00:00Looking like they have the personnel to play a lot of man coverage and be successful at it this season.
00:07Marcus Jones signals for the fair catch.
00:10Off the punt from A.J. Cole.
00:13All tied at 7.
00:15Second quarter on CBS.
00:21The NFL on CBS is sponsored by AT&T.
00:27Connecting changes everything.
00:31All-State.
00:32You're in good hands.
00:35And by Ram Trucks.
00:38Nothing stops Ram.
00:440-1 AFC Divisional Round Game.
00:47The Tuck Game.
00:47One of the most infamous postseason games ever.
00:51New England winning.
00:52Going on to the Super Bowl to take on Archer and the Rams.
00:54You think about that game?
00:55If the Raiders won, you're going to win a Super Bowl potentially?
00:58You will.
00:59Yeah, sometimes I believe that we're living in a simulation.
01:02And yes, in an alternate timeline, life could have been much, much different.
01:08But here we are.
01:09You can see Archer maybe doing all kinds of commercials.
01:12Archer the pitch man.
01:13Archer the Super Bowl champion.
01:16But it just didn't work out.
01:17There's Travion Henderson taking on tacklers.
01:21Another penalty flag thrown here.
01:22It was a clean operation early, but things have slowed down a little bit.
01:27Ten-yard penalty.
01:28Repeat first out.
01:29Austin Hooper.
01:31Second hold penalty against the Patriots.
01:34Now, the Kraft family.
01:38Robert on your left, Jonathan on your right, making the change.
01:42Again, we were here for that last Sunday of the season, last season, when it just seems so dark.
01:46They make the change.
01:47Gerard Mayo out.
01:48Mike Rabel in.
01:50It feels so different.
01:52They spent a ton of money arching the offseason, over $360 million in free agency.
01:59I hope that it all translates on the field beginning today.
02:02A little play action.
02:03Henderson underneath taking on tacklers.
02:06You know, the hierarchy arch in terms of the decision-making here is going to be interesting as well.
02:21Elliott Wolfe, second year that he has taken the reins.
02:24Ryan Cowden brought in as the assistant general manager.
02:27Mike Rabel will have a lot of say in terms of the personnel as well.
02:32Second and 16 from the 21.
02:40Raiders coming.
02:42Patriots pick it up.
02:43Mays pass is caught.
02:46What a half.
02:47Kayshawn Booty is putting together for the Patriots a pickup of 22.
02:54Well, it really is.
02:55You know, you come out of the offseason, and a lot of the stories that are written in the paper, in the magazines,
03:02always have such a great positive spin.
03:05And you never know, is it really going to work out that way in the start of the season?
03:08And so much good stuff has been written about the offseason that Booty has had for the Patriots.
03:14And so far, at least in this game, it's all come true.
03:17He has a really strong connection.
03:19A connection, and you can see that Drake May already has a lot of trust and booty down the field.
03:26Stevenson running off there at the left side of the offensive line.
03:31Devin White, one of the new pieces to this Raiders defense as we check in with Aditi.
03:35Spira, the Raiders have told us that Landon Roberts is questionable with an elbow injury.
03:44He left the field having given his teammates a very strong pep talk, however.
03:48Robert's coming in over from Pittsburgh.
03:53The free agent acquisition started his career with the Patriots in 2016.
03:58And the Raiders hoping that they're going to get him back.
04:00Second and four.
04:01Hand off Stevenson.
04:02Going to get a little bit closer.
04:04Maybe within a yard.
04:05As that clock running down, close to five minutes left in the half.
04:12I sort of expected coming into this game for Josh McDaniels really to maybe get that running game going a little bit stronger.
04:21I remember the last time McDaniels played against Pete Carroll when he was with the Raiders up in Seattle.
04:27I mean, they just pounded him with Josh Jacobs.
04:30Jacobs ended up with a walk-off 79-yard touchdown.
04:33And the Spiro so far, they really haven't been able to get that run game going.
04:39It's been mostly Drake May dropping back to throw the football.
04:44Pitch play, Stevenson, boy, he was lit up.
04:47What a play by Pratt.
04:51And it was Jamal Adams as well making that first contact.
04:56Adams reunited with Pete Carroll.
04:59And on fourth down, New England keeping their offense on the field.
05:01You saw that last, you know, the last time they were in a short-yarded situation.
05:06Lined up for a tush-bush type of play and ended up giving it to Henderson on the outside.
05:12This time, Drake May in shotgun on fourth and short.
05:16Looks like Mike Reagan was going to think about it a little bit more as New England's going to take a timeout.
05:22First of three.
05:26As they will ponder their strategy.
05:28Fourth and one coming up in a tie game.
05:30Four and change left before halftime.
05:33Back in 30 seconds.
05:35Seven dollars for coffee?
05:37Nah.
05:38How about Sonic's salted caramel toffee iced coffee with cold foam for only $2.99?
05:44It's the fancy without the pricey.
05:46Do you want to live free?
05:50Lowe's knows when you start grilling, the guest list starts growing.
05:54That's why we help you get everything you need and more.
05:56Mind if I crash the party?
05:58Jack Prescott.
06:00To help make the most out of every gathering this fall.
06:02Appreciate you guys.
06:03We know Mike Rabel is a coach who rolls the dice on fourth down.
06:14But then no man's part of the field.
06:17Fourth and one.
06:18They go for it.
06:19Fade to Stevenson.
06:21May put some air under it and it's incomplete.
06:24And there's the flag.
06:27Matt Collins, first time he's really been targeted in this half.
06:31And the Raiders can't believe it.
06:39Caillou, Blue Kelly, first year starter, was the man in the coverage.
06:43That's interference.
06:45Defense from the 36.
06:48Automatic first step.
06:50This is tough.
06:51Initially, you know, that's a tough, really a fine line right now.
07:01Right there between, you know, pass interference and both guys fighting for the football.
07:07His head really doesn't turn around to play the ball as much.
07:11But he gets into that situation because eyes were bad at the beginning of the play.
07:16He got beat and then had to be in a recovery mode to try to make the play down the field.
07:21Aggressive call on fourth down by Josh McDaniels.
07:25Pop Douglas going backwards.
07:27Excellent pursuit by the Raiders.
07:30Eric Stokes.
07:32Jamal Adams getting there for the Raiders.
07:34And you can always count on Sundays with the NFL on CBS and Paramount+.
07:42So the 22-yard penalty on Kelly on a fourth and short gets a fresh set of downs for Drake May and his Patriots offense.
07:51Kelly, one of the young pieces in the corner position for the Raiders, making his first career start in the NFL.
07:59Young, untested corners, but that's kind of how Pete Carroll likes it.
08:04And he's got a great track record for developing the talent on the outside.
08:10Josh McDaniels goes a little bit deeper into his playbook.
08:12Little shovel pass here made to Henderson.
08:16Malcolm Koontz coming back from that devastating knee injury.
08:20Third down coming up for McDaniels and company.
08:23Still really haven't seen Stephon Diggs make that big of an impact.
08:31You know, it's been May going to his, kind of his trusted guys who he went to last year.
08:38Whether it's Booty or the backs or Douglas lining up in the slot.
08:42This time Diggs lining up inside.
08:48May fires complete.
08:50It is Diggs.
08:52But he is wrapped up short of the first down.
08:56Well played by that Vegas defense.
09:00And another fourth down for Mike Vrabel.
09:02And it looks.
09:06Soon they'll take it down to the two-minute warning here.
09:09And then we'll see the decision potentially from Vrabel.
09:12Looking at the clock.
09:15I mean, they're going to try and get him to jump off sides.
09:18They should have gotten lined up earlier so they can at least get a fake count.
09:27Vrabel barking in the direction of the officials on that far side.
09:33Officials talking about something here.
09:35Play clock was down to nine as we get to the two-minute warning.
09:37Here's the two-minute warning.
09:39Two minutes remaining in the first half.
09:42All right.
09:42Everyone's going to catch their breath.
09:44Late stage is first half in Foxboro.
09:47You're watching NFL Kickoff presented by YouTube TV.
09:50The NFL on CBS is sponsored by Little Caesars.
09:59The official pizza sponsor of the NFL.
10:03And by Chewy.
10:05For life with pets, there's Chewy with everything.
10:08Wet weather.
10:14It's already been a little bit of a factor in this kicking game.
10:17Andy Borigalis, the rookie, missed from 40.
10:22And he'll try again here from 39.
10:25Trying to get back in the good graces of his new head coach.
10:29And a good snap, good hold.
10:31And this time, the rookie kicker is perfect to get the Patriots their first lead.
10:42New England and Las Vegas on a rainy day in Foxboro.
10:51Coming up on the Verizon Halftime Report, J.B. Nate, Matt Ryan, and Coach Cower
10:55standing by in New York to get you caught up around the league, scores and highlights.
10:59It's all coming up on the Verizon Halftime Report.
11:02Taking a little peek at that scoreboard.
11:04Some interesting numbers from around the league so far.
11:08Dylan Lowby skirts his way across the 30 to the 36-yard line.
11:17Oh, Hunter Henry was honored this season as the Patriots' Ron Burton Community Service Award recipient.
11:23Henry was honored for his work with the foster care community,
11:26the essential cause to the Patriots' foundation.
11:29He is the 23rd Patriots player to receive the award.
11:33Made for the Patriots' first ever draft pick, Ron Burton.
11:37Excellent moment for Hunter and his family.
11:40Something that is very near and dear to the heart of this Patriots organization.
11:44First in 10, Las Vegas.
11:45All three timeouts as they begin from their 36-smits pass.
11:50And Gronk Bauer is unable to squeeze it as he falls incomplete.
11:58Well, Spiro, the Patriots are playing a lot of heavy man coverage in this game.
12:04And now it's up to the Raiders.
12:06They've got to be able to beat and separate.
12:09And to me, the difference between that first drive when they went down the field and the rest of the game
12:14is the Patriots' defense have been winning first down.
12:18The Raiders have not had good first down production in putting them in second and third long situations.
12:24And Smith is buried again.
12:27Third set for the Patriots.
12:29So you get the quickened completion.
12:32Stops the clock.
12:33And now New England hoping to get it back.
12:36With still 142 left.
12:39And they're also starting to mix in pressure.
12:43Second long.
12:44Again, man-to-man coverage behind it.
12:46They run a twist up inside.
12:48The Raiders' offensive line can't pick it up.
12:51And, again, just a really good sequence.
12:54It's not a great first drive to start out this game.
12:59But Vrabel and Terrell Williams' defense has really started to settle in
13:04and frustrate Geno Smith and the Raiders.
13:07Harold Landry already putting his imprint on this defense.
13:11Caleb on Chaser and trying to resurrect his career.
13:16Last year with the Raiders.
13:18Third and 20.
13:19Smith quick delivery.
13:23Gets it to Myers.
13:25And he is going nowhere.
13:26And, boy, a potential late hit.
13:28My goodness.
13:32It was Terrell Williams, the 51-year-old first-time NFL defensive coordinator.
13:38What a potentially massive call this is.
13:40I know you, bitch!
13:49Was there a little bit extra there?
13:52The shove from Carlton Davis.
13:56Personal foul, unnecessary roughness.
13:58Offense, number 58.
13:59Yeah.
14:00Jackson Powers-Johnson.
14:03Down counts.
14:04It's fourth foul.
14:06Watch number 58 come in here at the end.
14:09And when Myers is out of bounds, he just blindsides him on the sideline.
14:14And now, listen, the Raiders got this football with two minutes left.
14:19They only ran, what, 24 seconds off the clock.
14:22Now, with this penalty, Patriots in great field position.
14:27Drake made.
14:28They get another chance right before halftime.
14:31A good opportunity to get more points.
14:33Powers-Johnson, the young man who they had slated to be their starter at center.
14:38The starter at right guard.
14:40It's a huge call, but it goes the other way.
14:43And now the Patriots in business.
14:45Good-looking punt from Cole.
14:48It's as much of that as he could.
14:50Marcus Jones makes the first guy miss.
14:52There is another flag thrown right behind the play at the 34-yard line.
14:58Aditi, by the way, telling us that the rain has picked up a little bit here
15:01at the last couple of minutes, saw the drop from Bowers.
15:06And as the weather continues to be a factor, here's Torben.
15:09During the return, illegal block in the back.
15:13Number 51 of the return team.
15:15Ten-yard penalty.
15:16New England kicks the ball first and ten.
15:20Another reminder to keep it here.
15:22The Verizon Halftime Report comes your way next.
15:25All the scores, all the highlights to your heart's content
15:28on this first Sunday of the NFL season.
15:32So Josh McDaniels, what does he want to do?
15:36How deep does he get in that play sheet here, Arch?
15:38First down, they'll start the drive just outside their 25
15:40with one timeout left.
15:49Well, you can feel the excitement from Josh
15:52and our conversation with him on Friday to work with this young quarterback.
15:56All the success that McDaniels has had here over the years
15:58as he faces his former team.
16:03May is going to run for it.
16:05Remember, he averaged more than 32 rush yards per game last season.
16:10Tackled that time by Tyree Wilson to pick up a four.
16:12And most of those rushing yards came on scrambles.
16:16A lot of times against man coverage.
16:18That time, they designed run just trying to catch the Raiders off guard,
16:23pick up some yardage as they try to at least get three points out of this drive.
16:28Clock running inside of a minute.
16:30A couple of hard fakes.
16:31Stevenson out of the backfield, taking on tacklers.
16:35What a collision between him and Chin.
16:39So, pick up a five.
16:42One thing to keep in mind, New England, one timeout,
16:44they do get the football to begin the second half
16:46as we're down to 53 seconds.
16:53March, what are you thinking about here if you're McDaniels on third and one?
16:56Well, they've got to pick up the first down.
16:57And then I would expect some sort of a
17:00shot down the middle of the field with your one timeout
17:04to try to get some chunk yardage.
17:06Stevenson, I don't think he got it.
17:08Wrapped up in the backfield.
17:10What a play by Devin White.
17:16And now the Raiders are going to take a timeout
17:18with 47 seconds left.
17:22So, Pete Carroll trying to get the football back to his offense.
17:25We thought New England was set up nicely for Drake May,
17:33but the drive stalls out.
17:35March, what have you seen so far from the second-year quarterback?
17:37Well, outside of that first drive,
17:38I think he's really settled in nicely.
17:40He's going to the guys that he trusts in this offense.
17:44It's the tight ends that really got it started.
17:46And then Douglas, the slot receiver,
17:50taking advantage of a blitz look by the Raiders
17:54for their first and only touchdown of the game.
17:57So, Behringer on to punt.
17:59Second three and out for the Patriots.
18:03And the Raiders hoping to get it back here
18:04with decent clock and two timeouts left.
18:11A little bit of a short punt.
18:12Behringer downs it inside the 30.
18:15See how Pete Carroll handles this.
18:21He's got two timeouts, 39 seconds.
18:25And New England set to take the football
18:27to begin the second half.
18:28How do you handle this here for Pete Carroll?
18:31I would imagine that they're going to give the ball to Gentry.
18:34Maybe something happens.
18:37You hit a home run.
18:39You get a chunk play.
18:40Outside of that,
18:40I don't see them taking many chances down the field.
18:43But they do have two timeouts.
18:46Geno from the gun.
18:48Let me see what they can do here in first down.
18:52Motion from Bowers.
18:54Four-man rush to New England.
18:55Smith quick delivery.
18:57Bowers far side.
18:59Clock will stay running.
19:00And now it looks like Pete Carroll is going to take his second timeout.
19:06So not quite playing it as conservatively as maybe some would have thought.
19:11Second and five down to 30 seconds.
19:14But to get a chunk play, obviously you've got to throw the ball downfield.
19:18Who are those guys in your offense?
19:20You know, Bowers probably is the biggest threat down the field.
19:24Of course, you've got Thornton, but he's a rookie.
19:26So he's still trying to feel his way.
19:28I don't know if he's...
19:29I wouldn't quite say he's the go-to wide receiver in this situation.
19:32Myers, more of a possession-type receiver.
19:35Again, maybe look for a screen.
19:37Getting Gentry the ball out of the backfield
19:39to try to make something happen and put you in position to try and kick a field goal.
19:43Daniel Carlson, by the way, in pregame warm-ups hit one from 59.
19:47But again, it's a wet field.
19:52You know, certainly not ideal kicking conditions here in Foxborough.
19:54Second and five.
19:56Smith protected over the middle.
19:59This will be a first down.
20:00Bowers on the catch.
20:02Tackled immediately.
20:06We've got the chains crew moving.
20:0826 seconds.
20:10And a first down connection.
20:11As Pete Carroll's going to take his final timeout.
20:16Why don't you give us your first-half thoughts, Geno,
20:18on this new-look Raiders offense.
20:21Well, I thought they had the advantage.
20:23To me, they looked like they were playing faster
20:25and executing at a higher level in their first drive of the game.
20:29Since then, I just think the Patriots defense has made it tough on them.
20:33They've settled into a nice mix of man-to-man coverage
20:36and pressuring Geno Smith.
20:38And really, they have not given him a lot of open windows
20:41or time to deliver the ball downfield.
20:44So, I really think the way this defense has adjusted
20:47has been really positive for the Patriots.
20:50Again, no question.
20:51Gonzalez for the Patriots.
20:53Smith all day to throw.
20:54Geno steps up in the pocket.
20:57Everyone covered.
20:57So, Geno's going to run for it.
21:00He'll get out of bounds.
21:00That'll stop the clock right at the first down marker.
21:03Excellent coverage down the field by the Patriots.
21:06And now, Geno Smith.
21:09So, maybe there was a little limp there to his gate,
21:12but looks like he's okay as he gets the play call from Chip Kelly.
21:1416 seconds.
21:18Really, it depends on how far you throw the football.
21:20It's right on the edge on whether you can complete this pass inbounds
21:24and still have enough time to spike the football.
21:28Mike Vrabel's going to take his final timeout here.
21:31Try to get his troops' position
21:34as we are down to 16 seconds left in this first half.
21:39So, this New England defense arched all the issues that they had last year.
21:43So many changes, roster turnover, slow start,
21:46but then the Hawkins pick really turned the tide.
21:49Well, this secondary, to me, has been playing really well
21:51and making it tough.
21:53And then the pressure up front with the new additions,
21:57Harold Landry, Kayle Vaughn Chason,
21:59doing a nice job of mixing in pressure from the second level with Spillane.
22:05To me, the front seven, I mean, really,
22:07you've got to give credit to the entire defense.
22:09But I like the way the front seven has really operated on first down
22:14and forcing them into obvious passing situations.
22:18And then that's when that front has started to get active.
22:21Remember that shock decision to release your broke peppers
22:24at the end of camp.
22:26The roster turnover on that side of the football.
22:28Gino, the hard fake fires complete.
22:31At the 41-yard line, they're out of timeouts.
22:34They've got to get to the line of scrimmage quickly
22:35and spike it to give Carlson a chance.
22:39And, boy, well done.
22:40Smith scurries them to the line of scrimmage
22:43to get Carlson a shot.
22:46Well done by Gino Smith.
22:48And that was tough because the Raiders' wideouts
22:51were far down the field.
22:53And so it took them a little bit of time.
22:56They had to hustle and sprint back to the line of scrimmage
22:59to be able to get set in time to be able to snap
23:02or to hike and clock the football.
23:05Career-long for Carlson.
23:07A 57-yarder.
23:08It came in a 22-23 season.
23:14In pregame warm-ups, he hit from 59 in the rain.
23:18This will be from 58.
23:20Carlson for the tie.
23:26Misses wide left.
23:30Didn't quite look like he got that off cleanly.
23:33And New England's going to take a three-point lead
23:35into the halftime locker room.
23:41Adini standing by with Mike Rabel.
23:43Mike, what did you say to your team after that first drive
23:46that so settled in the defense?
23:47Well, we just got to slow down.
23:48There's going to be a lot of shifts and motions early on.
23:50And that's stuff that, you know, quite frankly,
23:52you can't show them everything.
23:54And they did a great job settling down.
23:55We've had some penalties that hurt us.
23:57You know, we've got to convert short-yarded situations
23:59offensively.
24:00All right.
24:00We appreciate it.
24:03All right, Adini, our halftime score here
24:05in Foxborough, 10-7 Patriots.
24:09Halftime is next after these first-half highlights
24:11from Verizon and a word from your local station.
24:17We welcome you back to NFL Kickoff presented by YouTube TV
24:20as we sit in for the second half here at Gillette Stadium.
24:23Foxborough, Massachusetts, 10 straight points for the Patriots
24:27as they will have the football.
24:28They'll take a three-point lead into the third quarter.
24:31Spiro and Arch will hear from Adini in just a little bit.
24:33First-half observations, a little bit of a slow start,
24:35but Mike Rabel's team settled in after the takeaway.
24:38Well, it's a little bit to be expected in the first week.
24:41The first drive, everybody's trying to feel themselves out.
24:44Boy, it looked like the Raiders, they were ready to rock and roll.
24:47Geno Smith looked sharp right down the field for a touchdown,
24:50but then the defense for the Patriots really started to settle in.
24:54Good job of mixing in pressure and tight man-to-man coverage
24:58has left the Raiders frustrated.
25:00Saw some game-changing penalties, that 22-yarder on a fourth and short
25:03to get New England drive continuing.
25:09You know, these two teams have in store for us here over the final two quarters.
25:13Fans trickling back into their seats as Carlson boots it away.
25:16Short kick, going to force New England to play it here
25:19with their rookie Henderson, crosses the 25,
25:23and is going to get close to the 32 penalty markers thrown behind the play.
25:28During the return, holding by the receiving team,
25:41number 91, 10-yard penalty, first down in New England.
25:45All right, so that is going to negate some of that return from Henderson
25:47a couple of seconds ago.
25:48Aditi with Pete Carroll.
25:52Coach Carroll, what did you tell your team inside the locker room?
25:54Well, we've got to kind of get out of our own way.
25:56Give them a couple of really big, field-changing penalties on PIs.
25:59We've got to do a better job of it.
26:01And we've got to get rid of the football a couple of times on pressure.
26:03Once their defense settled in, what do you now need to see from your offense?
26:06Well, everybody's just got to do a little bit more right.
26:09We've got to do right more of the time.
26:10So that's what we're going to try to do to make a big finish.
26:12We appreciate it. Thank you.
26:14All right, Aditi, great stuff.
26:15Henderson out of the backfield on the catch.
26:18March, what did you see from this New England offense in that first half?
26:21All the talk about the young youth, all the moving new pieces on that offensive line.
26:27Well, I saw a team that started to settle in.
26:30I thought, you know, the first drive of the game, Drake May,
26:32maybe a little bit anxious here to start the season.
26:35But then he started to get the ball to some familiar faces, Hunter Henry and Douglas.
26:40And really thought they did a nice job of getting the ball downfield a little bit
26:45with good chemistry to Booty and the rest of those guys.
26:49So I think it was a really good, strong first half.
26:52And Drake May really started to settle in.
26:55Good looking delivery that time.
26:56Booty, who's been his favorite target so far.
27:00Fifth target, fifth catch for Booty.
27:02Picks up ten.
27:05All the struggles with this New England offense.
27:07The one game, pass protection last year.
27:11They went out and got this young man.
27:13Stud, consensus All-American at LSU.
27:16As they took him with the fourth overall pick.
27:18And so far, so good.
27:19They really have done a pretty good job for most of this game.
27:22Not letting the Raiders front four really have an impact.
27:27Much, much better than they were a season ago.
27:30Crosby trying to come around the other side.
27:32Stevenson.
27:33And we wondered if maybe they would move Crosby a little bit
27:37to try to take advantage of some of that youth
27:40with Wilson and Campbell Arch on the left side.
27:42But we haven't seen that.
27:43Then you mix in Moses and Bradbury.
27:45And some of the vets.
27:47Yeah, you bring over Morgan Moses, who's been in this league a long time.
27:51And really, when you look at him last year as a right tackle,
27:54was probably a top ten tackle as far as pressures allowed on that right side.
28:00Started 14 games of right tackle for the Jets last season.
28:03His digs makes his second catch.
28:05And as you know, Spiro, Patriots fan,
28:08they know about the troubles they had at tackle last season on both sides.
28:11That's indeed the worst-rated offensive line in the sport.
28:15And Moses against Crosby got just enough of the Pro Bowl star defensive end.
28:25May goes through his progression.
28:26He's going to slide down close to the 50.
28:28Drake May told us he was watching Jalen Hurts with all those slides on his runs,
28:37the mobility, trying to protect himself.
28:40Everything this young man brings to the table as the second-year quarterback.
28:43And you really haven't seen him sit there and pat the ball.
28:46If he doesn't make a fast decision and get the ball out,
28:49he's either scrambling or getting rid of it.
28:52Oh, ailing pass, and it's picked!
28:57Isaac Polamau was right there for Las Vegas.
29:02And the Raiders with a takeaway.
29:04The Spiro right on cue.
29:14Max Crosby inside pressure.
29:17May throws it up.
29:18Interception for the Raiders.
29:24First takeaway for this Las Vegas defense.
29:28As Polamau with the pick, they get the pressure with Crosby.
29:31And now Geno Smith and company trying to capitalize.
29:36They'll start inside their 30 as they play the three-point hole early stages second half.
29:45Play action from Smith.
29:47Guns it and completes Myers.
29:51The one-time Patriot tiptoes and weaves his way on the New England side of the field.
29:56Archers to take us back to the pick.
29:58A really nice game inside.
30:00Booker's going to come up to set it up and Crosby is going to wrap inside.
30:05So you see the pressure.
30:07And Drake May really can't step into it.
30:09And on the back end, it's Polamau who's just sitting there in two deep coverage,
30:13reading the quarterback, makes a play on the football.
30:17That's really well done.
30:18That's the takeaway that Pete Carroll and his defense needed to start off this second half.
30:23Fake to JT.
30:26Smith throwing a dart.
30:29And Myers taking on all covers.
30:31There's a penalty flag thrown right towards the middle of that New England defense.
30:36It's a pickup of 20 if the play sticks.
30:39And it looks like this one's going to be against New England.
30:48Personal foul, unnecessary roughness.
31:01Defense number 21.
31:03Penalties half the distance from the end of the play.
31:06Automatic first foul.
31:07Boy, Arch, a lot of people wondered about Myers.
31:10Where would his psyche, where would his head be at with the trade request?
31:14Boy, has he shown up for the Raiders.
31:16Yeah, well, listen.
31:17He had a career year last year in catches 87 in receptions yards.
31:22His first season over 1,000.
31:24Mentioned how he didn't drop a pass all last season.
31:27And he did.
31:28I know it's a different offense.
31:29But he did a lot of his best work last season on first down.
31:33And it looks like the adjustment coming out of halftime.
31:36More first down passing to get better production.
31:40And staying out of those long yardage situations.
31:42Geno again faking to JT.
31:44Goes to the rookie out of the backfield.
31:46Slips past the initial tackler.
31:49As Ashton JT makes his NFL debut.
31:53Sixth round pick in the draft.
31:57This Raiders offense.
31:58They got that early touchdown drive to begin the game.
32:01Not much since.
32:03But right now in business with Chip Kelly at the controls.
32:06And the biggest difference, again.
32:07You've seen first down passing.
32:09They've gotten some chunk plays.
32:11And that is, you know, the Patriots were doing a really nice job defensively.
32:15Of mixing in a lot of first down run pressures.
32:19But the Raiders have countered that here in this drive.
32:23Smith again delivers a strike.
32:25That's Michael Mayer, the tight end.
32:28An embarrassment of riches for Geno at that tight end position.
32:31He's got, of course, Bowers and Mayer.
32:34A pickup of seven.
32:36First and goal.
32:37Raiders.
32:38It's the second time in this drive that they've gone heavy play action to the Raiders' offensive left and through back.
32:45The first time was a little glance route.
32:47A little short slant to Jacoby Myers.
32:50That time, same play action.
32:52But they hit his tight end.
32:56Mayer over the middle for another nice game.
32:59Can this New England defense hold?
33:04Bowers in motion.
33:05First and goal.
33:07Gentino.
33:08So much power.
33:09He's going to bang it in.
33:12Touchdown, Las Vegas.
33:14And the Raiders back in front.
33:16I tell you what, Jordan Merritt at the center.
33:24He really does some nice work inside.
33:28Watch number 61.
33:31Tough to see him on that angle.
33:32How he just gets his combination block.
33:34Other, if he doesn't get that block, Robert Spillane, he makes that play in the backfield.
33:40But that's the key block.
33:41And then Gentino, he just does the rest.
33:43Doesn't go down after initial contact.
33:46And just like they started off their first drive of the game, another beautifully well-executed drive here to start out the second half for the Raiders.
33:55Gentino, who was a force of nature for Boise State last year.
33:59Over 2,600 rushing yards.
34:02Second most prolific season in the history of college football.
34:07And he looks like a star in the making.
34:10Chip Kelly legs it.
34:11Raiders in front.
34:16The NFL on CBS is sponsored by Progressive.
34:21Coverage you can count on.
34:23Progressive.com.
34:26AT&T.
34:27Connecting changes everything.
34:30And by FanDuel.
34:33Play your game.
34:41A good turn of events here for the Raiders.
34:45Ashton Gentey, hard physical runner, putting his talents on display already.
34:51And the Raiders have retaken the lead here.
34:53As we play with nine and change left quarter number three.
34:57Gillette Stadium, Foxboro, Massachusetts.
35:01And had rain and lightning showers here overnight.
35:04Rain has subsided for the most part down to a late drizzle.
35:09See how that impacts this game over the final quarter plus.
35:11Carlson.
35:12Looks like he's lost his footing there a little bit.
35:16And that's going to draw the flags.
35:21Kickoff rules that were implemented last year.
35:24And that is going to be costly for the Raiders.
35:26Kickoff did not make it to the landing zone by the kicking team, number eight.
35:32Ball will be placed at the 40-yard line.
35:35First and ten.
35:36Just talking about the rain, because these new fields are, it's drained the water a lot better than the old fields used to that you played on in your archaic playing days.
35:50But Carlson has been a tremendous kicker.
35:55And that thing is costly now.
35:56They mark the football at the 40-yard line.
35:59And so terrific starting field position for Drake May in this Patriots offense.
36:03May, if you've just joined this 18 of 25 for a buck 83, a touchdown and a pick as he begins his second season in the NFL.
36:16A little bit high with that pass, and it falls incomplete.
36:21Unable to connect with Hunter Henry.
36:23And he has, you know, just a miss.
36:27Hunter Henry wide open against zone coverage for the Raiders.
36:32There's opportunity to get something positive happening after throwing the interception on the previous drive.
36:38It's interesting to listen to Josh McDaniels talk about May.
36:43Just how smart he is, his ability to process things so quickly.
36:48A rare trait for a player as young as he is.
36:51Second and ten.
36:52May again from the gun.
36:54Gets it to Henderson.
36:55And he's blown up.
36:57Boy, Paul Lameau starting to take it over for the Raiders.
37:00Well, earlier in the game, it was Jalen Hawkins, the safety for the Patriots, who really had a nice sequence and had his interception.
37:09This time, Paul Lameau just had a big interception that led to a touchdown in the drive before.
37:14And tell you what, that is textbook open field tackling.
37:19Put your face mask right on the thigh pad and chop him to the ground.
37:24Returning starter on the back end of this Vegas defense with the newcomer, Jeremy Chin.
37:30Third and 11 New England.
37:33May protected.
37:35That pass batting down.
37:38And Pete Carroll's defense starting to flex here at Foxboro.
37:43Caillou, Blue Kelly, terrific coverage against Booty.
37:47Well, the Patriots, their defense, they went to more of a tight man-to-man coverage.
37:51I know that looks like man, but the Raiders playing a lot more zone coverage and playing it soft.
37:56And we talked about the young cornerback.
37:59A lot of question marks centered around this position.
38:02But again, when you look at Pete Carroll and the way he's done his defenses, he's always been able to develop late-round guys, blue-collar guys, guys that have chips on their shoulder, especially at the cornerback position.
38:17Caillou, Blue Kelly, young man who actually played half of his rookie season for Pete Carroll in Seattle.
38:22As this one is going to be marked down inside the 20.
38:27Good coverage down the field by New England's punt team.
38:30But right now, it's this Raiders defense under this spotlight.
38:36Raiders by four, third quarter.
38:44There's your score.
38:45Four-point Raiders lead.
38:46Middle stages, third quarter.
38:48Here, Patriots have the football to begin the half, unable to take advantage as this chess match continues between Carroll and Vrabel.
38:59Chapter one for these two coaches and their new franchises.
39:04Smith coupled the hard fakes, puts a mare under it, near side, locates Bowers.
39:10Bowers had that drop just a little while ago, but back in business.
39:14First down Raiders.
39:15First down Raiders, it's a pickup of 30.
39:20Well, you can see just a lapse in coverage.
39:24You see Marcus Jones, not sure, based on his body language, if he was responsible for Brock Bowers leaking into the flat and then back up the field.
39:35But again, really good time in the pocket for Geno Smith to get the ball in explosive fashion to his tight end.
39:44And Bowers picking up right where he left off and what was a historic rookie season.
39:48Aston Chanty unable to get to the line of scrimmage.
39:52Hawkins first contact.
39:54NFL Today update back to New York and Adam Schein.
39:57Well, Spiro, we've got a Baker Mayfield touchdown for you.
40:01To Bucky Irving.
40:03Ten yards.
40:04He's a good one in Atlanta.
40:05The Bucs leading.
40:0617-10.
40:07Back to you.
40:10Starting to dig Adam Schein there.
40:12Quarterback in our updates.
40:13Yeah.
40:13We'll be listening to him do his thing all season from our studios in New York.
40:1814-10 Raiders.
40:19Second and 11.
40:22As we approach seven minutes left in the corner.
40:25Smith.
40:27Harold Landry has been a monster.
40:37Let's check in with Adini.
40:39Spiro, I talked to Harold Landry this week and he said when it looked like he was going
40:46to leave Tennessee, it was a no-brainer to rejoin Mike Vrabel.
40:50He said when he saw Vrabel putting together this staff, he said that would be the right
40:54fit for me.
40:55He said he's never been as well prepared as Mike Vrabel prepared him.
40:59And he's also, guys, been the inside man for Vrabel, getting the message across.
41:04Seven years with Tennessee, six with Vrabel.
41:06Smith slinging one and it's incomplete.
41:11Borgino rolling the dice to the rookie Thornton.
41:14Tight coverage.
41:15Carlton Davis was there.
41:18March, take us back to the sack.
41:19Well, you see they're going to set it up inside.
41:22And then Harold Landry is going to loop around.
41:25Really beautifully done.
41:27Setting up that right side of the Raiders offensive line.
41:30And when you look at Landry, you know, one of five players with nine sacks and four passes
41:36defense last season.
41:38Really, when you talk about that 2018 draft class, 50 and a half career sacks, that's the
41:44most of any rusher that came out of that class.
41:46And he's got two and a half already in his Patriots debut.
41:50There is a flag thrown as the punt here from A.J. Cole into the end zone.
41:57Officially a 60-yard punt.
41:59We'll check the marker here from Torbert.
42:01By the way, that was the fourth sack for New England as a team.
42:06I don't know if they had that in eight games last year.
42:10It's a good point as a Torbert.
42:15Illegal formation by the kicking team.
42:18The right tackle is not lined up in the line of spinach.
42:21Five-yard penalty will be added to the touchback spot.
42:24New England's ball, first and ten.
42:26Timeout on the field.
42:28Patriots had 28 sacks all of last season.
42:31Dead last in the league.
42:32What a difference a year makes.
42:34Four-point Raiders lead on CBS.
42:36The NFL on CBS is sponsored by Lowe's.
42:44Lowe's knows Sunday hits different when you've earned it.
42:48And by Taco Bell.
42:58What a scene it was.
42:59Early August, the Patriots honoring Tom Brady.
43:02Unveiling the statue.
43:04Six Super Bowls.
43:05This is his 20-year run.
43:07Legendary here in Foxborough.
43:09And ironically, now the minority owner of the Raiders.
43:14No doubt keeping tabs on this game as we check in with Aditi.
43:17Spiro, you mentioned earlier that Pete Carroll's second head coaching job was here in New England.
43:22He opened up to us yesterday, and he said that it was after Bob Kraft fired him
43:27that he suddenly had a coaching epiphany.
43:30He was reading John Wooden's book.
43:32He saw that it took Wooden 14 years to win his first title, and he said,
43:3714 years?
43:38I won't get 14 months.
43:40I need to get my stuff together.
43:44May, a couple of fakes.
43:45Going to get it to the rookie.
43:46This is Henderson.
43:47And what he realized, Spiro, is that he didn't have a philosophy.
43:54He said it was his old mentor, Monty Kiffin, who said,
43:57if you change it week to week, then you just don't have that.
44:00And so he said, you know what?
44:02I am someone who is insanely competitive.
44:05It is who I am.
44:06The relentless pursuit of finding a competitive edge is what drives him,
44:10and that's what now is what he makes sure is the central tenet
44:14of every single one of his teams.
44:17Indeed, it was fascinating to listen to him talk about it, tell us that story.
44:20Guy has been doing it for 50 years.
44:22Arch mentioned the incredible influence he's had on his coaches and players
44:26over the years.
44:27And his defense is starting to pick it up.
44:31Tyree Wilson.
44:33Boy, what a huge play that is for Wilson.
44:35They've been waiting for this kid to step into that potential.
44:38And a huge play for the silver and black defense.
44:41Yeah, and this is just a bull rush on the rookie, Will Campbell.
44:46He's just going to bull Campbell right back into Drake May.
44:49And as May tries to escape up inside the pocket,
44:52he's just going to come off and make that sack.
44:56You know, this Raider football team, outside of Max Crosby last year,
44:59just couldn't get to the quarterback.
45:02But they hope the combination of him, Koontz, and...
45:06Penalty flags.
45:11Multiple on the play.
45:13"'I love you.
45:19"'I love you."
45:22"'I love you.
45:37"'I love you.'"
