00:00that feels good amazing look at all this space solid as a rock thomas first things first we
00:09start clearing things shall we let me take my jacket off most of us would love to be able to
00:14rethink the space in our homes to deep clean that's a big patch of mold to declutter got about
00:2260 pairs of shoes here and tackle those neglected diy jobs but we don't always have the time
00:29money or confidence to get on top of things there's quite a lot mess and that's where me and my crack
00:36team of experts come in we'll show you some brilliant hacks you can see this this whole
00:41dead space has been transformed that won't break the budget helping and inspiring you to make
00:46life-changing improvements i've never seen it look so gorgeous in just two days oh my god
00:53absolutely brilliant
00:59my experts today are carla price i've got a lot to sink my teeth into the decluttering expert with
01:09years of experience you know when the coat comes off you mean business i mean business and creative
01:15carpenter asher edwards solid and secure who prides himself on being a perfectionist and it slots in
01:23like it came with the house together we're taking on one of the biggest declutters we've ever done the
01:37person we're about to watch now is a guy called robin he lives on his own he's a single dad and he
01:41also i hear struggles to let go of things so there's going to be a bit of clutter what we're about to see
01:46it's also going to be you having to convince robin to get rid of some of his stuff let's see how much
01:52stuff he has hi i'm robin i live in a one bedroom basement flat i've been here nearly five years
01:59i live by myself but my son comes down every other week in my previous flat i had a large loft to
02:08keep things kind of hidden away since i've had to move into somewhere a lot smaller i've obviously had
02:13to kind of cut back and downsize but slowly over the years i've gone to getting more stuff and slowly
02:21it's gone on top of me to the point where let's just say um i'm a bit saturated bless him so this
02:29is my living rooms clash crafting area arts and crafts have become a massive part of my life in the
02:37last couple of years they give me kind of like a fun thing to do instead of just getting home and
02:42sitting on the sofa watching the tv but it's got to that point now where it's actually adding to
02:48the clutter i definitely need to bring it under control i'm often losing things like my keys
02:55it's not a great look having to call into work and say sorry i'm running late because i'm locked in my
03:00flat so uh yeah that must be so hard to live like that collar obviously there's a lot of stuff as such
03:09but also a lot of furniture so i found these chairs dumped around the side from my new office
03:15i've got some beautiful tables if they're the right way up they'd be great makeshift projector
03:21screen for those movie nights which would be great if i had a sofa to sit on so this is my bedroom it
03:27will become the halfway house between you know things coming in like washing that's been finished
03:33and then unfortunately we end up with things like the floor drobe over there he's like got no room
03:39so about a year and a half ago i was diagnosed with adhd which is something i suspected for a
03:47number of years and um if i'm being honest kind of helped explain to myself kind of a bit of the
03:54reason behind things i do and especially things i don't do this is going to feel rewarding if we get
04:00this done anything that can possibly help me with as stress-free environment as possible is
04:06it's definitely going to be a massive benefit
04:08i think this is going to be one of the biggest organization sessions that is a lot of stuff
04:16the bedroom i mean we're going to get a lot of that stuff off the floor he was standing literally
04:21in between the bed and like trying to walk like this but i feel like that's configured wrong i feel
04:25like we need to move that bed around somehow asha and just reshape that bedroom and create some more
04:30space in the living room he's got the dining table or a table behind him with all these arts and crafts
04:36that needs to be designated to a dining table for when his son comes over and then he also needs
04:41somewhere to do his arts and crafts so if we do reconfigure the bedroom maybe we could put like
04:45a crafts table in there the first thing i'm going to do is sort out all the clothes which are on the
04:50floor and put them back into the wardrobe that will then give us space to create that craft station
04:55which you can work your magic on i've spotted some of the furniture in the living room that i might
05:01be able to use as the base for the crafting table and i'm going to make sure it's nice and big
05:06because the crafting table he's got right now is far too small robin like a few of us if we admit
05:12it personally i'm the same loses his keys and his phone puts it down somewhere forgets where it is
05:17i'm the worst for it so i'm going to create something in the hallway what my dad created for me
05:22as you first walk in you can't miss it keys phone walk through and then whenever you need to find it
05:27you know where it is a place for everything and everything in its place ah like over the next
05:35two days we're going to help robin reclaim his flat and create more space for both him and his son to
05:40enjoy but before asha and i take on the fixes the place needs a serious declutter
05:47good morning hi robin i'm carla come into the living room thank you with such a big job on her
05:56hands right i am going to get my coat off carla wastes no time in tackling robin's overflowing
06:02dining table tell me what's on this table a bit of everything projects i've started so i've got my pens
06:08toys knickknacks combs you know it's always going to have a comb comb to hand and do you use this as
06:16well for dining that's the hypothetical plan okay right i've got a few things to help us to put
06:23all bits into categories is this where you find that it becomes a bit overwhelming not knowing how
06:29to start yeah there's just too much and then i move stuff and then that gets on top of other bits
06:36when we touch something let's think about what we're going to do with it okay
06:45the less things that we have then the more mental space that then frees up for us as well so yeah
06:51everyone gets that point and tries to do it all themselves and i think you just have to one day
06:56think right asking for help isn't the bad thing getting help is a great thing so ah the hardest thing
07:02is often to start and that's what we're doing right now we can move on to another zone
07:18the sofa i'm starting to just try and remember what it looks
07:20people say about finding things down the back of the sofa and we're actually trying to find a sofa
07:30behind the back of everything else see this is one of my favorite boxes so i'm gonna put this in a
07:36box is that for crafting no it's just a really nice box robin i can see that you're getting a little
07:43bit distracted by things which is easy to do because some of this you probably haven't realized you had
07:50you want to make decisions on things and i want to introduce something that i think is going to help
07:55keep you focused and that is using a time lapse video the goal is to clear the sofa so we can see
08:03the cushions underneath yeah let's set that up
08:07that's right ah my trousers creating a time lapse video of yourself cleaning can be a game changer
08:20if you find it hard to stay focused it compresses every bit of progress into seconds transforming even
08:26the toughest job into an achievement you can watch unfold carlo robin i think i'm ready for you
08:34robin so far we can see the sofa sit down let's enjoy the sofa
08:45what was it like knowing that you had a bit of accountability with a time lapse in the background
08:51filming you first of all not having the phone in my hand to distract me was good and kind of thinking
08:57to myself oh i've got to get to the end of it because if i don't get to the end of it then i'm not
09:01going to get the whole picture of start to finish in the bedroom robin finds the build-up of clothes
09:08overwhelming so carla's next job is to give him the motivation to work through them robin there's
09:13a bit of a situation going on here you know it's in transition it is just a case of stuff that i've
09:20washed and haven't had a chance to put away and then can't get into the wardrobe can't get into the
09:25drawers next thing you know it's just this own ecosystem we've got a technique that we can use to
09:30help keep us motivated we're going to set a timer for 10 minutes and just see how much we can get
09:36through in those 10 minutes yeah let's go so we got our tops bottoms donate and rehome
09:46setting a timer when cleaning is incredibly helpful for someone that's easily distracted
09:51that's two and a half minutes robin we are making great progress as it turns it into a manageable
09:57time-limited challenge instead of a never-ending chore yeah let's not get distracted yeah
10:05that's it timer we can start to see the floor yeah having the boxes definitely helps to kind of
10:12separate it and then i can take a box at a time to deal with instead of the whole bed but i'm going
10:17to leave you to just finish this off yep because set yourself another little timer if you want i've got
10:22this you've got you absolutely have this robin yes yes look at the floor look at the bed everything
10:35is in its rightful home it's good it's really good i can now see kind of the way forward which is great
10:45with day one drawing to a close there's one more job in the hallway that carla wants to tackle
10:51i've given this rug a really good vacuum but now i need someone big and strong to help me
10:58beat the rest of this dust out i think i've got the right tool for the job i think that will do the job
11:10what i can definitely see the dust coming out of that to keep your rugs fresh and dust free yes it's
11:16essential to beat them every few months as it loosens up deep-seated dirt and allergens that vacuums
11:23might miss get out that stuff robin has made amazing progress in just one day
11:34but there's still a bit more to do so carla stayed an extra day to help him get over the line
11:38it may have taken slightly longer than expected but what a transformation the clutter on the dining
11:49table has been streamlined and neatly organized into containers the sofa has been cleared and cleaned
11:56making space for him to relax and the pile of clothes on his bedroom floor have been sorted
12:03through with items he doesn't need donated to charity and before carla calls it a day she of course
12:14leaves asher and i some instructions for tomorrow
12:25over the past two days carla has been working with robin to reset his home
12:29and create a realistic plan for keeping things tidier going forward her hard work is done but for
12:34asher and me it's about to begin today asher is going to create some extra shelving in the living
12:41room alcoves and upcycle some of robin's existing furniture to create a crafting desk in his bedroom
12:48we're here i'll also try my hand at a bit of upcycling build a new dining table and create something to
12:54house robin's keys to stop him losing them whoa whoa whoa whoa that's got to be the biggest clear
13:00up i've ever seen wait have we even walked into the right house what are you thinking
13:06these alcoves are too empty for my liking need to utilize that properly but this big one
13:11it can't stay there we've got to get rid of that thinking shelving in there aren't you
13:14you know it you know we need it right if i tip the top down to you yeah be careful of the walls as
13:21well so we've got no paint on the van i think you might need to go up yeah up up up up there you
13:27go yes and our furniture reshuffle doesn't end there and remember he wants the living room to
13:33be back to a living room and he loves his crafting he wants a crafting table in here you know as well
13:38as i do it's not going to fit either side so i think this bed should come over to this corner
13:42leaving all this free space and that will allow us to put a crafting table in ready let's go oh it's
13:48nice i like all right it'll be a bit of a squeeze can you go up if these were my drawers would be so
13:54heavy because i've got about a thousand pairs of pants i don't need to know how many pants it's the
13:59one item i love to buy pants yep and up oh yes so far so good that was absolutely sublime that's it
14:13and now look at all this space literally moving those two pieces of furniture has opened up this room
14:18all you need is some of them some of them don't show me up you started it don't show me up in fact
14:25whilst you're feeling strong i've got a note here little surprise from carla mark and asher
14:29please build some shelves for these and that means the wardrives right well i'll leave you to that
14:34you all good no problem after getting himself told up asher starts on the shelves for robin's newly
14:43organized clothes and my first job is to find a solution to him constantly losing his keys
14:50this here is a wall hanging essentials shelf the reason why we're hanging on the wall is to get
14:55things off the floor and also it's always visible for him so what i'm going to do is put these hooks
15:00on the back of this as so we will hang the keys like that this is going to hang in the hallway as
15:08soon as you walk through the door so he can't miss it as soon as he goes in there's nowhere
15:11else you can place it other than here
15:18ta-da done now it's just getting the other ones in
15:24in the bedroom asher's storming ahead with the new wardrobe storage as per carla's request extra shelves
15:32i mean that's the least i can do for her because she's done such a good job organizing everything
15:37so this wardrobe can be dedicated to the clothing boxes and the second wardrobe for the hanging
15:42gear that's the job well done back outside with robin's new key storage sorted my next job is to
15:51make something special for when his son comes to visit now this stall somebody was getting rid of it
15:57so we got it for free and i thought this is a perfect stall in terms of sat at an arts and
16:04crafts table for robin's little boy but that's a little bit hard it's a little bit damaged it's got
16:09paint stains on it take that aside it's actually very nice so what am i going to do of course i'm
16:14going to cover the top with a bit of foam wadding and then the finish this lovely piece of fabric
16:22watch the magic happen i'm going to draw around the outside of the seat bread knife to cut through
16:29foam just gently cut around the line
16:35that should be just about done use it as a frisbee if you like so what i'm going to do with this
16:42double-sided velcro tape i'm going to stick the cushion lay the wadding flat turn the whole thing over
16:51wrap the wadding round the bottom of the stall staple it in and then cut off the excess
17:00and that there is the wadding done but it don't look great does it no so that's where the fabric
17:07comes in that will be our finish right that is nice and taut perfect so now what we're going to do
17:19we're going to work our way around the edges stapling and cutting
17:28and there you have it
17:30a stall that now looks trendy like you bought it from an interior design shop
17:35nice and taut comfortable because it's got the cushion
17:39look at that front of your arts and crafts table a stall upcycled the right way
17:51we've got the stall now all we need is a crafting table and that's where asher comes in we all know
17:57robin had a load of furniture inside his flat and i didn't want to get rid of all of it because i've
18:03seen a little bit of potential with two particular units so my plan is to place this unit on the left
18:12and there's a unit similar in height that i'm going to use to the right and with a piece of
18:17ply i'm going to bridge the two pieces together with a long piece of ply creating a whole new crafting desk
18:25for robin asher cuts the desktop from plywood and can finally give robin and his son the new crafting
18:33area they desperately need okay time to slot this worktop in place perfect because the worktop
18:44is covering over the radiator it's important that i cut out these slots on the worktop and that allows
18:51the heat to circulate and ventilate and keep the room nice and warm in the living room i'm also on
19:04table building duty carl has left this note for us to fix up this table robin is very resourceful he
19:11found this table it was getting thrown out and he's brought it to the house and we can really
19:15put this to good use so that i think just goes in like that i'm going to get a washer a nut that
19:23there is done it's not the lightest tables into that bay perfectly that there is perfect over halfway
19:34through the day and ashes still has to create some much needed storage in the living room carlo and robin
19:41have done a really good job clearing all of that space because they've done such a good job it means
19:46that there's so many boxes that we need to organize and those alcoves are the perfect place for that
19:52at the end of the day there's not going to be one wall without a shelf because we need all the storage
19:58we can get
19:59make sure you don't go too deep otherwise you'll surprise your neighbors
20:12then it's just the case of putting the plugs in the hole and now screwing the baton
20:20now hopefully this should
20:25absolutely wonderful
20:29with ashes new storage in place he calls it a day
20:34our legend what a day
20:36all right see you soon well done today smashed it see you there
20:40ash is off but i'm staying behind to add a few finishing touches
20:45right they're the last ones
20:47in just three days and with a limited budget has the clean it fix it team managed to turn robin's flat
21:02into an organized creative haven for him and his son
21:05it's not a good man
21:07robin how are you i'm good mate nice to see you coming to your home
21:13when we arrived robin's hallway was in much need of a deep clean and had no convenient place for him to leave his keys
21:19but now thanks to carla the whole space is spotless
21:25the rug is dust free and my new shelf means that robin will never lose his keys again
21:34oh hello this is slightly different that's tidy i like it it's going to be very handy
21:43especially me losing my plethora of keys exactly you can't walk anywhere in the house
21:47and put anything anywhere because you're going to literally walk past it that's perfect i might have
21:51to use it right now yes perfect there you go he's using it get in my man that's what you want to see
21:57this must make you just feel a bit more easy it was the kind of thing yeah as soon as i get home
22:01the first thing i see is clutter and immediately it sets my mood off so it's just like ah i don't
22:06want to be here i just want to really turn around and walk out it's like it feels like a bit like
22:10you're drowning because you're out of control you kind of you know you can see what you need to do but
22:14yeah just getting there is uh is the hardest part well let's see what else we've got for you
22:19because obviously the hallway now looks better let's go into your bedroom and see what we've
22:22done there shall we okay before robin's bedroom was piled high with clothes making it difficult to
22:29move around but once again carla has worked her magic robin's clothes have been sorted through and
22:37neatly organized into boxes stored away onto asha's new shelves the bed has been moved to make the
22:46space more functional and my upcycled stall and asha's new crafting desk have created a designated
22:53space for robin and his son to spend quality time together wow now that's now that is handy that is
23:07very handy vertical space that's good i think that's kind of like the thing that i've been envisioning
23:15is just having that space wow yeah that's much better obviously this little stall we upcycled got
23:26this in i'll wrap some fabric around it for you so your boy can sit on there next to you when you're
23:30doing your arts and crafts and stuff all your storage is up here you can keep your tools in there
23:35the bed just just the bed being over there how much more spacious is it feeling here it's great i did
23:40kind of dabble with it in this space before but the rest of the furniture just meant it was too
23:45cluttered so i think the radio and the radiator as well being where it is and i can see you've
23:50got the grills cut out which is great when you're standing in here robin and you look around in your
23:55bedroom and you remember how it was when your boy comes to stay with you for the weekend do you feel
24:00like this is going to make a real difference to your life definitely because i can see space and i can
24:04you know i can already picture him you know getting some toys out and playing with them
24:10and then me telling him to put them away because that's what sensible people do
24:14when it's just the two of you and you've got those moments together he's now so much more controllable
24:19so much more livable and just more of a happy place i think the kind of word you said is controllable
24:24because the times i do have with him are kind of i'm realizing more important because you know he's
24:30gone from being down here and to here and then suddenly he's up here so all those kind of firsts and
24:36those moments just are so much more significant so yeah having the headspace so i don't miss them
24:45is yeah it's priceless and also robin go and check out that cupboard over there okay
24:49oh cool that is that is perfect that is so much better shelves i can actually see stuff i can actually
25:00get to stuff and do you know what the main thing
25:03i can't remember the last time the doors actually closed let's go check the lounge out even there's
25:13more robin's final surprise is the living room when we arrived this space wasn't fit for purpose
25:20the dining table and sofa were unusable and a lack of suitable storage meant robin's crafting equipment
25:27and collectibles were everywhere but what a difference three days can make thanks to carla the clutter
25:35has been organized into containers and arranged onto ash's new alcove storage the sofa has been cleared and
25:42cleaned creating a space for robin to relax and the new and improved dining table means that there's now a
25:49designated area for him to eat and play ball games with his son
26:01i can see floor i can see yeah store again amazing storage so having that place to store things is
26:10fantastic and the boxes up here you've got a lot of stuff yeah we know that your figurines etc all we're
26:16doing is trying to create a more organized version of you and so you you can keep your stuff your wild
26:22and wacky stuff and all the stuff with your craft stuff in the boxes and your figurines we want you
26:27to keep that but we just want it to be a way off the floor safer for you safer for the little one
26:32yeah and just have more of a home back as well i now can look forward to just walking you know
26:36walking in after a day's work thinking oh i might do arts and crafts and then actually sit down and think
26:41do you know what i might watch a movie or might listen to some music might read a book and i don't
26:47feel suffocated suffocate yeah there were times that i would think i have got home and sat in my car
26:56outside just kind of putting off that inevitable when i could be in here kind of relaxing just feels
27:02like that that literal kind of like the phrase weight off your shoulders i think the first thing i'll
27:08be doing is ringing around a couple of mates saying you know you know next friday next thursday come
27:12play some board games it's going to be a game changer enjoy it my man cheers bring in give it all that
27:18one lots of love pal enjoy it thank you again man okay see you later
27:22i think it's going to take a while to to kind of sink in and i feel calm and kind of grounded which you
27:38know is something i haven't had for a long time now it's in this state i'm more even more motivated to
27:45keep it this way and just enjoy it i can have friends over when my son's over i can focus on the
27:52time i have with him it's yeah it's a game changer you can just see the release just come away from
28:01robin just the fact that he can see his floor that's what he said the fact he can have games night with
28:06his friends and do crafts with his son with actual space things are in boxes he seems so happy and i'm
28:12so happy for him what's a moment
