00:003,500 ANZ bank employees and 1,000 contractors will lose their jobs over the next 12 months
00:08in one of the biggest restructures by a major bank in years.
00:13The Big Four bank said the overhaul was designed to simplify operations,
00:18improve risk management practices and deliver for its customers.
00:22There are lots of communities that no longer have a bank or maybe only have one.
00:26But then kind of if you flip that around, a lot of people, if you think about the last time you went to a bank,
00:31into an actual branch, for a lot of people it's a really long period.
00:34ANZ Chief Executive Nuno Matos said the major restructuring had already started
00:40and acknowledged the news would be difficult for some staff.
00:44The number of branches is reducing, the number of kind of customer service contacts is also reducing.
00:50The way people deal with their banks is increasingly digital.
00:52The job cuts represent nearly 10% of ANZ's workforce
00:57and have been condemned by the finance sector union,
01:00who said the restructuring was only to increase profits.
01:04The bank reported a 16% lift in profits to $3.64 billion in May of 2025.
01:13The process is estimated to be completed by September 2026.
