Hotspot Policing Scheme launched in Bodmin
Transcript
00:00So we're here today in Bob Min for the launch of Hotspot Policing, which is about putting resources into
00:07hot spots, so serious violence and antisocial behaviour hot spots, in order to put people off offending
00:13and to make people feel safer. So what you're going to see is street marshal patrols
00:18alongside police patrols, which are highly visible out in your town.
00:23So Hotspot Policing has proven to work, there's many studies both nationally and internationally
00:28which say that it does work, it does reduce crime and antisocial behaviour, it is happening across the force in other towns
00:36and it's great that we now are introducing it into Bob Min town centre.
00:40So Bob Min's a great place to live, it's a wonderful town, but like everywhere it has its issues
00:48and so it's important that people feel first of all that they can have confidence being out and about,
00:53that local businesses know that the police presence is there and that they're reporting things
00:59if they've got concerns, if there's something that's happened, we make sure it's reported.
01:03So that visible presence and the contact with the community really helps to make sure that all that information
01:09is coming in and we can deal with the problems as they come up.
01:13We just want to create that environment whereby people are comfortable walking through a town centre,
01:19be it in the morning, the afternoon or the evening, so it's natural for people to be concerned
01:25if they're walking through an area that's not especially well lit and there's not many people about,
01:30just having awareness that there are officers on duty, people to give them guidance and keep them safe.
01:39I think that adds a lot to a community.
01:42A visual deterrent will prevent a lot of that from happening because a lot of these things happen
01:48because there's no one around to see them.
01:50It might be people that are bored with nothing better to do and they think,
01:54well, we'll just do this for a bit of fun, not really thinking about the consequences of their actions
01:58and thinking that there'll be nothing done to them and no one will see them do it.
02:03I'm really glad it's come to Bodmin because Bodmin has been recognised as somewhere that things like this do happen.
02:10We really want to put a stop to it for the benefit of everyone and the enjoyment of the town.
