00:00Ladies and gentlemen, appearing this way in person breaks one of my long-standing traditions.
00:25But then you probably know by now just how much respect I have for traditions and laws.
00:30Most of my screen career has been concerned with portraying lawbreakers.
00:36At least ever since by a quaint twist of fate I was cast as Little Caesar.
00:41Well it was all a lot of fun and very pleasant up to a certain point.
00:46After a while I became so imbued with the ruthlessness of these characters
00:51that I got to believing that I myself was really tough.
00:55Yes and then again my sleep wasn't any too restful.
00:58Why one night I got up and found myself strangling my wife.
01:01A lovely girl.
01:03And I was shouting at her, look here, this bed ain't big enough for both of us.
01:06One of us has got to go and it ain't gonna be me.
01:09Yeah.
01:11Well what was all the fighting for in the old gangster pictures? Territory.
01:15But seriously, Hollywood when it makes pictures is primarily concerned with entertainment.
01:23But I do believe that every now and then they can perform a great public service.
01:27And I'm sure that you will agree that the so called gangster pictures of a few years ago
01:33did a great deal towards the awakening of the American consciousness
01:37to the pernicious practices that were lurking in our midst.
01:41Now this picture that I've just finished, a picture that I believe that all of you will want to see.
01:47The last gangster strikes an entirely new angle.
01:53It is the smashing climax to all gangster pictures.
01:58It reveals the end of mobs and mobsters.
02:02It exposes vividly just what happens to our so called public enemies
02:08when Uncle Sam gets hold of them and puts them where they really belong.
02:13Behind prison bars made of triple steel.
02:17I want to tell you.
02:18You're telling me nothing.
02:19I ain't going to any federal pen.
02:21There isn't one big enough to hold your clothes, eh?
02:24Now look here little man, I've had enough of this.
02:30You get my lawyer Gorman on the phone.
02:33This is Joe Kroczak.
02:34You ain't talking any junked up sucker that knocked over a corner of a cigar store.
02:37Now let's get that straight.
02:39I'm talking to number 84-29.
02:42What?
02:43Number 84-29.
02:45But you are the man I loved, Joe.
02:47And you loved me too.
02:49And you married me.
02:50Ah, get away!
02:52I married you because you're my kind for a kid, see?
02:55A family.
02:56Joe Kroczak, Junior.
02:57That's my kid, you hear me?
02:59I got plans for that kid.
03:01You try and snatch him and I'll have you dropped out of size.
03:04You bring him here at press fantasy every month or I'll know the reason why.
