00:00Brazil's former president Jair Bolsonaro has been sentenced to 27 years and three months in prison

00:06for attempting to mount a coup after losing the 2022 election.

00:11Bolsonaro, who denied wrongdoing, was convicted of trying to stay in power

00:15despite losing to his left-wing rival in the race.

00:19Prosecutors found him guilty on five counts,

00:22including attempting to murder his rival, Lula da Silva.

00:25Four out of five judges found him guilty in a sentence that is expected to prompt backlash from the U.S. government

00:32and has sparked protest in the Latin American country.

00:36The former president said through his lawyers he would attempt to appeal the conviction, which they called excessive.

00:43Despite his legal troubles, Bolsonaro, who has been put under house arrest, remains a powerful political player in Brazil.
