00:00The uncontested re-election of PASA's top five leaders, including party president Abdul Hadi Awang,
00:08shows that the Islamic party is content to consolidate its Malay support base rather than reach beyond it, say analysts.
00:16Asmi Hassan of Academy Nusantara said the fact that the top two posts and the three vice-presidencies went uncontested
00:22reflected a conscious choice to preserve stability.
00:25He said Kadamantri Basar Sanusi Noor's decision not to go for one of the vice president's posts,
00:33despite receiving sufficient nominations, was surprising, but likely due to the PAS Ulama Council's edict not to rock the boat.
00:41He also said keeping Hadi at the helm would hamper the Islamic party's chances of expanding beyond its traditional support base.
00:49Mazan Ali of University Technology Malaysia said the absence of contests for PASA's top posts
00:55reflected the party's Islamic ethos on leadership, explaining that under Islamic principles,
01:01those who seek or fight for positions are considered to have violated the teachings of Islam.
01:07He said without any renewal in leadership, PASA would remain in the old mold.
01:12He said while this may allow the party to retain control of the four northern and east coast states,
01:17taking over the federal government will be difficult.
01:21Natasha Bust, FMT.
