that created the near post.
00:11:10And a lot of the time, Mark, for me, it's not the first sort of connection.
00:11:13It's the second one.
00:11:14And you see, again, from the other side, it's the same guy.
00:11:18But look, if you keep it around the two number eights, you know, Jansen and Fernandes,
00:11:21watch the way Fernandes just runs off.
00:11:23If that's flicked on again, he's free around the back.
00:11:25So that's one warning.
00:11:26You could have picked a few more.
00:11:28Again, Shad on this side.
00:11:29Again, the near post area, there's defenders.
00:11:31There's attackers.
00:11:32Keep an eye on Garnacho and Lewis Potter around the back.
00:11:34Garnacho, I know, is an attacking player.
00:11:36But this is his warning, Mark.
00:11:37Karen is there.
00:11:38If that's flicked on, he's got a tapping around the back.
00:11:41Now, the last minute.
00:11:42Again, for me, you know what's coming.
00:11:44Ayers at the near post.
00:11:45I think Collins, a few more of the big guys at the near post.
00:11:47The defenders, there's keepers.
00:11:48But keep an eye on Garnacho and Carvalho at the back again.
00:11:51All Garnacho's got to do is mark his man.
00:11:53He doesn't score.
00:11:54He switches off.
00:11:55It's too late.
00:11:56And again, very rarely you score from the initial one.
00:11:59Look, he's spotted.
00:12:00His body shape's all wrong, Garnacho.
00:12:01He's watching the ball.
00:12:02He should be glued to Carvalho.
00:12:04Man to man.
00:12:05Get tight.
00:12:06Don't let your man score.
00:12:07He switches off.
00:12:08And then he reacts after when it's too late.
00:12:10It's in the back of the net.
00:12:11It's poor defending, but give Brentford great credit.
00:12:13Shea's pointing the man running off the man at the back post.
00:12:16Just from a centre-half point of view, how difficult are long throws to defend?
00:12:20It is weirdly difficult.
00:12:21I think I put it down to, you know, the day before a game, you always practice attacking corners,
00:12:27free kicks, defending corners, free kicks.
00:12:29Not often do you practice defending a long throw.
00:12:31So it seems simple as a goalkeeper, as a defender, just go and head it.
00:12:35But I think because it's coming in from a different angle, it creates a lot of chaos, as we're seeing here.
00:12:39And it's something that probably teams should be working on a little bit more, especially if you're playing against Brentford.
00:12:44Well, do you feel more panic as a goalkeeper from a long throw than a corner?
00:12:48Well, he used to have nightmares.
00:12:49He'd already had a lap at Stoke, that's for sure.
00:12:51Yeah, yeah.
00:12:52No, because that was a real rocket.
00:12:53And Robert Hoof and Ryan, you know, Shawcross would come up and pile over the keeper and get in.
00:12:58But again, they were sometimes scored direct from that first, which I talked about and sort of contradicting myself.
00:13:02But again, a lot of the times...
00:13:03Not for the first time.
00:13:04Not for the first time tonight, I might add.
00:13:06It's lots of times the second connection and the guys around the back, you know, people switching off, watching the ball.
00:13:11And he just drifts off and it's a goal.
00:13:13Steve said it in commentary.
00:13:15Chelsea had a lot of possession in that first half without really creating a lot of clear-cut chances.
00:13:19That's the substitutions in the second half and one in particular changed that.
00:13:23Yeah, and it was...
00:13:24Cole Palmer was the difference.
00:13:26He nearly stole the show for Chelsea.
00:13:28Buena Notte didn't really have an impact on the game.
00:13:31This man come on and his quality was shining throughout.
00:13:36He come on the 56th minute.
00:13:38Had five shots the most in the game.
00:13:41But you see, this is just clever play.
00:13:43He expects where it's going to drop.
00:13:45And let's not underestimate that finish at all.
00:13:47Because it's so tempting to just put your foot through that.
00:13:50But he just guides it into the corner on the half volley.
00:13:52That's the difference in quality that he's got.
00:13:55And then he started to do this.
00:13:56He started to get in between the lines of the midfield and the defensive line.
00:14:00Create problems for Brentford.
00:14:02He wins a free kick there.
00:14:04This is what he can do.
00:14:05Get himself out of a tight area.
00:14:06And that's a really clever pass to Pedro, who's clever as well.
00:14:09Nearly creates another goal.
00:14:11But this is that gap again where he gets himself into.
00:14:14It's difficult for defenders.
00:14:16You can see him checking his shoulder.
00:14:18Just as you think he's got another goal, that's probably down to good goalkeeping.
00:14:22He thinks he can just tuck it in the corner.
00:14:24Right at the end here, if you want it to fall to any player, it's him.
00:14:29And he probably doesn't connect with that one.
00:14:31He drifts, doesn't he?
00:14:32Yeah.
00:14:33He's so clever here.
00:14:34He just moves so slow across.
00:14:35But he knows where.
00:14:36He will always know where he wants to get it.
00:14:38Even if the ball's over on the left, he will then just pull out into an area
00:14:41where it can get circulated back to him.
00:14:43And that's how you find so much space.
00:14:45Right.
00:14:46Next, Ange Postacoglu's first game in charge of Nottingham Forest.
00:14:49It was at Arsenal, and Jonathan Pearce was there.
00:14:54Ange Postacoglu says he has nothing to prove.
00:14:57Certain Forest fans will need convincing, though.
00:15:00And this is a tough baptism.
00:15:02He's hardly met some of his new players
00:15:04and never beat Arsenal in charge of Tottenham.
00:15:06Hebrey Eze makes his full Gunners debut, as does another summer signing Christian Mosquera.
00:15:11And Martin Odegaard proved his full recovery from a shoulder injury,
00:15:15with two games for Norway in the break scoring in one.
00:15:17Saliba is sidelined after injury at Liverpool.
00:15:20Rice and Martinelli are rotated to the bench after exhausting international demands.
00:15:24And David Raya plays his 100th game for the club.
00:15:27111 days after naming his last Tottenham side.
00:15:31Ange Postacoglu is forced to make one change in his first Forest selection,
00:15:34with Ola Aina injuring a hamstring on international duty out for a while.
00:15:39Morata starts for the first time since May the 11th.
00:15:42Remains to be seen if the defence can cope with a Postacoglu highline.
00:15:46Milenkovic could only keep up with England's Harry Kane
00:15:48by holding him down in the week to get a red card.
00:15:51Arsenal have won the last six home games against Nottingham Forest in all competitions.
00:16:02It's a free-kick here to Arsenal.
00:16:04Now by Wood.
00:16:06On the back of Gabriel.
00:16:11Beauregard with the free-kick.
00:16:13Denton deliciously comes here, big shots, good save by Sels.
00:16:19Danger not over yet.
00:16:21But Sels rescues Nottingham Forest from the effort from Marino.
00:16:26Forest looked to break, Arsenal got a player down.
00:16:31It's a lovely save by Sels, made himself very big.
00:16:36Alert goalkeeping that.
00:16:38Arsenal will be concerned here.
00:16:42Hit the ground hard on that shoulder.
00:16:45It was a shoulder injury that forced him off against Leeds.
00:16:51Tried to go on.
00:16:53It's a real shame for them.
00:17:01Madueke.
00:17:03Brilliantly done.
00:17:04Still going, pushes it in, looks for Timber.
00:17:07Super defending.
00:17:08Murillo it was.
00:17:10Threw his body in when he needed to.
00:17:16Madueke with the corner.
00:17:17Just over half an hour play.
00:17:19Headed away by Wood.
00:17:20Slammed brilliantly in.
00:17:21What a goal by Martin Zubimendi to give Arsenal the lead.
00:17:26Well, they've chased him for a long, long time.
00:17:30They finally got him in the summer.
00:17:32This is a terrific strike.
00:17:36And Arsenal deservedly ahead.
00:17:38Might have just skimmed the head of Murillo on the way through.
00:17:42But it's Zubimendi's goal.
00:17:44That's a peach.
00:17:46How will Nottingham Forest under Ange Possacoglu react?
00:17:52Anderson.
00:17:53Spinning away from Zubimendi.
00:17:54Looking for Chris Wood.
00:17:55Gets it back.
00:17:56Seven minutes of stoppage time and out.
00:17:57Gibbs-White into Wood.
00:17:58Looks for the return.
00:17:59That's Forest's best move of the game.
00:18:00And Timber did just enough for Arsenal.
00:18:01To the frustration of Morgan Gibbs-White.
00:18:02Good move.
00:18:03Lovely little Gibbons.
00:18:04Gives-White.
00:18:05Gives the ball to Wood.
00:18:06Took it back.
00:18:07Annoyed with himself.
00:18:08That's a big chance of Forest.
00:18:09No further changes at half-time.
00:18:10That's to be said.
00:18:11He's able to take away from Zubimendi.
00:18:12He's able to take away from Zubimendi.
00:18:13Looking for Chris Wood.
00:18:14Gets it back.
00:18:15Seven minutes of stoppage time and out.
00:18:16Gives White into Wood.
00:18:17Look to the return.
00:18:18That's Forest's best move of the game.
00:18:19And Timber did just enough for Arsenal.
00:18:21To the frustration of Morgan Gibbs-White.
00:18:22Good move.
00:18:23Lovely little give-and-go.
00:18:24Lent the ball to Wood.
00:18:25Took it back.
00:18:27Annoyed with himself.
00:18:28That's a big chance of Forest.
00:18:30No further changes at half-time.
00:18:33It has to be said.
00:18:34The loss of their captain, Martin Odegaard, has severely hit Arsenal's rhythm.
00:18:41Played long by Calafiore.
00:18:43And Eze has got him behind here.
00:18:45Early cross in.
00:18:46Giocares.
00:18:47And Arsenal are ahead.
00:18:50And Victor Giocares gets his third Arsenal goal in his fourth appearance.
00:18:56The official timing was 46 seconds after the restart.
00:19:02It's a beautiful ballplay forward by Calafiore.
00:19:07Defender gets it all wrong, loses it in the air.
00:19:09It's a first-time cross.
00:19:11Perfect for a centre-forward.
00:19:12On a plate.
00:19:14Arsenal as it stands.
00:19:17Top of the Premier League.
00:19:19There's Calafiore.
00:19:20Just dwelt on it.
00:19:21And Anderson can get the challenge in.
00:19:22Anderson has stayed down.
00:19:23He rolled over on his ankle.
00:19:24And Doye chested towards goal by Wood.
00:19:25Brilliant improvisation.
00:19:26Hit the woodwork.
00:19:27That's a poor clearance.
00:19:28Redeemed by Mascara's challenge.
00:19:29To deny Hudson-Odoi and Forrest.
00:19:30Well, I daren't say freakishly nearly back in the game, because Chris Wood knew exactly what he was doing.
00:19:34Hands across the cockley's side very nearly back in the game.
00:19:57And Doye.
00:19:58And Doye.
00:19:59And Doye.
00:20:00Just too strong for him.
00:20:01Just too strong for him.
00:20:02Arsenal at the moment look very comfortable again.
00:20:15He's comfortable again, Jocheres, Eze making the run inside, well played.
00:20:22He's brought in Madueke, Jocheres on the outside now, a lot of hard work,
00:20:27when he did that, it's the woodwork!
00:20:29That is terrific centre-forward play, started it off,
00:20:33found Eze on the outside, cracked it against the post, he worked so hard for that.
00:20:45Are you Tottenham in disguise is the song on the lips of the Arsenal fans.
00:20:51Forrest in the same colours, managed by the former Tottenham boss.
00:20:57Well, he knew this was going to be a difficult opening game as head coach of Nottingham Forest.
00:21:03Lots of summer signings to integrate, he hasn't had any time with them at all.
00:21:10Going to be a yellow card here for Williams.
00:21:13Both Forrest left-backs today.
00:21:16Murato in the first half, Williams when he took over from him, have really struggled.
00:21:21I think in Noni Madueke's form, any full-back would have struggled.
00:21:29Quick free-kick taken, here's Rice.
00:21:32Tossard's first touch off the bench, look, delicious cross in, it's three!
00:21:36It's three and Zubamendi has a second!
00:21:39The first was an absolute bullet, and the second is a Martin Zubamendi header!
00:21:45Well, you don't see many of them.
00:21:48Not Jim Forrest well beaten.
00:21:50Tossard's first contribution off the bench was a lovely cross.
00:21:56Anans Prostokoglu has big work to do.
00:22:01It's an impish cross.
00:22:05It's a lovely header, little deflection off Williams, looped it up over the goalkeeper.
00:22:093-0 Arsenal, deservedly so.
00:22:13We had quite a lot of uncertainties.
00:22:14The boys, they've been out for ten days, travelling the world.
00:22:18Only one day to prepare the match without an early kick-off.
00:22:21Uncertainty about what the opposition was going to do.
00:22:23And even with those conditions, the team, I think, performed really well.
00:22:26A lot of new relationship on the pitch that you can start to see how they flourish.
00:22:31And, yeah, three goals, a clean sheet, three points.
00:22:34So overall, very positive.
00:22:35Yeah, I thought the players gave everything they could.
00:22:38You know, they tried, they had the right kind of endeavour.
00:22:42I think the second goal, you know, sort of pushed the game away from us.
00:22:47But, you know, it's been a really disruptive week for the players.
00:22:52You can only understand and, you know, try to sort of keep things really simple this week.
00:22:57We've only had one training session together.
00:22:59But, yeah, hopefully from now on we can sort of start betting in some of the principles we need to.
00:23:04Great combinations in the wide positions.
00:23:05Both wide players played very well.
00:23:07Both of them, I think, they were terrific.
00:23:09A real threat with their own qualities.
00:23:10So different in the way that they create danger, threat and unpredictability to the opponent.
00:23:15But very pleased.
00:23:16As he's tricky, isn't he?
00:23:17Maduweke is like an old-fashioned winger, really bang goes for him.
00:23:20Yeah, that's what I said, they are very different.
00:23:22We need to use them because it will require different profiles around them as well
00:23:26to maximise the qualities as they have.
00:23:28But they are both in a good moment.
00:23:30Very direct.
00:23:31Is that what Mikel tells you to be direct?
00:23:34Just take them on, take them on, take them on.
00:23:36That's the only way I really know how to play, you know, to be positive every time I get the ball.
00:23:41Try and find my teammates and, yeah, the job of a winger is to go past the full-back
00:23:46and try and create as much as possible.
00:23:47So that's what I try and do every time I step on the pitch.
00:23:50Well, Artesi eulogising about his wingers today.
00:23:54And in fact, the front three had real combinations, didn't they?
00:23:58Yeah, you can include Jokeres in that danger zone for Arsenal today.
00:24:04I thought that was really impressive from the start of the game.
00:24:07As we know, we know Eze's quality, but, you know, now we're seeing it in an Arsenal show.
00:24:11He can just go past his man with ease.
00:24:14The game seems so simple for him.
00:24:16I really liked Madueke today.
00:24:17He was so positive and aggressive.
00:24:19He gave Morata a tough, a tough game.
00:24:21He's just standing up.
00:24:22You can kind of see they're looking for Jokeres already in this early part of the season.
00:24:26But here he is.
00:24:27He's only got one thought in his mind.
00:24:28Can I get to that byline?
00:24:29Which is such a dangerous place for a defence when a player gets there and he cuts it back.
00:24:34It's unlucky.
00:24:35And then Eze, what I like about him is he can go inside or outside.
00:24:39So as a full-back, you're pretty stuck here.
00:24:41He's getting to the byline as well.
00:24:43Getting in there.
00:24:44Same man Jokeres is looking for.
00:24:45It must be a dream for a striker to play with.
00:24:47Then you get this just after half-time.
00:24:49One pretty simple ball.
00:24:51That's perfect.
00:24:52That's a perfect pass on the half-volley across where Jokeres gets his goal.
00:24:56And then this is just another example of the link-up play between the three of them.
00:25:01And already they're finding that bit of chemistry.
00:25:04You can see that they're enjoying playing with each other.
00:25:06Jokeres continues with his run.
00:25:09Madowiecki waits.
00:25:10Slips him in.
00:25:11Hits the post on that one.
00:25:13Madowiecki again now, second half.
00:25:15It's Nico Williams that's up against him.
00:25:17And just when you think maybe he's took too long and the move's over,
00:25:20I think he knows exactly what he's doing.
00:25:22Slows it up.
00:25:23Slows it up.
00:25:24Waits for Timba.
00:25:25And then Declan Rice.
00:25:26If he goes with his left foot there, it's probably another goal.
00:25:28Do you like the fact that they're slightly different as wingers, the two of them?
00:25:33Yeah.
00:25:34As Jonathan said in the interviews.
00:25:35Madowiecki is probably a bit more direct.
00:25:37Yeah.
00:25:38So they're similar and different, if that makes sense.
00:25:40Because they can both go past the player with ease.
00:25:43But Madowiecki seems to be a bit more aggressive in the way that he attacks his full-back.
00:25:47Whereas Ezi slows it down a little bit and just glides past full-backs.
00:25:51But both of them, I think for Jokeres, are going to be great this season.
00:25:54It was such a game where you really saw the benefits of Arsenal's transfer window today, wasn't it?
00:26:00Well, he has spent a lot.
00:26:01But the likes of, obviously, Saka Odair went off injured today.
00:26:04Saliba missing Jesus.
00:26:05Havertz is out as well.
00:26:06So, again, the strength and depth now, which they have, Champions League, Premier League.
00:26:11This is probably the strongest squad I think Arteta has had.
00:26:13It really has.
00:26:14This is their opportunity, I feel, to win the Premier League this season.
00:26:17And if he can keep the majority of this squad fit, you know, even Zubimendi today, scoring ahead of it,
00:26:22that's a rarity, isn't it?
00:26:23But two goals for him as well today.
00:26:24He's built a really strong squad.
00:26:26He must believe, and they must believe, this is their year.
00:26:28You see there on that graph, the first five of their most expensive signings this summer,
00:26:32all starting today.
00:26:34Just as far as Nottingham Forest are concerned and Ange Postacogli,
00:26:37this is not the game in which you judge what difference he is going to make.
00:26:41This is going to take time.
00:26:42No, I think today he was probably just done looking, really, just to see what he's got.
00:26:46He wants to be around, but he hasn't had enough time to judge them.
00:26:49But what we'll be interested is in three or four weeks,
00:26:51how he sets this Nottingham Forest team up.
00:26:53Does he go back to the way Tottenham started last season?
00:26:56Or is he a little bit more reserved of what the Forest team are used to,
00:26:59and how they've got a bit of glory recently?
00:27:01Right, West Ham secured a much-needed win at Nottingham Forest last time out.
00:27:06Tottenham, their visitors today.
00:27:07Simon Brotherton, watch this one.
00:27:11No half-and-half scarves and no half-measures either in this feisty London derby.
00:27:15West Ham make one change to the side that won at the city ground last time out.
00:27:19Crescensio Somerville starts with Nicholas Fulkrug on the bench.
00:27:22Mohamed Kudus returns to the London Stadium for the first time since leaving in the summer.
00:27:27New signing Xavi Simons makes his Tottenham debut.
00:27:30But Randall Kolomouane starts on the bench.
00:27:33Lucas Bergwahl and Matisse Tell both come in to the side.
00:27:37West Ham looking to get back on track at home after their disastrous performance and result against Chelsea here in their home match just a few weeks ago, beaten by five goals to one.
00:27:51Mohamed Kudus.
00:27:58Sarr going to ground a little too easily for Jared Gillett's liking.
00:28:02Here's Walker-Peters into Lucas Paqueta.
00:28:06Now Bowen and Walker-Peters continues his run.
00:28:14Good play.
00:28:15Mateus Fernandes.
00:28:16It's Lucas Paqueta!
00:28:17And it's just wide.
00:28:19Best move of the match in the early going there from West Ham.
00:28:26And Lucas Paqueta unable to guide the ball inside the far post.
00:28:32New look to the Tottenham board.
00:28:35Prominent among them there on the right.
00:28:36Vinay Venkatasham, the CEO.
00:28:39Romero.
00:28:44Inch perfect into Simons.
00:28:47Try and tee it up there and it takes a deflection.
00:28:54Off Max Killman and behind for a corner kick.
00:29:03Kudus with the corner.
00:29:04And headed home, it's Christian Romero!
00:29:07And it will not count, the referee says no.
00:29:10It will of course be checked.
00:29:15Walker-Peters going to ground as the ball came over.
00:29:18Romero planting the header home.
00:29:21Watch Fernandes here and Van der Ven.
00:29:25Van der Ven gives him a shove.
00:29:27And then Fernandes with a little push on Van der Ven,
00:29:30who then falls into Walker-Peters, who then falls over.
00:29:33But it was the nudge on Walker-Peters that the officials penalised.
00:29:38But it was interesting, there was a sort of movement from behind
00:29:41Mickey Van der Ven that nudged him forward.
00:29:48Somerville.
00:29:50Gets away from Pedro Poro.
00:29:54Fernandes back into Somerville.
00:29:56Keeps it clear of Palinha.
00:29:58Walker-Peters.
00:30:00Now Jared Bowen.
00:30:02And the deflection almost carried it into the gloves of Vicario.
00:30:09Van der Ven and Romero.
00:30:12Not quite in the manner that they intended.
00:30:15Get the ball back into the gloves of Vicario.
00:30:20Mattis Tell getting the better of Socek.
00:30:32Space for Lukas Bergwahl.
00:30:34Support from Jed Spence striding forward.
00:30:37And already at the start of the second half, Tottenham with another corner.
00:30:40Another corner.
00:30:49Xavi Simons.
00:30:50And the header from the far post from Pat Matassar.
00:30:55This time the goal will stand.
00:31:00And Tottenham have the lead that they thought they'd got during the first half.
00:31:04And Pat Matassar, who will be 23 tomorrow, celebrates with a goal in the London Derby.
00:31:12West Ham looking for a quick response.
00:31:23Fernandes sending it in.
00:31:24Bowen.
00:31:25And still.
00:31:26Oh, and it just evades Vicario, who manages to push it behind.
00:31:37Only the three relegated clubs last season won fewer points at home than West Ham.
00:31:44Behind again here at home.
00:31:49Head of forward by Spence only as far as Socek.
00:31:51Who in stretching for the ball catches his opponent.
00:31:54Straight red card.
00:31:57Jaupalinha on the end of it.
00:32:00And referee Gillett took about half a second to make his mind up there.
00:32:04He didn't like what he saw at all.
00:32:07And immediately brought out the red card.
00:32:10And Thomas Socek in stretching for a challenge there.
00:32:16Well, you can see where he caught his opponent.
00:32:20West Ham, a goal down and a man down.
00:32:24And we have 35 minutes still to play.
00:32:27The good news as well, by the way, Jaupalinha is up and about.
00:32:36Romero sending it forward.
00:32:37Bergwahl!
00:32:38Oh, it's brilliant!
00:32:39And it's 2-0.
00:32:42Sensational.
00:32:46Inch-perfect delivery from Tottenham's captain, Christian Romero and Lucas Bergwahl.
00:32:52West Ham caught cold.
00:32:56A man down and now two down.
00:32:59In the blinking of an eye.
00:33:02And this match is suddenly running away from the home side.
00:33:06Tottenham in complete control at the moment.
00:33:13Spence enjoying plenty of time inside West Ham's half of the field.
00:33:18The longer the game wears on.
00:33:20And brings the corner over on the far side.
00:33:25At the moment, West Ham heading for a seventh Premier League match at home in a row without a victory.
00:33:29Tell.
00:33:39Palinha into Bergwahl.
00:33:41Score of the second goal.
00:33:43It's three!
00:33:45Mickey van der Ven!
00:33:47And it gets worse and worse and worse for West Ham.
00:33:50What an away day for Spurs.
00:33:52And they are set to be emphatic winners of this London derby.
00:34:00And the home crowd are departing in droves.
00:34:04And it has all come undone for West Ham in the opening 19 minutes of the second half.
00:34:10Conceding three goals and having a player sent off.
00:34:16Bergwahl, van der Ven.
00:34:193-0.
00:34:22And West Ham United have now conceded 11 goals in their opening four matches.
00:34:30Sometimes the game can change, momentum can change after half-time.
00:34:33But we just kept going.
00:34:35Scored a brilliant goal from corner.
00:34:39And, yeah, of course, the red card helps, of course.
00:34:44But I felt we were dominating anyway.
00:34:46How are you finding it working with Thomas Frank, the new manager,
00:34:49and a new voice to listen to in the dressing room?
00:34:52It's been really good.
00:34:54As you can see today, we play really good football and win 3-0.
00:34:58So, yeah, it's been really good.
00:35:00Just trying to be better every day, training hard to develop.
00:35:05How enthused are you with what lies ahead of the next few days?
00:35:08I mean, Champions League, that's what it's all about, isn't it?
00:35:10People in your job, ultimately.
00:35:12Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:35:14I think we need to do well in the Premier League.
00:35:16I said that the whole time.
00:35:18We need to see if we can compete in all tournaments.
00:35:22But now, we're finished, happy with a win.
00:35:24Now it's all about the game on Tuesday.
00:35:27I was disappointed that the second half panned out the way it did.
00:35:31Because one mistake, and then we're 1-0 down,
00:35:34and then we have a red card, and while we're adjusting we're 2,
00:35:38and then pretty quickly the game goes away from you.
00:35:40And then you can say whatever you want then, because the scoreline's 3-0.
00:35:42And I don't think it tells the real reflection of the game,
00:35:45but at the same time it does because the scoreline's 3-0.
00:35:47Well, when you stopped playing, you were a set-piece coach, weren't you?
00:35:51So you've done the long throws,
00:35:53and now you're going to look at Tottenham's threat from corners.
00:35:55Well, I think Thomas Frank at Brentford as well was the same.
00:35:58He puts a lot of effort into the set place.
00:36:01I think Tottenham won't thank you. It's a bit like the Arsenal set-up.
00:36:04They load the back post. Hermansen, we feel like struggling early as well in the box,
00:36:08and they're putting a lot of bodies around the goalkeeper here.
00:36:10And you see the set-up here. I think it's tails-free around the back.
00:36:12You know, Romero and Van de Venz, the main sort of targets, in under that crossbar.
00:36:17It gets whipped in heavy under the crossbar.
00:36:19Now, the ref sees a foul here. For us, we looked at it numerous occasions.
00:36:22We don't think it's a foul. Yes, there's a coming together with Romero and Walker-Peters.
00:36:25But for me, I don't think there's enough in it. I know VAR had a look, and they stuck with the on-field decision as in the referee.
00:36:31But we see that in the box all the time. Yeah.
00:36:33We see that. I think that, for me, they're unlucky not to get a goal.
00:36:35Now, this is the next corner comes in. Again, they load it with six in the box, two on the edge, and load it around the back again.
00:36:40But watch this time Fernandes and Van de Venz. You know, if he gives a foul for Walker-Peters, how is this not a foul on the back?
00:36:47He's literally rugby tackled to the floor. So if you're looking for consistency, for me, that's a penalty.
00:36:52And again, the set-up around the box, and this is obviously the goal.
00:36:55Sar is free as a board. He's standing there like not a baller, as if he's not even playing in the same pitch.
00:37:00No West Ham player at any stage has a look at Sar inside the box, and he can't believe he's looked.
00:37:05Look at this. No challenge. He can see it all the way. Have some of that.
00:37:08It's such a simple goal. Is it not weird that you've highlighted the two things in the first half, which has caused them problems, and they do the same thing in the second?
00:37:19Well, again, a set-play coach would have to do the attacking set-plays and the defensive stuff.
00:37:23So at half-time, the West Ham set-play coach would go, hang on a minute, we've got a problem around the back here.
00:37:27We need to seal that off, and that, for me, is not good enough.
00:37:29But also, a valid point, but as a player on the pitch, once it's happened once or twice, I don't really care what you told me before,
00:37:37because now it's changed, I need to change in real-time and make a call.
00:37:40And if we're all at the front post and they're loaded at the back, why don't you make an adjustment?
00:37:45Tottenham's strength in depth, particularly in the forward areas, has all of a sudden become quite frightening.
00:37:51I mean, often managers talk about wanting to have two players per position. Spurs, you could argue, have three.
00:37:58Yeah, really strong squad, especially in those attacking areas, as you said.
00:38:01I think they've got a serious argument to say they're going to be in the top four.
00:38:07They're pushing for the top four. They've got a good manager, really, really like Thomas Frank.
00:38:11As you said, if they get an injury or something happens, someone dropping for them, the next man's up or the next man's up.
00:38:17They've brought Xavi Simmonds in and Kolo Mwani, two really good players with what they already had.
00:38:23So they're looking strong. I think if you're a Tottenham fan, you've got to be a little bit excited.
00:38:27And if you're a West Ham fan, it's the complete opposite, isn't it?
00:38:31I mean, they've conceded eight goals at home in two London derbies so far. It just looks flat.
00:38:37It's a mess. And I think the problem for Potter is he finished last season very poorly as well.
00:38:41People said, judge him on this season. He'll have a pre-season.
00:38:44He'll have to get his methods across and get his players in. And again, it's such a poor start.
00:38:48So you can see after the pressures, I think, mounting on Potter for sure.
00:38:52Do you agree? Absolutely.
00:38:54And even when they cut to him in the game, he doesn't look like he has the answers.
00:38:59He just seems a little bit baffled on the sideline.
00:39:02To St James's Park and the start of their new Strikers era. Wolves the visitors. Commentary from Guy Mowbray.
00:39:10Alexander Issac has gone. Johan Wisser isn't fit to play.
00:39:14Which means all the Newcastle attention today falls on Nick Valtemada.
00:39:19But the club's new record signing seems to have just the personality to revel in that.
00:39:24Amongst five Wolves changes, including goalkeeper Sam Johnson in for the unwell Jose Saar,
00:39:29there are debuts for Ladislav Krejci and Tolu Arakadari.
00:39:33£24 million worth of striker signed from the Belgian side Genk.
00:39:41It's Wolverhampton Wanderers who get the afternoon underway on Tyneside.
00:39:46They will be desperate to avoid a club record today as they go close very early on.
00:39:53Deflated behind for a corner.
00:39:55Well, that was scintillating from Vitor Pereira's team.
00:39:59Straight from the start.
00:40:02It was Rodrigo Gomez who got in down the left.
00:40:05The Wolves have a corner immediately.
00:40:07Another opportunity and Nick Pope has to spring into action.
00:40:15This is brilliant for Wolves.
00:40:16And he's got a good record against Newcastle too.
00:40:21It was nearly even better there.
00:40:23Prior to this weekend, Wolves had been behind for 81.5% of their Premier League games this season.
00:40:34Voltemada teeing up the shot and what a good shot it was.
00:40:38Jacob Murphy who went closest of any Newcastle player to scoring at Leeds two weeks back.
00:40:45And he's come the closest that any of them has today.
00:40:54Lovely ball. Krejci. Another good ball.
00:40:57Andrew Kadare. Dan Byrne has his measure.
00:41:05Bruno Guimaraes though loses out to Krejci.
00:41:10Through the gap goes Rodrigo Gomez.
00:41:13And then snatched at the shot.
00:41:16A little bit maybe overconfident there Bruno Guimaraes.
00:41:19Perfectly confident Rodrigo Gomez.
00:41:21Brilliant the way he got between two.
00:41:24That's brilliant with the finish.
00:41:27And I would think he'll be reasonably content with certainly the way his team are going about their task today.
00:41:33Dismissing the finishing touches.
00:41:38Liveramento. Barnes on the inside.
00:41:41Liveramento down the outside.
00:41:44And Hugo Bueno wins the battle but it is at the cost of a throw-in.
00:41:52Two new boys on each other.
00:41:54Eric Qadari and Voltemada.
00:41:58It's come down towards Voltemada at the back was Murphy.
00:42:02And that's a brilliant stop by Sam Johnston.
00:42:05Pure reflex.
00:42:08Murphy must have thought he was going to score.
00:42:11Joe Linton it is who knocks it down.
00:42:13Johnston in the right place.
00:42:14Barnes goes down.
00:42:15Under challenge of Mosquera and Mosquera has a word with Harvey Barnes on his way back up.
00:42:30Chris Kavanagh wasn't minded to give anything.
00:42:33It'll be looked at now by Tim Wood who's VAR.
00:42:37There is a bunk just on the edge of the box outside to be honest.
00:42:41Certainly taken out.
00:42:43The decision's been confirmed play on was right.
00:42:46Tom was right.
00:42:54To Nali.
00:43:00Goes Voltemada!
00:43:01That is just the right way to please your new fan base.
00:43:11Alexander Hu.
00:43:14How must that sound to the Newcastle new boy?
00:43:19He's got quite a lot to do with this.
00:43:25He's read the trajectory beautifully.
00:43:28Better than Atpadu could.
00:43:30And just peeled away, lent back and got the power.
00:43:34And it's Newcastle 1-0.
00:43:35One Wolves nil.
00:43:40To Bueno.
00:43:41Supported by Krejci here.
00:43:44Pope was just a little caught in two minds.
00:43:48The best of clearances from Cher.
00:43:50Hugo Bueno tries to keep Wolves going.
00:43:53And that's a chance and it's just wide.
00:43:57Rodrigo Gomez with the effort.
00:43:59He's on the end of most things that Wolves are doing around that Newcastle box.
00:44:02Needed a bit more beef behind the header to get it into the corner.
00:44:14Murphy away with it.
00:44:18Murphy again.
00:44:20He's lining it up again.
00:44:22Now Tonali's turn.
00:44:24And he'll have a shot.
00:44:26And with Johnston helpless.
00:44:28It's fractions away from being 2-0.
00:44:30Sam Johnston watching like the rest of us.
00:44:38A little bit quiet around St James' Park.
00:44:41On the field that is.
00:44:43Can suit Newcastle.
00:44:45The feeling will be they could do with another.
00:44:49Agpadu's pass.
00:44:51He's pretty woeful.
00:44:53Look at Mento to Barnes.
00:44:54Barnes breezes past Agpadu.
00:44:57Takes him on again with help from Livramento.
00:45:01Now Bruno Camarage.
00:45:02Now Harvey Barnes.
00:45:03That would have been a wonderful goal.
00:45:05Eddie Howe saying after the Leeds game a fortnight ago, we're in that moment where the goals aren't flowing.
00:45:14Well that move was flowing.
00:45:20Hugo Bueno takes it on.
00:45:23Roared on by the Wolves coaching team.
00:45:24Buenos Cross.
00:45:25It has to be right.
00:45:27Up goes Livramento.
00:45:29Bruno Camarage and that should do it for Newcastle.
00:45:34That has done it for Newcastle.
00:45:37It's their first win of the season.
00:45:40They nicked it.
00:45:42New boy Nick Gualtamada's header that has made the difference in the end.
00:45:46And for Wolves, well, it might turn for them, it has to turn for them.
00:45:52But for the first time they have lost all of their first four league games of a season.
00:45:57Newcastle United 1, Wolves 0.
00:46:00I thought we played pretty well after the first five minutes where Wolves started very strong.
00:46:05I thought we created some really good chances.
00:46:07We had control of the game.
00:46:09But at 1-0 you've never put the game to bed.
00:46:10And the fact we hadn't won a game this season then put sort of more pressure on you at the latter stages.
00:46:17But I thought we defended really well.
00:46:19It can't be a better debut, to be honest.
00:46:21I was just happy.
00:46:23I was looking in the faces and everybody was looking at me.
00:46:25And I was just happy.
00:46:27Also, to score directly a goal is important for a striker.
00:46:31And I guess I was just happy.
00:46:34I have a question.
00:46:35How is it possible for a team to press?
00:46:40How is it possible for a team to be aggressive?
00:46:44For a team to be aggressive in the defensive transition?
00:46:47How is it possible to win the duels?
00:46:49If we got yellow cards, first foul, one yellow card for Andre.
00:46:58First foul of Kresi, yellow card.
00:47:00First foul of Monetti, yellow card.
00:47:03And spoil our game.
00:47:06Spoil our game.
00:47:08Well, the big man is off to a good start, isn't he?
00:47:12A great start.
00:47:14A big talk over the summer.
00:47:15Who is going to replace Isak?
00:47:16And Valdemar is the man to do it, hopefully.
00:47:19It's a brilliant start, of course, Mark.
00:47:21People talk about he's a No. 9, he's a No. 10.
00:47:23I think he's a bit of both.
00:47:24This is good link-up play.
00:47:25We might see him drop into areas like this.
00:47:27You see him showing for the ball.
00:47:29Creating a space and holding it up.
00:47:31Getting his team up the pitch.
00:47:32Keeping it simple.
00:47:33Just keep an eye on him.
00:47:34He's showing for the ball again, Mark.
00:47:35On the shoulder, the defender, between the lines.
00:47:38I'm excited to see him play in a Newcastle shirt.
00:47:40I really am.
00:47:42What he brings, he brings a presence to the team.
00:47:43You know, they paid a lot of money for him.
00:47:44But I think there's still a very young player.
00:47:46And I think with Eddie and his staff, they can improve him.
00:47:50Like they did, I suppose, with Isak.
00:47:51They made him a better player.
00:47:52Even look at this.
00:47:53When he gets the ball from, I think, Sandro.
00:47:56There's four balls.
00:47:57Sorry, there's four worlds play around him.
00:47:58OK, I don't mind.
00:47:59I'll just make it over the top.
00:48:00Harvey Barnes just slightly offside in that one.
00:48:02But again, a great bit of skill from the big man.
00:48:04And when you're six foot six, Mark, I wouldn't shy away from this.
00:48:07You know, we've seen brilliant strength of forwards.
00:48:09We mentioned Alan Shearer, Les Ferdinand, I don't know, Duncan Ferguson.
00:48:12Big dunk, yeah.
00:48:13Big dunk, yeah.
00:48:14I mean, this is...
00:48:15Talk about old school before, about long throws.
00:48:17But it's not rocket science.
00:48:18Get the ball in the box.
00:48:19You've got a six foot six in striker in the box.
00:48:21And he'll score goals.
00:48:22And as he says himself, it's a perfect start in his debut at home as well.
00:48:26His movement will cause problems for centre-halves, won't it?
00:48:28Yeah, very difficult.
00:48:29Because as a centre-back, when you've got a striker that plays up against you all the time,
00:48:33it keeps you switched on.
00:48:35But where you see him pulling off into those and drifting into those clever areas,
00:48:39you don't want to go in there.
00:48:40And then the next thing, you've got to defend a big striker in the box.
00:48:43You're kind of not on it.
00:48:44You've switched off a little bit and he'll punish you.
00:48:46And if you follow him, then people are going behind.
00:48:48They've got speed in behind Newcastle, so it's a real threat now.
00:48:51They've got a big few weeks coming up of Wolves.
00:48:53Obviously, they haven't had the start that they wanted.
00:48:55They've lost their first four.
00:48:57All three promoted clubs they play between now and the end of October.
00:49:03Yeah, it's a worry, I think.
00:49:04When you don't win any games at the start, we've been there ourselves.
00:49:07Getting that first victory, it builds confidence, doesn't it?
00:49:09It's a feel-good factor around the training ground.
00:49:11But again, you look at them fixtures, he'll look at them...
00:49:13That next one's huge, isn't it? Leeds at Molineux.
00:49:16Massive.
00:49:17They're all massive when you don't win a game, but at the same time,
00:49:19it's amazing what a victory can do.
00:49:20You can kick them on.
00:49:21I think Vitor, I like them a lot.
00:49:23I think they'll be fine.
00:49:25Or I might have gone too early, Mark, do you think?
00:49:27It's not what I...
00:49:29I'm just asking.
00:49:31Look, when you present this show, you're not allowed an opinion.
00:49:34Trust me.
00:49:35Bournemouth were going for three straight wins when they faced Brighton,
00:49:39who beat Manchester City last time out.
00:49:41Tom Gale was at the Vitality.
00:49:45Bournemouth are looking to win their opening two Premier League home games
00:49:48for the very first time.
00:49:4918-year-old deadline day signing, Velko Milo Savlovic comes in to make his debut.
00:49:54This week, Marcus Tavenier, David Brooks and James Hill all extended their contracts.
00:50:00A small sample size of one game, but Brighton are without a point,
00:50:03and yet to score on the road.
00:50:05James Milner starts a Premier League match for the first time in over a year.
00:50:09Yankouba Mince and Karou Mitoma both start despite clocking up considerable air miles during the break.
00:50:19Recent results suggest Brighton know exactly what's needed to get the better of Bournemouth.
00:50:24Five wins across the last six Premier League meetings,
00:50:27and looking for a third on the spin here today.
00:50:31Evan Nielsen, great bit of trickery, and an early free kick.
00:50:37Hinchelwoods and the Brazilian have both stayed down,
00:50:41and we see there that Brighton youngster, when he looks to plant his right foot,
00:50:47it gives way.
00:50:49So, 16 seconds into kick-off, and Brighton are already forced to make a change.
00:51:01Dunk.
00:51:04Kuiper on his bike, quite literally, and didn't get a shove in the back there.
00:51:09The rise of the advertising hoardings.
00:51:14Brighton medical staff are racing down the touchline.
00:51:19It was a big-ass to get there, and I'm not sure that's needed from Antoine Semenyo.
00:51:26Pictures show that that was pretty painful.
00:51:29Play continues, Brighton down to ten.
00:51:33Seneci.
00:51:40Dunk.
00:51:41No distance on the header.
00:51:43Semenyo.
00:51:45Scott.
00:51:46Oh!
00:51:49What a way to score your first Premier League goal at the Vitality Stadium.
00:51:56He's never experienced this sensation on home soil.
00:52:03And Alex Scott puts the cherries in front.
00:52:10Brighton.
00:52:13A man down, and now a goal down.
00:52:15And that's operating in such a tight space there.
00:52:21And Alex Scott bags his first goal since New Year's Eve 2023.
00:52:30Oh, that's a lovely pass.
00:52:33Mintey, has he got it under control?
00:52:35He has!
00:52:36An excellent stop from Djordje Petrovic.
00:52:42It's the first time that Brighton have seen open grass behind the Bournemouth back line.
00:52:47You have to go back 13 Premier League games in mid-March for the last time Bournemouth lost a Premier League game which they scored first.
00:52:56That was here, a 2-1 defeat against Brentford.
00:53:00Mintey.
00:53:02Flag stays down.
00:53:10Mintey.
00:53:11His deep cross is a good one!
00:53:15And it's met by the foreheads of Karou Matoma.
00:53:21Great persistence here from Mintey.
00:53:24Petrovic came, got nowhere near, and it's an excellent header.
00:53:29Under pressure.
00:53:30Matoma bags his first goal of the season.
00:53:40Njoglu.
00:53:42Which is deflected.
00:53:43To Matoma.
00:53:45Veltman.
00:53:48Bynes-Mintey.
00:53:51Up against Truffair.
00:53:52Through the legs of Truffair!
00:53:54It's been a really lively start to this second half.
00:54:00From Jankouba-Mintey.
00:54:02The assist for the goal.
00:54:04And making life very difficult for Adrian Truffair.
00:54:08To try and drive it low.
00:54:13It was...
00:54:14Milos Adlovic.
00:54:19Milner.
00:54:20Welbeck.
00:54:21It was a desperate dive from George A. Petrovic.
00:54:29He was certainly worried.
00:54:31It's the bounce and the dip at the end that has the Serb scampering across.
00:54:37Dunk.
00:54:43Misplaced pass.
00:54:45The Brookings off his line.
00:54:46I don't think Tavernier has realised.
00:54:49Trying to go alone.
00:54:51Evan Nielsen.
00:54:53Oh, is he caught?
00:54:54He is!
00:54:56It's a penalty!
00:54:58Fabian Herzler will be not happy.
00:55:01His sides have gifted a way back into this game for Bournemouth.
00:55:08And the long legs of Jan Paul van Hecker gift Brighton their first penalty of the season.
00:55:16So it's Antoine Semeno.
00:55:20Antoine Semeno!
00:55:21Sends the keeper the wrong way.
00:55:30The Garnetian International continues his bright start to the season.
00:55:36His third Premier League goal of the season.
00:55:40Bournemouth 2, Brighton 1.
00:55:43Semenya on the stretch.
00:55:53Does enough to take the sting out of the ball.
00:55:56He's up against the Brighton man who does really well.
00:55:59Manny Oglu who halts his progress but he has possession back.
00:56:03Clyde it!
00:56:05I think that hit van Hecker flush in the face.
00:56:09No doubt about that.
00:56:10Hits him flush in the chops.
00:56:13That would have stung.
00:56:15Minte.
00:56:17Dunk out wide.
00:56:20Minte away from Adams.
00:56:22Opens up!
00:56:24And Sinesi got there before his goalkeeper was called upon.
00:56:28He's yet to score this season, Yankuba Minte.
00:56:32That was certainly goal bound.
00:56:33It is a third win on the spin for Andoni Irreola.
00:56:43As Bournemouth make their best ever start to a Premier League season after four games.
00:56:50Fabian Hertzler won't be happy.
00:56:53This one has got away from them at full time.
00:56:56Bournemouth 2, Brighton 1.
00:56:58Brighton won.
00:57:01Andoni, a third consecutive Premier League victory, how do you feel?
00:57:06Yeah, very happy with the win because also I value a lot this win because it was against a very good team.
00:57:11I think the game went some moments for us, some moments for them and it was not clear what was going to happen at the end and to win this kind of games is always very good.
00:57:25If you lose, of course, you can't say that we did enough.
00:57:29But I think we had chances, we controlled the game, we had the momentum and like I said, small margins made a difference today and the small margins weren't on our side.
00:57:38We didn't make them right, so we can't say that we did enough.
00:57:43It was pretty ugly. The manager did say at half time that just gets stuck into them.
00:57:47It's going to be ugly, but make sure when we get our chances we finish.
00:57:50So we've done that today and three points.
00:57:51For me, watching back on the replay, it looked as though Semenyo, it was a needless shove on De Kaipa as he went into the advertising hoardings.
00:58:00Have you heard from the player his thoughts on what happened?
00:58:03Yes, I heard from the thoughts, but I think sometimes it's better to say nothing.
00:58:09They've had a great start to the season, Herb Bournemouth, and they use the long pass very effectively, don't they?
00:58:15They do, yeah. And what I like today is that the way they started off the game, they started building up from the back a little bit.
00:58:23So what that did was draw Brighton down, so Brighton thought they could press Bournemouth, and then what they would do is they'd just miss the press out.
00:58:32Instead of trying to play through it, they'd miss it out.
00:58:33Anton Semenyo, who normally plays on the left, was on the right today, and he was a real focal point for them.
00:58:40Now they're missing out the press, but what they're also doing is getting bodies around for if they do win the first ball or they don't win the first ball, they can pick up the second ball.
00:58:49So every time the ball goes long and wide and high, they get bodies around it. Here we're going to show you how they outnumber Brighton.
00:58:59In that little space there, it's a four against three, so it's likely that they're going to pick up the ball in the second ball, and actually they're just playing for territory.
00:59:08So this is Evan Nielsen now on the right-hand side. It was mostly down the right-hand side, but Semenyo's just gone off the screen.
00:59:13Now he's in. So it's very clever the way that they did it. This is a little bit different, but again, it's a long ball into Semenyo.
00:59:20Again, they've picked up the second ball, because they've got bodies around it, so they know if it's going to drop somewhere here, we're first to it.
00:59:26And then you can't take nothing away from this strike. That's a quality strike. Alex Squat, Erscott, showing his quality.
00:59:33I don't know if the goalkeeper's a little bit unsighted, but great start from Bournemouth.
00:59:37This manager is really impressive. He doesn't waste any time. He gets the ball into dangerous areas very quickly.
00:59:41But the key to that is making sure you have enough bodies to win the second ball.
00:59:44Yeah, because the whole team knows it's going into a certain area, let's flood that area and overload the opponent,
00:59:50and then we can get the second ball and play from there.
00:59:52OK, good start for Bournemouth. Two games on tomorrow's Match of the Day.
00:59:57It's Josh Cullen, the captain!
01:00:04Oh, it's in!
01:00:06Erling Haaland!
01:00:09And Pumau!
01:00:12What a goal!
01:00:14Sensational goal by Richarlison!
01:00:16And Five Live's Premier League Sunday has commentary of both of those games.
01:00:24All the build-up starts from midday.
01:00:27Two Women's Rugby Union World Cup quarterfinals to look forward to tomorrow,
01:00:31including England against Scotland from 3.30.
01:00:34WSL, Everton versus Spurs is live on the iPlayer.
01:00:37The World Athletics is on BBC Two from Tokyo tomorrow,
01:00:41and then highlights from the final day of the PGA from Wentworth on BBC Four.
01:00:46The UEFA Champions League is back on the BBC.
01:00:51Brilliant!
01:00:53Highlights of every single match.
01:00:55All the goals and all the unmissable moments.
01:00:58It's what everybody's talking about.
01:01:00Remarkable.
01:01:02What a night that was.
01:01:04Match of the day, UEFA Champions League highlights.
01:01:06Wednesday night on BBC iPlayer.
01:01:08Fulham were still looking for their first league win of the season at home to Leeds.
01:01:12Your commentator Mark Scott.
01:01:15Marco Silva says Fulham have been better than their points total suggests,
01:01:20but he can't argue about goals being a problem for them.
01:01:23So the recent capture of Kevin for a club record fee was very welcome,
01:01:27with the Brazilian winger beginning on the bench.
01:01:30Harry Wilson, who was close to a move to Leeds on deadline day for Timothy Castagna,
01:01:35is the one Fulham change.
01:01:37There are five for Leeds.
01:01:39Carl Darlow making his Premier League debut for them in goal with Lucas Perry out injured,
01:01:42while captain Ethan Ampedou's back after injury,
01:01:46as Aronson Okafor and Calvert-Lewin make up a completely different front line.
01:01:50Bassey, pop forwards for Wilson, clever run, great control!
01:01:59And then, in the nick of time, Pascal Strouck was there for Leeds.
01:02:02And it's Okafor leading the counter.
01:02:07Two Fulham players in his way, Okafor can't get the better of Anderson,
01:02:12but does win the first corner of the game for Leeds.
01:02:15And it comes from Stack, and Leino gets a fist to it.
01:02:25Lifted back in, and Calvert-Lewin's header is straight at Bernd Leino.
01:02:30Maybe a suggestion that Calvert-Lewin was in an offside position.
01:02:35It's right at the Fulham keeper.
01:02:37If Fulham don't win today, it would be just the fourth time they've failed to win any of their opening four games in a top-division season.
01:02:47Doing well to stay awake at the moment, as are you if you're still watching.
01:02:52Calvert-Lewin, strong header. Okafor was nearly in. Longstaff!
01:02:56Big punt forwards from Darlow that Fulham didn't deal with, and Longstaff absolutely pummeled that, and was just a touch too high.
01:03:07Finally, something to get excited about.
01:03:12Certainly not been raining chances here.
01:03:15We are desperately hoping for a change in the quality of the game.
01:03:20That's neatly worked.
01:03:22Shtack can get the cross in, and at the near post, Aronson denied.
01:03:28Nicely worked this from Leeds.
01:03:30Aronson on the end of it, and the near-post flick patted away by Bernd Leino.
01:03:39Muniz.
01:03:41He's got Strout all over him.
01:03:43Muniz has done really well, and eventually out comes the whistle.
01:03:47Don't think Pascal Strout can have any real complaints.
01:03:52Lukic and Wilson over it.
01:03:56It's Wilson!
01:03:58Really good save from Darlow.
01:04:01Fired towards the top corner by Wilson.
01:04:04And that is Fulham's first shot this afternoon.
01:04:08Pockel, risky. Smith-Rowe.
01:04:13No whistle, Smith-Rowe still going.
01:04:16And Smith-Rowe! Off the post!
01:04:18Well, Craig Pawson now gives the free kick.
01:04:24Leeds convinced that there was a foul here on Pockel.
01:04:29Play went on, and Smith-Rowe hit the post, but then Craig Pawson whistled for the free kick.
01:04:35Kevin!
01:04:36So here comes Fulham's club record signing. The Brazilian winger Kevin is on for Iwobi with a quarter of an hour to play.
01:04:46Can he bring this game to life?
01:04:49Kevin.
01:04:51Kevin.
01:04:57Scooped in towards Sesignano!
01:05:00Lukic went for the spectacular and very nearly pulled it off.
01:05:05Kevin, the architect here, driving towards the Leeds back line.
01:05:09Clever little flick in towards Sesignano, who then flicked it into the path of Sasha Lukic.
01:05:16And he just didn't get enough on the effort.
01:05:24Kevin.
01:05:25Kevin.
01:05:28Kevin's cross, Traore!
01:05:31We need to talk about Kevin because things have certainly improved for Fulham going forward since his introduction.
01:05:38That was a lovely ball in. Traore over it, but couldn't get the ball under the bar.
01:05:43Kevin.
01:05:48Kevin.
01:05:53And again, Kevin!
01:05:56Brilliant save by Darlow to deny Kevin a goal on his Fulham debut.
01:06:01And deny Fulham the three points.
01:06:04Started the move, quick give-and-go, and then bent this towards the top corner.
01:06:08And that is a terrific piece of keeping from Carl Darlow to keep it at 0-0.
01:06:18Lukic with the corner, with a couple of minutes of added time left.
01:06:22And he went for it!
01:06:23Oh, it's in!
01:06:25Fulham have won it!
01:06:30An own goal from Gabriel Goodmanson.
01:06:35Devastation for Daniel Farker.
01:06:39Whose side have conceded deep, deep into added time.
01:06:46I'm not sure what Goodmanson's up to there, but he's absolutely done his own keeper.
01:06:51And Leeds United cannot believe that they are going to leave here empty-handed.
01:07:00Gabriel Goodmanson, was he just trying to make a clearance there?
01:07:03Because he seemed like a strange sort of own goal.
01:07:06It's difficult to explain sometimes.
01:07:07Of course, he's the most heartbroken player in the dressing room and really very disappointed in tears.
01:07:12So, he doesn't need any criticism from me.
01:07:14He just needs an arm, a shoulder.
01:07:16Football can be cruel and can be heartbreaking.
01:07:18And sometimes you're on the lucky side today, definitely on the unlucky side.
01:07:23First half, I think we did it probably too slow.
01:07:25We didn't take many, many risks in the decisions.
01:07:28It was everything too slow and in some moments when this happens, it's more difficult to break teams down.
01:07:34I think second half, we were better.
01:07:36You told me that we could expect some exciting play from Kevin and we saw that in his brief cameo.
01:07:41He really did sort of change the whole feel of the match, didn't he?
01:07:43Yes, massive impact from him.
01:07:45He's still very, very young, but at the same time, that was the reason why I pushed the club so hard to get him here.
01:07:52But definitely, he's a great talent and he's going to help us.
01:07:55It is great as a fan when you get that first glimpse of a new signing and they deliver.
01:08:00And that's what Fulham fans have had this afternoon.
01:08:03Not a very Brazilian name, I might add.
01:08:05No, it's not, no.
01:08:07But he's very Brazilian with his football, should we say, Mark.
01:08:09No, he did let it, it wasn't a brilliant game, but he came off the bench, I think, seven to six minutes and really lit the game up.
01:08:14He's very direct, 1v1.
01:08:16You know, he's got a step over, you could say, you know, young Ronaldo perhaps getting the ball into the box.
01:08:21But again, he brought excitement to the Fulham fans, to the home fans, they needed a lift today.
01:08:25And I think this guy, Kevin, really give it to him.
01:08:27Again, he's not fair to go at players.
01:08:29Again, that's a phenomenal cross-throw coming into the back post.
01:08:31He's done that with the outside of his foot, it's a brilliant technique.
01:08:34And again, watch this, he's just direct, he's got one thing in his mind, how can I create a chance or a goal?
01:08:39He's off the mark, 1-2, and this is a brilliant save.
01:08:41And even when Mark Scott on commentary goes, you know, that's a save, he gets in point for leads.
01:08:45But it's a bit of a mess, to be honest.
01:08:47I feel for Goodmanson, I think he's just gone over Tom Kearney's head.
01:08:50It's unlucky, isn't it?
01:08:51It could have really went in there.
01:08:52You see the replay here, I think Kearney's jumps out, and he just misses it.
01:08:55And then Roden goes underneath it as well.
01:08:57And it just smacks off Goodmanson's head, and he doesn't know much about it, to be honest.
01:09:01But they need a bit of luck for him, and they got it.
01:09:03And you feel for him in tears in the dressing room after, but it just shows how much it hurts him.
01:09:06He's had a good pre-season, well, not pre-season, start to the season with Shakhtar.
01:09:11He's scored five in as many games in their European qualifiers, and now we're going to be subjected to a whole season of,
01:09:18we need to talk about Kevin puns, which will be an absolute joy.
01:09:22Leeds' problem isn't going to be unlucky home goals, though, is it?
01:09:25It's going to be scoring goals.
01:09:26And they've only scored a penalty so far this season in the Premier League.
01:09:30Yeah, big, big pressure on Dominic Calvert-Lewin to deliver, to stay fit and stay on the pitch.
01:09:36But also, they've got to supply him with, I think he had maybe one chance today, which he probably should have done better with.
01:09:41He can't just be down to one man.
01:09:42No, and they've all got to chip in and they've got to create a lot more.
01:09:46Yes, unlucky with that today, but they were still only getting a point.
01:09:49They don't look like they're getting three points because they're not creating enough chances.
01:09:52OK, next, Everton against Aston Villa with Conor McNamara.
01:09:56There's just one change from the Everton team that began their win at Wolves last time out.
01:10:04Former Villa player Tim Iribunum comes in for Vitaly Michalenko, who withdrew from international duty with Ukraine due to injury.
01:10:12Unai Emery makes four changes from Villa's 3-0 defeat at home to Palace.
01:10:17Emi Martinez returns in goal.
01:10:19Luka Dina plays against his old club as both Lamar Bogart and Emi Buendia make their first start to the campaign.
01:10:26New signing, Harvey Elliott is on the bench.
01:10:35Conor to Borgard, he didn't want to receive it there.
01:10:39Gannon Jusby has been able to take it off him.
01:10:41It was Gay's attempted shot, this is Grealish.
01:10:44Beto! Great save, Martinez!
01:10:48Crack is raised in the far side anyway.
01:10:56Grealish probably in an offside position as Idrisike took the initial shot in.
01:11:03So, Everton offside, there had been an appeal for a penalty in there too, but because the flag was up for offside it mitigates any penalty appeal.
01:11:13And Jai, sort of bright start to the game.
01:11:22Bogart, well positioned.
01:11:25Jank O'Brien descended in, flicked on by Keane, controlled by Beto, sits up for Grealish!
01:11:42Martinez had to react, and eventually it goes out for a corner off Tyrone Miggs.
01:11:51It's Route 1, but it's so nearly effective for Everton.
01:11:54That's to Villa, who drew 0-0 on the opening weekend at home to Newcastle.
01:12:03It's been their only Premier League point so far this new season.
01:12:09Tilly Bills loses out to Idrisike, this is Njai.
01:12:16Idrisike...
01:12:17Grealish...
01:12:20Grealish...
01:12:22Catch trying to stand him up, good work from Jack Grealish as he wins the corner off Esri Coggs.
01:12:30It's a real good thrust to Everton's play when they surge forward.
01:12:39Garner's delivery, and Tilly are not too far away at all.
01:12:43It was Keane's forehead.
01:12:53Grealish...
01:12:59Plenty promise from Everton, now can they produce?
01:13:02It's Beto!
01:13:03Big chance!
01:13:05Had one guilt-edged opportunity in the first half, Beto.
01:13:08And here in the opening minutes of the second period, he's hit again.
01:13:13Just needed a glance.
01:13:19Buendia...
01:13:21Gets away from Irabuda.
01:13:23And Buendia's shot to Flex, and it's gonna be a corner.
01:13:26It's about as dangerous an opportunity as Aston Villa have had all day.
01:13:30Good being Tarkovsky.
01:13:37Grealish...
01:13:40Good touch.
01:13:44Corner...
01:13:46Looking for Keane Gensprey Hall...
01:13:48Martino is unable to handle...
01:13:50First for Jake O'Brien...
01:13:51And then Irabuda...
01:13:55And Everton in the end, get a corner.
01:14:01Martínez and Lucadinha colliding with each other here, the two teammates.
01:14:10Brave goalkeeping by Martínez to push it away.
01:14:12Tim Irabuda, who's never scored for Everton, trying to follow it in against his old two.
01:14:17Two.
01:14:23Twenty minutes plus the stoppages to play.
01:14:28Grissom runches in.
01:14:30Grealish holds on to it.
01:14:36Keane!
01:14:37Great save, Martínez!
01:14:38Michael Keane on his 200th Premier League appearance for Everton.
01:14:45How close is this to breaking the deadlock?
01:14:49Great delivery for Grealish.
01:14:51But what about the save?
01:14:57Still time.
01:14:58We move into five minutes of additional time.
01:15:11And five minutes...
01:15:12Grealish.
01:15:16Taking on Cash...
01:15:18Header from Michael Keane again!
01:15:20The latest in a succession of headers today from Everton's number five.
01:15:25If anyone could have won this game for them today, it's Michael Keane.
01:15:31If Emdi, I think, was going to win it, it would have been us on the performance today.
01:15:36I thought we played really well.
01:15:37Great intensity.
01:15:39We've done so many good things in the game and played well.
01:15:42Just we couldn't quite get that finishing touching.
01:15:44That's also credit to Aston Villa, who defended very well.
01:15:48I thought it was really good.
01:15:49We made it difficult for them.
01:15:50We were on the front fork, we pressed them really well.
01:15:53And I'm sure they'll go well thinking they had a really tough afternoon.
01:15:57So, yeah, I was happy with that.
01:15:58I thought we just lacked that final pass, that final shot.
01:16:01And I know the boys up top are frustrated now,
01:16:04having not scored a goal.
01:16:06So, we'll go back and I'm sure they'll be working hard to try and score for the next game.
01:16:09We need to improve and to get confidence to play more with the ball.
01:16:14Again, the goalkeeper coming back and playing a fantastic match.
01:16:18He saved us out of time.
01:16:20But I am happy because we compete and this is the first step forward.
01:16:25I appreciate you're happy with the performance,
01:16:26but you know that there will be a lot of talk about four games now and no goals scored.
01:16:31Yes, of course, I know it.
01:16:33I know it.
01:16:34Does it bug you as much?
01:16:36We are going to work.
01:16:37We are going to work and we know inside the problem we had and how we are going to come back.
01:16:44We'll come on to the lack of goals very shortly.
01:16:48But they kept hold of him in the transfer window, Amir Martinez, and he kept Everton at bay.
01:16:52Yeah, it was big news, wasn't it? Transfer deadline day.
01:16:54It looked like he might have been going to Old Trafford or elsewhere, perhaps.
01:16:57But again, I think he's sure why he's been voted the best goalkeeper in the world a couple of times.
01:17:01He brings real presence. That's a brilliant save from Beto, claws it out.
01:17:04But he brings presence to the team, Mark. He's got that confidence about himself.
01:17:08This is an even better save than you think.
01:17:09He saves it with his leg, but it takes a bit of a nick off contra on the way through.
01:17:12When Jack hits this, it takes a nick, makes it even a better save, gets it up and away,
01:17:15gives him a chance to regroup.
01:17:17Again, he's getting really under severe pressure there, but he deals with that.
01:17:20Gets a nice flick on it again, but this is the save of the match off Keane.
01:17:23This is a brilliant save onto the bar. It's world-class from Amir Martinez,
01:17:27and it's a big reason, you know, that they wanted to keep hold of him.
01:17:31You see this reaction at the end, because I was wondering what the Villa away fans would be like
01:17:34after the game, the reaction, because I don't know if he wanted to leave
01:17:37or the club wanted to sell him for financial reasons, but it's a really good deal
01:17:40they've kept hold of him, and he showed again today how good he is.
01:17:43The other end of the pitch, there has to be a worry for them.
01:17:46It's the first time in their history they haven't scored in their first four opening league games.
01:17:51And the longer it goes on, the more it becomes an issue all the time for the forward players.
01:17:56But they just need more sustained periods of the ball in the final third.
01:18:00They're not keeping hold of the ball.
01:18:01Oli Watkins is so quiet today, you almost forgot he was on the pitch.
01:18:04Now you're looking at maybe Jadon Sancho. Can you get a tune out of him?
01:18:08Can Unai Emery get him going?
01:18:10Harvey Eller, is he going to create? Because they're not creating enough chances at all,
01:18:14hence why they haven't scored a goal.
01:18:15Because they have lost so many, haven't they?
01:18:17They've had a real churn in those positions.
01:18:20Yeah, if you look at the people, Asensio, Rashford, Bailey, they've all gone.
01:18:24They did manage to get Harvey Eller and Sancho in, so you're hoping they can create.
01:18:28But it's worrying for Aston Villa, and they need that first goal.
01:18:31Any kind of goal, they just need one straight away.
01:18:34Crystal Palace are on a run of nine unbeaten matches in the Premier League.
01:18:39Sunderland went there with six points out of nine so far.
01:18:42Chris Wise at this one.
01:18:44Rather than rejoicing over new signings, the greatest pleasure for Crystal Palace will be seeing Mark Gay still in their colours.
01:18:53Now, Oliver Klasner was very firm this week in knocking back reports he'd have quit had his captain been sold to Liverpool.
01:18:59Palace, though, are without Ismail Assar as well as Adam Wharton through injury, but that opens the door for Jeremy Pino.
01:19:06The Spanish international makes his full debut.
01:19:08Sunderland's start succeeded the expectations of many, but perhaps not those involved at the club.
01:19:14They don't have Enzo Le Fay available, but there is a chance from the start for Wilson Isidore, who's been very effective at the end of games in recent weeks.
01:19:24Last team to beat Crystal Palace were Newcastle United, who put five past them in mid-April.
01:19:31Since then, two trophies and a taste of European football.
01:19:35It's not been a bad few months to be a Crystal Palace supporter.
01:19:39Adorate, he's welted on it a bit too long, and then Munoz, in his desperate attempts to try and reach it, has sent a fellow South American to the ground,
01:19:50and is going to get the first yellow card as well here.
01:19:56There's a procession of them in black shirts on the edge of the box, that's not where the ball's gone, it's Siddiqui instead.
01:20:02Something a little more crafty from Sunderland, but not the end product from Noah Siddiqui.
01:20:11On back by Pino, showing his defensive attributes, and off goes Munoz, showing his attacking qualities.
01:20:20Waiting for support, Hughes is the option, Pino again, Pino!
01:20:26I think Robin Roos probably had that covered.
01:20:32Just a small flicker, perhaps, of what Jeremy Pino might be able to bring to Crystal Palace.
01:20:39Oliver Glasner spoke yesterday about how impressed he'd been with Sunderland so far this season.
01:20:45Noted that they have many quick players with quick feet.
01:20:49Yeah, he recollects for Crystal Palace.
01:20:52Kamada, Pino, misses!
01:20:56Clearest opportunity of the game for either so far.
01:21:01Robin Roos would have been looking over his shoulder, expecting that ball to nestle into the back of his net, but it's bounced just wide.
01:21:1014 new signings this summer for Regis Labris's team.
01:21:16The challenge now for Sunderland's manager is to keep the new arrivals happy, as well as the old faces as well.
01:21:23Siddiqui, I've been impressed with him so far.
01:21:26Odingre trying to take on Richards.
01:21:29He's got away from Richards, Odingre, and he's got the ball in.
01:21:32It's Taubi, it's a great block from Mitchell.
01:21:35The Palace man just launched himself in the way of Schemstein Taubi.
01:21:44It's a ball ball from Gaye to Munoz, right on his toes.
01:21:54Lerma.
01:21:58Mitchell taking it in his stride, and delivering!
01:22:03And Meteta there, and Pino!
01:22:06And blocked by Alderate.
01:22:09Everything's coming the way of the Spaniard, but no explosive moment just yet.
01:22:16Super noise coming from the Sunderland fans, what a great addition they are.
01:22:21Back in the Premier League again.
01:22:23Hunger from Hulme to win it.
01:22:28Taubi.
01:22:30Diara, it went up from Javi Diara, it just wasn't coming back down quick enough.
01:22:39Club record signing Javi Diara, £30 million from Strasbourg.
01:22:44Even if it is just a point here for Sunderland, that will be a very welcome addition to what's been a very good start.
01:22:51Not ideal defensive conditions these.
01:22:54Richard has gone towards the near post with his throw.
01:22:57It's dropped for Kamada!
01:22:59It's Roofs getting down quickly to stop it.
01:23:02And it was going in as well from Daichi Kamada.
01:23:05Having some big moments already in his young Sunderland career, Robin Roofs.
01:23:10De Venis found a couple of little pockets of space like that since he's come on.
01:23:19Pino.
01:23:20There's even more room here for Hughes.
01:23:22Munoz.
01:23:23Mateta.
01:23:24And Roofs with another excellent save.
01:23:27Probably his best so far.
01:23:29It is the shoulder of the Dutchman that stopped it.
01:23:33It's the shoulder still of a goalkeeper who showed some very rapid reflexes.
01:23:38He's got a bit of Uche's shirt.
01:23:48Palace have got a free kick.
01:23:58Hughes free kick.
01:23:59Not quite reaching Uche.
01:24:01It's come to De Veni.
01:24:04Mitchell.
01:24:05Richards.
01:24:08Uche.
01:24:11And Kamada.
01:24:12From distance and Roofs has got to that one too.
01:24:17That's the second time in this second half alone that Roofs has been the block for Kamada's goal.
01:24:24A little bit of a kerfuffle going on off the back of all of this as well with Palace having a man down inside the penalty area in Uche.
01:24:31There's one or two Palace players who were wondering whether he was caught after he unleashed that shot.
01:24:38Not enough I think for the referee to go to the screen.
01:24:40I think at the end we have to get the penalty because I think it's easy to attach to Uche.
01:24:49When he had the finish he came with the starts up and then for me it's a clear penalty.
01:24:55But again we have to accept it but still unbeaten after four games it's okay.
01:24:59The second half they pushed.
01:25:01I think it's normal here at home and we showed a good character, good resilience to defend together.
01:25:07And your goalkeeper in particular Robin Roofs has had a very good game.
01:25:11Yeah, he's a really good goalkeeper.
01:25:14We need good players in the squad to be efficient and competitive in that league and it was the case today.
01:25:20I'm really happy with the performance I put on today and I'm also really happy that we could take one point.
01:25:27And I heard the Sunderland fans at the end getting their chance out that the Roofs is on fire.
01:25:32Does that translate for you? Are you aware what road they're walking down there?
01:25:36Well, it's always really nice when they chant your name or when they're happy with you.
01:25:41So no, I'm really proud, yeah.
01:25:43Well, two goalless draws to end an eight-game match of the day at nearly half past twelve.
01:25:48So if you're still with us and watching live then fair play to you. Thank you.
01:25:52They were resilient with Sunderland, weren't they?
01:25:54Yeah, really impressive. They're away from home. They've just been promoted.
01:25:58It's these type of performances they need. You can see them all springing out, getting up to the ball,
01:26:03doing the dirty work, the work that normally doesn't get highlighted.
01:26:07We showed ten players back in the box there defending the goal at all costs,
01:26:12getting themselves behind the ball. Here we see the shape of 4-3-3, but very deep.
01:26:18Their priority is to not concede. They work within that shape.
01:26:22They get pressure on the ball all the time, even when the cross does come in.
01:26:26Alderate, great block there. Hits his heel.
01:26:29I like this one because look at the desire and the work rate to stop the break, the Crystal Palace break.
01:26:34Now you've got Xhaka, who I think is a really clever sign and he's going to be a big player for them
01:26:38with his experience. Just calmly slows it down. Bit of composure.
01:26:42This is Talbi, who's an attacking winger, doing the work of a full-back, which you love to see.
01:26:49This is really late on in the game. Palace are pushing for a goal.
01:26:52And as I said, away from home, when this ball goes up in the air, every single Sunderland player is back in the box,
01:26:59doing what they need to do to make sure that they keep a clean sheet.
01:27:02And when they did get past them...
01:27:04Yeah, great chance from the Sunderland fans, Mark. The roof is on fire.
01:27:07He's had a brilliant game, he really has.
01:27:09You know, we talk about Patterson, maybe he got them into the Premier League last year.
01:27:12Brilliant save in the play-off final. But they brought this guy in.
01:27:15And there's a replay in that because he's actually lifted his shoulder up to make a block on Matetas.
01:27:19It's a deliberate save. It's a phenomenal save.
01:27:22You know, as I say, I like Sunderland's performance today because everyone was behind the ball.
01:27:25Everyone was blocking shots. And when they got past that, Ruf was on fire at the back.
01:27:30And that's seven points out of their first 12, which for a promoted side is really impressive.
01:27:35I think that's important because you've seen promoted sides in the past come up.
01:27:38Be too open, conceding too many goals.
01:27:40Labrice has given them a real platform, really defensive, away from home as well.
01:27:44It's a brilliant point for them.
01:27:45OK, let's show you the whole of the league table before we go.
01:27:50Arsenal lead the way on goal difference with wins for Spurs and Bournemouth.
01:27:55Also giving them nine points.
01:27:57Chelsea missed the chance to go top after Cossine in that late equaliser at Brentford.
01:28:02Newcastle's first victory has taken them up to nine.
01:28:06Wolves have started the league season with four straight defeats for the first time.
01:28:11It's also the first time, as we've been saying in Aston Villa's history,
01:28:14that they have been goalless at this stage.
01:28:17And West Ham drop into the relegation zone following their defeat.
01:28:22Thanks to Shea and to Ashley.
01:28:24All about the North West with Kelly tomorrow.
01:28:27But tonight it's North London who are enjoying themselves.
01:28:30Good night.
