00:01Micro-algae grown on dairy effluents can cut the use of mineral fertilizers by 25%
00:07and could help reduce Europe's dependence on Russian imports.
00:10In Saint-Laurent-de-le-Pret, Western France, this bio-fertilizer was tested on several wheat plots
00:16and compared with mineral fertilizers and other organic products.
00:20The result is that with the algal powder, we have some ratings that are like the dried leaves.
00:25It's good, it's better if we don't put it, but it's not as good as mineral fertilizers if we put it.
00:31Where we had some interesting ratings, it was when we mixed mineral with algal powder.
00:36Because we had the same ratings that if we only put mineral,
00:39but it allowed us to eliminate a half of mineral fertilizers.
00:45This product has been developed within Walnut, a European project aimed at cutting pollution
00:50and closing the loop between food and waste by recovering vital nutrients
00:54for agriculture from urban, industrial and other types of waste water.
00:58We have an agroalimentary factory where the effluents will be placed in cylinders.
01:08And in these cylinders, we will plant algae unicellulaires
01:10which will nourish the organic material of the effluents.
01:13The organic material will be converted into a vegetable mass.
01:17This vegetable mass will take, dehydrate and then expand into the fields.
01:22And since this biomass is rich in azote, it will have a role of fertilizer.
01:25Unlike mineral fertilizers, which release nitrogen instantly and are easy to dose,
01:31algae powder works more slowly and requires planning from farmers.
01:35More research is still needed to optimize it, yet it could help Europe reduce reliance on imports,
01:41cut environmental impacts and build resilience into its food systems.
