00:10Number one, the disconcerting news that is coming in from across the border in Nepal, complete anarchy on the streets of Nepal, political chaos grips Nepal right now.

00:25And the other big story, Maria, that we're going to look at very cleanly back home, well in just about an hour, we're all set to have the 14th Vice President of the country.
00:33Yes, Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan, who is at present at Prahlad Joshi's residence, we'll get details of what he is up to and when is Prime Minister Modi going to visit him.
00:43And those visuals will perhaps send a clear message of how the events will be playing out in the Rajya Sabha.
00:50And did the NDA actually come up with some surprises in these Vice Presidential elections?

03:27The Nepal Army Chief is going to brief the nation shortly.
03:31Because, Maria, with the sequence of events, the Prime Minister has resigned, the President has resigned, all the Cabinet Ministers have stepped down.
03:39And now there's open anarchy with political leaders, their families being attacked.
03:43The wife of a former Prime Minister burnt to death.
03:48Former Prime Minister Sheer Bahadur Deoba and his wife targeted as well.
03:53Arjun Rana Deoba was the country's foreign minister.
03:59She was attacked by the protesters.
04:01In fact, what we can also tell our viewers is that the President of Nepal, President Paudil, resigned as well.
04:10And Jhalan Thanil's wife was set ablaze and she passed away.
04:16A large number of protesters have gathered also outside the Tribhuvan Airport, that is the international airport in Kathmandu.
04:24Now, the army is in charge of Nepal, is the message that is coming in, even as the protest has taken a violent turn.
04:34All right, you know, because this is disconcerting and worrying, because there's already an advisory that has been issued by India to not to travel to Kathmandu.
04:42And if you're there, then be indoors, because the word right now coming in, Maria, is disturbing.
04:47That protesters have now gathered in large numbers right outside Kathmandu Airport.
04:51For just a short while ago, we had connected to those very worried passengers who are stranded, Indian nationals, stranded on the airports,
05:00where all operations have been stalled in Tarimli.
05:03And they've been asked to leave the airport because they fear that the Kathmandu Airport can come under attack.
05:09We don't want to sound sensational here.
05:11But right now, the word coming in is that at the Kathmandu Airport, the army has stopped protesters from coming in inside.
05:19Let's try and get a word in from Pankaj Das, who's joining us from Kathmandu, Nepal, for more.
05:24Pankaj, you know, there are a lot of people, a lot of Indian nationals, as I speak, who are stuck at the Kathmandu International Airport,
05:32very, very worried, trying to connect with us because they've been told to leave the airport.
05:37Outside is a huge mob, you know, which has gathered.
05:40They're wanting to get inside.
05:42What's the latest that you're getting?
05:44I don't know.
05:46The government has reached the gate to Kaatpandu airport.
05:52But Sena has kept them by stopping.
05:54Sena has put their strength in their power.
05:56That at least, there will be no damage to the airport.

06:04So Sena has managed to support the airport.
06:07And the government's power is still very low.

08:19I see outside of my house, I see my hometown being covered with smoke.
08:26And I hate to think that it will be so much coming tomorrow.
08:32This really is troubling me.
08:35It's troubling you, but do you fear your protest has been taken over by unwanted elements?
08:41Yes.
08:42It's been infiltrated politically? Is that what you fear?
08:45So, I was one of the voices who raised concerns over the social media ban and corruption,
08:52the rampant corruption going on in this country, which led to the September 8th protest.
08:56Our agenda was very simple.
08:58You know, to lift the bans, to ensure freedom of speech is protected,
09:02to ensure the anti-corruption authorities are empowered enough.
09:06But this has completely taken, this has gone to a very dangerous level right now.
09:13And I'm genuinely worried to see what is happening outside in the media, in the news.
09:21Our agenda was very simple.
09:22We wanted to negotiate with the government not to topple it down undemocratically, frankly,
09:27and to incite riots and to burn the buildings that we paid for.
09:33This is completely absurd to me that this has happened.
09:37One of the most disturbing news which has come in just a few hours ago is the death of Jalanath Khanal's wife.
09:45She has passed away.
09:47She was a spouse of a former prime minister.
09:50He was the chairman of the Communist Party of Nepal.
09:54Then former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deoba has been targeted.
09:57His wife has been attacked as well.
10:00What kind of protest is this?
10:02If it is about anti-establishment or anti-government, the government is no longer there in Nepal.
10:09The prime minister has resigned already.
10:12Isn't that what your aim was?
10:13You wanted the government to be toppled.
10:15That has been achieved.
10:16Why target former prime ministers and their family members?
10:20Our aim was to lift the ban on social media to ensure anti-corruption establishments are empowered.
10:33The government decided to kill us on September 8th, which is why our aim shifted to now toppling down the government and bringing those models to justice.
10:42However, people outside of our group, people with various interests in their hands, certainly have influenced this protest.
10:52Right.
10:53And basically, yes, they have influenced them.
10:55One quick question before we are going to let you go.
10:57Because, like you said, this protest was organic.
10:59Many like you had joined it in the spirit of free speech and today are disturbed by what you are seeing outside.
11:05What is it that the lot of you, the Gen Z, because clearly the power of the people, the power of Gen Z was huge, which escalated this entire crisis in Nepal.
11:15And now it's disturbing, it's violent, it's insidious.
11:18What is the lot of you who are going to come together and do to try and assuage the situation that is taking place in your own country?
11:26It's practically burning right now.
11:28Are you planning on something?
11:29Is there something that you're looking at, banding together to maybe stop this anarchy?
11:34We are, we are. We're sending in teams. We're monitoring the buildings which have been set ablaze by the protesters.
11:41We are trying to coordinate. Our team is entirely in the field. I'm staying in my home, trying to monitor all the activities.
11:50Is there a name that you have that you want to take control, that you want that person to take control, to step into the shoes of the former Prime Minister Oli?
11:59Is there a name that you have? This is the person, he should take control?
12:03I do not. I do not have any names. I think the public should decide in a snap election that should be called immediately.
12:12So you are demanding a snap election. That's one of the demands as we have been saying that these are multiple groups.
12:19These are a motley group of individuals who have all come together in the name of Gen Z protesters in Nepal.
12:25Thank you for joining us, Shaswath. We have Ambassador Manjeev Singh Puri also joining us, Indian Ambassador, former Indian Ambassador to Nepal.
12:33Ambassador Puri, how are you looking at these developments in the neighborhood?
12:37Okay, we'll try and connect with Ambassador Puri in just a bit, but Preeti, very, very concerning visuals coming in,
12:46even as reports are suggesting that there is a group of Gen Z protesters who are demanding that the present mayor of Kathmandu should take charge.
12:54There are a number of them who have put up that request, that former rapper who is now the mayor of Kathmandu,
13:03someone who is seen as more acceptable. He is also, in fact, Ambassador Puri is back with us.
13:08Ambassador Puri, how do you look at these developments that are taking place in Nepal?
13:12Ambassador Puri, how do you look at these developments that are taking place in Nepal?
13:31Thank you very much, Maria. I want to tell you that these have to be looked at seriously.
13:35What has happened, and as you ask the questions, you know, has the mob gone really out of control?
13:41Yes, these are all serious matters. But on the other hand, let's just look at it.
13:46It's a situation of people taking things in their own hands in a sense of very, let me say, an element of violence in democracy, which is happening there.
13:57Because what was happening in Nepal, we need to understand that.
14:00You had the two principal parties in the parliament joined together in a combination, which meant that two-thirds of parliament was in the government.
14:08And so what did you have in terms of opposition and the ability to vent from the sources of the parliament itself?
14:15That became problematic. Now, over years, Nepal has had a major issue in terms of its economics.
14:22The young feel frustrated. There's nothing much happening in terms of jobs.
14:26And the top people in the establishment were, in a sense, rotating the prime minister's chairs among themselves and really not giving any space.
14:35Another very important point for Indian viewers is the issue that Nepal is a very globalized country and a country where people are quite empowered as a result of the fact that about 25 percent of the population is overseas.
14:50And I'm not including India. They are all over the world, in the West, in Australia, in Singapore.
14:56Nepal's remittance to GDP ratio is among the five highest in the world.
15:00And so the connectivity with the world has changed people's aspirations, has changed the way people think.
15:06And the young are really feeling that, you know, rent-seeking politics, no, that's not acceptable to them.
15:12They don't have an answer. But their frustrations is what they are venting.
15:16And the social media ban was the thin edge of the wedge. It went over. It was badly mishandled. The police opened fire on the crowd.
15:26But Ambassador Puri, you know, to look at the larger perspective on from where India stands, there seems to be a playbook to all of this.
15:32We saw very similar visuals, very similar, you know, exactly the same scenes play out in Bangladesh just about seven, eight months ago.
15:42Right before a year and a half ago, we saw exactly the same playbook, you know, where Sri Lanka was concerned.
15:48Are bordering countries, all of them in turmoil with very, very similar circumstances? How should India view this?
15:57Sharmaria, I don't think we should make these comparisons in this sort of a manner that you are doing.
16:02This is a case of democracy, in a sense, with a greater degree of vibrancy and governments which were rent-seeking to the core.
16:11That's exactly what happened in Sri Lanka. The government out there was exactly in the same way.
16:17The same thing happened in Nepal here. Bangladesh is quite a different thing with lots of interplays which were taking place out there.
16:24Look what has happened in Sri Lanka. Please see what happened after the mob was allowed to vent its anger and so on.
16:31Back to politics, things are happening in various ways. I personally believe that the Nepalese who struggled for democracy over years and years and finally monarchy was replaced about 20 odd years back.
16:45The ideas of democracy are pretty importantly embedded there. Yes, the way this has happened, these mob attacks, etc., certainly not acceptable.
16:55But I also think that, like Sri Lanka, and that's the parallel to look at. The army is sort of standing at the back. It has the ability. It's moved leaders to safe locations. It has the ability. It's allowing a certain amount of wind.
17:09And I hope that by tomorrow elements of the political process will start. You can see Balan Shah, the mayor, himself saying, who people say is a beneficiary of all this, telling people, now let's calm it. We've got a degree of accountability.
17:23The chief head, the chief head, that of the prime minister has rolled. We're very sorry. We are listening to you. We'll show empathy. We will be with you. And let's try and take things forward because it's our country. We need to build it together.
17:35But Ambassador Puri, the larger question is about the interim government. As you spoke about Balan Shah, of course, one of the most popular faces because Time magazine had named him among the top 100 emerging leaders of the world as well.
17:51How should India be viewing this, particularly after the experience with Muhammad Yunus?
17:57Look, this has nothing to do with Muhammad Yunus in Bangladesh. Let's leave that out. Let me tell you the larger question is democracy in Nepal surviving, our links with the people in Nepal surviving, and our economic links.
18:10We are, this is a country with which we have civilizational links. And I don't see those being disrupted.
18:16Let's look at the hand that you always talk at the Chinese. Are they happy as the only government being dispersed? They can't be. Who is it?
18:23In a sense, if I may use this expression, you know, Nepal has seen globalization in a manner much more than we who had 197 years of colonization.
18:32And with this rapid globalization, you have the Western ideas, etc. come in. In a sense, perhaps woke is playing out in Nepal, woke has become out of fashion in the countries where it began.
18:44That's the nature of it. For us, as long as we continue to have our good relations with the people and with the governments, whoever comes in power, and I have no doubt, everyone will see the good sense in a good relationship with India.
18:57Because we matter. We matter economically. We matter for the people. And we are that great civilizational link with Nepal.
19:05All right. I appreciate you joining us, Ambassador Puri. Thank you there for giving us your time, viewers.
19:09But I just want to go back to the ground situation in Nepal. It doesn't look good at all.
19:14Right now, there are large numbers that have gathered right outside the international airport in Kathmandu, wanting to get inside.
19:22The army has taken over the airport. All operations at the airport have been stalled.
19:26And now it's an eyeball-to-eyeball confrontation where the Nepalese army is concerned and the protesters.
19:33And mind you, the protesters are no longer what one had thought that they were, which was a huge part of Gen Z protesting a social media ban.
19:42And all of that now pales in comparison of what is clearly an insidious plot, not just to dislodge an incumbent government,
19:49but also to went-out ire in the most sinister of fashion, with political leaderships being attacked violently.
19:57All right. Thousands of Nepal's youth have taken to the streets for two consecutive days, defying curfew.
20:04But terrifying visuals, Maria, coming to light.
20:07Absolutely. Very, very disturbing there. And they have sacrificed their young lives for a clean change.
20:13Remember, it has been triggered by social media ban.
20:16This youth protest that is raging across the Himalayan countries, deep-rooted in frustration over lack of economic growth, nepotism and corruption.
20:24Here's a quick wrap-up of this story of why is Nepal witnessing these historic protests.
20:37Nepal is burning.
20:41The government has collapsed.
20:45But protests continue.
20:50They're young and they're angry because they have seen Nepal rot for years.
20:55I'm here to protest about corruption.
21:01The country has gotten so bad that for us youth, there is no grounds for us to stay back in the country.
21:07We were here to participate in the peaceful rally to seek improvement in the country.
21:11But the police and the administration decided to get violent and shoot first with tear gas and then with bullets.
21:17Our demand and desire is for peace and end to corruption so that the people can actually work and live back in the country.
21:23We will work to continue putting pressure on the government.
21:29Nepal, a Himalayan country of 30 million people, is known for its turbulent politics.
21:36It has seen more than a dozen governments since it transitioned to a republic after abolishing its 239-year-old monarchy in 2008.
21:47And that too came after a decade-long civil war.
21:51Even then, this protest is the worst unrest in decades.
21:56I don't think this is a fight about monarchy or anything.
22:03This is rather a fight against corrupted system.
22:06We want directly elected PM and an interim government.
22:10That is the actual want from our country.
22:12It is an anti-corruption movement without any other vested interest towards monarchy, any other inclination towards monarchy.
22:18And, yeah, it might have started from a social media ban, but that was not the major issue.
22:23It was rather the corruption that has been going on and people are frustrated with it.
22:27The last straw was the social media ban where people felt their voices were oppressed.
22:31These protests, the organisers claim, are a reflection of generational frustration at poor economic opportunities in the Himalayan country.
22:42A World Bank report shows that the unemployment rate for youth aged 15 to 24 in Nepal was 20.8% in 2024.
22:53Nepal's economy is heavily reliant on remittance money sent by Nepalese living abroad.
22:59More than a third, that is 33.1% of Nepal's GDP, came from personal remittances.
23:07And that number has been on a steady rise over the past three decades.
23:13As people in general battled with the economy, a viral online movement against Nepal kids, politicians, children,
23:21showing off their lavish lifestyles, fuelled further anger among people.
23:25September 8th, September 8th, September 8th.
23:27The last nail in the coffin was the government's 4th September decision to block 26 social media platforms,
23:35including Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, X and YouTube.
23:41About two dozen social network platforms widely used in Nepal were repeatedly given notices
23:47to register their companies officially in the country.
23:50They were asked to appoint grievance handlers and remove flagged content.
23:56Only five companies, including TikTok and Viber, complied with the order.
24:01And when the others failed, they were blocked in the first week of September.
24:06Social media has been the platform for protest and all protest organizations since the last two decades.
24:13K.P. Sharma only miscalculated its power and banning it led to complete chaos in Nepal.

24:36Because after attacking political leadership, after attacking political institutions, private institutions,
24:42the protesters have turned their ire to airports right now.
24:45While an eyeball-to-eyeball confrontation continues at the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu,

24:53Protesters have set vehicles on fire just outside the Gautam Buddha International Airport in Bhairava, Nepal.
25:01And Bhairava, just for the benefit of our viewers, is roughly around four hours,
25:06which is around 192 kilometers from Kathmandu, and that is the distance between the two cities.
25:13And that is the second international airport.
25:16So after the entire chaos is playing out at the Tribhuvan Airport,
25:22there is Gautam Buddha Airport in Bhairava now being targeted by the protesters.
25:28So let's bring in our guests now, Preeti.
25:30Well, just, you know, we're going to just quickly cut across to these visuals,
25:34these visuals that you see of arson viewers, anarchy arson,
25:37now not just limited to Kathmandu, but across Nepal.
25:40International Airport, Bhairava, right outside, visuals coming in,
25:44vehicles being set on fire, arson reported, violence reported, complete anarchy being reported.
25:49I want to cut across to advocate who's joining us from Kathmandu, Arun Gawali with us.
25:55Arun, would you give us a sense of what is really happening on the ground right now?
26:00Because repeatedly we are being joined by, you know, protesters, the youth that were part till yesterday.
26:06Now they are saying that this is not us.
26:08Somebody has, all elements have completely hijacked and taken over our protest.
26:15All right, we don't have Arun with us, but these visuals are disconcerting.
26:19Because, Maria, what clearly is now happening, because nobody is quite in control,
26:24the army has taken over airports.
26:26There is a pushback, but after yesterday's carnage where 22 youth were killed
26:32when the army and the police had opened fire, the army now in restraint.
26:38And, all right, let's quickly cut across right now.
26:41There is a press conference, let's...
26:45In all, 68 nomination papers were received till the last date for submission of nomination papers.
26:57After scrutiny, nomination papers filed by Shri Buchi Reddy, Sudarshan Reddy and Shri C.P. Radhakrishnan were found valid.
27:08As you are aware, in the vice presidential election, all members of parliament, including the nominated members,
27:18are eligible to cast their votes.
27:21There are 788 electors, 245 from Rajya Sabha and 543 from Lok Sabha.
27:29There are 6 vacancies in Rajya Sabha and 1 vacancy in Lok Sabha.
27:35Thus, there are 781 electors.
27:38The polling for the vice presidential election, 2025, which commenced at 10 a.m. today, the 9th of September, 2025,
27:50in room number F101 Vasudha, 1st floor, Parliament House, New Delhi, closed at 5 p.m.
27:59Out of the 781 electors, 767 electors cast their votes before closure of the poll, i.e. 5 p.m.
28:10The total elector turnout was, accordingly, 98.2 percent.
28:16Only one ballot box was used for the poll, which was sealed immediately after the close of poll at 5 p.m.
28:23in the presence of the authorized representatives of the contesting candidates and election observers.
28:31The counting of votes commenced at 6 p.m.
28:34The ballot box was opened in the presence of the authorized representatives of the contesting candidates,

48:35confrontational in
48:37the conventional
48:38sense and what we
48:39saw with Mr.
48:39Jagdeep Dhankar was
48:40you know until the
48:42last session it was
48:43pretty you know
48:44boisterous at times
48:46now the second part
48:47on this is really
48:49the fact that Mr.
48:50Radha Krishnan is
48:51not a Modi Amit
48:53Shah era BJP
48:54politician at all
48:55he belongs to the
48:56Vajpayee era he
48:58belongs to the you
48:59know to the RSS
49:00family and he comes
49:03from a culture where
49:05he has friends across
49:07political parties in
49:08fact he's got very
49:08few enemies even
49:09those who are his
49:10political opponents
49:11don't have a major
49:13problem with him he's
49:15always been very
49:15cultured where he has

49:18rivals as well so I

49:23having said that if
49:25we were to look at
49:26Mr. Modi and Mr.
49:28Amit Shah choosing a
49:29candidate to be the
49:30vice president it's
49:32extremely unlikely that
49:33Mr. CPR would have
49:34been their first
49:35choice so clearly this
49:36is something which the
49:37RSS is getting their
49:39way in but you know
49:40just stay with me so

51:15CP 11 so 438 so they have got
51:1814 extra votes I think seven or
51:21eight independent and smaller
51:22parties are there so we will have
51:24to see how many MPs did cross
51:27vote from the India block to the
51:31NDA of course I'm as I mentioned
51:32from strategy to outreach to floor
51:36management to execution I think the
51:40opposition could have done better
51:41it's a moral victory of sorts of
51:43course the the margin is lower this
51:45time because the strength of the
51:47opposition is fairly high in the
51:49Lok Sabha after the BJP received
51:51setback in the 2024 Lok Sabha
51:54elections but of course they have to
51:55go back to the drawing board think and
51:57ponder as to how election after
51:59election the advantage which they
52:01had gained after the Lok Sabha they
52:03have been losing the steam in
52:06Haryana Maharashtra then the Delhi
