00:00Government officials are gathering in Taipei to advocate for Taiwan's inclusion in the International Civil Aviation Organization, or IKO, as well as the United Nations as a whole.
00:11The IKO has a big assembly meeting coming up at the end of September, but Taiwan has not been invited.
00:17Government officials today outlined plans to change that, saying Taiwan hopes to contribute to these organizations.
00:30Taiwan has not been a member of the UN since 1971, when China's seat was transferred from the Republic of China, Taiwan's official name, to the People's Republic of China in Beijing.
00:45It has since been excluded from the IKO, which is a UN agency, apart from once attending as a guest in 2013 under the name Chinese Taipei.
00:54This week, several legislators from across party lines will travel to New York to show support for Taiwan during this year's UN General Assembly.
01:02And later this month, Taiwan will send a delegation to the IKO Assembly to push for its inclusion.
01:07We have been monitoring to protect飛航us安全. We can also protect飛航us安全.
01:16So IKO should have to a Brisbane參與 for Taiwan to agree that IKO will ensure the international national security of all countries and its generation of development and sustainable growth.
01:26It will also ensure the safety of all the world's military...
01:29So飛航us safety is not international.
01:33Calls for Taiwan's inclusion in the IKO comes amid air safety tussles between Taipei and Beijing.
01:39One is a contested flight path between Taiwan and China that's led to what Taipei calls
01:44dangerous commercial flights. Several U.S. Congress members have sent a letter to the
01:49organization to ask it to allow Taiwan to attend its upcoming assembly. They say the decision to
01:54exclude Taiwan undermines aviation safety and that its presence could help it handle China's
01:59changes to flight routes near its borders. IKO did not respond to Taiwan Plus' request for comment on
02:04Taiwan's participation. This is not the first time Taiwan has advocated for its inclusion in these
02:10international organizations. These are efforts that have been going on for many years as Taiwan seeks
02:15to present itself as a rightful contributor in the hopes of building up its voice on the global stage.
